• Getting Started on Isometric Board Game port

  I have developed a (off-line) board game that I would like to translate to an online/social game in an isometric grid perspective. My background is in .NET web development, so I'm very comfortable with C#, HTML, jQuery/javascript. Still getting my feet wet with HTML5. I have familiarity with Flash, but I haven't worked with it in years. I'm also interested in working with Azure for hosting the back-end. Ultimately I'd like this game to have persistent leaderboard/achievements and therefore be able to log in through FB and Kong and the like. Obviously, I'm not looking for 'here's exactly how to do all of this'. But I would love some opinions on where to start, particularly given my background and goals. Would be happy to share more details if it makes answering easier! Thanks!

• HTML 5, Fluid Pages and Google Mobile Index

  I am currently migrating my site to HTML5, at the same time designing pages so that they are "fluid" and are equally presentable for a mobile or a large screen. I took the fluid approach so as not to have to develop a separate application for mobile devices and I'm pleasantly surprised with the results that look equally as good on an iPhone as they do on a large screen. Then I went into the Google Webmaster Tools facility and became aware of the Google Mobile Index. I'm confused now as HTML5 doesn't seem to be supported by Google Mobile Indexing. Does this mean that when I go live with my new "pride and joy" HTML5 site on a mobile it won't appear on any Google searches as it's not in the Google Mobile Index?

• What approaches can I take to lower the odds of introducing new bugs in a complex legacy app?

  Where I work I often have to develop (and bug fix) in an old system (.NET 1) whos code is complete spaghetti - with little thought given to variable names, program structure nor comments. Because of this it takes me ages to understand what bits need changed, and I often 'break' the existing software because I've made a modification. I really really want to spend a couple of months (with colleagues) going through it to refactor but existing developers both can't see the need - nor think theres time for this (the system is massive). I dread having to work on its code as it takes days to fix something only to find out I've broken something else. This obviously makes me look incompetent - so how can I deal with this?

• Large resolution differences

  I want to develop a game on multiple devices such as PC, Android or IOS. Want it to be in 1080p, but that means a massive scale down for the smartphones. I know how to do that, just render everything on a 1080p rendertarget and then render it on the screen smaller. But what should I do so that the scalling down doesn't look bad and blury? I can't do it vector based or anything because the sprites simply need a specific size. Should I make the sprites power of two size to get some nice mipmapping? And which other settings can I do? Or should I rather go with a lower resolution but then having a little bit worse look PC version? The performance seems not to be a problem for me, so would be sad not using 1080p because of other problems.

  Hello!.As you may notice :), this is my first post on geekswithblogs.com . I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them. The code will either be explained on its entirety or will be posted on a link that has an explained working sample for you guys to test and learn from.My posts will be in English, and I am an intermediate English speaker/writer so bare with me if it's not perfect sometimes, I am always learning something new though.I hope this get to be a useful resource for anyone interested. • Learning Programming, Suggestions for a roadmap

  Hi, Some background first- I am new to programming and have discovered it rather late in life; Like many hobbyists, my introduction to the subject has been through php/jquery (yes, i know the popular mood around here... they-are-not-real-programminng-languages ;-) ). I like to believe that I am reasonably competent at what I do in my other life and this developing addiction to coding has taken a very heavy toll on my professional prospects. This is the question: What programming languages next? (No plans to ditch php in the immediate future, that will involve rewriting much of my code) Any absolutely essential books I must read? Is it necessary to join a college/university course? Do I need to ditch my other profession to continue serious learning? • Where can I find a good Hibernate Criteria tutorial that doesn't use cats and kittens? [closed]

  I've been using Hibernate a little while (HQL) and want to try Criteria's for a few scenarios we have here. I'm trying to get a few inner joins (2 layers deep) and am struggling a little. I go to the official site and they teach by cats and kittens. I don't care about cats and kittens and find the analogy hard to follow. Orders, details, shipments, etc. Nice, boring business references is what I enjoy. I tried to Google it but all I get are early 2000's websites with so many flashing GIF's, cluttered displays, flash overs and "tummy tuck" ads I want to puke. Why can't the java world have sites like http://guides.rubyonrails.org/? And no, I'm not advocating I volunteer to create a similar site. :-) Anyway, any good site that can give a nice tutorial on Criteria based searches would be appreciated.

What are some tips for gaining as much knowledge from them? I don't want to take up too much of their time, but also want to take full advantage of this since it really could help develop my skills. • How necessary is it to learn JavaScript before jQuery?

  In my opinion, when I looked at JavaScript, it looked like not my cup of tea. When I came across jQuery, I loved it. I sat and watched Nettuts+ 15 days of jQuery screencasts, 1 year later and now I'm fairly confident I wouldn't develop a website without including jQuery's library. I have never felt this has held me back but my question is, will this come back and bite me in the ass one day, the fact that I didn't have a solid JavaScript foundation before jumping feet first into one of its best (if not the best) frameworks? Did anyone else take this approach?

• Right tool for the job(html5 vs silverlight)

  I have been tasked to develop a web based offer request application for bathrooms and I am asking opinions on which tool should I choose. I have narrowed options down to two (html5 and silverlight). Most of the application consists of basic UI elements that could be achieved with html4. However most challenging part is the design view for the bathroom. User first defines size of the bathroom by giving dimensions. When the dimensions are defined the application renders an empty bathroom floorplan and user can start dragging&dropping furniture on to it. Some furniture have rules where they can be dragged. For example sinks can only be dragged next to a wall. I know that this functionality can be achieved with silverlight but what about html5 ? I know that Canvas element can be used to draw graphics, but can it render the bathroom smoothly as user drags a piece furniture on it?

I don't remember what it was called, or who was in it... all I remember is that, in one scene, the venerable sensei tells the hero: "You must develop your nunchaku technique." This became a bit fo a catchphrase amongst my high school mates. Well folks, I am developing my technuique. This blog has been renamed and the old posts removed--I could go into my reasons for this, but that would defeat the point of the exercise. Sorry if you liked 'em. It has been a good couple of years since I wrote anything here, so I doubt that I am putting out any regular readers. Will I be posting here more often, now that I've renamed and rethemed the place?   I want to develop a simple app for the Windows Phone 7 platform. It's basically a vocabulary based game that involves the user moving word tiles from one area to another to score points. I want to know what is the best way of tying the UI to the game's backend? I saw the Windows Phone 7 jumpstart videos, there they touch up on Data Binding but don't really go into any depth. • Why won't my install on Macbook work?

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Macbook. The CD drive is broken, so I am going from a USB flash drive I created. I can get it to "Try Ubuntu" perfectly fine, as a matter of fact I'm using it right now. However, I really want to install. Everything is partitioned, rEFIt is installed. I run the installer and I follow the guide at Apple Intel Installation I get to the install part of the installer, and after running it ends with a fatal grub error. Anyone know how to get past this? I feel like it has something to do with the fact that I don't get the last dialog box of the installer with the "advanced" tab used in the guide. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• Where can I find "magic numbers" for classic game play mechanics?

  I'd like to find some "magic numbers" for the classic helicopter game. For example the numbers that determine how fast the helicopter accelerates up and down. Also perhaps the "randomness" of the obstacles (uniformly distributed? Gaussian?). Where can I find these numbers? p.s. I don't care about the particular platform... • Error accessing Gio.Gsettings on application made in quickly

  I am trying to develop an application using the quickly/pygtk stack. I got my Gsettings schemas all set up in ~/app-name-here/data/glib-2.0/schemas/net.launchpad.app-name-here.gschema.xml correctly and I am able to access it just fine in my preferences dialog window that is located in ~/app-name-here/app-name-here/PreferencesDialog.py via from gi.repository import Gtk, Gio settings = Gio.Settings("net.launchpad.app-name-here") settings.get_boolean('notify') settings.set_boolean('notify', True) but when I try to check the value of one of my settings in a file located in ~/app-name-here/bin/Daemon.py that I use as a script to run in the background and send notifications by a similar method of from gi.repository import Gio settings = Gio.Settings("net.launchpad.app-name-here") settings.get_boolean('notify') it fails at the line that says settings = Gio.Settings("net.launchpad.app-name-here") and spits out a nasty error (Daemon.py:26100): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'net.launchpad.app-name-here' is not installed Despite the fact that I can open up dconf-editor and find the settings under net/launchpad/app-name-here. Any thoughts?

For example I scoured through the official tutorial and documentation of Python and I was good to go.I could write useful applications. Is there any equivalent for Ubuntu or unity? I tried downloading the alpha 2,put kept crashing every 5 minute. I was told in IRC,it was due to some Xorg stack change. Now I cant even look at new Unity,let alone help develop it.
