• Cloning a Windows server with VMWare ESXi without domain membership conflicts

  We are using VMWare ESXi 3.5, and have found it quite useful for cloning a live server to then use the virtualized version to test/practice software upgrades. The trouble is, when the virtualized version fires up, it registers itself on our domain (Active Directory), causing the original server to no longer be accessible via Windows shares. The fix is to remove the virtualized version from the domain, configuring it to use a workgroup instead, deleting the Computer account in AD, and then removing the real server from the domain and re-adding it. Is there a better procedure? Note, we cannot simply disconnect the virtual network from the virtualized server, as it needs to be connected to the network to actually be removed from the domain.

• Limit number of simultaneous connections squid makes to a single server

  Note: I am asking about outbound concurrent connection limits, not inbound, which is sufficiently covered on existing questions Modern browsers typically open a large number of simultaneous connections, to take advantage of the fact that TCP fairly shares bandwidth between connections. Of course, this doesn't result in fair sharing between users, so some servers have started penalizing hosts which open too many connections. This limit can be configured client-side (e.g. IE MaxConnectionsPerServer, Firefox network.http.max-connections-per-server), but the method differs for each browser and version, and many users aren't competent to adjust it themselves. So we turn to a squid transparent HTTP proxy for central management of HTTP download. How can the number of simultaneous connections from squid to a remote webserver be limited, so the webserver doesn't perceive it as abuse of concurrent connections? Ideally the limit would be per source address. Squid should accept virtually unlimited concurrent requests from the client browser, and issue them sequentially to the remote server, only N at a time, delaying (but not dropping) the others.

• Do most front and rear USB connections deliver the same power and performance?

  I was reading this Three Monitors For Every User and there were some comments about rear USB ports being able to deliver more power than front USB ports because they are directly connected to the motherboard and closer to the power supply (by circuit board runs). Even though the front USB ports may have connectors farther from the power supply, and there are cables from the motherboard to the front ports, I think that the difference in power would be negligible (unless the case is over 5 meters long). Anyone know for sure if they are the same or different? Note that I'm not talking about an older case where the front might have been USB 1.1 and the rear USB 2.0. A modern case would have USB 2.0 on all ports. And of course using a powered hub would deliver plenty of power.

I understand the sort of skills required for a developer in PHP and MySQL. But coming to the Linux and Apache what kind of the skills exactly companies expect from a developer? On what should I be focusing in case of Linux, Apache whilst developing my website using these LAMP stack? I am going to develop a new website and want it to be using LAMP. But I want to know what difference it makes? Why LAMP stack got more demand in the job market compared to WAMP ? • Can too much abstraction be bad?

  As programmers I feel that our goal is to provide good abstractions on the given domain model and business logic. But where should this abstraction stop? How to make the trade-off between abstraction and all it's benefits (flexibility, ease of changing etc.) and ease of understanding the code and all it's benefits. I believe I tend to write code overly abstracted and I don't know how good is it; I often tend to write it like it is some kind of a micro-framework, which consists of two parts: Micro-Modules which are hooked up in the micro-framework: these modules are easy to be understood, developed and maintained as single units. This code basically represents the code that actually does the functional stuff, described in requirements. Connecting code; now here I believe stands the problem. This code tends to be complicated because it is sometimes very abstracted and is hard to be understood at the beginning; this arises due to the fact that it is only pure abstraction, the base in reality and business logic being performed in the code presented 1; from this reason this code is not expected to be changed once tested. Is this a good approach at programming? That it, having changing code very fragmented in many modules and very easy to be understood and non-changing code very complex from the abstraction POV? Should all the code be uniformly complex (that is code 1 more complex and interlinked and code 2 more simple) so that anybody looking through it can understand it in a reasonable amount of time but change is expensive or the solution presented above is good, where "changing code" is very easy to be understood, debugged, changed and "linking code" is kind of difficult. Note: this is not about code readability! Both code at 1 and 2 is readable, but code at 2 comes with more complex abstractions while code 1 comes with simple abstractions.

• How Can I prevent a specific application from being run on a specific machine using Group Policy?

  I know this is possible to do and I am working on it with limited success. I believe the Group Policy I want is "Do Not Run Specified Windows Applications" - I can enable this and add the .exe I want to the list of programs not to be run. I have tried this on my local machine by running gpedit.msc going to User Config Admin Templates System and then choosing that policy and editing and enabling it. Doing it this way verifies that it works as I could then not run the specified .exe (XenAppWeb.exe) So this is great. I have created a GPO to do the same thing in GP Management on my domain controller where we centralize this, enforced it, applied it to an OU, and put one of our machines into this OU to test it. I have let it sit there for 3 days, run gpupdate /force, and when I try to run XenAppWeb.exe on this machine, it still lets me run it fine. What can I look at to troubleshoot this? I should note that I am trying to enact this policy on Windows XP machines (Virtual Machines) Thanks, Mike

• Presentation Plugin for NetBeans IDE 7.2

  I got some excellent help from Mark Stephens, who is from IDR Solutions, which produces JPedal. Using the LGPL version of JPedal, and code provided by Mark, it's now possible to right-click the node that appears in the Presentation Window: ...after which, using a file browser (to locate a file on disk) or a URL (a very simple check is done, the URL must start with "http" and end with "pdf"), you can now open PDF files as images (thanks to conversion from PDF to images done by JPedal) into NetBeans IDE, typically (I imagine) for presentation purposes: Note that you should consider the plugin in "alpha" state. But, despite that, I've had good results. • Is a 302 redirect to a random URL from the homepage an SEO problem?

  I originally posted this on Stackoverflow, but I believe here is a better place to ask. My web application is very similar to notepad.cc which redirects to a randomly generated URL upon access, e.g. http://myapp.com/roTr94h4Gd. (Please note that notepad.cc is not my site.) Probably because of this redirect feature, when I do "fetch as Google" or "fetch as Bingbot", I get a 302 and no html content. Not even a <html></html> tag. • Why does 12.04 try but fail to hibernate, even after I enabled hibernation?

  Regarding the below (-----) info from another post, my system will try (as is said below) to hibernate, but it won't get all the way there. Hard drive activity stops, but it does not shut down. If I turn the power off, then back on, it will start, but I have to "restore previous session" in the browser and other open apps don't restart, with the accompanying hassle. So because it tries, will the suggested fix then cause it to work correctly, or is the literal "try" not really what he means?!? PLEASE NOTE - this is a desktop system, not a laptop. Before enabling hibernation, please try to test whether it works correctly by running pm-hibernate in a terminal. The system will try to hibernate. If you are able to start the system again then you are more or less safe to add an override. To do so, start editing sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla Fill it with this [Re-enable hibernate by default] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes Save by pressing Ctrl-O and exit nano by pressing Ctrl-X Restart and hibernation is back!

• Am I programming too slow?

  I've only been a year in the industry and I've had some problems making estimates for specific tasks. Before you close this, yes, I've already read this: http://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/648/how-to-respond-when-you-are-asked-for-an-estimate and that's about the same problem I'm having. But I'm looking for a more specific gauge of experiences, something quantifiable or probably other programmer's average performances which I should aim for and base my estimates. The answers range from weeks, and I was looking more for an answer on the level of a task assigned for a day or so. (Note that this doesn't include submitting for QA or documentations, just the actual development time from writing tests if I used TDD, to making the page, before having it submitted to testing) My current rate right now is as follows (on ASP.NET webforms): Right now, I'm able to develop a simple data entry page with a grid listing (no complex logic, just Creating and Reading) on an already built architecture, given one full day's (8 hours) time. Adding complex functionality, and Update and Delete pages add another full day to the task. If I have to start the page from scratch (no solution, no existing website) it takes me another full day. (Not always) but if I encounter something new or haven't done yet it takes me another full day. Whenever I make an estimate that's longer than the expected I feel that others think that I'm lagging a lot behind everyone else. I'm just concerned as there have been expectations that when it's just one page it should take me no more than a full day. Yes, there definitely is more room for improvement. There always is. I have a lot to learn. But I would like to know if my current rate is way too slow, just average, or average for someone no longer than a year in the industry.

• Embedded Nashorn in JEditorPane

  Here's a prototype for some kind of backoffice content management system. Several interesting goodies are included, such as an embedded JavaScript editor, as can be seen in the screenshot: Key items of interest in the above are as follows: Embedded JavaScript editor (i.e., the latest and greatest Nashorn technology, look it up, if you're not aware of what that is.) The way that's done is to include the relevant JavaScript modules in your NetBeans Platform application. Make very sure to include "Lexer to NetBeans Bridge", which does a bunch of critical stuff under the hood. The JEditorPane is defined as follows, along the lines that I blogged about recently thanks to Steven Yi: javaScriptPane.setContentType("text/javascript"); EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/javascript"); javaScriptPane.setEditorKit(kit); javaScriptPane.getDocument().putProperty("mimeType", "text/javascript"); Note that "javaScriptPane" above is simply a JEditorPane. Unique content identifier 'desid' used to identify that its a main topic or a comment. 'desid' starts with 'a' for Main Topic and for comment 'desid' starts with 'b'. For comment 'replyto' is the 'desid' of main topic to which this comment is associated. I like to find out the list of the top main topics that are arranged on the basis of (upvote+downvote+visits+number of comments to it) addition. The following query gives top topics list in order of (upvote+downvote+visits) select * with highest number of upvote+downvote+views by query "select * from [DB_user1212].[dbo].[discussions] where desid like 'a%' order by (upvote+downvote+visited) desc For (comments+upvote+downvote+views ) I tried select * from [DB_user1212].[dbo].[discussions] where desid like 'a%' order by ((select count(*) from [DB_user1212].[dbo].[discussions] where replyto = desid )+upvote+downvote+visited) desc but it didn't work because its not possible to send desid from outer query to inner subquery. • How can I troubleshoot SSD disconnection problems on Windows 7?

  I have a small SSD (Transcend StoreJet TS256GESD200K) which I am using on several computers. The drive is formatted with NTFS and recently I started noticing disconnects. Normally one probably wouldn't notice (you don't even get the notification sound in Windows when it disconnects), but since I use USBDLM and run a VM from that SSD, I get to see this first-hand. How could I best figure out whether the problem is the hardware (SSD, USB socket, USB cable or something in the PC) or software? In short: how can I locate the source of the disruption so that I can work on removing the problem? Side-note: SMART status for the SSD is clean.

• Text Formatting toolbar continuously disappears in Impress (open office)

  This is a very weird and annoying problem. Not sure if it's a bug or a "feature" I'm using OpenOffice 3.2 (within Ubuntu 10.04). The Text Formatting toolbars disappear in many circumstances, e.g. each time I click out of a writing area. It's becoming very time consuming to go to View-Toolbars-TextFormatting to re-enable it each time. 3 questions: is this expected behavior, and if so, is there any setting where I can change it? (note this wasn't happening in the past with other presentation I made)? is there a workaround, such as defining a shortcut like CTRL-whatever that would make the toolbar appearing without menu joggling? is anybody experiencing this too, especially someone using LibreOffice?

• GVim Stop at end of line with arrows

  When using the arrow keys in Vim on Linux, they act the same way as h and l , stopping when the end of a line is reached. GVim on Windows doesn't do this, instead allowing the arrow keys continue past the end (or beginning) of a line and on to the next line. Is there any way to change the arrow key behaviour and cause them to stop at the end of a line like the character navigation keys? NOTE: I am not looking for a way to get to the beginning or end of a line, I realize that 0 and $ do this.

• My Windows Phone 7 experience: 45 days in

  November 13th, 2010 was the day I got my Windows Phone 7.  It was an exciting day, a lot of anxiety too.  Over a phone? Sadly, yes! Being a Zune Pass subscriber, it was something worth looking forward too, being a consultant that relies and works with Microsoft technologies and having the option of OneNote (without converters and such) on my phone was a great thing too. Has that changed over 45 days?  No, not really.  But I find myself at the very same place I was with my iPhone, I don’t really use the music player as I spend enough time in front of a computer where I have Pandora and the Zune Desktop.  Or in a car with Satellite Radio.  As for OneNote, that keeps me hooked and with access to my notes no matter where I take them. The Device: Samsung Focus Likes: OneNote integration, Zune capabilities (just note my comment above), fast and smooth interface, calendar, tiles, the device itself. Dislikes: Heavy glitches in SharePoint interaction. And a very weird one I have experienced is, any pictures I get sent from an iPhone via email will register as an attachment but the pictures are not listed as the attachment once I open the message … weird!!  Then, of course, some apps have not made it to the platform (not sure they ever will … Pandora??!!??  Chase??!!??).  But those apps missing is not the phone, or Microsoft’s fault (IMO).  In summary, I am happy with it, and some of the missing apps have made me shift the way I work with the products or features affected … meaning I rely on my desktop stuff for that.

• How do I fix the display of Windows 7's Control Panel?

  This has really bugged me since I took the plunge and upgraded to Windows 7. I think everything is great on the whole apart from the Control Panel. Instead of ordering from top to bottom like in normal folders, it is ordered from left to right. Whenever I go to find something in Control Panel it takes 3 times as long because I expect to find Programs and Features below Power Options yet it is to the right. This is a screenshot to demonstrate - note the ordering goes across instead of down. My question - does anyone have a cunning fix to display the Control Panel ordered in the same way that normal folders are displayed?

• OS X server 10.6 - how to restore default groups?

  I've set up my OS X server as an open directory master first, then (experimenting), I've changed it to standalone server, then set it back as an open directory master again. Now, all the default groups I saw before are gone (Domain Administrators, Domain users etc). Do you know how to restore these groups? Note that the groups are gone only from the Workgroup Manager UI. They do seem to be still there otherwise. id -G gives the usual list of groups. If I create an account and makes its primary group 'staff', Workgroup Manager shows all the inherited groups properly (but not on the main list). If I create an account and associate it to a new group I just created, then the account has no inherited groups...

• How do I setup Apache with FastCGI and Ruby?

  I've been reading alot of forum posts, tutorials, etc., about setting up apache under linux with fastcgi. I'm trying to run fcgi for some of my ruby development (not rails), but I figure it should apply to any language. Please note that I already have apache, fastcgi, ruby-fcgi, and the like already installed on my web box. Conceptually, I'm having a hard time with it. Does apache spawn the specified fcgi processes as needed? Do I start them along side apache? Basically, I'm trying to get to a point where I am able to ask the proper questions, so apologies if the title is misleading.

• Ubiquitous Language and Custom types

  Note that my question is referring to those attributes that even on their own already represent a concept ( ie on their own provide a cohesive meaning ). Thus such attribute needs no additional functional support and as such is self-contained. I'm also well-aware that even with self-contained attributes the custom types may prove beneficial ( for example, they give the ability to add new behavior later, when business requirements change ). Thus, my question focuses only on whether custom types for self-contained attributes really enrich Ubiquitous Language UL a) I've read that in most cases, even simple, self-contained attributes should have custom, more descriptive types rather than basic value types ( double, string ... ), because among other things, descriptive types add to the UL, while the use of basic types instead weakens the language. I understand the importance of UL, but how does having a basic type for a self-contained attribute weaken the language, since with self-contained attributes the name of the attribute already adequately describes the concept and thus contributes to the UL vocabulary? • Why would one bother marking up properly and semantically?

  Note that I (try) to mark up as semantically as possible because I like they way it looks and feels, but not because I'm aware of any other stunning advantages. The point of my question is to be able to educate others Well, I've seen a lot of articles and tutorials which often state "Let's mark this up in the most semantic possible way". But a strange thought came to me, why? Why would one need (or want) to bother with the specific elements which convey the correct semantic meaning? Specifically, I'm referring to the new HTML5 elements, such as <time>, <output>, or <address>. Especially, if the page "works" (it renders nicely in all browsers). Why would I want to use elements like <time> or <address>, where nothing at all (or at the worst case, a generic <span>) works just as nicely? I'm asking this because I'm seeing a multitude of (very popular) websites (this one included) which does not follow these so-called best practices.
