• Best language or tool for automating tedious manual tasks

  We all have tasks that come up from time to time that we think we'd be better off scripting or automating than doing manually. Obviously some tools or languages are better for this than others - no-one (in their right mind) is doing a one off job of cross referencing a bunch of text lists their PM has just given them in assembler for instance. What one tool or language would you recommend for the sort of general quick and dirty jobs you get asked to do where time (rather than elegance) is of the essence? Background: I'm a former programmer, now development manager PM, looking to learn a new language for fun. If I'm going to learn something for fun I'd like it to be useful and this sort of use case is the most likely to come up.

• Temporary R+W CIFS share for non-root accounts?

  I want to set up a cross platform mail client (Thunderbird), and so far I want to use NAS as a profile store. The NAS is CIFS based, and can be mounted on both Windows and Ubuntu. Also the locking works fine for mutex, and setup seems to work as a proof of concept. The problem is the Linux mount. Since I'm using a laptop, I'm not always connected to network, hence, I can't use the /etc/fstab to set up CIFS share with a modified group id. And the share has to be mounted using mount -t cifs ..., which causes it to be owned by root, and owned so badly, that it can't be chowned to the regular user account. This causes read only issues for Thunderbird, which seem to be solved if Thunderbird is launched via sudo. But I would like to avoid that and use a script to mount the share on-demand to a profile location, with profile based privileges and access rights. Is there a way to achieve that?

I am not looking for a cross fade effect but more to a camera moving and rotating the view in order to reach the next camera point of view and so on. • Web technologies on GUI apps

  I developed many GUI applications for the Windows platform during my early professional career, and saw several GUI frameworks come, have whole magazines devoted to them, and then fade away. MFC is iconic. Tasked with writing yet another GUI application, I starter researching cross-platform frameworks like Qt and WxWindows. I found the same steep learning curves I knew from before, and tooling doesn't help much in building a functional and elegant user interface because its clumsy and complicated. But people are building beautiful and functional UIs on the Web all the time (look at this site!). The standards, the libraries, and the tools are certainly there. My thought and my question: Why not write a GUI in which most of the UI is handled by an embedded browser? I already know that the Qt widgets support a large part of CSS and JavaScript, and programmers with good knowledge about web development are relatively easy to find, ..., so... Have you done something like that before? What's your experience/advise?

• Deterministic Multiplayer RTS game questions?

  I am working on a cross-platform multiplayer RTS game where the different clients and a server(flash and C#), all need to stay deterministically synchronised. To deal with Floatpoint inconsistencies, I've come across this method: http://joshblog.net/2007/01/30/flash-floating-point-number-errors/#comment-49912 which basically truncates off the nondeterministic part: return Math.round(1000 * float) / 1000; Howewer my concern is that every time there is a division, there is further chance of creating additional floatpoint errors, in essence making it worse? . So it occured to me, how about something like this: function floatSafe(number:Number) : Number {return Math.round(float* 1024) / 1024; } ie dividing with only powers of 2 ? What do you think? . Ironically with the above method I got less accurate results: trace( floatSafe(3/5) ) // 0.599609375 where as with the other method(dividing with 1000), or just tracing the raw value I am getting 3/5 = 0.6 or Maybe thats what 3/5 actually is, IE 0.6 cannot really be represented with a floatpoint datatype, and would be more consistent across different platforms?

• Is there a modern (eg NoSQL) web analytics solution based on log files?

  I have been using Awstats for many years to process my log files. But I am missing many possibilities (like cross-domain reports) and I hate being stuck with extra fields I created years ago. Anyway, I am not going to continue to use this script. Is there a modern apache logs analytics solution based on modern storage technologies like NoSQL or at least somehow ready to cope with large datasets efficiently? I am primarily looking for something that generates nice sortable and searchable outputs with the focus on web analytics, before having to write my own frontends. (so graylog2 is not an option) This question is purely about log file based solutions.

• GNOME 3.4 released, with smooth & fast magnification

This release contains several new accessibility features, along with a new set of custom high-contrast icons which improve the user experience for users needing improved contrast. This release also makes available the AEGIS-funded GNOME Shell Magnifier. This magnifier leverages the powerful graphics functionality built into all modern video cards for smooth and fast magnification in GNOME. You can watch a video of that magnifier (with the previous version of the preference dialog), which shows all of the features now available in GNOME 3.4. This includes full/partial screen magnification, a magnifier lens, full or partial mouse cross hairs with translucency, and several mouse tracking modes.   If you used mstest and NUnit you might be aware of the fact that the former doesn't support dynamic, data driven test cases. For example, the following scenario cannot be achieved with the out-of-box mstest: given a dataset, create distinct test cases for each entry in it, using a predefined generic test case. The best result that can be achieved using mstest is a single testcase that will iterate through the dataset. There is one disadvantage: if the test fails for one entry in the dataset, the whole test case fails. So, in order to overcome the previously mentioned limitation, I decided to create a text template that will generate the test cases for me. • Multiple Vertex Buffers per Mesh

  I've run into the situation where the size of my mesh with all its vertices and indices, is larger than the (optimal) vertex buffer object upper limit (~8MB). I was wondering if I can sub-divide the mesh across multiple vertex buffers, and somehow retain validity of the indices. Ie a triangle with a indice at the first vertex, and an indice at the last (ie in seperate VBOs). All the while maintaining this within Vertex Array Objects. My thoughts are, save myself the hassle, and for meshes (messes :P) such as this, just use the necessary size ( 8MB); which is what I do at the moment. But ideally my buffer manager (wip) at the moment is using optimal sizes; I may just have to make a special case then... Any ideas? If necessary, a simple C++ code example is appreciated. Note: I have also cross-posted this on stackoverflow, as I was not sure as to which it would be more suitable (its partly a design question).

• Can mass different log-in pages result in SEO duplicate and/or low quality punishments?

  I have internal pages that rely on an external API which I would like to build upon user request. Two options I thought about: Make lots of 'thin' pages that specifies that if you want content about X, you need to log-in, and then the page will be built. Pros: user understands what he'll get when logging in. Cons: SEO implications of such a solution due to the mass 'low quality' and 'cross-sites duplicate content' Make them all redirect to ONE same generic log-in page. Pros: No duplicate low quality content. Cons: Lots of internal links to the same log-in page. Which would you recommend?

  Should a team of system administrators who are on a software development project share a project management tool with the developers or use their own separate one? We use Trac and I see the benefit in sharing since inter-team tasks can be maintained by a single system where there may be cross-over or misfiled bugs (e.g. an apparent bug which turns out to be a server configuration issue or a development cycle which needs a server to be configured before it can start) However sharing could be difficult since many system administration tasks don't coincide with a single development milestone if at all. So should a system administration team use a separate PM Tool or share the same one with the developers? If they should share, then how?

  I'm development a network card game, and for now i've two players connected but there is a problem with one of them, this one can't do anything on the game. Looks that screen was blocked. I'm think that is because a code i used before. That code is: if (InvokeRequired) { this.Invoke(new MethodInvoker(delegate { ... })); return; } The code above is surrounding code to changing Button values, make connection with server and create game window. Without this code a warning is shown. InvalidOperationException was unhandled Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'startGameButton' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.

  I'm developing a cross-platform computer software. It will run on Windows and Mac OS X. For user experience reasons, I want it to have the same graphic on both platforms. I really like the Mac OS UI controls and I'd love to see them on the Windows version too. My question is: is it legal to "copy" UI components? I'm not going to copy icons or reproduce an existing Apple software.   Just wondering what types of solutions are available to handle patching of PC/Mac games that don't have any sort of auto updater built into them. In windows do you just spin off some sort of new install shield for the game that includes the updated files, hope you can read a valid registry key to point to the right directory, and overwrite files? If so how does that translate over to Mac where the game is normally just distributed as straight up .app file? Is there a better approach than the above for an already released product? (Assuming direct sells, and not through a marketplace that features auto-updating like Steam.) Are there any off the shelf auto-updater type libraries that could also be easily integrated with a C/C++ code base even after a game has been shipped to make this a lot simpler, and that are cross platform? Also how do auto-updaters work with new OS's that want applications and files digitally signed?

What I know I can track is: -what products people view on my website (default Google Analytics pageview behaviour). -what affiliate links people click on my website (with GA _trackEvent). What am I missing is: -what products people end up buying after clicking on the affiliate links. Does the Amazon affiliate program offers you any mechanism for linking a purchase with some data from your website? I noticed that I was able to add custom parameters and values to my affiliate links and the link checker was still happy with them, if Amazon gave the links that initiated an order then I would be able to cross reference the orders using custom parameters...

  As a developer, i know how much I like learning new stuff. Now that I'm hiring developers for my startup, I know I can't compete with Google's zillion-dollar bonuses and fancy cafeterias, but we are rich with opportunities for curious people to learn. I want to set things up to support that. So if you're a developer likely to join a startup, what do you want to learn? Product things? Business things? User research, design, or tech ops things? Or if it's more technical learning you're after, do you want to go deeper in what you know (e.g., back end learning back end) or cross-train (e.g., front end learning back end)? Or is there something else entirely?
