Why isn't this infinite recursion? How does default variable initialization work in VB.NET?

I just made an interesting mistake in my code: Dim endColumn As Integer = startColumn + endColumn - 1 The code was actually supposed to be: Dim endColumn As Integer = startColumn + numColumns - 1 The interesting thing is, I would think that this code should be recursive and loop indefinitely, as the initialization of endColumn sort of calls itself. However, it seems that the code just treats the uninitialized variable as a 0 and so I get startColumn + 0 - 1. What is happening here behind the scenes? When does a variable get assigned a default value?

How can I automatically mute the volume at every boot?

Sometimes I forget to enable mute before shutting down my laptop. Can I set it up to be muted by default every time Ubuntu boots, before the login screen is displayed? When I try DoR's suggestion of sudo alsactl store, the settings stored in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state are lost on the next reboot. Something is using this file to automatically save the current volume settings every time I reboot.

Problem with ColdFusion communicating with MySQL database

Hi, I have been working to migrate a non-profit website from a local server (running Windows XP) to a GoDaddy hosting account (running Linux). Most of the pages are written in ColdFusion. Things have gone smoothly, up until this point. There is a flash form within the site (see this page: http://www.preservenet.cornell.edu/employ/submitjob.cfm) which, when completed, takes the visitor to this page: submitjobaction.cfm . I'm not quite sure what to make of this error, since I copied exactly what had been in the old MySQL database, and the .cfm files are exactly as they had been when they worked on the old server. Am I missing something? Below is the code from the database that the error seems to be referring to. When I change "Positionlat" to some default value in the database as it suggests in the error, it says that another field needs a default value, and it's a neverending chain of errors as I try to correct it. This is probably a stupid error that I'm missing, but I've been working at it for days and can't find what I'm missing. I would really appreciate any help. Why does the Scala compiler disallow overloaded methods with default arguments?

While there might be valid cases where such method overloadings could become ambiguous, why does the compiler disallow code which is neither ambiguous at compile time nor at run time? how do you document your development process?

My current state is a mixture of spreadsheets, wikis, documents, and dated folders for my input/configuration and output files and bzr version control for code. I am relatively new to programming that requires this level of documentation, and I would like to find a better, more coherent approach. update (for clarity): My inputs are data used to generate configuration files with parameter values and my outputs are analyses of model predictions. I would really like to have an approach that allows me to associate particular configuration(s) with particular outputs, so that I can ask questions of my documentation such as "what causes over/under estimates?" or "what causes error 'X'"?

Methods to Manage/Document "one-off" Reports

I'm a programmer that also does database stuff and I get a lot of so-called one-time report requests and recurring report requests. I work at a company that has a SQL Server database that we integrate third-party data with and we also have some third-party vendors that we have to use their proprietary reporting system to extract data in flat file format from that we don't integrate into SQL Server for security reasons. To generate many of these reports I have to query data from various systems, write small scripts to combine data from the separate systems, cry, pull my hair, curse the last guy's name that made the report before me, etc. My question is, what are some good methods for documenting the steps taken to generate these reports so the next poor soul that has to do them won't curse my name? As of now I just have a folder with subfolders per project with the selects and scripts that generated the last report but that seems like a "poor man's" solution. :)

The code is completely undocumented, both code comments and overall system design and there is no help on the web (unused outside the industry). The current developers have been working on the system for between 10 and 30 years and are adamant that documentation is unnecessary as you can just read the code to work out what's going on and that you can't trust comments. Why should such a system be documented?

How to keep word document, html and pdf documentation aligned

Is there a way to write documentation in a WYSIWYG editor which can then export into HTML, WORD and PDF and keep copies synchronized? This documentation are mostly technical notes and some contextual help for some softwares so they must contain images and some styling, they are not programmer's documentation (API list or functions list) for which probably a program like Javadoc or Doxygen would be the best choice. For example how do companies with hundreds different software lines and thousands of programmers deal with this? I have several solutions but they all seem lacking in some aspect: Latex/Tex : very good pdf and html export, not very user friendly and no full-blown WYSIWYG editor available. LibreOffice/OpenOffice : full blown WYSIWYG editor however html export not so good (need to edit manually exported html which needs to be maintained separately ) Mediawiki or any other wiki : could be keeping documentation in wikitext format, so html is automatically generated, pdf exportation is quite good with many available plugins. Again however need some formation for the staff to use it and need to setup a server for this. Notice I'm not asking for software A vs software B, I'm asking for general advice, big companies procedures for documentation and yes some software product names if available.

ATI Radeon HD 6870 Driver fails to install default-policy.sh does not support version

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 Beta, with everything updated completely. I'm using Ubuntu Classic, because Unity fails to run, supposedly because of my video card. The drivers for the Radeon HD 6870 series is apparently lacking, but I found a post stating the newest version has full support for Ubuntu Natty Narwhal. That post is slightly old, so i grabbed 11.3 for Ubuntu x86 off the ATI website. Ubuntu 12.04 VPN default route issue when using the UI

When setting up a VPN connection using the UI (System settings = Network) the VPN connection is used as the default route after connecting to it. How can I avoid this? That is without assigning manual addresses. I want the connection to use DHCP. It should use the eth* interfaces for my default route, like they are used before making the connection. The VPN route should only be used when connecting to addresses in the ppp0 adapters range. If possible using the UI only, not that I'm not used to editing config files... But the point of using Ubuntu for me was the "it just works" concept (which is true for 99% of the time, keep up the good work). I tried setting the "Method" combobox in the "Configure..." dialogue to "Automatic (VPN) addresses only". That doesn't make a difference. (Another thing I noticed; the UI shows my connection as a "Wireless connection" in the list control on the left. Don't know why... it has the right icon, but that's probably something for the bug tracker)

Set default owner/user

I'm a web developer, and so have set-up an old machine in the office as an Ubuntu Server, for the purposes of testing websites. I've set-up LAMP and have created a /var/www folder, from which all my local sites are served. The issue is that of user permissions, i.e. any files that I copy into that folder (from my Windows machine via the network) automatically take on me (daniel) as their owner. The problem is that I want www-data to become the owner. I did some research and saw that it should be possible to use setuid (and setgid) to automatically set www-data as the owner of all files put into /var/www automatically, so far I've not had any luck making it work. Can someone help please? Thank you UPDATE: Would this do what I want it to do? Default file permissions for php user www-data UPDATE 2: I've kinda fixed my issue by changing my samba settings. Using Webmin, I was able to go in and change the default settings (as seen here: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/521/captureon.png/)
