• Developing for Chrome App/Android?

  I have been developing for win7 mobile (XNA/silverlight and will continue to do so, love everything about it) but I wanted to branch a few of my more polished games to google app store online, and perhaps android(though not sure, as with all the different versions it makes learning/loading applications a bit tricky) What is the most versatile language to start learning from chrome apps/android: Java would be excellent for android, but could I port it to a web app for chrome? (and its close to C#) Flash would work for a web app as I can just embed it into a html page (have done actionscript before, didn't care much for the IDE though), but would it also work on android? or I guess there is always C/C++ but haven't heard much about that, though I think it works for both (though C++ does interest me) Any advice would be excellent, thanks.

• Learning Erlang vs learning node.js

  I see a lot of crap online about how Erlang kicks node.js' ass in just about every conceivable category. So I'd like to learn Erlang, and give it a shot, but here's the problem. I'm finding that I have a much harder time picking up Erlang than I did picking up node.js. With node.js, I could pick a relatively complex project, and in a day I had something working. With Erlang, I'm running into barriers, and not going nearly as quickly. So.. for those with more experience, is Erlang complicated to learn, or am I just missing something? Node.js might not be perfect, but I seem to be able to get things done with it.

  Ubuntu offers to encrypt your home folder during installation. If you decline the encryption and change your mind later, you don’t have to reinstall Ubuntu. • Successful technical communities except for open-source?

  Have you ever seen a successful technical community -- e.g. user group, industry organization? Am I asking about a group of software engineers who get together F2F (or maybe online) and discuss technical and industry issues with deep zeal and interest -- a place where meaningful connections are made. Here are the only examples I have ever seen: Open source Maybe the Silicon Valley Java Users' Group Homebrew Computing Club in the '70's This sort of thing does exist in academia. Of course, there are lots of conferences and attempts at user's groups. However, almost all committed, serious software engineers, when asked about this, say "I don't have the time", which means that the organizations are not worthwhile to the best in our profession. Has anyone seen any organizations with an ongoing spirit of enthusiasm from top software engineers?

  While preparing my slides e demos for the forthcoming SQL Server Conference 2012 in Italy, I’ve come across a nice addition to DTS Expression language which I never noticed before and that seems unknown also to the blogosphere: REPLACENULL. REPLACENULL is the same of ISNULL in T-SQL. It’s *very* useful especially when loading a fact table of your BI solution when you need to replace unexisting reference to dimension with dummy values. • Getting bank account information from a bank and displaying on a website [closed]

  Hello I am looking for a way to get bank account information (transactions and balance) from a financial institution and display it on a website. The question is vague intentionally.... Everything is open. I haven't chosen a bank, serverside technology or front end technology. The idea is to have a script run automatically periodically (once or twice a day) and get the latest account information from the bank server automatically. Probably something in the direction of OFX (Open financial exchange), HBCI (home banking c.. interface), fnts or something like it. Even working over a closed source API is not out of question: Wesabe or Mint or something.   This question already has an answer here: Where can I get a device with 'Ubuntu for phones' pre-installed? 1 answer I really like the look of Ubuntu touch and I want it ASAP, however, I am NOT willing to buy a device simply to port ubuntu touch on it. I don't want to void all warranties and take any risks. Therefore, I am really just waiting for official ubuntu touch hardware (devices made for ubuntu touch). I can't find any rumours or estimated release dates online, in fact, I can't find out anything at all. Can anyone? If so, what and where? When do you think they'll be official hardware? • Help with creating symbolic link

  I'm a little bit confused with how the symbolic links work. I hope someone can guide me in the right direction. I want to put a demo online from our software, which normally only runs locally on a Mac Mini. So I put all the files in the var/www from my Ubuntu 12.04 server installation. There are a lot of hardcoded links in the software which point to "/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/narrowcasting" Of course I can change all these code on my html/php files in /var/www, but that would be quite annoying. I hope I can fix this by creating a symbolic link. For example I have a directory called thumb in /var/www/thumb. The php code is trying to put a image in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/narrowcasting/thumb. Can anyone give me a tip how to achieve this with a symbolic link? Thanks in advance.

• automatically starting crashplan backup when a usb harddisc is connected

  Using CrashPlan I've configured two backup sets: online backup in crashplan's cloud (this is running perfectly) a local backup on a usb harddisc directly connected to the local laptop. The USB drive is only connected rarly when being at home. When connecting the drive it mounts automatically. Is there a way to start the local backup whenever the usb disc connected. My guess is that using udev it should be possible to "somehow" tell crashplan to reevaluate the presence of backup location. Any ideas to do this?

• Webhosting for a TV channel with streaming video

  Hi guys, I'm making a website for a web based TV channel, so I'm assuming it will be heavy on bandwidth usage, but I'm no good at calculating bandwidth. Couple of questions: Assuming the site streams HD video 24 / 7 to 1000 people, how much bandwidth is that? Where should something like this be hosted? The channel will have a fiber internet optic connection, but I don't know the limit on their bandwidth, would it be better to get their own server or host online? In either case in question 2, any recommendations? I'm usually a regular web designer for minor businesses, so this is a new level. Your help is appreciated.

  I'm creating a question to see if my understanding of MVC separation is correct, I haven't been able to find a clear answer anywhere online. So is this the right way to implement it (in Java): I would have 3 .java files, one each for Model, Controller, View. I would put all the classes related to Model in the Model.java like so: //Model.java { public class Model //class fields public Model(); public ModelClassA(); public ModelClassB(); public ModelClassC(); } With the ModelClasses being any class that I consider belonging to the Model. Is it correct to have the classes within the Model Class, as I have read that nested classes should be avoided where possible.

  I have no internet on Ubuntu 12.04.1 so i'm on a desktop so I got to install a .exe program to run my wireless card for my desktop so I got internet access, But I can't seem to download wine or its source files. If I do I put on my usb and boot into Ubuntu but then when I try to open it I get the programs source files etc. Anyone who could help me Please do :| ( I can't install wine from software center since I have no connection online). Note : I can download my stuff on windows 8 boot so I can transfer files to my usb to run on Ubuntu.

• Star Trail Photos Taken from the International Space Station

  While most people have seen a star trail photo or two, seeing a set of star trail photos taken from over 300 miles above the Earth’s surface is a treat. Courtesy of Astronaut and Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit, the photos capture star trails from the vantage point of the International Space Station. He explains his technique: My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure.   Let's say I have an online game with a downloadable client / browser plugin. I want to track performance of my software and automatically send summary to the server. Let it be fps, latency, load time, physics step calc. time, whatever... I also want tools to perform data analysis: per session stats, per hardware stats, avgs, totals, diagrams, etc. So that I could see what are the real world hotspots / bottlenecks. Is there any common out-of-the-box / SaS solution?

• What options do I have for game hosting.

  DISCLAIMER: I know this question starts to leave development island but it is very game development related and still think this is the best place. I see many free MMOs/online desktop client games out there. I am baffled at the ability to fund such. I don't mind hosting myself but would at least like to have someone host a matchmaking service. If these indie devs really are pouring money down the server drain then I'm screwed but if some one can "learn me" :) some alternatives I would greatly appreciate it.

• Diabetic trying to use Ubuntu with Medtronic Carelink insulin pump support USB device

  I am taking a wild shot here: I am a type 1 diabetic who is going on the Insulin pump. Unfortunately, the Medtronic Carelink USB device that uploads data from the pump online only has windows drivers. Has anybody managed to get this working under Ubuntu using Wine or by any other method: lsusb yields: Bus 001 Device 014: ID 0a21:8001 Medtronic Physio Control Corp. MMT-7305WW [Medtronic Minimed CareLink] I really don't want to buy a windows machine just for this, but it's probably one in a million that somebody else has managed to make this work under Linux.
