  • Speaking at Sinergija12

    Next week I will be speaker at Sinergija12, the biggest Microsoft conference held in Serbia. The first time I visited Sinergija it was clear to me that this is the event where I should go back. Why? Because technical level of sessions was very well in place and actually sessions I visited were pretty hardcore. Now, two years later, I will be back there but this time I’m there as speaker. My session at Sinergija12 Here are my three almost finished sessions for Sinergija12. ASP.NET MVC 4 Overview Session focuses on new features of ASP.NET MVC 4 and gives the audience good overview about what is coming. Demos cover all important new features - agent based output, new application templates, Web API and Single Page Applications. This session is for everybody who plans to move to ASP.NET MVC 4 or who plans to start building modern web sites.   Building SharePoint Online applications using Napa Office 365 Next version of Office365 allows you to build SharePoint applications using browser based IDE hosted in cloud. This session introduces new tools and shows through practical examples how to build online applications for SharePoint 2013.   Cloud-enabling ASP.NET MVC applications Cloud era is here and over next years more and more web applications will be hosted on cloud environments. Also some of our current web applications will be moved to cloud. This session shows to audience how to change the architecture of ASP.NET web application so it runs on shared hosting and Windows Azure with same code base.   • EF4 + STE: Reattaching via a WCF Service? Using a new objectcontext each and every time?

    Hi there, I am planning to use WCF (not ria) in conjunction with Entity Framework 4 and STE (Self tracking entitites). If i understnad this correctly my WCF should return an entity or collection of entities (using LIST for example and not IQueryable) to the client (in my case silverlight) The client then can change the entity or update it. At this point i believe it is self tracking???? This is where i sort of get a bit confused as there are a lot of reported problems with STEs not tracking.. Anyway... Then to update i just need to send back the entity to my WCF service on another method to do the update. I should be creating a new OBJECTCONTEXT everytime? In every method? If i am creaitng a new objectcontext everytime in everymethod on my WCF then don't i need to re-attach the STE to the objectcontext? So basically this alone wouldn't work?? using(var ctx = new MyContext()) { ctx.Orders.ApplyChanges(order); ctx.SaveChanges(); } Or should i be creating the object context once in the constructor of the WCF service so that 1 call and every additional call using the same wcf instance uses the same objectcontext? I could create and destroy the wcf service in each method call from the client - hence creating in effect a new objectcontext each time. I understand that it isn't a good idea to keep the objectcontext alive for very long. Any insight or information would be gratefully appreciated thanks

  • Are self-described / auto-descriptive services loosely or tightly coupled in a SOA architecture ?

    I consider a self-described / auto-descriptive service as a good thing in a SOA architecture, since (almost) everything you know to call the service is present in the service contract (such a WSDL). Sample of a non self-described service for me is Facebook Query Language (FQL http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/FQL), or any web service exchanging XML flow in a one String parameter for then parsing XML and performing treatments. Last ones seem further more technically decoupled, since technically you can switch implementations without technical impact on the caller, handling compatibility between implementations/versions at a business level. On the other side, having no strong interface (diluted into the service and its version), make the service tightly coupled to the existing implementation (more difficulty to interchange the service and to ensure perfect compatibility).   • Showing Loading screen during REST service request in android app ?

    Currently here is what I am following, As soon as my app is launched, I have to send a request for REST service, It will take little time , so I thought of showing loading screen, In onCreate() of my Activity , first thing will be to show loading screen(progress dialog) , And I kick off the background Activity using AsyncTask , i.e. requesting for REST service and onPostexecute() I close the dialog and then I do setContentView(myxml); and update the UI . Can this approach be improved ? Problem which I faced was , Sometimes , Garbage collector may start(due to various reasons) and my app hangs at loading screen forever , because of Garbage collector , even request for REST service is not sent and because of it some wake up call comes and rest is disaster and Force close. But sometimes even ForceClose doesnot come fast , may be because of GC. so I cannot even go back and stuck in loading screen. Only thing which I can do at that point is to come back HOME. After that If I come back to my app its still loading , so definitely this approach seems to be a bad design. Whats the right approach ?

    An Internet Service Provider whom I used in the past, claims to provide me with Internet service. However, when I gave his technician the Hybrid Fiber - COX MAC ID on my Modem, he could not find it on his list. Also, the Internet Service Provider doesn't even have my current mailing address. All he has is my phone number and he is demanding payment. On the other hand, I use a cable service which provide TV. At this point, the Internet Service Provider is threatening to disconnect my Internet service. My question: How can I verify if I am getting the service from him or through the cable?

    The “Lessons Learned” blog has an update covering the error message "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported." "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported." OMG, a new lesson! Will wonders never cease? So I ran into an interesting issue setting up a WCF service to consume an MSMQ queue. I won't bother you with the details of how to actually build a WCF/MSMQ service; there are plenty of tutorials on the subject. I want to share with you an interesting error that I ran into and the surprisingly simple fix. The error occurs when attempting to generate a Service Reference or even simply browsing to the WSDL of your WCF/MSMQ service in the form of a YSOD with the following error: "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported." After a lot of Googling on the subject turning up plenty of questions with the same error but no answers. So I went digging into some application level config files on a server that already had a WCF/MSMQ service successfully set up by the network admin, and the answer was amazingly simple: If you are hosting an MSMQ/WCF service in IIS, you have to tell IIS to allow net.msmq protocol. It's in the advanced settings for the application or site in which you are hosting the service. .... aaaand, that's it.

However, it does include tool guidance.  Tool guidance in OUM includes: a mention of a tool that could be used to complete a specific task(s) templates created with a specific tool example work products in a specific tool links to tool resources Tool Supplemental Guides So how do you find all this helpful tool information? Start at the lowest level first – the Task Overview.  Even though the task overviews are written tool-agnostic, they sometimes mention suggestions, or examples of a tool that might be used to complete the task.  More specific tool information can be found in the Task Overview, Templates and Tools section.  In some cases, the tool used to create the template (for example, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Project and Visio) is useful. The Templates and Tools section also provides more specific tool guidance, such as links to: White Papers Viewlets Example Work Products Additional Resources Tool Supplemental Guides If you’re more interested in seeing what tools might be helpful in general for your project or to see if there is any tool guidance for a specific tool that your project is committed to using, go to the Supplemental Guidance page in OUM.  This page is available from the Method Navigation pull down located in the header of almost every OUM page. When you open the Supplemental Guidance page, the first thing you see is a table index of everything that is included on the page.  At the top of the right column are all the Tool Supplemental Guides available in OUM.  Use the index to navigate to any of the guides.   • Windows services not starting automatically?

    We've had some nasty time sync problems on our Windows Server 2008 R2 servers lately. I traced this back to something very simple: the Windows Time Service was not started! The time can't possibly sync via NTP when the time service isn't running... The Windows Time Service was set to start "automatically" in the services control panel, which I double and triple checked. I also checked the event logs and I didn't see any service failures or anything like that. In fact, it looked a heck of a lot like the Windows Time Service never started up automatically after the weekly Windows Updates were installed and the servers were rebooted. (this is set to happen every Saturday at 7 PM.) The minute I started the Time Service, the time synced fine. So, then, the question: why would a service set to start "Automatically" ... not be started automatically? That seems sort of crazy to me.

  • Web service failing when installed in seperate project from the website...

    I am totally new to web services and cannot get mine to work. My setup is on VS 2008 using IIS. I have one solution file with 3 projects in it: website, code, and services. If I put my webservice into my website and call it locally then it will work fine (it's just a hello world web service). I want to put the service into a different location for use from multiple sites. I don't know what I'm doing wrong - i've read so much conflicting info regarding disco files, access files, silverlight, flash, java, etc. I just looking for quick simple steps to create a web service that I can access from javascript and deploy to a seperate website. End goal is to have functionality in webservices so that website will call via JS and run much smoother in the loading time and async calls. Do I need to create a disco file? Do I need to configure security? -- I know this is prob best, i'm just looking to get it working at all. Do I need to allow cross browser access on IIS or on my hosted server? Are there any quick reference websites that you can recommend? Should I be using WCF as new technology? - I saw this on MSDN but seems to be more for windows apps then web apps. I'm not getting any specific error codes. I have installed the firefox debugging tools (firebug) and I can see what the headers are but I don't know how to interpret them and there is no response being passed back. Any help is appreciated!!!

  • initctl respawn does not reload configuration

    My upstart service is running with the respawn option. I was hoping that if I deploy a new service config, the config will be loaded, when the service respawns. Neither the initctl reload-configuration command forces a reload, nor the restart command. Only an explicit stop and start reloads the configuration. The problem is, that I can not stop and start the service, at deploy time. The service itself schedules its restart by just shutting down. Is this behavior by design or am I missing something? Would it change anything, if I did the respawn with a second watchdog-service by an explicit start if my service stops? Why is there a difference between an explicit start/stop and the restart command or respawn option. Thanks.
