  • NHybernate, the Parallel Framework, and SQL Server

    - by andy
hey guys, we have a loop that: 1.Loops over several thousand xml files. Altogether we're parsing millions of "user" nodes. 2.In each iteration we parse a "user" xml, do custom deserialization 3.finally, in each iteration, we send our object to nhibernate for saving. We use: .SaveOrUpdateAndFlush(user); This is a lengthy process, and we thought it would be a perfect candidate for testing out the .NET 4.0 Parallel libraries. So we wrapped the loop in a: Parallel.ForEach(); After doing this, we start getting "random" Timeout Exceptions from SQL Server, and finally, after leaving it running all night, OutOfMemory unhandled exceptions. I haven't done deep debugging on this yet, but what do you guys think. Is this simply a limitation of SQL Server, or could it be our NHibernate setup, or what? cheers andy

  • Python: undefined reference to `_imp __Py_InitModule4'

    - by Mark
    I'm trying to do a debug build of the Rabbyt library using mingw's gcc to run with my MSVC built python26_d.. I got a lot of undefined references which caused me to create libpython26_d.a, however one of the undefined references remains. Googling gives me: http://www.techlists.org/archives/programming/pythonlist/2003-03/msg01035.shtml But -rdynamic doesn't help. e:\MinGW/bin\gcc.exe -mno-cygwin -mdll -O -Wall -g -IE:\code\python\python\py26\ include -IE:\code\python\python\py26\PC -c rabbyt/rabbyt._rabbyt.c -o build\temp .win32-2.6-pydebug\Debug\rabbyt\rabbyt._rabbyt.o -O3 -fno-strict-aliasing rabbyt/rabbyt._rabbyt.c:1351: warning: '__Pyx_SetItemInt' defined but not used writing build\temp.win32-2.6-pydebug\Debug\rabbyt\_rabbyt_d.def e:\MinGW/bin\gcc.exe -mno-cygwin -shared -g build\temp.win32-2.6-pydebug\Debug\r abbyt\rabbyt._rabbyt.o build\temp.win32-2.6-pydebug\Debug\rabbyt\_rabbyt_d.def - LE:\code\python\python\py26\libs -LE:\code\python\python\py26\PCbuild -lopengl32 -lglu32 -lpython26_d -lmsvcr90 -o build\lib.win32-2.6-pydebug\rabbyt\_rabbyt_d. pyd build\temp.win32-2.6-pydebug\Debug\rabbyt\rabbyt._rabbyt.o: In function `init_ra bbyt': E:/code/python/rabbyt/rabbyt/rabbyt._rabbyt.c:1121: undefined reference to `_imp __Py_InitModule4'

  • Using Parallel Extensions In Web Applications

    - by Greg
I'd like to hear some opinions as to what role, if any, parallel computing approaches, including the potential use of the parallel extensions (June CTP for example), have a in web applications. What scenarios does this approach fit and/or not fit for? My understanding of how exactly IIS and web browsers thread tasks is fairly limited. I would appreciate some insight on that if someone out there has a good understanding. I'm more curious to know if the way that IIS and web browsers work limits the ROI of creating threaded and/or asynchronous tasks in web applications in general. Thanks in advance.

  • Mock Assertions on objects inside Parallel ForEach's???

    - by jacko
Any idea how we can assert a mock object was called when it is being accessed inside Parallel.ForEach via a closure? I assume that because each invocation is on a different thread that Rhino Mocks loses track of the object? Pseudocode: var someStub = MockRepository.GenerateStub() Parallel.Foreach(collectionOfInts, anInt => someStub.DoSomething(anInt)) someStub.AssertWasCalled(s => s.DoSomething, Repeat.Five.Times) This test will return an expectation violation, expecting the stub to be called 5 times but being actually called 0 times. Any ideas how we can tell the lambdas to keep track of the thread-local stub object?

  • Parallel. For maintain input list order on output list

    - by romeozor
I'd like some input on keeping the order of a list during heavy-duty operations that I decided to try to do in a parallel manner to see if it boosts performance. (It did!) I came up with a solution, but since this was my first attempt at anything parallel, I'd need someone to slap my hands if I did something very stupid. There's a query that returns a list of card owners, sorted by name, then by date of birth. This needs to be rendered in a table on a web page (ASP.Net WebForms). The original coder decided he would construct the table cell-by-cell (TableCell), add them to rows (TableRow), then each row to the table. So no GridView, allegedly its performance is bad, but the performance was very poor regardless :). The database query returns in no time, the most time is spent on looping through the results and adding table cells etc. I made the following method to maintain the original order of the list: private TableRow[] ComposeRows(List<CardHolder> queryResult) { int queryElementsCount = queryResult.Count(); // array with the query's size var rowArray = new TableRow[queryElementsCount]; Parallel.For(0, queryElementsCount, i => { var row = new TableRow(); var cell = new TableCell(); // various operations, including simple ones such as: cell.Text = queryResult[i].Name; row.Cells.Add(cell); // here I'm adding the current item to it's original index // to maintain order in the output list rowArray[i] = row; }); return rowArray; } So as you can see, because I'm returning a very different type of data (List<CardHolder> -> TableRow[]), I can't just simply omit the ordering from the original query to do it after the operations. Also, I also thought it would be a good idea to Dispose() the objects at the end of each loop, because the query can return a huge list and letting cell and row objects pile up in the heap could impact performance.(?) How badly did I do? Does anyone have a better solution in case mine is flawed?

  • Parallel processing from a command queue on Linux (bash, python, ruby... whatever)

    - by mlambie
I have a list/queue of 200 commands that I need to run in a shell on a Linux server. I only want to have a maximum of 10 processes running (from the queue) at once. Some processes will take a few seconds to complete, other processes will take much longer. When a process finishes I want the next command to be "popped" from the queue and executed. Does anyone have code to solve this problem? Further elaboration: There's 200 pieces of work that need to be done, in a queue of some sort. I want to have at most 10 pieces of work going on at once. When a thread finishes a piece of work it should ask the queue for the next piece of work. If there's no more work in the queue, the thread should die. When all the threads have died it means all the work has been done. The actual problem I'm trying to solve is using imapsync to synchronize 200 mailboxes from an old mail server to a new mail server. Some users have large mailboxes and take a long time tto sync, others have very small mailboxes and sync quickly.

  • Parallel.For(): Update variable outside of loop

    - by TSS
I'm just looking in to the new .NET 4.0 features. With that, I'm attempting a simple calculation using Parallel. For and a normal for(x;x;x) loop. However, I'm getting different results about 50% of the time. long sum = 0; Parallel.For(1, 10000, y => { sum += y; } ); Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); sum = 0; for (int y = 1; y < 10000; y++) { sum += y; } Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); My guess is that the threads are trying to update "sum" at the same time. Is there an obvious way around it?

However, I'm getting different results about 50% of the time (no code change). long sum = 0; Parallel.For(1, 10000, y => { sum += y; }); Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); sum = 0; for (int y = 1; y < 10000; y++) { sum += y; } Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); Surely I'm missing something simple or do not completely understand the concept. My guess is that the threads are trying to update "sum" at the same time. If so, is there an obvious way around it?

I noticed a pattern of errors while trying to install PyMedia and Python Audio Tools. For both modules I run the following: $ python setup.py install Then I get a series of compilation errors, and then this: lipo: can't figure out the architecture type of: /var/folders/Kx/Kxxj4868HGi6VMhZLPyZN++++TI/-Tmp-//cch1y9AO.out error: command '/usr/bin/gcc-4.2' failed with exit status 1 I'm running Mac OS X 10.5, and this happens whether I'm using gcc-4.0 or gcc-4.2, Mac-Python 2.5 or 2.6, and MacPorts-Python 2.6. • Unable to build Python modules in Mandriva 2010

    - by SteveJ
I am trying to build a Python module (pyfits) but I get the following error: # python setup.py install /home/steve/src/pyfits-2.2.2/stsci_distutils_hack.py:239: DeprecationWarning: os.popen3 is deprecated. Use the subprocess module. (sin, sout, serr) = os.popen3(cmd) running install error: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/lib64/python2.6/config/Makefile (No such file or directory) I get the same error when I try and build other modules so my guess is I am missing a Python development library. I am running Mandriva 2010.0, any suggestions?

  • Run serveral daemon using python

    - by ylc
I noticed that serveral daemon invoked python seperately. For example, I have both wicd and ibus daemon running on my machine. Instead of launching a single instance of python, the daemons run with two python instance at the same time in htop: /usr/bin/python2 -O /usr/share/wicd/daemon/monitor.py python2 /usr/share/ibus/ui/gtk/main.py Is it a waste of doing that? If yes, how can I improve this? If no, why avoid putting all daemons run on a single python instance?

I am trying to learn django by following along with this tutorial. I am using django version 1.1.1 I run django-admin.py startproject mysite and it creates the files it should. • Cocoa App with Python extension which use Scipy -> ImportError: No module named scipy

    - by Snej
Hi: I have installed Scipy (via macports) for Python on my Mac and it runs fine when running Python scripts. But now I'm using Scipy (via PyObjc) for calculations embedded in a Cocoa App frontend. The following error occurs: ImportError: No module named scipy I am using the "Python.framework" in XCode. Does anybody know why Scipy module is not found? I even added it manually to the module search path via sys.path.append("/opt/local/var/macports/software/py26-scipy/0.7.1_0+gcc43/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/scipy/") EDIT: I found the problem myself. The path should be without "/scipy" at the end. But now I got an architecture problem: ImportError: dlopen(/opt/local/var/macports/software/py26-scipy/0.7.1_0+gcc43/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/scipy/fftpack/_fftpack.so, 2): no suitable image found. Did find: /opt/local/var/macports/software/py26-scipy/0.7.1_0+gcc43/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/scipy/fftpack/_fftpack.so: mach-o, but wrong architecture EDIT 2: I checked the architectures: Yes, sure it is an architecture problem. But when I run: file /opt/local/var/macports/software/py26-scipy/0.7.1_0+gcc43/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/scipy/fftpack/_fftpack.so I get a result Mach-O 64-bit bundle x86_64. And the Mac OS 10.6 PYTHON is: Mach-O universal binary with 3 architectures /usr/bin/python (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64 /usr/bin/python (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386 /usr/bin/python (for architecture ppc7400): Mach-O executable ppc I build the XCode project as x86_64.

Am trying to detect number plate from an image.I have converted an image to grayscale and segment image. Now i have to find and filter blobs from an image and to detect number plate from an image. I will explain what i did.. I jus read segment image license_plate = cv2.imread('license1_segmented.png',cv2.CV_LOAD_IMAGE_COLOR) license_plate_size = (license_plate.shape[1], license_plate.shape[0]) mask = cv2.cv.CreateImage (license_plate_size, 8, 1) cv2.cv.Set(mask, 1) thresh_image_ipl = cv2.cv.CreateImage(license_plate_size, cv2.cv.IPL_DEPTH_8U, 1) cv2.cv.SetData(thresh_image_ipl,thresh_image.tostring(),thresh_image.dtype.itemsize * 1 * thresh_image.shape[1]) min_blob_size = 100 # Blob must be 30 px by 30 px max_blob_size = 10000 threshold = 100 **myblobs = CBlobResult(thresh_image_ipl,mask, threshold, True)** myblobs.filter_blobs(min_blob_size, max_blob_size) blob_count = myblobs.GetNumBlobs() trying to find and filter blobs from an image. But am getting error while passing the parameters to CBlobResult which i highlighted above code.I mentioned the error below what i get while passing. Traceback (most recent call last): File "rectdetect1.py", line 110, in <module> myblobs = CBlobResult(thresh_image_ipl,image_area, threshold, True) File "/home/oomsys/pyblobs-read-only/blobs/BlobResult.py", line 92, in __init__ this = _BlobResult.new_CBlobResult(*args) NotImplementedError: Wrong number or type of arguments for overloaded function 'new_CBlobResult'. Possible C/C++ prototypes are: CBlobResult::CBlobResult() CBlobResult::CBlobResult(IplImage *,IplImage *,int, bool) CBlobResult::CBlobResult(CBlobResult const &) Anyone help me to find out the erros and to solve this and all... • How could there still not be a mysqldb module for Python 3?

    - by itsadok
This SO question is now more than two years old. MySQL is an incredibly popular database engine, Python is an incredibly popular programming language, and Python 3 has been officially released two years ago, and was available even before that. What's more, the whole mysqldb module is just a layer translating Python's db-api to MySQL's API. It's not that big of a library. I must be missing something here. How come almost* nobody in the entire open source community has spent the (I'm guessing) two weeks it takes to port this lib? Is Python 3 that unpopular? Is the combination of python and mysql not as common as I assume? Or maybe it's just a lot harder to port mysqldb than I assume? Anyone know the inside story on this? * Now I see that this guy has done it, which takes some of the wind out of my question, but it still seems to little and too late to make sense.

  • For what types of applications is Python a bad choice?

    - by Casey Patton
I just started learning Python, and I'd like to get some more context on the language. I realize that Python is a slow language relative to C or C++, etc. Thus, Python is probably not the best choice for applications that need to run quickly. Outside of this, it seems like Python is a great general purpose language that is easy to read and write. The available libraries give it a huge amount of functionality. Outside of performance critical applications, where is it a bad choice to use Python (and why)?

  • Why isn't there a python compiler to native machine code?

    - by user2986898
As I understand, the cause of the speed difference between compiled languages and python is, that the first compiles code all way to the native machine's code, whereas python compiles to python bytecode, to be interpreted by the PVM. I see that this way python codes can be used on multiple operation system (at least in most cases), however I do not understand, why is not there an additional (and optional) compiler for python, which compiles the same way as traditional compilers. This would leave to the programmer to chose, which is more important to them; multiplatform executability or performance on native machine. In general; why are not there any languages which could be behave both as compiled and interpreted?

  • Java dev learning Python: what concepts do I need to wrap my head around?

    - by LRE
I've run through a few tutorials and written some small projects. I'm right in the middle of a small project now infact. All is going well enough thanks in no small part to Uncle Google (who usually points me to Stackoverflow ;-) Several times in the last few days I've found myself wondering "what am I missing?" - I feel that I'm still thinking in Java as I write in Python. This question over at StackOverflow is full of tips about what resources to read up on for learning Python, but I still feel that I'm a Java dev with a dictionary (pun unintended) to translate into Python. What I really want to do is refactor my head to be able to write Pythonic Python instead of Java disguised as Python (not that I want to loose my Java skills). So, the crux of my question is: what concepts does a Java dev really need to learn to think Pythonic? This includes anything that needs to be un-learnt. ps: I consider language syntax to not be particularly relevant to this question.

  • Downloading Python 2.5.4 (from official website) in order to install it

    - by brilliant
I was quite hesitant about whether I should post this question here on "StackOverflow" or on "SuperUser", but finally decided to post it here as Python is more a programming language rather than a piece of software. I've been recently using Python 2.5.4 that is installed on my computer, but at the moment I am not at home (and won't be for about two weeks from now), so I need to install the same version of Python on another computer. This computer has Windows XP installed – just like the one that I have at home. The reason why I need Python 2.5.4 is because I am using “Google App Engine”, and I was told that it only supports Python 2.5 However, when I went to the official Python page for the download, I discovered that certain things have changed, and I don’t quite remember where exactly from that site I had downloaded Python 2.5.4 on my computer at home. I found this page: http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.5.4/ Here is how it looks: (If you can’t see it here, please check it out at this address: http://brad.cwahi.net/some_pictures/python_page.jpg ) A few things here are not clear to me. It says: “For x86 processors: python-2.5.4.msi For Win64-Itanium users: python-2.5.4.ia64.msi For Win64-AMD64 users: python-2.5.4.amd64.msi” First of all, I don’t know what processor I am using – whether mine is “x86” or not; and also, I don’t know whether I am an “Win64-Itanium” or an “Win64-AMD64” user. Are Itanium and AMD64 also processors? Later it says: “Windows XP and later already have MSI; many older machines will already have MSI installed.” I guess, it is my case, but then I am totally puzzled as to which link I should click as it seems now that I don’t need those three previous links (as MSI is already installed on Windows XP), but there is no fourth link provided for those who use “Windows XP” or older machines. Of course, there are these words after that: “Windows users may also be interested in Mark Hammond's win32all package, available from Sourceforge.” but it seems to me that it is something additional rather than the main file. So, my question is simple: Where in the official Python website I can download Python 2.5.4, precisely, which link I should click?

  • Boost Python - Limits to the number of arguments when wrapping a function

    - by Derek
I'm using Boost Python to wrap some C++ functions that I've created. One of my C++ functions contains 22 arguments. Boost complains when I try to compile my solution with this function, and I'm trying to figure out if it is just because this function has too many arguments. Does anyone know if such a limit exists? I've copied the error I'm getting below, not the code because I figure someone either knows the answer to this or not - and if there is no limit then I'll just try to figure it out myself. Thanks very much in advance!
