• Subtext 2.5 is released!

  After more then one year since last release, we are happy to announce that the new version of Subtext, number 2.5, has just been released. The main features are the new dashboard, featuring the Ayendes formula for blog post popularity, and a improved site-wide search based on Lucene.net.   One of the most common suggestions we’ve heard since launch is that we should produce a more expensive “Model C” version of Raspberry Pi with extra RAM. This would be useful for people who want to use the Pi as a general-purpose computer, with multiple large applications running concurrently, and would enable some interesting embedded use cases (particularly using Java) which are slightly too heavyweight to fit comfortably in 256MB.The downside of this suggestion for us is that we’re very attached to $35 as our highest price point. • What to use for "localhost" that includes PHP/SQL functionality?

  I really do not want to install Linux at the moment, I would have to borrow a USB key, move files, format it, flash it, format it again, move files back, give it back... What would you recommend that is lightweight, easily and cleanly uninstallable afterwards (will install Linux when I get a new DVD-ROM, which will be in ~2 weeks), that also supports PHP and SQL? To be precise, I want to install a Wordpress blog, a few plugins, etc, and develop a theme. If there is no such thing for Windows (7, x64 if that matters), let me know too, I will borrow the USB key then (even though it's a pain).

• Testing controller logic that uses ISession directly

  I have just read this blog post from Jimmy Bogard and was drawn to this comment. Where this falls down is when a component doesn’t support a given layering/architecture. But even with NHibernate, I just use the ISession directly in the controller action these days. Why make things complicated? I then commented on the post and ask this question:- My question here is what options would you have testing the controller logic IF you do not mock out the NHibernate ISession. I am curious what options we have if we utilise the ISession directly on the controller?

• Convert Currencies Dynamically using PHP, Google and cURL [closed]

  I want to be able to allow users to dynamically change the currency of the products prices in my webstore, right there on the page. For example, 300 USD will change to 221.61 EUR when the user selects Euros from a dropdown.   Quick shoutout for the Fusion Applications (Cloud Applications to you) Developer Relations blog post about translating Fusion apps customizations using composers and other tools and utilities provided by Oracle. Great to see Fusion help customizations included in the post, as well as software, and it also includes a nice heads up on what's coming to enable customers to make changes to text themselves in Release 8 of Oracle's Cloud Applications. I am proud to say that I logged the enhancements for what's coming in Release 8  to come to life and also wrote a spec for its requirements based on the customer research done internationally through the Oracle Usability Advisory Board). Remember,  copywriting is design and translated versions means reflecting local UX requirements too! Nice post guys!

• Fiddler - A useful free tool for checking Web Services (and web site) traffic

  Recently I had reason to be very glad that I had Fiddler. I was able to record some web service traffic and identify a problem as Fiddler can record both the call to a web service and response from the web service. By seeing the actual data traffic I was able to resolve a problem found in testing in less time than it has taken me to write this blog entry! This tool is also useful for studying general web site traffic. Fiddler is available from http://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler2/ There are training videos available on the above site.

• What's an acceptable "Avg. Page Load Time"?

  Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

  There is a news website / blog - I'll call it the Site from now on. The site mention a keyword in one of its articles. I add a Google Alerts for the keyword, but I do not get any alert for the word from The Site. Furthermore, searching the keyword in the news section don't getting any results from The Site. The Site has a sitemap, that indexed by Google every x minutes. And in the main search, searching for a news title bring the item on the top. What are the best ways to get included in Google Alerts mails?

• Should I submit my RSS feed as Google Sitemap?

  I currently have no sitemap for a website I'm creating. I do have an RSS feed which includes the N latest updated posts on the site. It doesn't include everything on the site though, just blog posts. Creating a full sitemap would be a bit of a hassle I think. Should I submit the feed instead? Is there a difference between using a regular sitemap and a feed? Is it important to have a sitemap? What happens when you do/don't?

• Places to find free software projects who need developers/project managers?

  While I have plenty of project management "booksmarts" and a handful of PM experience, I don't seem to have enough experience to get the sort of job I want. Since "I read another PM book/blog today" doesn't really count, I was thinking I could find some free/open source software (FOSS) projects who are looking for/hiring project managers or developers and see if there was anything I could volunteer for. Does anyone know of any FOSS employment sites where I might be able to find such projects? Something similar to careers.stackoverflow.com. I know I could just go to sourceforge/freshmeat and look around, but I was hoping to find some site that fills this need (and if any such sites exist, my google-fu is apparently VERY weak at finding them).
