• Upgrading Windows 8 Consumer Preview to Release Preview

  I currently have my main hard drive split into two partitions. One being Windows 7 with about 600 GB of memory, the other Windows 8 Consumer Preview with about 50 GB. As you can guess it is set up for a dual boot. Today while looking up how to get the C# Facebook SDK for Metro apps I learned about the Release Preview being released. I was wondering: How do I go about getting rid of Windows 8 Consumer Preview and replacing it with the Release Preview? I know i can't just wipe it off my second partition because the dual boot uses Windows 8 to choose the operating system to boot.

• How to blend multiple normal maps?

  I want to achieve a distortion effect which distorts the full screen. For that I spawn a couple of images with normal maps. I render their normal map part on some camera facing quads onto a rendertarget which is cleared with the color (127,127,255,255). This color means that there is no distortion whatsoever. Then I want to render some images like this one onto it: If I draw one somewhere on the screen, then it looks correct because it blends in seamlessly with the background (which is the same color that appears on the edges of this image). If I draw another one on top of it then it will no longer be a seamless transition. For this I created a blendstate in directX 11 that keeps the maximum of two colors, so it is now a seamless transition, but this way, the colors lower than 127 (0.5f normalized) will not contribute. I am not making a simulation and the effect looks quite convincing and nice for a game, but in my spare time I am thinking how I could achieve a nicer or a more correct effect with a blend state, maybe averaging the colors somehow? I I did it with a shader, I would add the colors and then I would normalize them, but I need to combine arbitrary number of images onto a rendertarget. • Oracle JDK 7u10 released with new security features

  A few days ago, we released JRE and JDK 7 update 10. This release adds support for the following new platforms: Windows 8 on x86-64. Note that Modern UI (aka Metro) mode is not supported. Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) This release also introduces new features that provide enhanced security for Java applet and webstart applications, specifically: The Java runtime tracks if it is updated to the latest security baseline. If you try to execute an unsigned applet with an outdated version of Java, a warning dialog will prompt you to update before running the applet. The Java runtime includes a hardcoded best before date. It is assumed that a new version will be released before this date. If the client has not been able to check for an update prior to this date, the Java runtime will assume that it is insecure and start warning the user prior to executing any applets. The Java control panel now includes an option to set the desired security level on a low-medium-high-very high scale, as well as an option to disable Java applets and webstart entirely. This level controls things such as if the Java runtime is allowed to execute unsigned code, and if so what type of warning will be displayed to the user.   Is Gadget on Windows 7 buggy for now? For example, I made CPU Meter, Clock "always on top", but sometimes, one is on top but the other is not. I have to make it "not always on top" and then "always on top" again and it will show up on top again. another thing that might or might not be a bug is: even when viewing video in full screen mode, the gadgets are all there. This may be one case where the user won't want all the gadgets on top when viewing a video full screen.

• Make and receive calls from and to PC to mobile and vice versa

  I want to route normal phone calls (i.e. calls made from landline or mobile) to VoIP and vice versa. Fr example, if I dial a number from a PC I will be able to call the other person, and the other person is able to see my number on their screen. Similarly, if a person calls me, I can pick up a call on my PC and can see their number on my screen. I don't have any idea how to implement this – how would I go about doing that?

• MacBook Pro shutting down instantly after attempt to update firmware

  I tried to apply a firmware update on a MacBook Pro 2.4ghz (2008), and after rebooting, the fans kicked up to maximum, the screen lit up, and then it immediately died. Now when I try to boot, it does the same thing: the fans crank to max, the screen lights up, and then it dies after about 2 seconds. Resetting the power manager does nothing. It doesn't stay up long enough to choose another boot drive or boot from CD. I have no idea what else to try. Help?

  Recently upgraded to Windows 8. The problem is a lot of Sync features requires Microsoft account to linked. Even though I have one, I don't want to spare one for Sync purpose. Additionally, Google-Chrome's sync feature is absolutely charming. So I prefer Google for storing my data. So, 1) Is there anyway to replace Microsoft Sync with other accounts by patching or modifying any byte? 2) I want to replace Maps, Weather, and all possible apps with Google. I've see Mail can be done. What are the all other possible Metro apps?

• How do I fake 2 discrete monitors using a DualHead2Go?

  I just got a [Matrox Dualhead2Go|http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/] for use with my MacBook Pro. I realise that the reason it works is that it fakes 1 big (wide) monitor. I also kind of depended on the software that came with it to trick OSX into accepting it as 2 monitors. Turns out the support is kind of lame: it just adds shortcuts for maximizing the window to whatever screen you want. And it even gets that wrong, since my dock doesn't auto-hide, but it doesn't take it in account while resizing, causing my window do end up "behind" my dock. (I've made a AppleScript that does the resize correctly, that I'll post below). There's two glaring issues this causes: Full screen (video, etc.) takes up both monitors, and dialogs just pops up in the middle. Is there a way to trick OSX, or at least a way to fix these issues?

• Ubuntu 9.10 X Stuck in restart loop - I think...

  Trying out Ubuntu, installation went fine - upgraded to the proprietary nVidia drivers but on restart I get a login prompt and the screen is flashing really fast almost as if Xserver is trying to start and failing, I can type when the screen isn't in a "flash" as it were and it's so fast and random it's hard to even type a login name without it missing some characters - this makes typing a password (i.e. not being able to see which characters made it or not) very hard. I can log back into the live cd and alter my settings - but I can't even find out how to stop X stop starting on boot; Looks like they've moved everything around :-p I'd like to: Stop X from crashing and going insane (if it is actually Xserver) Know how to stop X from starting on bootup, Looks like interactive boot is also off by default now Update: A temporary work around seems to be enabling ssh and just connecting to the box over the network - ssh seems to work fine :-p Cheers, Chris

  Here's the problem I'm facing: Quote From Project Manager: Hey Sugar, I'm assigning you the task of developing a framework that could be used for many different iOS applications. Here are the requirements: It should be able to detect the thickness of the thumb or fingers being used to manipulate the UI. With this information, all elements of the UI should be arranged & sized automatically. For a larger thumb, elements should be arranged nearer the center of the screen. For a smaller thumb, elements should be arranged nearer the corners of the screen. For a larger thumb, all fonts should be smaller. (We're assuming an adult in this case.) For a smaller thumb, all fonts should be larger. (We're assuming a younger person in this case.) Summary: This framework is required for creating user-friendly user interfaces programmatically. The framework should be developed in such a way that we can use for as many projects as needed, so it must also be very developer-friendly. I am the developer given this task, so my questions are as follows: How can I explain that these requirements are a little ridiculous? How can I explain that it would be better to concentrate on developing actual projects? How can I explain that even if this were possible, I wouldn't recommended developing such a thing? How do I say NO to this project politely, gently, and respectfully? How can I explain that even for a developer with 3 years of experience, this might not be possible?

  I have two Mac notebooks at home, I have assigned them static private IPs. I have also set my router to a DynDNS address, which updates everytime my router gets a new public IP. I have enabled Screen Sharing on both notebooks. I can successfully goto my router webpage using the DynDNS address. I understand I need to port-forward to get Screen Sharing to work from outside. Lets assume, notebooks have private IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 I am kind of lost here, would appreciate some help (I need to be able remote desktop to both notebooks)

• Unity3D: How to make the camera focus a moving game object with ITween?

  I'm trying to write a solar system with Unity3D. Planets are sphere game objects rotating around another sphere game object representing the star. What i want to achieve is let the user click on a planet and then zoom the camera on this planet and then make the camera follow and keep it centered on the screen while it keep moving around the star. I decided to use iTween library and so far i was able to create the zoom effect using iTween.MoveUpdate. My problem is that the focused planet does not say properly centered as it moves. • Unity not running on startup

  OK, so Firefox was running extremely slow, I ran it in safe mode and still slow, so I rebooted and when she came back on, I wasn't at the regular Unity login, it was like a classic Windows login (where I had to enter my username and password manually, not a list of users). I logged in and only my desktop was visible (with icons and my wallpaper). Nothing else. I was able to open a terminal with Ctrl+ Alt+T and typed... sudo unity ...which got it up (albeit with the default icons on the launcher ex. I had unlocked Libre Office and it was back). In "Startup Applications..." there was absolutely nothing at all... This happens every time I reboot. Thunderbird de-synced from my Gmail but Pidgin is still connected. When I do Ctrl+Alt+L it locks the screen as normal, but I have no option to switch user. I have the only account on this computer but I cannot access the main login screen to get to my Guest account. I'm not very Ubuntu-savy, but it's pretty clear that I'm starting in some sort of safemode. I am on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (just installed it last night).

• Bluetooth mouse Logitech M555b not recognized on a Macbook Pro 8.2

  I just bought a Logitech M555b Bluetooth mouse today. My computer (a Macbook Pro 8,2) has a bluetooth connection, and it works perfectly fine on Mac OSX (I set up a new device, click the connect button on the mouse, and voilà, done in 5 seconds). I cannot get it to work on Ubuntu 12.04. When I follow the same steps as on Mac OSX under Ubuntu 12.04, Sometimes I will see the mouse name appearing for 1 second on the screen, and if I'm fast enough to click on "Continue", I will have a message telling me the pairing with my mouse failed. Here are the steps I follow: Turn off Bluetooth on Ubuntu Turn Bluetooth on. Bluetooth icon Set up new device... Turn on the mouse, and press the Connect button. Press "Continue" on the Bluetooth New Device Setup screen I see the mouse name for one second, but then it disappear. Click on PIN options... to select '0000'. ... nothing, Ubuntu won't see anything.   I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate over my existing Windows 7 Professional. I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and burned the install disc at the slowest speed possible (x3). I booted to the DVD, but at the second screen I am already getting an error! That screen I am choosing between "Upgrade" and "Custom". I am trying to choose "Custom" but then I get the error: Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. Error code: 0xE0000100

• Send Ctrl+Alt+Del over VNC with Vista and UAC off?

  I'm trying to set up a machine here with Ultra VNC on Vista with UAC off. Problem is, in this configuration, I can't send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the Vista machine and so I'm stuck at the login screen, which is waiting for the CAD sequence. I'm joined to a domain, so I don't think I can disable the CAD requirement. I can't re-enable UAC either. I also tried using the on-screen keyboard, but it didn't seem to work. Any workaround or solution?

• How to protect an OS X Server from an unauthorized physical connection?

  Hi I have an OS X 10.6 server, which I administer via SSH and VNC (via SSH tunnel). I can't leave it at the login window since then VNC connections are refused. Therefore I currently leave it logged with my user account. Since it doesn't have a monitor attached, it doesn't go into screen saver mode, which means it doesn't require a password to retake control. This means it is very easy for anyone connecting a keyboard/mouse and monitor to take control of the system. The screen saver password protection, which I can't get to activate, unlike the system's login window, is perfectly compatible with VNC connections. How could I prevent such direct access to the server without connecting a monitor and without blocking my ability to connect with VNC? Thanks!

• Installer gets stuck with a grayed out forward button.

  I have a CD with Ubuntu 10.10 and a laptop with Ubuntu 8.10. The laptop had all sorts of crud on it, and anything I wanted to keep was backed up on an external drive, so I was happy to do a wipe and reinstall instead of an update. So after a bit of faffing about trying to work out how to get the thing to boot from the CD drive, I did that. So the screen comes up with the choice: the options are Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. I choose to install and to overwrite my current installation. So far so good. I then get a progress bar labelled something like copying files (I forget the exact wording) and further options to fill in for my location, keyboard locale, username and password. On each of these screens there are forward and back buttons. On the last screen (password), the forward button is greyed out. Well, I think to myself, no doubt it will become active when that copying files progress bar completes. The progress bar never completes. It hangs. And the label changes from copying files to the chirpy ready when you are. The forward button remains greyed out. The back button is as unhelpful as you'd expect it to be. And there's nothing else to click. We have reached an impasse. I tried restarting the laptop, to test whether it actually was properly installed. It wasn't. I tried to run Ubuntu live from the CD, to test whether the disk was damaged. That wouldn't work either, but I suspect it's just because the laptop is old and has a slow disk drive. I'm typing this question on another computer using the Ubuntu live CD and it's working fine. So there's nothing wrong with the CD.

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 onto my HP Pavilion, in an attempt to make the desktop able to dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I managed to get down to the last step, and finished the installation process. After it prompted me to remove what I used to install Ubuntu, I did so, removing my SanDisk 8GB flash drive, and allowed the system to reboot. Like usual, the desktop booted with the HP image, with the options at the bottom(Boot Menu, System Recovery, etc). However, when it should have started up with Ubuntu(like I'm certain it should have done), I received the following error: Input signal out of range Change settings to 1600 x 900 From the time I installed the operating system, back in late August, till now, I've been trying to figure out how I would go about fixing this issue. My mom is also starting to get frustrated with my not having resolved the issue, as its the only desktop that has a printer installed. Is there any possible way to resolve this? To summarize the problem: -Successful boot -Screen brings up error -Screen goes to standby -Nothing else possible until desktop is rebooted, which will initiate the above three steps A few notes: -I did not back up my computer before I installed Ubuntu. I didn't have anything to write to, and basically just forgot to. : -I don't have a Recovery Disk. -I don't have the Windows 7 disk that is supposed to come with the computer. -It has been narrowed down by a friend on Skype that the problem lies with the display, and that the vga= boot command does have something to do with fixing the problem Thank you in advance for resolving this problem. • Inconsistent booting problem 12.04LTS on Asus U46E RAL7

  The laptop is dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu 11.10. For 11.10 to boot, I had to add 'nolapic' in GRUB boot options. I downloaded 12.04LTS LiveCD yesterday and made a CD and a bootable USB stick. With both USB and LiveCD, occasionally I can boot into 12.04. But many times, the boot process stuck at some point. For USB boot, sometime it works. But other times, it seems to stuck right after seeing the message: NMI watchdog enabled. takes one hw-pmu counted [0.408590] #2 The number in [] changes. Some times it stuck at #2, and sometimes at #3. For LiveCD boot, sometime it works. But when it stuck, it stuck at different places. At times, the boot process go directly to a blank screen with a blink '_' at up left corner. Sometime it went a bit further, after showing options to try/install ubuntu then stuck with a blank screen with blink '_'. Anything I can do to get around of this?

• taskbar-free window manager

  I'm looking for a window manager that is not based on the "standard" taskbar (which I find a poor idea and I'm completely tired of). I'm aware of tiling window managers and improvements in last versions of operating systems, but I can't find what I need. I suppose that any window takes the whole screen (or can be tiled), and I imagine switching between windows like that: on a hotkey or mouse hot zone the screen becomes a task switcher where tasks are organized in a somewhat convenient manner. Well, it's a bit like a taskbar with autohide, but I think there could be some more convenient ideas than simply stacking icons and descriptions... It is also supposed to be lightweight enough, for example to run on a netbook. Any suggestions?
