  • Trouble setting IE8 browser mode to IE7

    Inspite of putting the following meta tag I am not getting the expected result: <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" > I open the developer tool window. In the same bar where the menu appears there is an item called Browser Mode: it still shows IE 8 by default. Even doing document.documentMode in the console window shows "8". Am I doing anything wrong?

Average experience in asp.net and asp.net mvc. Good in entity framework, ado.net and wcf rest services. Good in IoC/DI.

  • A tool or framework extension or code snippet for logging the internal state of objects?

    When spiking on how something works or when my unit test behave in an unpredictable manner I usually have to drop into debug mode. 99% of my time in debug mode is spent checking the values of fields on objects to verify its state. I already have log4net set up, it would seem that if I could easily add a line of code to log out the state of objects I could remove most of my need to start up the bulky debugger. The problem is of course that to expose object state implicitly you need to manually override each object's ToString() method. What I would like to be able to do is the ability to do logger.LogState(someObject) and have logged out the object state including at least a formatted list of all the private variables, references (to some arbitrary depth), and collections. Does anyone know a tool/framework/code snippet that can be used to generate a string of the internal state of any object? I could of course write one myself but its a non-trivial problem and I'd prefer something someone has put some thought into.

    I'm working with websites written in PHP, along with many other programmers, and sometimes I have to deal with really awful code. Indentation totally messed up, curly braces in the wrong places, terrible whitespace use, it really hurts my eyes and actually makes my work harder and take longer. Is there a tool where you can specify your coding style and then it applies it to files? I'm sure there must be such functions in different IDEs, but I need an independent tool as I code with simple notepads like Notepad++ or the like. ( if it's such a function in Notepad++, I didn't see it )

  • Lightweight development web server with support for PHP v2

    In line with this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/171655/lightweight-web-app-server-for-php The above question has been asked numerous times and answered exactly the same in all the cases I've found using google. My question is similar to a degree but with a different desired goal: On demand development instances. I have come up with a somewhat questionable solution to host arbitrary directories in my user account for the purpose of development testing. I am not interested in custom vhosts but looking to emulate the behaviour I get when using paster or mongrel for Python & Ruby respectively. Ubuntu 9.10 TOXIC@~/ APACHE_RUN_USER=$USER APACHE_RUN_GROUP=www-data apache2 -d ~/Desktop/ -c "Listen 2990" Is there a better solution, could I do something similar with nginix or lighttpd? Note: The above won't work correctly for stock environments without a copied & altered httpd.conf. Update: The ideal goal is to mimic Paster, Webbrick, and Mongrel for rapid local development hosting. For those light weight servers, it takes less then a minute to get a working instance running ( not factoring any DB support ). Apache2 vhost is great but I've been using Apache2 for over ten years and it would be some sort of abomination hack to setup a new entry in /etc/hosts unless you have your own DNS, in which case a wildcard subdomain setup would probably work great. EXCEPT one more problem, it's pretty easy for me to know what is being hosted ( ex. by paster or mongeral ) just doing a sudo netstat -tulpn while there would be a good possibility of confusion in figure out which vhost is what.

  • Anyone use Distributed VCS in a corporate environment?

    I'm curious to hear about people's experiences with distributed version control in a corporate environment. Specifically: Was it difficult to gain adoption? Now that it's in place, is it well liked? What 'model' are you using (hub & spoke? Something else?) Allowing you use hub & spoke, are there any discipline problems with pushing to a central server? I'd like to hear if anyone has non-programmers working within this environment, preferably artists and the like to whom VCS can be a bit daunting. Did it work out for them?

    Hi Everybody, i'm running Windows as well as Ubuntu and like to sync both tweetdeck installations via dropbox. Therefore i need to locate two files: td_26_[username].db preferences_[username].xml I found them on windows under the folder c:\Users[account]\AppData\Roaming\TweetDeckFast.[random string]\Local Store\ But i can't find them on my ubuntu installation.     Hi, I am collaborating with someone on a project and currently use Skype for collaboration. I like it because we can be on a call to say things that are hard to say by typing out. We can share our screens so we can help with code writing. And we can use the text chat to copy-paste code between each other. We also use Subversion for version control.     I have an application on my iPhone which sends out Http requests; is it possible to look into the HTTP stream using some tool?? I use standalone version of (IEInspector's) HttpAnalyzer tool on my windows PC to monitor HTTP traffic from all processes including the apps on Android phone (thanks to android debug bridge interface). Is there a similar tool for OS X that I can use for iPhone apps? Is this even allowed? Thanks in advance.

I've fooled with Google Notebook, MS Onenote, TreePad, textfiles, and Evernote a bit (currently leaning toward Evernote). All have pros and cons but none seem to be really suited to developers. Is anyone super-happy with a collection / note system that's not just generic GTD, but with developer-centric utility?

  • How to configure apache / php / postfix website emails when using vhosts?

    I have a LAMP webserver configured to serve multiple websites. Each virtual host has various PHP applications, mainly Wordpress. When users sign up to the Wordpress sites, email is sent by PHP through to postfix, and then on to the receiver. The problem is that postfix is identifying itself to the remote server with the contents of /etc/hostname, which is not a fully qualified domain name. Some mail servers reject this and the mail bounces. Additionally, the return path is being set to one of the vitual host domains, seemingly at random. I could set /etc/hostname to one of the website domain names, but then the emails from the other websites would have a wrong server in the headers, and this would not fix the return-path issue. Possibly related, apache2 says "could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name" on startup. How do I fix this so that each website can send email without revealing the other websites hosted on the server?

The odd part is that IE8 doesn't even report an error, WOW, and that is something. So right now im stuck with to nothing to work on or debug.     So assuming that in our work environment we've decided that the One True Faith forbids this: if (something) doSomething(); And instead we want: if (something) { doSomething(); } Is there a tool that will do that automagically? Awesomest would be to have eclipse just do it, but since we're really just recovering from one ex-employee that thought he was too pretty for coding conventions, a less-friendly tool that would do it right just once would suffice.
