I understand that this can occur if the exchange information store is filling up with named properties... but I don't know how to determine which specific named property is at fault here. Is there a way to examine the DB for this type of info to see if there's a specific recurring named property that is consuming resources? -M

• Best practice for storing global data in PHP?

  Hi I'm running a web application that allows a user to log in. The user can add/remove content to his/her 'library' which is displayed on a page called "library.php". Instead of querying the database for the contents of the users library everytime they load "library.php", I want to store it globally for PHP when the user logs in, so that the query is only run once. Is there a best practice for doing this? fx. storing their library in an array in a session? Thanks for your time

  Hi - I want to config my app to use a different schema than the default for storing sessions. Basically, I want the app to store all its active_record objects in app_development and only its sessions in app_sessions. Normally this could be done by defining the sessions db in database.yml: development: # ... sessions: host: localhost database: app_sessions username: blah password: sssshhh #.... And then setting in the model: class Session < ActiveRecord::Base establish_connection :sessions #... end But since session doesn't have a model class defined, I'm looking for a way to tell it where to store its data. I've noticed the session comes from ActionController::Session, but couldn't find what I needed there. Any thoughts? thanks.

It seems like a slippery slope - I could use the machine store to store the entropy but then what prevents someone from getting at that as well? • Shoutcast admin panel not showing most of information

  I recently start audio streaming broadcast through third party - they provide server to broadcast audio. But when I accessed Shoutcast admin panel on the server, there's not much information I can use, for example, what if I want to ban a particular ip address. Here's screen shot- And none of options did work (listeners, tail logfile, view logfile, reverse ip list.. ) does it mean that provider blocks all features on shoutcast admin panel by default? or something else.. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks

• Storing varchar(max) & varbinary(max) together - Problem?

  I have an app that will have entries of both varchar(max) and varbinary(max) data types. I was considering putting these both in a separate table, together, even if only one of the two will be used at any given time. The question is whether storing them together has any impact on performance. Considering that they are stored in the heap, I'm thinking that having them together will not be a problem. However, the varchar(max) column will be probably have the text in row table option set. I couldn't find any performance testing or profiling while "googling bing," probably too specific a question? The SQL Server 2008 table looks like this: Id ParentId Version VersionDate StringContent - varchar(max) BinaryContent - varbinary(max) The app will decide which of the two columns to select for when the data is queried. The string column will much used much more frequently than the binary column - will this have any impact on performance?

• Checking for & storing multiple CheckBox selections in CSharp.

  I'm very new to CSharp and I can't seem to find a good solution to what I would consider a simple problem. Basically I'm trying to determine which CheckBoxs have been selected by the user and then randomly generate combinations of the selections the user has made. As new as I am, I am aware that you can use a simple statement such as: checkBox1.IsChecked == true I could have a long set of if statements which update an array/collection, but I'm told that in Csharp there is a way of determining which CheckBoxs are checked by querying the GroupBox that the CheckBoxs are in. Unless I'm mistaken (which is very possible) this is achieved by using Control features, unfortunately I've not come across these yet in my learning so if someone could clear things up that would be great. In summation, if someone has a simple solution for running through a set of checkBoxs and storing only the selected ones I would be most grateful.

Despite much SO'ing and Googling I'm unclear how I should be storing them in the database (SQL2005) - the code below shows the basics of how I'm creating the hash as a string and I'm currently inserting it into the database into a Char(88) column as that seems to be the length created consistently Is holding it as a String the best way to do it, if so will it always be 88 chars on a SHA512 (as I have seen some bizarre stuff on Google)?   Our software development team is growing very quickly. We have around 250 developers working on about 20 different projects. The majority of development is focused around Visual Studio. The release management procedure is getting a little strained now, with users competing for time and resources on various "official" build and signing servers. What I'm looking for is information on how to setup a proper, managed release process in a Microsoft environment. Ideally, I'd like some kind of continuous integration or nightly builds, integration of version control into Visual Studio and the ability to sign binaries after QA is complete.   I am building an automation test suite which is running on multiple machines, all reporting their status to a postgresql database. We will run a number of automated tests for which we will store the following information: test ID (a GUID) test name test description status (running, done, waiting to be run) progress (%) start time of test end time of test test result latest screenshot of the running test (updated every 30 seconds) The number of tests isn't huge (say a few thousands) and each machine (say, 50 of them) have a service which checks the database and figures out if it's time to start a new automated test on that machine. How should I organize my SQL table to store all the information? Is a single table with a column per attribute the way to go? If in the future I need to add attributes but want to keep compatibility with old database format (ie I may not want to delete and create a new table with more columns), how should I proceed? Should the new attributes just be in a different table? I'm also thinking of replicating the database. In case of failure, I don't mind if the latest screenshots aren't backed up on the slave database. Should I just store the screenshots in its own table to simplify the replication? Thanks!

  For an ASP.Net MVC application, I'm interested in storing some views and/or partial views in the database so that a few semi-technical users can do some basic view logic. Does anyone have any tips or lessons from experience on doing this? I know Phil Haack wrote a blog post on this about a year ago. He used IronRuby for scripting his views, (which would be fine for me). He created a quick proof-of-concept, but I can't find any other information on the topic.   Can you add annotate/blame-alike information to svn diff, so that for every changed line it includes which user and revision changed that line? For example, an annotate-diff comparing revisions 8-10 could output something like: 9 user1 - some line that user1 deleted in revision 9 10 user2 + some line that user2 added in revision 10 The context, lines around it which haven't changed, may be included as well or not, doesn't matter. It's not just a matter of "quickly" writing a shell script combining the output of svn diff and svn annotate. annotate for example will never show you who removed a line. It's also not a matter of doing annotate on a revision in the past: We're not interested in who originally added the line that got removed (that's not the one who "caused" the diff), we want to know who removed it. I suspect the only way to implement something to do this is to inspect each and every commit between the two revisions being compared (and somehow map all the changes in the separate diffs to lines in the total diff)... Does there exist a tool that does something like that?

  When designing a stock management database system (sales / purchases) what would be the best way to store the various taxes and other such amounts? A few of the fields that could be saved are: Unit price excluding tax Unit price including tax Tax per item Total excluding tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Total including tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Total tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Currently the most reasonable solution so far is storing down (roughly) item, quantity, total excluding tax (rounded) and the total tax (rounded). Can anyone suggest some better way of storing this details for a generic system? Also, given the system needs to be robust, what should be done if there were multiple tax values (eg: state and city) which might need to be separated, in this case a separate table would be in order, but would it be considered excessive to just have a rowID and some taxID mapping to a totalTax column?

• Pros and cons of ways of storing an unsigned int without an unsigned int data type

  I have values that are 64-bit unsigned ints, and I need to store them in mongodb, which has no unsigned int type. I see three main possibilities for storing them in other field types, and converting on going in and out: Using a signed int is probably easiest and most space efficient, but has the disadvantage that they're not human readable and if someone forgets to do the conversion, some of them will work, which may obscure errors. Raw binary is probably most difficult for inexperienced programmers to deal with, and also suffers from non-human-readability. A string representation is the least space efficient (~40 bytes in unicode vs 8 bytes per field), but then at least all of the possible values will map properly, and for querying only a conversion to string is required instead of a more complicated conversion. I need these values to be available from different platforms, so a single driver-specific solution isn't an option. Any major pros and cons I've missed? Which one would you use?

After sometime Process B comes accesses the same location of memory and read the value. I need to store in memory, because I dont want the data to persistent across reboots. But as long as the system is up, it Independent of the Process the data must be accessible. I tried MailSlots and Temporary files in windows, both seem to have problem where the process reference count drops to zero , the entities dont persist in memory.   I have standard arithmetic expressions sotred as strings eg. "WIDTH * 2 + HEIGHT * 2" In this example WIDTH and HEIGHT references other objects in my system and the literals WIDTH and HEIGHT refers to a property (Name) on those objects. The problem I'm having is when the Name property on an expression object changes the expression won't match anymore. One solution I came up with is to instead of storing "WIDTH * 2 + HEIGHT * 2" i store "{ID_OF_WIDTH} * 2 + {ID_OF_HEIGHT} * 2" And let my parser be able to parse this new syntax and implement an interface or such on referenced objects IExpressionReference { string IdentifierName { get; } } Anyone have a better/alternative solution to my problem?

• System information shown when booting Debian

  When booting Debian, you'll see it printing a lot of information about the system variables and such. I don't really need to see all that, so I'd like to modify some scripts to make sure that on boot, it just does what it has to do, without printing it on the screen. Just something I fancy. Offcourse, still seeing errors would be nice. But that long slur of text, I could do without. I've tried looking it up, but I can't find documentation on this specific thing anywhere.

  I need to store some data that looks a little like this: xyz 123 abc 456 hij 678 rer 838 Now I would just store it as a traditional string and integer model, and put in the datastore. But the data changes regularly, and is ONLY relevant when looked at as a COLLECTION. So it needs to be store as either a list of lists, or a list of objects, both of which can't really be done without pickling as far as I know. Can anyone help? Even storing it as a text file may work :S

But for HTTPS request, I lose the "forwardfor" information. I need to save the client IP address. How can I use HAproxy to load balance across a number of SSL servers, allowing those servers to know the client's IP address?

• DataType for storing a long serial number (10 bytes)

  We have a device which has a 10 byte serial number which must be read into our application and stored into a .net datatype. In the device it is stored as an unsigned 10-byte (80-bit) number. I don't expect we will be performing any mathematical operations on this number, but only displaying it to the user. The .NET framework doesn't have a built in UNIT128 to store this datatype. My suggestion for storing this datatype is to create a 10 element byte array and read in the data into this array. Are there any better solutions to this problem? Note: I have seen in this question that a GUID is a 128 byte signed integer, but it seems like a bad idea to use a GUID in this fashion. Any other suggestions?

• How do I get detailed information about what happens during logon

  Due to my IT department leaving I am now responsible for all our IT systems. I now have several problems to get my head around and fix. I run Active Directory on windows server 2003 and use group policy to apply settings etc. Recently we have had some windows 7 clients added to our network, these are having awful problems with our logon scripts and drive mappings. For the most part my XP clients are working without a problem. What I want to know is what is going on during logon, as running the logon scripts after I have logged on often works. Does anyone know of a way to get detailed log information of what is happening before and during logon. Thanks for your help and any suggestions you have for tracking down the source of these problems.
