• What's an easy way to set up object communication in Obj-C?

  I am trying to send a slider value from a controller object to a method of a model object. The later is implemented in the separate file and I have appropriate headers. I think the problem is that I am not sure how to instantiate the receiver in order to produce a working method for the controller. Here is the controller's method. -(IBAction)setValue:(id)slider {[Model setValue:[slider floatValue]];} @implementation Model -(void)setValue:(float)n{ printf("%f",n); } @end What I get is 'Model' may not respond to '+setValue' warning and no output in my console.   I am attempting to write a Genetic Algorithm based on techniques I had picked up from the book "AI Techniques for Game Programmers" that uses a binary encoding and fitness proportionate selection (also known as roulette wheel selection) on the genes of the population that are randomly generated within the program in a two-dimensional array. I recently came across a piece of pseudocode and have tried to implement it, but have come across some problems with the specifics of what I need to be doing. I've checked a number of books and some open-source code and am still struggling to progress. I understand that I have to get the sum of the total fitness of the population, pick a random number between the sum and zero, then if the number is greater than the parents to overwrite it, but I am struggling with the implementation of these ideas. Any help in the implementation of these ideas would be very much appreciated as my Java is rusty.

• Create a color generator in matplotlib

  I have a series of lines that each need to be plotted with a separate colour. Each line is actually made up of several data sets (positive, negative regions etc.) and so I'd like to be able to create a generator that will feed one colour at a time across a spectrum, for example the gist_rainbow map shown here. Maybe a generator is not the best way to do this, if so what is the accepted way?

I would like to have them progressive loaded form my website using HTML5 video tag. video_big.mp4 encoded for iOS on Wifi H.264 Baseline, 25fps, 640x480, 500kbps video_small.mp4 encoded for iOS on Edge/3G H.264 Baseline, 25fps, 320x240, 56kbps My question is: How can I write the HTML5 video tag to serve video_big.mp4 to iOS devices that connected through Wifi, and serve video_small.mp4 to iOS devices that connected through Edge/3G? • IIS 7 - floats returning with commas instead of periods

  I'm having trouble reading rows with float values, because these rows return for example 12,34 instead of 12.34 as it should. I suspect this is because both my IIS and SQL server is on a Norwegian Windows Server 2008. So I went to the regional settings and customized the default decimal symbol, then restarted my servers. The output in the database now shows the period decimal symbol, but when I request it through the IIS server it comes comma separated (the IIS server is on another computer, but that also has the default decimal symbol set to period). The IIS server is IIS7 and the SQL Server is 2008 Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Javascript: Link with Chinese characters in Internet Explorer

  I have a problem with a link containing Chinese characters that is send to a javascript file in Internet Explorer. Generally that link is created by PHP and looks like this in IE: www.example.com/%E6%B7%AC%E7%81%AB%E6%B2%B9_ASIN5034CN.pdf In firefox it looks like this: www.example.com/???_ASIN5034CN.pdf Both work in that direct way. I need to pass that link to a javascript that popups on the page and it will be displayed after the user entered her/his contact information. This also works on firefox and other browsers but in IE that link is transfered to this which does not work anymore: www.example.com/æ·¬ç«æ²¹_ASIN5034CN.pdf I tried to do some encoding on it with encodeURIComponent but still no success. So the link is passed correctly to the javascript but it is totally screwed up only by IE. Thx for any advice on that problem.

• What are the lesser known but cool data structures ?

  There a some data structures around that are really cool but are unknown to most programmers. Which are they? Everybody knows linked lists, binary trees, and hashes, but what about Skip lists, Bloom filters for example. I would like to know more data structures that are not so common, but are worth knowing because they rely on great ideas and enrich a programmer's tool box. PS: I am also interested on techniques like Dancing links which make interesting use of the properties of a common data structure. EDIT: Please try to include links to pages describing the data structures in more detail. Also, try to add a couple of words on why a data structures is cool (as Jonas Kölker already pointed out). Also, try to provide one data-structure per answer. This will allow the better data structures to float to the top based on their votes alone.

  Hi guys, I have to load some url with cyrillic symbols. How to decode correctly this url? When I'm using that url directly in code, like address = 'that address', it works perfect. But I used parsing page for getting this url. I have a list of urls which contents cyrillic. Maybe they have uncorrect encoding? • HTML/CSS Div placing

  Yo. There's a tendency in placing divs to follow each other vertically, but what i'm trying to accomplish right now is to is basically to place a number of divs (two) inside a parent div like so: <div id='parent'><div id='onediv'></div> <div id='anotherone'></div> </div> And i'd like to place 'anotherone' just to the right of 'onediv'. Sadly, float:right is pretty much ruining the layout with the divs popping out of their parent divs and whatnot. Any suggestions are welcome. Edit: It might be worth noting that the parent div and 'anotherone' has no height elements at all, with 'onediv' planned to be thought as the "height support" div, allowing the contents of 'anotherone' to make the parent div larger at will.

• SimpleXML adding html into Hash tree

  Question: I have an xml file that I am pulling from the web and parsing. One of the items in the xml is a 'content' value that has HTML. I am using SimpleXML/XMLin to parse the file like so: $xml= eval { $data-XMLin($xmldata, forcearray = 1, suppressempty= +'') }; When I use Dumper to dump the hash, I dsicovered that SimpleXML is parsing the HTML into the hash tree. 'content' => { 'div' => [ { 'xmlns' => 'http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml', 'p' => [ { 'a' => [ { 'href' => 'http://miamiherald.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b26169e20133ec6f4491970b-pi', 'style' => 'FLOAT: left', 'img' => [ etc..... This is not what I want. I want to just grab content inside of this entry. How do I do this?

• JTextPane insert component, faulty vertical alignment

  I have a JTextPane, into which I need to insert a JComponent. I'm using JTextPane.insertComponent(Component). The item is indeed inserted, but the vertical positioning is too high. Instead of having the bottom of the component aligned with the baseline of the current line of text, the component is way above that position, blocking out/over-painting lines of text appearing above. I have tried calling setAlignmentY(float) with various values, on both the inserted component and the JTextPane, but it doesn't affect the behavior at all. My guess: there seems to be some state inside my JTextPane or its Document that I need to be changing. But I don't know what it is. John

• XML over HTTP with JMS and Spring

  I have a legacy HTTP server where I need to send an XML file over HTTP request (POST) using Java (not browser) and the server will respond with another XML in its HTTP response. It is similar to Web Service but there's no WSDL and I have to follow the existing XML structure to construct my XML to be sent. I have done a research and found an example that matches my requirement here. The example uses HttpClient from Apache Commons. (There are also other examples I found but they use java.net networking package (like URLConnection) which is tedious so I don't want to use them). But it's also my requirement to use Spring and JMS. I know from Spring's reference that it's possible to combine HttpClient, JMS and Spring. My question is, how? Note that it's NOT in my requirement to use HttpClient. If you have a better suggestion, I'm welcome. Appreciate it.   Hi, I would like to do something like this in my application layout: %title= "#{yield(:sub_title)} - Page Name" and in a real view - content_for :sub_title do Übersicht # I tried &Uuml;bersicht, != "&Uuml;bersicht" and a bunch of other methods what happens is, I either get the black pound with the question mark in it - wrong encoding or the raw string (&UumI;bersicht). Does anyone know a way how to get this to work? Another requirement is that I'd like to show user generated content in the title and this content may or may not have umlauts in it. Used versions: Haml 3.0.11, Rails 3 beta4 and currently for development JRuby 1.5

• Should you correct compiler warnings about type conversions using explicit typecasts?

  In my current project, the compiler shows hundreds of warnings about type conversions. There is a lot of code like this iVar = fVar1*fVar2/fVar3; // or even iVar = fVar1*fVar2/fVar3+.5f; which intentionally assign float values to int. Of course, I could fix these warnings using iVar = int(...); but that looks kind of ugly. Would you rather live with the ugliness or live with the warnings? Or is there even a clean solution?

• Replace a word in an XML file through StreamReader in XNA?

  Okay, so this is sort of a hack...but it may have to be. I'm writing an app in XNA, which from my research into this problem apparently doesn't support XML version 1.1. I'm reading in the contents of an ePub document, and one of the newer books contains its content directory as a version 1.1 XML document. This causes my program to crash. However, the structure is the same as the rest, the only thing that should be keeping it from working is the hard-coded "1.0" in the XmlDocument class. Is it possible that I could read in the file from the stream, see if it contains: <?xml version="1.1" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?> and simply replace it with "1.0"? Then I could pull it in as an XmlDocument. I'm not doing any writing to the file, or any complex structural reading, just looking for a few specific nodes, and pulling in the values, so I don't know what the ramifications of this would be.

  I have a problem where depending on the result of a random coin flip, I have to sample a random starting position from a string. If the sampling of this random position is uniform over the string, I thought of two approaches to do it: one using multinomial from numpy.random, the other using the simple randint function of Python standard lib.
