• XML parsing error: 'A string literal was expected' when inserting values into table

  In Microsoft Sequel Server 2008 I am attempting to insert values into an sql table with the columns type_id of datatype int and xml_info of datatype XML. I am using the following query: INSERT INTO tbl_applied_devices ([type_id],[xml_info]) VALUES (1,'<Profile ID=99><Server><ID>BC4A18CA-AFB5-4268-BDA9-C990DAFE7783</ID> <Name>localhost</Name><Services></Services></Server></Profile>') But I keep getting this error: Msg 9413, Level 16, State 1, Line 4 XML parsing: line 1, character 13, A string literal was expected What am I doing incorrectly? Thank you for the help. EDIT: I found that the source of the error is the xml element's ID attribute, where seems to be what is causing the error. How can I correctly insert xml with an attribute ? Do I need to somehow escape one of the characters?

  I get this error when i try to load a VS 2008 project from TFS (Source control) The project file has been moved renamed or not on your computer After i click OK the project says "unavailable". What is the problem? how do i resolve this? i never had this problem before. Some blogs said to delete the .suo file. But i cant locate the .suo file. I deleted the entire project on my local computer so that the next time it opens it will create a new one, but i still get same error. any ideas?

  I have a WPF VB.NET project in Visual Studio 2008. For some reason, Visual Studio thinks that it needs to add an Imports MS.Internal.Xaml.Builtins to every auto-generated XAML partial class (= the nameOfXamlFile.g.vb files), resulting in the following warning: warning BC40056: Namespace or type specified in the Imports 'MS.Internal.Xaml.Builtins' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use any aliases. I can remove the Imports line, but, since this is an auto-generated file, it reappears every time that the project is rebuilt. This warning message is annoying and clutters my error list. Is ther something that can be done about it? Or is it a known bug?

  I have a SQL Server 2008 DB. I want to extract SOME tables (and associated schema, constraints, indexes, etc) and create a SQL Server Express DB. It isn't a sync of the target, we stomp on it. We ONLY need to do this in the file system (not across the wire). We are not fond of the synchronization stuff and at this point don't know how to run SSIS. We are a C# shop and a little code is ok. Like using the C# bulk import stuff, but that won't create the schema. Suggestions?

• WPF ShowDialog returns immediately

  Sometimes when I call ShowDialog on an OpenFileDialog Window in WPF, the dialog closes immediately with a return value of false. I'm calling ShowDialog in response to a button click event.   In visual studio datasource designer(The screen where you have all the UML Diagrams including relations) is there any way to refresh a table and its relations/foreign key constraints without refreshing the whole table? The way I am doing it at the moment is removing the table and adding it again. This adds all the relations and refreshes all fields. Also if I change a fields data type, is there a way to automatically refresh all the fields in the datasource? Again without deleting the table and adding it again. Reason for this is because some of my TableAdapters have quite a number of complex queries attached to them and when I remove the table the adapter gets removed as well including all its queries. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and connecting to a MySQL database.

We are potentially embarking on making many of our apps using WPF. Most of our apps are normal business apps that will not need too much eye candy. Tasteful ui is nice, but I don't see us doing lost of custom animations and such. So, my question is what 3rd party control sets are the best ones to purchase to save you time in development of apps like this? (These should work with both Visual Studio 2008 and 2010.)

  My website is running on Asp.net v4 , IIS 7 , Windows server 2008. My cpu is running on 20-30% and the site is responding quickly. Every 2-5 mins i'm receiving the following error: Event code: 3001 Event message: The request has been aborted.   Using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and a VB.NET project; I have some code which i cannot step into. The Immediate Window shows the message "Stepping over method without symbols 'Some.Namespace.Here'" How can i make sure the method always has symbols?! I need to step into every line of code. I am pressing F8 (which is "Step Into" in VS2008, from memory i think it used to be F11 in VS2005). This debugger stuff has always confused me: At the Solution level Property Pages i see a configuration dropdown with 4 values: Active (Debug), Debug, Release, All Configurations. - currently set to "Active (Debug)" At the Project level, i see a configuration dropdown with 2 values: Debug, Release. - currently set to "Debug"

• App.Config Ignored After Pre-Build Event

  I have a solution with several projects and several developers, each with their own environment (of course). To manage connection strings between each environment, I have created several app.config files for each environment: app.config.dev, app.config.qa, etc. The pre-build event simply copies the app.config.$(ConfigurationName) to app.config. This pre-build event is done for each project in the solution, and the config string is included in each (including the test project). When I use the pre-build events to manage the app.config files, the connection string cannot be found. I can get the tests to run fine by 2 methods: 1. Do not use the pre-build events to manage the app.config file selection, and do it myself or 2. If I check out app.config and make it writable, then the pre-build events work just fine. We are using Visual Studio 2008. I'm down to my last grey hair here, any ideas? Thanks in advance!

• SSIS Send Mail task limited to 255 characters in address?

  Is this a bug, or some hidden limit I can't find any documentation about? When creating a Send Mail Task in SSIS 2008, the TO, CC and BCC fields seem to have a hidden limit of 255 characters. I'm aware this is the standard limit for individual email addresses, but all three are commonly used for multiple addresses and the comment for the To field even says "separate the recipients with semicolons". But nevertheless, it truncates the address to a maximum of 255 characters. Bug, non-obvious standard, or something I'm missing? Any way around this? We were trying to build a CC list dynamically, but this has caused a rethink.

  All, We are using SQL Server 2008 with Collation Setting as 'SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS'. We are using Varchar column to store textual data. We know that we cannot store Double Byte data in Varchar column and hence cannot support languages like Japanese and Chinese without converting it to NVarchar. However, will it be safe to say that all Single Byte Characters can be stored in Varchar column without any problem? If yes then from where can I get the list of languages which needs Single Byte for storage and the list of languages which needs double byte? Any assistance in this regard is highly appreciated. • WinForms - Localization - UI controls positions different in additional Culture

  Hi, I did my UI settings.Original language is English. After that I set Localizable property to True. Copied original resx file to frmMain.de-De.resx (for example). Translated all strings. Everything works. But now I would like to change positions of controls. After that changes are visible only for original/primary Culture (En). When I change Culture to de-De then UI controls are on the "old positions"(?!) Is this normal behaviour? :O I'm unable to change controls positions on my form after localization? Can someone explain me this and give some best solution. I really have to change UI design but I don't want to manual copy all translated strings again. If my description is not clear then I can post source code, just please let me know. I use VS 2008. Greetz!

  Does anyone know of a step by step process of setting up a ColdFusion 9 cluster using IIS 7.5? Either failover or network load balance would be nice. Without IIS being clusterable in Windows 2008 R2, I'm not sure of the best means to configure the web server and ColdFusion service. Some of the things I'm looking for are..... With load balancing, what do you use out in front of the servers as a load balancer? If you're using a network share on a clustered file server for the website data files, how do you configure the ColdFusion service to run so that it has network access instead of running as Local System?

  I'm working on Visual Studio 2008, Smart Client + infragistics controls are installed and we have more than 50 User Controls. When opening the Visual Studio "Tool Box", Visual Studio is completely freezing. I couldn't work after that. I have to kill the process and open again. At this point CPU usage is around 50, CPU usage is 1 or 2 when i work on code. How to get rid out of this issue. This is really time consuming process.

  I have a web service which is queried using linq to sql but returns an array of objects. I keep getting the following error: System.Security.VerificationException: Operation could destabilize the runtime When I run a method that uses a linq statement to return an array I get this error, but only on my test server, which is windows server 2008. Everything works fine in my win 7 machine. The project is a .net 3.5. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks UPDATE: My linq queries return IQueryable.

  I am trying to compile a program I took off a cd from a book that uses directx to render 3d objects. when i press compile I get the following error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'dxerr9.h': No such file or directory I am using VC++ 2008 Express Edition and i am running off of Vista. I went to the following folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Include and I was not able to find the header there. Unless I am looking in the wrong place. When I initially installed DX sdk I allowed the installer to put everything in a default location. I am not sure If I am looking in the right places or what.

  Hi, a colleague of mine wrote a webservice that runs on port 8081 of our Windows 2008 Server. He uses the class ServiceHost, afaik this means its a standalone host (no IIS or ASP involvement). Note: I'm new into WCF ;) Now there are some issues with clients behind a firewall blocking the requests to remote port 8081 of our server (where the webservice runs). The easiest solution would be: run the webservice host at port 80 ... But: there is also a Apache 2.2 webserver running on the Windows Server, hosting some websites. By default it runs on port 80. My solution after some researching: use a virtual host to route requests to a virtual host (lets say http://webservice.[hostname]:80) to the webservice host (http://[hostname]:8081). Is this a good idea? Can Apache handle forwards to standalone webservice hosts? It would be nice if someone could lead me on to the right track :) Best regards, Niels

I know from checking out some open source stuff that they tend to have multiple projects within a solution, each with their own responsibilities. Does anyone have any advice for how to refactor this out? What should be in a separate project vs. part of the web project? Can you point me to any reference materials on the subject, or is it just something you become accustomed to with time?

Unfortunately, I cannot add a strongly typed view as easily as I am used to ‘under’ asp.net mvc. What can I do to ‘enable’ this in VS 2008 Prof? • Modifying a column with the 'Identity' pattern is not supported in WCF RIA Services

  I've been following the walkthrough for creating your first WCF RIA Services Application from Microsoft and have encountered a problem when trying to edit and update data using the SubmitChanges() method of the Data Context. The table being updated has an Identity Specification set in SQL Server 2008 on the 'CourseID' column. However the PRIMARY key is a composite of two other fields. When using SubmitChanges() the application locks up in the browser an presents an unhandled exception. By handling this exception I managed to get the message: Modifying a column with the 'Identity' pattern is not supported. This is referring to the 'CourseID' column. Turning identity specification off solves the problem, but I need the auto-incrementing ID. In what way isn't this supported. Or where am I going wrong?

  Extremely basic question. Are there common actions I can perform using keyboard shortcuts in the Windows Forms designer in Visual Studio (2008)? Alternately, could I add my own keyboard shortcuts (either through settings or macros)? It'd really be nice if I could, for example, set a control to dock/undock in its parent container by typing Alt+D. Or if I could set a control's name just by typing Alt+N and typing the name. Things like that. It's just kind of tedious to click on the item, scroll in the Properties grid to the property I want to change, type the new value, scroll to the next property I want to change, etc. Which is why I have a feeling this functionality is in there already, or is easily configurable, and I just don't know about it.
