• Wifi network stopped being visible (and usable) (Linksys wag320n)

  Basically, my wifi network simply stopped working for no apparent reason. It doesn't appear in the list of the available networks anymore. I can see all my neighbors' networks, but not mine. It's as if it doesn't exist anymore. The internet connection (non-wifi), which goes through the same modem/router, is fine though. I already had a similar problem about one year ago (see here: Wifi network SSID not visible ), just after buying this very modem. I finally got it to work after performing two factory resets and getting rid of the Cisco "Magic" software; but this time it's not working. I use a linksys router-modem (WAG320N) which is directly connected (via network cable) to my desktop computer (Windows 7). I have (mainly) two devices that use the wifi network: my phone (Samsung Galaxy Nexus) and an Asus tablet (TF201, aka Transformer Prime). I also resurrected an old laptop computer (Dell, running Windows XP) to test that, and it doesn't see anything either (apart from the 20 other wifi networks, of course ^^). This wifi network was working just fine and has been for about a year. I haven't touched the modem settings so I have no idea what's causing the problem. I tried: making my phone "forget" about my network, hoping it would see it again after that: no luck. re-entering the network informations (SSID/password) manually on my phone: still no luck (says it's not in range) exporting the modem configuration, resetting the modem (factory reset, via modem admin), restarting it, importing the configuration: nope. factory reset, turning it off for 15 minutes, restarting, re-factory reset, and entering the configuration manually: still nothing. Has anybody experienced something similar before? Have you any suggestion to fix that? Thanks in advance. • I have finally traded my Blackberry in for a Droid!

  Over the years I have used a number of different types of phones. Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia, and now Android. Until the Blackberry, which was my last phone (and I still have one issued from my office) I had never found a phone that “just worked” especially with email and messaging. The Blackberry did, and does, excel at those functions. My last personal phone was a Storm 1 which was Blackberry’s first touch screen phone. The Storm 2 was an improved version that fixed some screen press detection issues from the first model and it added Wifi. Over the last few years I have watched others acquire and fall in love with their ‘Droid’s including a number of iPhone users which surprised me. Our office has until recently only supported Blackberry phones, adding iPhones within the last year or so. When I spoke with our internal telecom folks they confirmed they were evaluating Android phones, but felt they still were not secure enough out of the box for corporate use and SOX compliance. That being said, as a personal phone, the Droid Rocks! I am impressed with its speed, the number of apps available, and the overall design. It is not as “flashy” as an iPhone but it does everything that I care about and more. The model I bought is the Motorola Droid 2 Global from Verizon. It is currently running Android 2.2 for it’s OS, 2.3 is just around the corner. It has 8 gigs of internal flash memory and can handle up to a 32 gig SDCard. (I currently have 2 8 gig cards, one for backups, and have ordered a 16 gig card!) Being a geek at heart, I “rooted” the phone which means gained superuser access to the OS on the phone. And opens a number of doors for further modifications down the road. Also being a geek meant I have already setup a development environment and built and deployed the obligatory “Hello Droid” application.   While converting a project that used SlimDX, and therefore has unmanaged code, to .NET 4.0 I ran into the following error: Mixed mode assembly is built against version 'v2.0.50727' of the runtime and cannot be loaded in the 4.0 runtime without additional configuration information. Googling around gave me the solution, which is to add this to the applications config: <configuration> <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <supportedRuntime version="v4.0"/> </startup> </configuration> My question is, what is the useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy doing? I can't find any documentation about it.

• Can't get msbuild.exe path correct with Hudson's MSBuild plugin

  I have the msbuild plugin installed on my Hudson server, and it's attempting to execute the command, but for some reason the path I'm setting in my configuration is not being used when the msbuild task gets fired. I have the following set in the configuration of hudson's msbuild plugin: Path To msbuild.exe C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\msbuild.exe I left the name property blank. When I do a build it outputs this: Executing command: cmd.exe /C msbuild.exe /p:Configuration=Release ... Which I know is wrong because all the other examples show the [msbuild.exe] part fully qualified. I've been searching everywhere trying to figure out why this isn't getting set properly and I've hit a brick wall. Does anyone know how to fix this?

• Securing an ASP.NET MVC 2 Application

  This post attempts to look at some of the methods that can be used to secure an ASP.NET MVC 2 Application called Northwind Traders Human Resources.  The sample code for the project is attached at the bottom of this post. We are going to use a slightly modified Northwind database. The screen capture from SQL server management studio shows the change. I added a new column called Salary, inserted some random salaries for the employees and then turned off AllowNulls.   The reporting relationship for Northwind Employees is shown below.   The requirements for our application are as follows: Employees can see their LastName, FirstName, Title, Address and Salary Employees are allowed to edit only their Address information Employees can see the LastName, FirstName, Title, Address and Salary of their immediate reports Employees cannot see records of non immediate reports.  Employees are allowed to edit only the Salary and Title information of their immediate reports. Employees are not allowed to edit the Address of an immediate report Employees should be authenticated into the system. Employees by default get the “Employee” role. If a user has direct reports, they will also get assigned a “Manager” role. We use a very basic empId/pwd scheme of EmployeeID (1-9) and password test$1. You should never do this in an actual application. The application should protect from Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF). For example, Michael could trick Steven, who is already logged on to the HR website, to load a page which contains a malicious request. where without Steven’s knowledge, a form on the site posts information back to the Northwind HR website using Steven’s credentials. Michael could use this technique to give himself a raise :-) UI Notes The layout of our app looks like so: When Nancy (EmpID 1) signs on, she sees the default page with her details and is allowed to edit her address. If Nancy attempts to view the record of employee Andrew who has an employeeID of 2 (Employees/Edit/2), she will get a “Not Authorized” error page. When Andrew (EmpID 2) signs on, he can edit the address field of his record and change the title and salary of employees that directly report to him. Implementation Notes All controllers inherit from a BaseController. The BaseController currently only has error handling code. When a user signs on, we check to see if they are in a Manager role.   Hi, can any one tell me how to force maven to precede mapping .hbm.xml files in the automatically generated hibernate.cfg.xml file with package path? My general idea is, I'd like to use hibernate-tools via maven to generate the persistence layer for my application. So, I need the hibernate.cfg.xml, then all my_table_names.hbm.xml and at the end the POJO's generated. Yet, the hbm2java goal won't work as I put *.hbm.xml files into the src/main/resources/package/path/ folder but hbm2cfgxml specifies the mapping files only by table name, i.e.: <mapping resource="MyTableName.hbm.xml" /> So the big question is: how can I configure hbm2cfgxml so that hibernate.cfg.xml looks like below: <mapping resource="package/path/MyTableName.hbm.xml" /> My pom.xml looks like this at the moment: <plugin> <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId> <artifactId>hibernate3-maven-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.2</version> <executions> <execution> <id>hbm2cfgxml</id> <phase>generate-sources</phase> <goals> <goal>hbm2cfgxml</goal> </goals> <inherited>false</inherited> <configuration> <components> <component> <name>hbm2cfgxml</name> <implemetation>jdbcconfiguration</implementation> <outputDirectory>src/main/resources/</outputDirectory> </component> </components> <componentProperties> <packagename>package.path</packageName> <configurationFile>src/main/resources/hibernate.cfg.xml</configurationFile> </componentProperties> </configuration> </execution> </executions> </plugin> And then the second question: is there a way to tell maven to copy resources to the target folder before executing hbm2java? The path to mappings works fine now, I don't know what was wrong before, though. Maybe there is some issue with writing to hibernate.cfg.xml while reading database config from it (though the file gets updated). I've deleted the file hibernate.cfg.xml, replaced it with database.properties and run the goals hbm2cfgxml and hbm2hbmxml. I also don't use the outputDirectory nor configurationfile in those goals anymore. As a result the files hibernate.cfg.xml and all *.hbm.xml are being generated into my target/hibernate3/generated-mappings/ folder, which is the default value. I assume, the goal of this approach is not to generate any sources into my src/main/java or /resources folder, but to keep the generated code in the target folder. As I generally agree with this point of view, I'd like to continue with that eventually executing hbm2dao and packaging the project to be used as a generated persistence layer component from the business layer. Is this also what you meant?

I am thinking that it might be possible to add some configuration to the <requestDispatcher> since it controls caching headers. I am sure this is possible in the servlet container configuration (Jetty, Tomcat, etc.), but I would like to do this from within Solr's configuration files if at all possible. If this makes any difference, I am attempting to set an Access-Control-Allow-Origin header for CORS AJAX requests for a different host.

• Change or Reset Windows Password from a Ubuntu Live CD

  If you can’t log in even after trying your twelve passwords, or you’ve inherited a computer complete with password-protected profiles, worry not – you don’t have to do a fresh install of Windows. We’ll show you how to change or reset your Windows password from a Ubuntu Live CD. This method works for all of the NT-based version of Windows – anything from Windows 2000 and later, basically. And yes, that includes Windows 7. You’ll need a Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD, or a bootable Ubuntu 9.10 Flash Drive. If you don’t have one, or have forgotten how to boot from the flash drive, check out our article on creating a bootable Ubuntu 9.10 flash drive. The program that lets us manipulate Windows passwords is called chntpw. The steps to install it are different in 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu. Installation: 32-bit Open up Synaptic Package Manager by clicking on System at the top of the screen, expanding the Administration section, and clicking on Synaptic Package Manager. chntpw is found in the universe repository. Repositories are a way for Ubuntu to group software together so that users are able to choose if they want to use only completely open source software maintained by Ubuntu developers, or branch out and use software with different licenses and maintainers. To enable software from the universe repository, click on Settings > Repositories in the Synaptic window. Add a checkmark beside the box labeled “Community-maintained Open Source software (universe)” and then click close. When you change the repositories you are selecting software from, you have to reload the list of available software. In the main Synaptic window, click on the Reload button. The software lists will be downloaded. Once downloaded, Synaptic must rebuild its search index. The label over the text field by the Search button will read “Rebuilding search index.” When it reads “Quick search,” type chntpw in the text field. The package will show up in the list. Click on the checkbox near the chntpw name. Click on Mark for Installation. chntpw won’t actually be installed until you apply the changes you’ve made, so click on the Apply button in the Synaptic window now. You will be prompted to accept the changes. Click Apply. The changes should be applied quickly. When they’re done, click Close. chntpw is now installed! You can close Synaptic Package Manager. Skip to the section titled Using chntpw to reset your password. Installation: 64-bit The version of chntpw available in Ubuntu’s universe repository will not work properly on a 64-bit machine. Fortunately, a patched version exists in Debian’s Unstable branch, so let’s download it from there and install it manually. Open Firefox. Whether it’s your preferred browser or not, it’s very readily accessible in the Ubuntu Live CD environment, so it will be the easiest to use. There’s a shortcut to Firefox in the top panel. Navigate to http://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/chntpw/download and download the latest version of chntpw for 64-bit machines. Note: In most cases it would be best to add the Debian Unstable branch to a package manager, but since the Live CD environment will revert to its original state once you reboot, it’ll be faster to just download the .deb file. Save the .deb file to the default location. You can close Firefox if desired. Open a terminal window by clicking on Applications at the top-left of the screen, expanding the Accessories folder, and clicking on Terminal. In the terminal window, enter the following text, hitting enter after each line: cd Downloadssudo dpkg –i chntpw* chntpw will now be installed. Using chntpw to reset your password Before running chntpw, you will have to mount the hard drive that contains your Windows installation. In most cases, Ubuntu 9.10 makes this simple. Click on Places at the top-left of the screen. If your Windows drive is easily identifiable – usually by its size – then left click on it. If it is not obvious, then click on Computer and check out each hard drive until you find the correct one. The correct hard drive will have the WINDOWS folder in it. When you find it, make a note of the drive’s label that appears in the menu bar of the file browser. If you don’t already have one open, start a terminal window by going to Applications > Accessories > Terminal. In the terminal window, enter the commands cd /medials pressing enter after each line. You should see one or more strings of text appear; one of those strings should correspond with the string that appeared in the title bar of the file browser earlier. Change to that directory by entering the command cd <hard drive label> Since the hard drive label will be very annoying to type in, you can use a shortcut by typing in the first few letters or numbers of the drive label (capitalization matters) and pressing the Tab key. It will automatically complete the rest of the string (if those first few letters or numbers are unique). We want to switch to a certain Windows directory. Enter the command: cd WINDOWS/system32/config/ Again, you can use tab-completion to speed up entering this command. To change or reset the administrator password, enter: sudo chntpw SAM SAM is the file that contains your Windows registry. You will see some text appear, including a list of all of the users on your system. At the bottom of the terminal window, you should see a prompt that begins with “User Edit Menu:” and offers four choices. We recommend that you clear the password to blank (you can always set a new password in Windows once you log in). To do this, enter “1” and then “y” to confirm. If you would like to change the password instead, enter “2”, then your desired password, and finally “y” to confirm. If you would like to reset or change the password of a user other than the administrator, enter: sudo chntpw –u <username> SAM From here, you can follow the same steps as before: enter “1” to reset the password to blank, or “2” to change it to a value you provide. And that’s it! Conclusion chntpw is a very useful utility provided for free by the open source community. It may make you think twice about how secure the Windows login system is, but knowing how to use chntpw can save your tail if your memory fails you two or eight times!   Context A number of my application user configuration files are kept in a git repository for easy sharing across multiple machines and multiple platforms. Amongst these configuration files is .gitconfig which contains the following settings for handling the carriage return linefeed characters [core] autocrlf = true safecrlf = false Problem These settings also gets applied on a GNU/Linux platform which causes obscure errors. Question What are some best practices for handling these platform specific differences in configuration files? Proposed solution I realize this problem could be solved by having a branch for each platform and keeping the common stuff in master and merging with the platform branch when master moves forward. I'm wondering if there are any easier solutions to this problem?

  Hello all, I am developing a Blackberry application. I am trying to send SMS programmatically to GSM number. I have gone through many queries and answers related to that and finally added the code for that as below. When the code tries to execute sending some text message to the particular mobile number, it doesn't send and throws exception as "blocking operation not permitted on event dispatch thread". So i created a separate background thread where i put the SMS code and running the code now. But still observing the same exception. • Switching VS2010 to use Windows 7.1 SDK

  I've used VS2008 on my development machine for some years now, with windows SDK v7.1. I've installed VS2010, and it's using the Windows SDK v7.0a, but I need it to use the Windows 7.1 SDK (which I had installed prior to installing VS2010). When I run the Windows SDK 7.1 configuration tool, to switch the Windows SDK in use, the tool updates for VS2008, but not for VS2010. The message it reports is: "The Windows SDK Configuration Tool has successfully set Windows SDK version v7.1 as the current version for Visual Studio 2008" The configuration tool is installed with the Windows 7.1 SDK and is found here: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Setup\WindowsSdkVer.exe" VS2010 continues to use WSDK 7.0a, which extremely frustrating, as I need to do DirectShow development (so I need to build the baseclasses, which aren't released with 7.0a release of WSDK). Would I be correct in assuming that it's not updating VS2010 settings because VS2010 wasn't installed at the time that I installed Windows 7.1 SDK? Can I fix this manually, or should I uninstall Windows 7.1 SDK, then reinstall it? Any other suggestions / workarounds for this?

• ssms cannot connect to default sql server instance without specifying port number

  I have multiple SQL Server 2005 instances on a box. From SSMS on my desktop I can connect to that box's named instances with no problem. After some recent network configuration changes, when I want to connect to the default instance from SSMS on my desktop, I have to specify the port number. Before the network changes, I did not have to specify the port number of the default instance. If I remote to any other box (including the one in question), and use that box's SSMS to connect to that default instance, success. From my desktop, and only from my desktop, I have to specify the port number. Is it a SQL Server configuration that I've missed? Is it possible something in my PC's configuration is getting in the way? Where would I look, or what could I pass on to the network folks to help them resolve this? Any help is appreciated.

  Hi, I'm a bit of a visual studio noob. I have just restarted a project in which I am using NHibernate. The project worked fine last time I used it but now is giving the following error. System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'Iesi.Collections, Version=1.0.0.3, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=aa95f207798dfdb4' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) at NHibernate.Cfg.Configuration.Reset() at NHibernate.Cfg.Configuration..ctor(SettingsFactory settingsFactory) at NHibernate.Cfg.Configuration..ctor() at Luther.Dao.Repositories.Session.NHibernateHelper..cctor() in NHibernateHelper.cs: line 18 I notice the current reference to the iesi dll ia at 1.0.1.0. What is the best way to get this up and running again? Try and find the appropriate version of the dll or sort out the manifest file? Any pointers much appreciated.
