  • What is the correct way to use Chef-server's 'validation key'?

    It seems to me that the recommended way of adding clients to a chef server - or my understanding of it - is flawed. from the docs: When the chef-client runs, it checks if it has a client key. If the client key does not exist, it then attempts to "borrow" the validation client's identity to register itself with the server. In order to do that, the validation client's private key needs to be copied to the host and placed in /etc/chef/validation.pem. So the "validation key" is basically the superuser credential, allowing anyone who possesses it full access to the chef server? Am I reading this right? Surely the correct model would be for clients to generate their own keypair, and submit the public key to the chef server. Clients should never need access to this superuser "validation key". How can I do it in this, more secure, manner?

If I use pipeServer.WaitForConnection() everything works fine, but hanging the application if the pipe doesn't connect is not an option.

  • Why do I get a connection error / timeout when using python suds to connect to Microsoft CRM?

    When I try to connect to an MS CRM web service using suds/python-ntlm, I am getting a timeout on requests. However, the code that I'm trying to replace -- which calls out to the cURL command line app to do the same call -- succeeds. Clearly something is different in the way that cURL is sending the command data, but I'll be damned if I know what the difference is. Below are the full details of the various calls.   • HTTP 500 ERROR on CAS Server while setting SSLVerifyClent as "required"

    I have 3 servers, a Apache Server, a JBOSS Server and a CAS Server for SSO. The Apache Server resolve all request with a domain such as www.request.com, and the path of CAS Server is www.request.com/cas, and JBOSS Server is www.request.com/jboss (This app got a CAS client). My problem is if I set SSLVerifyClient require for the NameVirtualHost of www.request.com in my Apache Server, I got a HTTP 500 error during the redirecting to the JBOSS Server(http://www.request.com/jboss), after logined in the CAS login page successfully.     Hi All, I am trying to play video files from iPhone media player in my iphone application.I am reading the stream from one Media server. but i am getting error message as "The server is not configured correctly". Here is my observation: - I kept five different video files on server.(i am sure that all of these files are properly encoded and in right format.) - When i try to run same video URL in Mobile Safari i works perfectly without any error. - When i try to run any of video it doesn't create any stream on media server.(Usually when i try to play video it create stream on media server.but here the stream is not created on server side.) - I tried to play this files using Apple's sample application MoviePlayer but i am facing same issue.(Here i tried to run the application on Simulator) I also checked on my iphone 2G having OS 3.1.2 (jailbreak) but i face same issue. I want to be able to use the 'typical' jquery "add new stream" method to add a new entry into a mapping table that holds the chart_id, and stream_id..   • Streaming input to System.Speech.Recognition.SpeechRecognitionEngine

    I am trying to do "streaming" speech recognition in C# from a TCP socket. The problem I am having is that SpeechRecognitionEngine.SetInputToAudioStream() seems to require a Stream of a defined length which can seek. Right now the only way I can think to make this work is to repeatedly run the recognizer on a MemoryStream as more input comes in.   • How to explain to users the advantages of dumb primary key?

    Primary key attractiveness I have a boss(and also users) that wants primary key to be sophisticated/smart/attractive control number(sort of like Social Security number, or credit card number format) I just padded the primary key(in Views) with zeroes to appease their desire to make the control number sophisticated,smart and attractive. But they wanted it as: first 2 digits as client code, then 4 digits as year year, then last 4 digits as transaction number on that client on a given year, then reset the transaction number of client to 1 when next year flows. Each client's transaction starts with 1. e.g. WM20090001, WM20090002, BB2009001, WM20100001, BB20100001 But as I wanted to make things as simple as possible, I forgo embedding their suggested smartness in primary key, I just keep the primary key auto increments regardless of client and year. But to make it not dull-looking(they really are adamant to make the primary key as smart control number), I made the primary key appears to them smart, on view query, I put the client code and four digit year code on front of the eight-zero padded autoincrement key, i.e. WM200900000001. Sort of slug-like information on autoincremented primary key. Keeping primary key autoincrement regardless of any other information, we are able keep other potential side effects problem when they edit a record, for example, if they made a mistake of entering the transaction on WM, then they edit the client code to BB, if we use smart primary key, the primary keys of WM customer will have gaps in their control number. Or worse yet, instead of letting the control numbers have gaps/holes, the user will request that subsequent records of that gap should shift up to that gap and have their subsequent primary keys re-adjust(decremented). How do you deal with these user requests(reasonable or otherwise)? Do you yield to their request? Or just continue using dumb primary key and explain them the repercussions of having a very smart/sophisticated primary key and educate them the significant advantages of having a dumb primary key?   • what's the alternative to readonlycollection when using lazy="extra"?

    I am trying to use lazy="extra" for the child collection of Trades I have on my Client object. The trades is an Iset<Trade Trades, exposed as ReadOnlyCollection<Trade because I do not want anyone to modify the collection directly. As a result, I have added AddTrade and RemoveTrade methods. Now I have a Client Search page where I need to show the Trade Count. and on the Client details page I have a tab where I need to show all the trades for the Client in paged gridview. What I want to achieve is, for the search when I say on the client object as client.Trades.Count, nHibernate should only fire a select count(*) query. Hence I am using lazy="extra". But because I am using a ReadOnlyCollection, nHibernate fires a count query & a separate query to load the child collection trades completely. Also, I cannot include the Trades in my initial search request as this would disturb the paging because a counterparty can have n trades which would result in n rows, when I am searching clients only. So the child collections have to be loaded lazily. The second problem is that on the client details page -- Trades grid view, I have enabled paging for performance reasons. But by nature nHibernate loads the entire collection of trades as the user goes from one page to another. Ideally I want to control this by getting only trades specific to the page the user is on. How can I achieve this? I came across this very good article. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/876976/implementing-ipagedlistt-on-my-models-using-nhibernate But I am not sure if this will work for me, as lazy=extra currently doesnt work as expected with the ReadOnlyCollection. So, if I went ahead and implemented the solution this way and further enhanced it by making the List/Set Immutable, will lazy=extra give me the same problem as with ReadOnlyCollections?

    I am communicating with a server, each message sent to the server has to be padded with the length of the message, unsigned int len = htonl(msg.size()); In C running the length through htonl and padding the message works, in Java AFAIK byte order is already in network order so I assumed all I have to do is write the string length before the message to the stream, but this does not work am I missing something? stream.write(msg.length()); stream.write(msg.getBytes()); Stream is an OutputStream.

    In vb.net, how can I use SaveAsXML and LoadFromXML (DockPanel Suite functions) with My.Settings? I know there is a way to save it to a stream, but I don't know enough about System.IO to do this. I am finding that if this part of code is hit by 4 threads at once I get an OutOfMemory exception. I can stop this happening by wrapping all the code above in a lock(obj) but this isn't ideal. I have tried wrapping just the first using block (where the file is read from disk and split) but I still get the out of memory exceptions (this part of the code executes quite quickly). I this normal considering the amount of memory this should be taking up? Are there any optimisations I could make? Can I increase the memory available?     I am trying to work to secure a java based RMI service using SSL. I have some basic questions about the capabilities of using SSL. Specifically, from what I understand, the client and server connecting via SSL will need to have appropriate credential certificates in both client and server, for a client to be granted access to the server. Am I correct in my understanding? Also, what I want to know is, can a person who is already using my RMI service and has access to a client machine , make a copy of the certificate in the client machine to other client machines-- and then invoke my RMI service from those other machines as well? How do I prevent such a situation from occurring? I mean, in a REST API you can use OAuth authentication, can we have some kind of authentication in an RMI Service? Also, can I possibly limit usage of the RMI service? For eg, a specific client may be allowed to make only 5000 calls per day to my RMI service, and if he makes more calls the calls occurring after the 5000 calls limit are all denied? How do I do such rate limiting and/or authentication for my RMI Service?
