  Hi, I installed monit on my server and tried to monitor nginx. check process nginx with pidfile /var/run/nginx.pid start program = "/etc/init.d/nginx start" stop program = "/etc/init.d/nginx stop" group server And I get Process 'nginx' status Changed monitoring status monitored data collected Wed Mar 24 00:37:49 2010 What does "Changed" mean? • Best way to daemonize Java application on Linux

  Hi. While I found this question being answered here on SW several times, I didn't find a concluding answer what is the best approach. I'm not looking to use any external wrapper, as I found them launching the java process under a nice level lower then themselves which potentially lowers the performance, so it seems only the shell methods are left. I so far found 3 different shell methods: start-stop-daemon RedHat daemon init.d function nohup on start / disown after start What you people are using, and can recommend as the most reliable method?   I'm a literature student and I'd like to be able to annotate literary texts (originally stored in HTML or as text files) on a word-by-word or line-by-line basis. I hear databases like mySQL or SQLite would be good ways to do this sort of thing, but I don't really know where to start. I'm comfortable with the linux command-line, and have done some HTML/CSS work in the past, so I feel unintimidated by databases and things...I just don't know what to start doing.

• Launch x64 Windows application in C# while the project is set to x86

  Hi all I'm trying to launch the osk.exe and I keep getting "Could not start osk" message. The problem is that my project is set to x86 (i'm using a ms access database). If I switch to x64 or Any CPU everything works fine but the database will no longer work. I tried this using System.Diagnostics; private void btnOSK_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Process.Start("osk.exe"); Process.Start(@"C:\windows\system32\osk.exe"); } I also tried to run SysWOWW\osk but this also didn't work. Besides my application should run on both x86 and x64 machines. Is there any way to bypass this? It's really frustrating.

• Unable to share internet by using HOSTEDNETWORK after installing AVAST recently

  I was able to share my laptop's internet with my smartphone by using this command "netsh wlan start hostednetwork". But when I installed Avast in my Windows 8 OS, I am able to start the hostednetwork as before and my smartphone also finds the virtual AP but still I can't use internet on the smartphone. It's like the internet sharing has been disabled by the Antivirus. How do I tell Avast that its okay to use the hostednetwork?

• Configure startup order of websphere application withing EAR

  Is it possible to define startup order of the WebSphere enterprise application within EAR (some of descriptor/binding files, META-INF or anywhere else)? The procedure described in IBM InfoCenter requires using AdminConsole, but I would prefer to set fixed order in the EAR to assert that our 2 EAR's will start in fixed order (one is requiring the other to start before). Unfortunatelly, I haven't found in Internet any way for setting startup order other then AdminConsole/wsadmin. I don't want to go into AdminConsole each time I redeploy the EAR.

  Hello there, so here is my problem: I have several different configuarion servers. I have different calculations (jobs); I can predict how long approximately each job will take to be caclulated. Also, I have priorities. My question is how to keep all machines loaded 99-100% and schedule the jobs in the best way. Each machine can do several calculations at a time. Jobs are pushed to the machine. The central machine knows the current load of each machine. Also, I would like to to assign some kind of machine learning here, because I will know statistics of each job (started, finished, cpu load etc.). How can I distribute jobs (calculations) in the best possible way, keeping in mind the priorities? Any suggestions, ideas, or algorithms ? FYI: My platform .NET.

• unable to retract Sharepoint solutions

  Hi all: I am having trouble retracting solutions in SharePoint 2007. I used both the retract solution button and the stsadm command in command line. The timer job was created in both instances, but it never gets run... it just sits in the timer job definition. The Status of the target just said "Retracting (scheduled at m/dd/yyyy MM:SS AM/PM)". I've waited for a long time and nothing happens. Has anyone experienced this before, and does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

  some week in the future i will have job to create php web app that will work as billing process. As the client and my team agree upon, the web app will only deploy in their internal server. This need arose some fundamental questions for myself. how do we lock the web app really really will work only in internal server and not in internet as it asked ? cause this need, the cost for the job have been cut into some degree. so it will be best if it only work as client describe it : it will be deploy in intranet an intranet only What is the pro and cons deploy php application only (with all of its apache server )in intranet ? What is the fundamental different between deploying php app in intranet environment and in internet ? is there anything to be consider ? I know we can put windows in to a flash-disk or pen-disk. i there any autorun apache/php server that work in the same fashion ?

  This is something I've always been curious about, is exactly why Google appends while(1); in front of their (private) JSON responses. For example, here's a response while turning a calendar on and off in Google Calendar: while(1);[['u',[['smsSentFlag','false'],['hideInvitations','false'],['remindOnRespondedEventsOnly','true'],['hideInvitations_remindOnRespondedEventsOnly','false_true'],['Calendar ID stripped for privacy','false'],['smsVerifiedFlag','true']]]] I would assume this is to prevent people from doing an eval() on it, but all you'd really have to do is replace the while and then you'd be set. I would assume eval prevention is to make sure people write safe JSON parsing code. I've seen this used in a couple other places, too, but a lot more so with Google (Mail, Calendar, Contacts, etc.) Strangely enough, Google Docs starts with &&&START&&& instead, and Google Contacts seems to start with while(1); &&&START&&&. Does anyone know what's going on here?

  I'm working on a sports website and need to convert the server's match start time to local match start time. After much googling, I figured the fastest and most accurate way is to get the GMT offset value in JavaScript. The trouble is, I can't pass the GMT offset value to PHP. I've tried using both the PHP session and cookie variables, but both are always empty. The website doesn't require a user account, so there isn't any stored GMT value in the database. I'm trying to auto-detect each user's local timezone every time he/she visits the website, and then calculate the local match start time based on the timezone offset. Can someone please advise me? • Widget starting a service also starts main activity

  Hi, I have a widget that is supposed to start and stop a service (start it when it's not running, stop it when it is). This is working fine, however, each time the service is started, my app's main activity is also launched, which I don't want. If I remove the MAIN-intent-filter ( <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />) from the app's manifest, it works as I want it to (without launching the main-activity, just the service), but then I obviously don't have a main activity anymore... This is how I start the service (I would assume this is the normal way, and I can't see any reference to what might cause the MAIN intent to fire): Intent svc = new Intent(this, OnOffService.class); startService(svc); Thanks, Nick

  I've never really used threading before in C# where I need to have two threads, as well as the main UI thread. Thread t1 = new Thread(new ThreadStart(action1)); t1.Start(); //Now, I want for the main thread (which is calling StartTheActions() ) to wait for t1 to finish (I have created an event in action1() for this) and then start t2... //HOW DO I DO THIS? • Can learning a new language (Human not programming) help your career?

  I was wondering if anyone had any experience of learning a new language (a human language not a programming one) and whether is has helped you get ahead in your career. I'm assuming that the new language is one other than English which I think is fairly essential to programming as most programming resources seem to be english. The reason I ask is I speak Arabic and was told that it would give me an edge when I was looking for jobs, and yet so far in my current job it's completely irrelevant and in my last job I had it was used but I didn't get any special "appreciation" for speaking it.

• Which programming language is easiest to get a junior position in?

  I do not have a CS degree but I have lots of intermediate experience with many languages (PHP, C#, Objective-C, Java, VBScript, Actionscript, Javascript, Ruby, etc), mostly freelance or pastime. I have a little experience with Linux (Ubuntu), and a decent bit with Windows. When I look at different languages I find that am interested in most (except maybe VB), but I am not sure what to focus on. So what would be the easiest language to get a job in? Java? PHP? Or would it be easier to get a job as a Junior DBA if I learned Oracle or SQL Server in my spare time?

  I have been working on a query that will return a suggested start date for a manufacturing line based on due date and the number of minutes needed to complete the task. There is a calendar table(LINE_ID, CALENDAR_DATE, SCHEDULED_MINUTES) that displays per manufacturing line, the number of minutes scheduled for that day. Example: (Usually 3 shifts worth of time scheduled per day, no weekends but can vary) 1, 06/8/2010 00:00:00.000, 1440 1, 06/7/2010 00:00:00.000, 1440 1, 06/6/2010 00:00:00.000, 0 1, 06/5/2010 00:00:00.000, 0 1, 06/4/2010 00:00:00.000, 1440 In order to get the suggested start date, I need to start with the due date and iterate downward through the days until i have accumulated enough time to complete the task. My Question can something like this be done with CTE, or is this something that should be handled by a cursor. Or... am i just going about this the wrong way completely??

• Debugging ASP.NET with IIS

  I've set up debugging in Visual Studio 2008 to IIS instead of the built in server so I can run url rewriting while developing (using IIRF). It took a while to get to work (changing permissions, reinstalling the .NET framework) but it was working. I turned off my machine, and now that it's back on the debugger won't start. I'm using Parallels with WinXP on an iMac. "Unable to start debugging on the web server. Could not start ASP.NET debugging. More information may be available by starting the project without debugging" I read a whole bunch of posts on SO as well as googled the subject but none seem to provide a working answer. Has anyone encountered this and knows how to get it to work? Thanks.

• How to double the size of 8x8 Grid whilst keeping the relative position of certain tiles intact?

  Hi guys I have grid size of size 8x8 , total of 64 Tiles. i'm using this Grid to implement java search algorithms such as BFS and DFS. The Grid has given forbidden Tiles (meaning they can't be traversed or be neighbour of any other tile) and Goal and Start tile. for example Tile 19,20,21,22 and 35, 39 are forbidden and 14 an 43 are the Goal and start node when the program runs. My question is , How can i double the size of the grid, to 16x16 whilst keeping the Relative position of forbidden tiles as well as the Relative position of start and goal Tiles intact? On paper i know i can do this by adding 4 rows and columns to all size but in coding terms i don't know how to make it work? Can someone please give any sort of hints?

If I log into guest account and search my name it shows an error that i don't have permission. When i log into my roommate's standard account and go to the start menu I put my name in search and everything I have done or searched is open to them . • Bring another processes Window to foreground when it has ShowInTaskbar = false

  We only want one instance of our app running at any one time. So on start up it looks to see if the app is running and if it is, it calls SetForegroundWindow on the Main Window. This is all good and well ... for the most part.. When our app starts up it will show a Splash screen and a Logon form. Both of these forms have ShowInTaskBar = false. Because of this, if you try to start up another copy of the app when the Logon form is showing, that Logon form is not brought to the front! Especially as the user cant see anything in the taskbar as well, all they figure is that the app is duff and cannot start. There is no indication that there is another instance running. Is there any way around this problem?

• Hosting an NServiceBus subscriber in the same application as the producer.

  Is it possible to use NServiceBus to publish and consume messages in the same application, specifically a web application? In the future we will almost certainly need to maintain a separate long running service to process messages generated by this application, and this is why we are hoping to use NServiceBus from the start, but right now it would be nice to just start up the consumer and the publisher when the web application starts. This will make testing and deployment far easier for us. I presume I will need to reference the NServiceBus.Host.exe and start up the process in the global.asax, but need help on what exactly I need to call to do this.
