• Help with SOAP request using PHP

  I'm having a SOAP related problem in PHP. I'm trying to create arbitrary SOAP request using Nusoap_client class. The complete request including headers should look like the example below. Ofcourse the placeholders (string) should be replaced with actual values. • Using LinqExtender to make OData feed fails

  A pretty simple question, has anyone here tried to make a OData feed based on a IQueryable created with LinqExtender? I have created a simple Linq-provider that supports Where, Select, OrderBy and Take and wanted to expose it as an OData Feed. These two queries are basicly the same. The first is the legacy-api where the OrderBy and Select is regular Linq to Objects.   I have two Ajax CascadingDropDown extenders on my page. After a postback, the value of the first dropdown is set (presumably) triggering an event for the second dropdown to refresh. Question: How do I maintain both the contents (from queries) and selected value of both dropdowns after postback? C# answers also welcome. • SQL Server Express 2008 R2 Installation error at Windows 7

  Hello, I created install script that will install SQL Server 2008 R2 on windows XP SP3, windows vista and windows 7. One of the command that i used in the installation is for silent installation of SQL Server 2008 R2. When i install it on windows XP everything works just fine but when i try to install it on Windows 7 i get an error. What am I doing wrong? • Provide a user with service start/stop permissions

  I have a very basic domain that I use for development. I want to create a GPO that provides users in the Backup Operators group with start/stop permissions for two specific services on a specific server. I have read several articles about this, and they all indicate that this is very easy. Create a GPO, give the user start/stop permissions to the services under Computer Configuration Policies Windows Settings Security Settings System Services, and voila. Done. Not so much, but I have to be doing something wrong. My install is pretty much the default. The domain controller is in the Domain Controllers OU, the Backup Operators group is under Builtin, and I created a user called Backup under Users. I created a GPO and linked it to the Domain Controllers OU. In the GPO I give the Backup user permission to start/stop two specific services on the server. I forced an update with gpupdate. I used Group Policy Results to verify that my GPO is the winning GPO giving the user the permission to start/stop the two services. However, the user is still unable to start/stop the services. I attempted different loopback settings on the GPO to no avail. I'm sort of at a loss here.

• Some thoughts on email hosting for one’s own domain

  I have used the same email providers for my own domains for a few years now however I am considering moving over to a new provider. In this email I’ll share my current thoughts and hopefully I’ll get some feedback that might help me to decide on what to do next. What I use today I have three email addresses that I use primarily (I have changed the domains in this blog post as I don’t want to give them away to spammers): [email protected] – My personal account that I give out to family and friends and which I use to register on websites [email protected]  - An account that I use to catch email from the numerous mailing lists that I am on [email protected] – I am a self-employed consultant so this is an account that I hand out to my clients, my accountant, and other work-related organisations Those two domains (jtpersonaldomain.com & jtworkdomain.com) are both managed at http://domains.live.com which is a fantastic service provided by Microsoft that for some perplexing reason they never bother telling anyone about. It offers multiple accounts (I have seven at jtpersonaldomain.com though as already stated I only use two of them) which are accessed via Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail.com) along with usage reporting plus a few other odds and sods that I never use. Best of all though, its totally free. In addition, given that I have got both domains hosted using http://domains.live.com I can link my various accounts together and switch between them at Outlook.com without having to login and logout: N.B. You’ll notice that there are two other accounts listed there in addition to the three I already mentioned. One is my mum’s account which helps me provide IT support/spam filtering services to her and the other is the donation account for AdventureWorks on Azure. I find that linking feature to be very handy indeed. Finally, http://domains.live.com is the epitome of “it just works”. I set up jtworkdomain.com at http://domains.live.com over three years ago and I am pretty certain I haven’t been back there even once to administer it. Proposed changes OK, so if I like http://domains.live.com so much why am I considering changing? Well, I earn my corn in the Microsoft ecosystem and if I’m reading the tea-leaves correctly its looking increasingly likely that the services that I’m going to have to be familiar with in the future are all going to be running on top of and alongside Windows Azure Active Directory and Office 365 respectively. Its clear to me that Microsoft’s are pushing their customers toward cloud services and, like it or lump it, data integration developers like me may have to come along for the ride. I don’t think the day is too far off when we can log into Windows Azure SQL Database (aka SQL Azure), Team Foundation Service, Dynamics etc… using the same credentials that are currently used for Office 365 and over time I would expect those things to get integrated together a lot better – that integration will be based upon a Windows Azure Active Directory identity. This should not come as a surprise, in my opinion Microsoft’s whole enterprise play over the past 15 or 20 years can be neatly surmised as “get people onto Windows Server and Active Directory then upsell from there” – in the not-too-distant-future the only difference is that they’re trying to do it in the cloud. I want to get familiar with these services and hence I am considering moving jtworkdomain.com onto Office 365. I’ll lose the convenience of easily being able to switch to that account at Outlook.com and moreover I’ll have to start paying for it (I think it’ll be about fifty quid a year – not a massive amount but its quite a bit more than free) but increasingly this is beginning to look like a move I have to make. • Cloud Computing Pricing - It's like a Hotel

  I normally don't go into the economics or pricing side of Distributed Computing, but I've had a few friends that have been surprised by a bill lately and I wanted to quickly address at least one aspect of it. Most folks are used to buying software and owning it outright - like buying a car. We pay a lot for the car, and then we use it whenever we want. We think of the "cloud" services as a taxi - we'll just pay for the ride we take an no more. But it's not quite like that. It's actually more like a hotel. When you subscribe to Azure using a free offering like the MSDN subscription, you don't have to pay anything for the service. But when you create an instance of a Web or Compute Role, Storage, that sort of thing, you can think of the idea of checking into a hotel room. You get the key, you pay for the room. For Azure, using bandwidth, CPU and so on is billed just like it states in the Azure Portal. so in effect there is a cost for the service and then a cost to use it, like water or power or any other utility. Where this bit some folks is that they created an instance, played around with it, and then left it running. No one was using it, no one was on - so they thought they wouldn't be charged. But they were. It wasn't much, but it was a surprise.They had the hotel room key, but they weren't in the room, so to speak. To add to their frustration, they had to talk to someone on the phone to cancel the account. I understand the frustration. Although we have all this spelled out in the sign up area, not everyone has the time to read through all that. I get that. So why not make this easier? As an explanation, we bill for that time because the instance is still running, and we have to tie up resources to be available the second you want them, and that costs money. As far as being able to cancel from the portal, that's also something that needs to be clearer. You may not be aware that you can spin up instances using code - and so cancelling from the Portal would allow you to do the same thing. Since a mistake in code could erase all of your instances and the account, we make you call to make sure you're you and you really want to take it down. Not a perfect system by any means, but we'll evolve this as time goes on. For now, I wanted to make sure you're aware of what you should do. By the way, you don't have to cancel your whole account not to be billed. Just delete the instance from the portal and you won't be charged. You don't have to call anyone for that. And just FYI - you can download the SDK for Azure and never even hit the online version at all for learning and playing around. No sign-up, no credit card, PO, nothing like that. In fact, that's how I demo Azure all the time. Everything runs right on your laptop in an emulated environment.

• How do I get folder size with Exchange Web Services 2010 Managed API?

  I'm attempting to use EWS 2010 Managed API to get the total size of a user's mailbox. I haven't found a web service method to get this data, so I figured I would try to calculate it. I found one seemingly-applicable question on another site about finding mailbox sizes with EWS 2007, but either I'm not understanding what it's asking me to do, or that method just doesn't work with EWS 2010. Noodling around in the code insight, I was able to write what I thought was a method that would traverse the folder structure recursively and result in a combined total for all folders inside the Inbox: private int traverseChildFoldersForSize(Folder f) { int folderSizeSum = 0; if (f.ChildFolderCount > 0) { foreach (Folder c in f.FindFolders(new FolderView(10000))) { folderSizeSum += traverseChildFoldersForSize(c); } } folderSizeSum += (int)f.ManagedFolderInformation.FolderSize; return folderSizeSum; } (Assumes there aren't more than 10,000 folders inside a given folder. Figure that's a safe bet...) Unfortunately, this doesn't work. I'm initiating the recursion with this code: Folder root = Folder.Bind(svc, WellKnownFolderName.Inbox); int totalSize = traverseChildFoldersForSize(root); But a Null Pointer Exception is thrown, essentially saying that [folder].ManagedFolderInformation is a null object reference. For clarity, I also attempted to just get the size of the root folder: Console.Write(root.ManagedFolderInformation.FolderSize.ToString()); Which threw the same NPE exception, so I know that it's not just that once you get to a certain depth in the directory tree that ManagedFolderInformation doesn't exist. Any ideas on how to get the total size of the user's mailbox? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

• How can I stop SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 going to sleep?

  I have SSRS 2008 set-up on a server. All works fine except that if left inactive for a length of time the next time a request is made to the server it takes a long time for it to service it. I think this is to do with the worker process being shutdown after being idle for a certain length of time. However, as SSRS 2008 isn't managed through IIS I can't find any settings that I can adjust to stop this from happening. In IIS I'd go to the Performance tab of the Application Pool Properties and choose not to shutdown the worker process. How can I do this for SSRS 2008?

• Adding delegate with calendar access using Exchange Web Services?

  I have a set up where I need to add a delegate to various user calendars programmatically. Using a sample from MDSN, I've gotten as far as trying to add the delegate, but after the call to the service binding, I get nothing back...no success or fail....nothing. • Does anybody actually use FaultReasonText to localize faults from WCF services?

  There is a localization mechanism in WCF that enables one to localize faults returned to client, via a FaultReasonText object that's a part of the fault. The way this is done is that you pass all possible translations of the fault's message inside a collection in the FaultReasonText. This, I understand, is based on SOAP v1.2. Does anyone actually use this mechanism? Isn't this wasteful in terms of bandwidth? Why would you send all possible translations to a client that is (probably) only interested in a specific language?

• The server rejected the session-establishment request: WCF hosted on IIS

  Background: I'm working on a project where we have about a dozen distinct WCF services implemented in an IIS application, communicating over net.tcp on the default port (808), using the Microsoft Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service. I recently added a self-test method to the base class of each of these services so that I could remotely hit the service and get back a status string verifying that it was in operation. We implement this app in a ladder of environments - Development, QA, UAT, and finally production. My problem: My test program, which instantiates a connection to each service in turn and invokes the self-test method, works fine on all the environments below production. We recently moved the app to production, and I'm getting a weird error that I can't explain: On the first of the services that I hit, I get back an exception: "The server at [URL] rejected the session-establishment request". All the other services respond fine. I initially thought there was something wrong with the particular service that was failing, but I tried rearranging the list of services into a different order, and it SEEMS to always be the first service that I hit that fails. (I say SEEMS because it think once in the early iterations of testing, I saw it happen on the second service that it hit. But I haven't been able to reproduce that.) I've looked at application startup delays, and that doesn't seem to be the problem, because I can come back and run the test again as soon as it finishes - a delay of only a minute or two - and get the same error. Also, in the lower level environments, there is a start up delay of probably 30 seconds to a minute, but the result still comes back as expected. I've tried accessing the services over http from INetManager, and I get intermittent failures on all the services - a particular service will return a yellow screen of death on on invocation, then come up with the expected link to the WSDL on the next one seconds later. I'm completely at a loss to explain this behavior, or how to resolve it. I've googled the error message, and not found anything helpful. It may be a configuration issue - the production servers are newly provisioned VM's, and we may not have the config exactly right (whereas all the lower level environments have been running this and other similar apps for some time), but I have not idea what to look for. I've looked at the properties of the app pool that the app is running on and compared it to the lower level environments without finding any differences. If somebody can point me in the right direction, you would have my undying gratitude.

• Visual Studio 2008 Add-in: App.config and web services.

  I have created a visual studio add-in for VS2008. The add-in uses as web service to access data required by the developer. However, currently the only way to get the service to work is to add the service bindings to the machine.config of the pc. I know this is a bad idea and its causing errors left and right in my other applications. I have tried using app.config along side my add-in but the add-in doesn't seem to use it at all. My service call is being made from a dll referenced by the add-in would that make a difference?

• A declarative workflow does not start automatically after you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.

  That's the title of kb947284 actually. Recently I was involved in a Sharepoint project. I run into this problem where my workflow does not start automatically. If I run the workflow manually, it's just fine. I found kb947284. Apparently the cause of this problem is the installation of WSS 3 SP1. I did what it said in the Resolution section but it didn't work. The Resolution said to set the application pool account to use a different user account. What kind of different does it mean? What kind of user account will work? I changed the user account but both old and new account is in the same group of administrator for the server where SP is installed. Oh! I also found a copy of kb947284 and one comments stated there is already a hotfix (kb956057). I've read the issues that are fixed but could not find anywhere about this workflow problem. Could anyone please tell me how it's supposed to be done? Thanks in advance.

• How can you centre an image within the image control in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008?

  I have got an image in an image control on a report in SSRS 2008. The image is coming from an external source, and varies in width. I would like to centre the image within the control, but the image control does not have an equivalent of the text box's TextAlign property to allow right/left/center alignment to be done automatically. I have seen methods to dynamically calculate the amount of left padding as a hack to solve this, http://blogs.msdn.com/chrishays/archive/2004/10/27/CenteredImages.aspx, but the solution gives an error in SSRS 2008, perhaps not surprising given the age of the article. Has anybody got a solution to this for SSRS 2008?

  I am trying to create a tool that I can upload different types of files "csv", Excel, XML and load those files into a FileStream column in the database as "Source" untouched over the web. Then using SSIS on the server I want to create a package that will process that file to be loaded into other tables to be used by the web application. Is it possible to have SSIS read a file from FileStream column? if so how?
