  • getting emacs to move cursor by words on a Mac

    It's supposed to be M + cursor, but any shortcut in emacs using M (escape) on my mac sucks, because every time i need to use it, i need to release M (the escape key) and then press it again. Is there a better shortcut for moving along words in emacs (kind of like ctr + arrow in windows?)

  • How can I kill and wait for background processes to finish in a shell script when I Ctrl+C it?

    I'm trying to set up a shell script so that it runs background processes, and when I ctrl+C the shell script, it kills the children, then exits. The best that I've managed to come up with is this. It appears that kill 0 -INT also kills the script before the wait happens, so the shell script dies before the children complete.   • wxPython - ListCrtl and SQLite3

    I'm trying to get a SQLite3 DB to populate a wx.ListCrtl. I can get it to print to stdout/stderr without any problem. I just can't seem to figure out how to display the data in the DataWindow/DataList? I'm sure I've made some code mistakes, so any help is appreciated.   • Windows 7 Busy Icon won't stop spinning

    In windows 7 you have the busy icon that is a little blue wheel spinning beside the cursor when it is doing something. It has started to spin for about a second every 3-5 seconds. There is noting running that I can tell on the computer to cause the busy icon. It gets very annoying and I am not sure what to do to get it to stop. Ideas? Running a CPU Usage Gadget says I have less than 5% of the CPU being use and I have over 6GB of RAM free. (I have 8GB total) I am running a 3.6 GHZ AMD FX 4100 processor. EDIT- What I am actually seeing is the working in background pointer (the pointer is still visible beside the busy icon). EDIT 2 - After realizing this happened with the printer installation I turned on the the printer and the busy icon stopped. The printer is setup wirelessly. How do I stop Windows from (I guess) checking for the printer? That is what I assume it is doing. I am using a HP Officejet 8600

    Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed?   • Hang while starting several daemons [solved]

    I’m running a Debian Squeeze AMD64 server. Target runlevel after boot is runlevel 2, which includes rsyslogd, cron, sshd and some other stuff, but not dovecot, postfix, apache2, etc. The system fails to reach runlevel 2 with several symptoms: The system hangs at trying to start rsyslogd Booting into runlevel 1 works, then login from the console works Starting rsyslogd from runlevel 1 via /etc/init.d/rsyslog hangs Starting runlevel 2 with rsyslogd disabled works But then, logging in via console fails: I get the motd, and then nothing Starting sshd from runlevel 1 succeeds But then, I cannot login via ssh. Sometimes password ssh login gives me the motd and then nothing, sometimes not even this. Trying to offer a public key seems to annoy the sshd enough to not talk to me any further. When rebooting from runlevel 1, the server hangs at trying to stop apache2 (which is not running, so this really should be trivial). Trying to stop apache2 when logged in in runleve 1 does hang as well. And that’s just the stuff which fails all the time. RAM has been tested, dmesg shows no problems. I have no clue. Update: (shortened) output from rsyslogd -c4 -d called in runlevel 1 rsyslogd 4.6.4 startup, compatibility mode 4, module path '' caller requested object 'net', not found (iRet -3003) Requested to load module 'lmnet' loading module '/user/lib/rsyslog/lmnet.so' module of type 2 being loaded conf.c requested ref for 'lmnet', refcount 1 rsylog runtime initialized, version 4.6.4, current users 1 syslogd.c requested ref for 'lmnet', refcount now 2 I can kill rsyslogd with Strg+C, then. /var/log shows none of the configured log files, though. Update2: Thanks to @DerfK I still have no clue, but at least I narrowed down the problem. I’m now testing with /etc/init.d/apache2 stop (without an apache2 running, of course) which hangs as well and looks like an even more obvious failure. After some testing I found out that a file with one single line: /usr/sbin/apache2ctl configtest /dev/null 2&1 hangs, while the same line executed in an interactive shell works. I was not able to further reduce this line while, i. e. every single part, the stream redirections and the commando itself is necessary to reproduce the hang. @DerfK also pointed me to strace which gave a shallow hint about what kind of hang we have here: wait4(-1for the init scripts futex(0xsomepointer, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL for rsyslogd / apache2 binaries called by the init scripts The system was installed as a Debian Lenny by my hoster in autumn 2011, I upgraded it to Squeeze immediately and kept it up to date with Squeeze, which then used to be testing. There were no big changes, though. I guess I never tried to reboot the system before. Update3: I found the problem. My /etc/nsswitch.conf specified ldap as hosts lookup backup, which is not available at that time of the boot. Relying on dns solely fixes my boot problems.

  • Newly configured MSSQL2008, TIME_WAIT but no ESTABLISHED?

    Windows 2008 R2, standard. No firewall locally on it. Newly setup because an old SQL2000 had two disks die (or could it be the raid controller?) at the same time. Luckily, I had fresh backups. The databases have been restored, and SP2 for SQL2008 applied. I can see various hosts trying to establish a session, but the (customer) sites does not work and I don't see the expected established sessions. A wireshark reveals a full three-way handshake. Since it's customer machines connecting, I cannot logon to them and restart application pools.. What on earth could be causing this?   • Redis connection issue

    We are currently experiencing a lot of Redis errors with the message Unable to connect: read error on connection, trying next server We run Redis on FreeBSD using PHP Redis and we have a hard time reproducing the error on Ubuntu so this might be a hint. There's a long-running issue on that topic on github. Basically we get a socket from the operating system with a call to connect(host, port, timeout) in phpredis, but when we do a select(db_index) afterwards, we get an exception. Could there be an issue with persistance? I assume that connect does nothing in the background and select tries to access the connection, which is actually closed. We don't run into a timeout. We tried tuning TIME_WAIT without success. Any other ideas on where the problem might come from? What is the best way to track the issue down? dtrace maybe? Update We are currently looking into our BGSAVE settings. Interestingly it takes half a second and more to create a fork for the process which regularly writes the data to disk (persistence) and maybe redis can't respond to connect() requests during that timespan.

  • All computers on network get stuck waiting for some sites indefinetely

    This happens across three computers, running windows 7 and Ubuntu, firefox, opera, and chrome (all latest versions). I am connected to the internet through a Verizon wireless usb modem. When I try to open some web pages they will never finish loading (and usually never even show anything). The status bar at the bottom of the browser will display "Waiting for X" The servers it gets stuck on include: platform.twitter.com s7.addthis.com connect.facebook.net ajax.googleapis.com 2mdn.net Ive been getting away with just blocking them in AdBlock up until now, however the last two have been causing problems. There are some sites which require googleapis.com to load correctly, and some that wont ever load unless its blocked. eBay requires access to 2mdn.net to load pictures. On top of this its getting really annoying having to update AdBlock across all these computers whenever a new site pops up. I'm hoping there's some easier way to fix this? The different sites causing the freeze indicate to me that it's either a problem on my end (somehow?) or some server side software that got updated with a new bug?

  • jquery Setting cursor position in contenteditable div

    The old version of the question is below, after researching more, I decided to rephrase the question. The problem as before is, I need to focus a contenteditable div without highlighting the text, doing straight up focus highlights the text in Chrome. I realize that people solved this problems in textareas by resetting the caret position in the textarea. How can I do that with a contenteditable element? All the plugins I've tried only works with textareas. Thanks. Old Phrasing of the question: I have a contenteditable element that I want to focus, but only insofar as to place the cursor at the front of the element, rather selecting everything. elem.trigger('focus'); with jquery selects all the text in the entire element in chrome. Firefox behaves correctly, setting the caret at the front of the text. How can I get Chrome to behave the way I want, or is focus perhaps not what I'm looking for. Thanks

You need to escape the first single quote you say... $ alias v='vim -c "\'\""' Hmm. That didn't work either... So I try a whole lot of variations of single quoted and double quoted madness, bang my head against the table and load up stackoverflow in my browser, and here we are. How do I properly escape this alias?

  • Wait for function to finish before starting again.

    Good Morning, I am trying to call the same function everytime the user presses a button. Here is what happens at the moment.. User clicks button - Calls function - function takes 1000ms+ to finish (due to animation with jQuery and AJAX calls) What I want to happen is every time the user presses the button it adds the function to the queue, waits for the previous call to finish, and then starts.. Is this possible? Sorry if my explanation is a bit confusing.. Thanks Matthew

    In my web application I call a document can be huge. This document is loaded into an iframe. I have a title, buttons and the text which all depends on this document. The text is from the large document and is displayed in the iframe. I'd like to show an animated gif while the document is loading on 3 places (1: document title, 2: document buttons, 3: document text, the iframe) I've tried the onload event on the Iframe, but this doesn't give the me the desired effect.   • Set focus and carret position in textarea according to mouse position, as if user had clicked

    Once a page with a textarea is loaded, I want some textarea to have the focus immediatly if the mouse cursor is inside that textarea. This is the easy part because a onmousehover handler can set the focus. Now, how to I also set the position of the caret? I would like the caret to be where it would be if the user had clicked using the mouse to set the focus/caret. The basic use case is : User clicks on a link and waits (mouse barely moves) A page is delivered, it contains a big textarea only, full of text User types using keyboard Characters are inserted right below the mouse cursor Today the user has to wait until the caret is visible (at the top left of the textarea) and then click to move the caret before typing.
