• YouTube: Tips by Bitwise Courses on NetBeans

  I really like the potential of YouTube in providing a platform for short info clips that take not much time to produce and about as much time to consume. Huw Collingbourne's Bitwise Courses channel is full of exactly this kind of YouTube clip. Several of his YouTube clips are about or make use of NetBeans. The related Twitter account is @bitwisecourses and the homepage is bitwisecourses.com. Here's a great example, the latest YouTube clip created by Bitwise Courses. Very clear and simple explanation, on a specific and narrow topic, and very short and sweet. And very useful! Didn't know about this feature myself.   Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook is rated as the best CEO according to a report released by the popular employee reviews website Glassdoor.com. 50,000 employees reviews submitted to Glassdoor in the past 1 year are considered for preparing the rating list and Zukerberg topped the list with 99 percent approval to the question “Do you approve of the way your CEO is leading the company?”. Wow! That’s an amazing support to Zukergerg from his employees though stock market and share holders are not with him. Coincidently Facebook is also rated as the best company to work by Glassdoor in a recent survey. • Recover partition after GParted resizing interrupted by unexpected shutdown

  As I was resizing my partitions using GParted, my laptop battery ran out, and the process was interrupted. Now, I am unable to mount the partition which I was trying to resize. I get the following error when I click to mount the partition on nautilus: Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda3, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so How can I go about recovering my data? Is there a safe way to attempt to force-mount the partition in question? Any help towards recovering my data is sincerely appreciated.

• Interviews: Going Beyond the Technical Quiz

  All developers will be familiar with the basic format of a technical interview. After a bout of CV-trawling to gauge basic experience, strengths and weaknesses, the interview turns technical. The whiteboard takes center stage and the challenge is set to design a function or query, or solve what on the face of it might seem a disarmingly simple programming puzzle. Most developers will have experienced those few panic-stricken moments, when one’s mind goes as blank as the whiteboard, before un-popping the marker pen, and hopefully one’s mental functions, to work through the problem. It is a way to probe the candidate’s knowledge of basic programming structures and techniques and to challenge their critical thinking. However, these challenges or puzzles, often devised by some of the smartest brains in the development team, have a tendency to become unnecessarily ‘tricksy’. They often seem somewhat academic in nature. While the candidate straight out of IT school might breeze through the construction of a Markov chain, a candidate with bags of practical experience but less in the way of formal training could become nonplussed. Also, a whiteboard and a marker pen make up only a very small part of the toolkit that a programmer will use in everyday work. I remember vividly my first job interview, for a position as technical editor. It went well, but after the usual CV grilling and technical questions, I was only halfway there. Later, they sat me alongside a team of editors, in front of a computer loaded with MS Word and copy of SQL Server Query Analyzer, and my task was to edit a real chapter for a real SQL Server book that they planned to publish, including validating and testing all the code. It was a tough challenge but I came away with a sound knowledge of the sort of work I’d do, and its context. It makes perfect sense, yet my impression is that many organizations don’t do this. Indeed, it is only relatively recently that Red Gate started to move over to this model for developer interviews. Now, instead of, or perhaps in addition to, the whiteboard challenges, the candidate can expect to sit with their prospective team, in front of Visual Studio, loaded with all the useful tools in the developer’s kit (ReSharper and so on) and asked to, for example, analyze and improve a real piece of software. The same principles should apply when interviewing for a database positon. In addition to the usual questions challenging the candidate’s knowledge of such things as b-trees, object permissions, database recovery models, and so on, sit the candidate down with the other database developers or DBAs. Arm them with a copy of Management Studio, and a few other tools, then challenge them to discover the flaws in a stored procedure, and improve its performance. Or present them with a corrupt database and ask them to get the database back online, and discover the cause of the corruption.

• Pulseaudio no sound card detected. Dummy output only

  I'm using 12.10 Quantal with Openbox and a .xinitrc script at login instead of a display manager. Its a relatively fresh install and I noticed when I opened pavucontrol the only output was a dummy one. I check around and it appears that my soundcard is physically installed but Pulseaudio isn't detecting it. I'm really unsure what I should do but any help getting my audio back would be appreciated. • Data Storage Options

  When I was working as a website designer/engineer I primarily used databases for storage of much of my dynamic data. It was very easy and convenient to use this method and seemed like a standard practice from my research on the matter. I'm now working on shifting away from websites and into desktop applications. What are the best practices for data storage for desktop applications? I ask because I have noticed that most programs I use on a personal level don't appear to use a database for data storage unless its embedded in the program. (I'm not thinking of an application like a word processor where it makes sense to have data stored in individual files as defined by the user. Rather I'm thinking of something more along the lines of a calendar application which would need to store dates and event info and such where accessing that information would be much easier if stored in a database... at least as far as my experience would indicate.)   I have mostly work on simple java programs and compiled and run it with eclipse on Windows. So, i have no experience of using command prompt for compiling Java projects and do not have much info about what actually happens beneath the play button in Eclipse. Now i have to submit a Java application which will have basic operation on XML. My project also will have (JUnit) Unit Test. My question is related to submission of this Project. Which files would be necessary to submit the code. So, it executes properly? Does chosing eclipse as an IDE or junit as a unit testing framweork produces any dependenices i.e the executor of the program should have eclipse/libraries to execute the program on his machine?

• Unable to install any packages due to unrecoverable fatal error /var/lib/dpkg/diversions

  I am currently unable to install any packages. I receive the following error: dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: too-long line or missing newline in `/var/lib/dpkg/diversions I have tried various approaches: sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get clean sudo dpkg-divert --list sudo apt-get check sudo apt-get install -f etc. but all to no avail. Either the output was apparently normal or the error above was thrown. I'm stumped as to how to proceed and would appreciate any assistance. If any further info is required just ask. Thanks for the reply. • How to use lemodev highscore plugin for unity?

  I am trying to add a server-sided highscore system to my game in unity. I have downloaded the free lemodev highscore plugin from the asset store but I cant figure out how to use it. I know where to put my server info and so on but other what are you supposed to do ? I added the main camera prefab that came with the package to my scene but other than adding an additional camera it did precisely nothing ( at least it seems that way ). Could anyone look into it and tell me how to use it ? The developer's website seems to have no information on the subject.

• Can't connect to Wired Network after installing 12.04

  I have installed 12.04 into a used HP Compaq DC 7100 CMT. Plugged in LAN cable into the computer and it says network disconnected. from what I understand on the things I've read, it's not getting the address right, maybe it's just a guess (hardware address 00:16:35:78:47:bb). I know the LAN cable is working I can get on the net with the old computer. (Old computer is using device MAC address; Auto eth0 00:11:11:E6:4F:FE). I have put this address into the newer HP and it shows last used (minutes ago) but no Internet sever not found. I tried the hardware address it says never. I feel and think this should be easy to fix. But I just don't know.   I noticed that sometimes when browsing (with other processes in the background), I get very high CPU load for the browser process (over 100%) and the computer becomes really slow. I tried switching from Firefox (with just a few extensions) to Chromium, but same thing happens without me visiting graphics-intense sites, flash sites or anything like that. I also noticed python or node (when running "make") produce the same high CPU load from time to time so this is not necessarily browser-related. When I only have a browser open, it doesn't seem to happen and everything is fine in Windows 7. I switched from unity to gnome3 with no effect. Specs: lenovo w510 (4gb RAM, i7 q820 @ 1.73) + up to date Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. Printscreen: http://imgur.com/8MZJNKC Do you guys have any idea why this might happen?   I am working on making a custom Ubuntu 11.10 based distro.(64 bit) I am adding non open source packages, replacing packages, changed user interface from Unity to GNOME, and more changes. My system is ready, and I want to create a redistributable image for my distro. When you go to system settings - system info, you see a logo with the Ubuntu name and logo, but I want to change it to the name and logo of my distro. Also, in the boot menu, I want to change the boot entry names, and the GRUB background. And I want to change the name Ubuntu from every possible location. Also, I will be sharing it with people, so I want to make my own software repositories, like linux mint has, or any other distro has, I will purchase server space for that. Also, the I want to customize the wubi installer like linux mint did and if some uses the customized tool to install my distro from Windows, they should see the name of my distro in add or remove programs page. Any help will be appreciated!

• Case Management Patterns with Oracle Unified Business Process Management Suite

  Contributed by Heidi Buelow, Oracle Product Management Case Management was a hot topic all week at Oracle OpenWorld so I was excited to share our current features and upcoming plans at the session Thursday morning on Case Management Patterns with Oracle Unified Business Process Management Suite.  My colleague, Ravi Rangaswamy, the Case Management Development Manager, and I, Heidi Buelow, the Case Management Product Manager, discussed case management use case patterns with an interested audience.  We also talked about the current BPM Suite offering for Case Managment and showed a demo of our upcoming release where Case Management becomes a first class component in a BPM composite application. Case Management use case patterns cover a wide range of horizontal applications such as Accounts Payable, Dispute Resolution, Call Center, Employee OnBoarding, and many vertical applications in domains and industries such as Public Sector services, Insurance claims, and Healthcare.  Really, it is any use case where the resolution of a request may require a knowledge worker making decisions using experienced judgement in the current situation.  This allows for expidited care and customer satisfaction, both being highly valued for consumer loyalty, regulatory compliance, and efficient resolution. Today, BPM Suite provides the tools for creating Case Management applications using BPMN 2.0, Business Rules, and rich BAM and Case Analytics.  The Process Composer provides the agility to change rules and processes by the business users.  The case manager and case workers have the flexibilty they need.  With integrated content management and the concept of a BPM Process Spaces instance (case) space, the current release enables case management use case applications. In the next release, Case Management becomes a first class component. By this, we mean, Case is a separate component in the composite.  We are adding case attributes such as milestones, case events, case stakeholders, and more, providing a rich toolset for the use cases that require a flexible Case Management approach.  Activites become available according to the conditions that you specify and information can be protected by permissions indicated.  In BPM Studio, you design a Case and associate all of the attributes and activities that are needed, yet, at runtime you have the flexibility to add and change these as needed. We enjoyed sharing Case Management and it was well received by the audience.  The presentation is available online and we have viewlets of the demo that will be available at release time.

• Ubuntu suddenly won't boot on a Mac

  I installed 11.10 in dual-boot mode following instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation Everything worked fine, until I recently updated from Mac OS 10.6.x to the latest 10.6.x (this was a minor update prompted by OS X). The update made the rEFIt screen disappear, so I ran Boot Repair and reinstalled rEFIt and everything worked. I accidentally left my computer without power while booted into Ubuntu, until it presumably died or hibernated itself. I have been unable to boot into Ubuntu since. I didn't see the GRUB screen when I selected Linux the rEFIt chooser. Then I reinstalled rEFIt and the Linux option disappeared from the rEFIt chooser. • Is wubi for Windows 8?

  My Dell laptop shipped with Windows 8. I installed Ubuntu 12.10(64 bit) through wubi installer, the installer worked fine till the reboot demanding screen. But after the reboot, my laptop boots to a black screen with the problem stated: " File: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000007b Info: The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. " I checked for the specified path in my c drive(windows 8) and i found the file there. Now, whats the problem. Is it the compatibility of wubi with windows 8 or something else?? Could anyone help

• How do I get Unity working again after installing the wrong video driver?

  First off I did something stupid. I downloaded a Nvidia driver even though I have an integrated chipset. After installation my unity was still working. However, when I restarted my computer I got an error message saying that I can't run unity. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver. I restarted my computer. Unity still does not work. In the terminal I type "unity" and everything looks okay until I get three error messages that say this: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". followed by: Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: glXCreateContext failed Compiz (bailer) - Info: Ensuring a shell for your session jesse@jesse-PC:~$ Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.
