• Web and Flex developer career question [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: should i concentrate on logical and puzzles part in programming, i want to be a web (flex)developer? I'm a computer science student and have been learning Flex and Actionscript 3.0 for 4 months. I know it's easy to program in MXML, and Actionscript 3.0 is pretty easy with bunch of classes, but when I try to code in C++ or C, I struggle, I feel I'm being inefficient and it scares me. Since I'm a student, I've no experience in developing algorithms and tough program solving? I'd like to be a web developer. Does a web developer need strong fundamentals when it comes to things such as complex algorithms and high end coding?

• Keyboard "type ahead" in CRUD web apps?

  In some data entry contexts, I've seen data typists, type really fast and know so well the app they use, and have a mechanic quality in their work so that they can "type ahead", ie continue typing and "tab-bing" and "enter-ing" faster than the display updates, so that in many occasions they are typing in the data for the next form before it draws itself. Then when this next entry form appears, their keystrokes fill the text boxes and they continue typing, selecting etc. In contexts like this, this speed is desirable, since this persons are really productive. I think this "type ahead of time" is only possible in desktop apps, but I may be wrong. My question is whether this way of handling the keyboard buffer (which in desktop apps require no extra programming) is achievable in web apps, or is this impossible because of the way web apps work, handle sessions, etc (network latency and the overhead of generating new web pages ) ?

  Hi dear Gurus! I'm in stuck point now, so please at least try to help me. I've installed DPM 2010 on cluster server (w2k8 r2), everything was fine. Than I've tried tot install Protection Agent on both server of my cluster, but I'm getting error Error 312: The agent operation failed because the DPM Agent Coordinator service is not responding. Error details: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it (0x80070422) Recommended action: Restart the DPM Agent Coordinator service on . And the thing is that I'm totally can't see DPM Agent Coordinator service not on the localhost, nor on the second server. All the suggestion, that I've found in the internet are suggesting to restart this service, but how can I perform this if the one is absent? I'll be glad for any help

• Where can I start learning to build web applications in C#

  So far I've written web sites in PHP, except for a pet project of mine written in Python. I'd like to start learning C# for use on the web, but I have no idea where to start. I know nothing of .Net. Are there any good tutorials or online books etc. which give a brief intro to the .Net environment (specifically C#, and specifically for the web)? I'm not even sure what I need to install. Visual Studio I guess, but what else? Anything special, or will VS do the trick?

• Common Areas For Securing Web Services

  The only way to truly keep a web service secure is to host it on a web server and then turn off the server. In real life no web service is 100% secure but there are methodologies for increasing the security around web services. In order for consumers of a web service they must adhere to the service’s Service-Level Agreement (SLA).  An SLA is a digital contract between a web service and its consumer. This contract defines what methods and protocols must be used to access the web service along with the defined data formats for sending and receiving data through the service. If either part does not abide by the contract then the service will not be accessible for consumption. Common areas for securing web services: Universal Discovery Description Integration  (UDDI) Web Service Description Language  (WSDL) Application Level Network Level “UDDI is a specification for maintaining standardized directories of information about web services, recording their capabilities, location and requirements in a universally recognized format.” (UDDI, 2010) WSDL on the other hand is a standardized format for defining a web service. A WSDL describes the allowable methods for accessing the web service along with what operations it performs. Web services in the Application Level can control access to what data is available by implementing its own security through various methodologies but the most common method is to have a consumer pass in a token along with a system identifier so that they system can validate the users access to any data or actions that they may be requesting. Security restrictions can also be applied to the host web server of the service by restricting access to the site by IP address or login credentials. Furthermore, companies can also block access to a service by using firewall rules and only allowing access to specific services on certain ports coming from specific IP addresses. This last methodology may require consumers to obtain a static IP address and then register it with the web service host so that they will be provide access to the information they wish to obtain. It is important to note that these areas can be secured in any combination based on the security level tolerance dictated by the publisher of the web service. This being said, the bare minimum security implantation must be in the Application Level within the web service itself. Typically I create a security layer within a web services exposed Internet that requires a consumer identifier and a consumer token. • Do web crawlers/spiders index azure web sites?

  For somebody who wants their web site to be as discoverable as possible (and who doesn't?), are Microsoft's Azure web sites (azurewebsites.net) a feasible domain to host sites? I have a site that is both on an azurewebsites.net and hosted under a completely different name by discountasp.net Both of these sites are exactly the same, except for the URL; whenever I update the code, I republish the site to/in both places. So obviosuly, they both have the same H1 and H2 elements. Searching for the value/content in my H1 tag, I find my .com site listed #3 on google and #2 on both Bing and Yahoo; OTOH, my azurewebsites.net site doesn't show up on the first page at all, in any of them. This makes me wonder if azurewebsites.net should only be used for Web API hosting and such-like, not for generic/commercial "public" sites. Are my conclusions valid?

• Web Host for Small Rails-based CMS site [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am building a site for someone that uses a Rails-based content management system that I built myself. All of the Rails deployment experience I have so far has been over small intranets. I'm looking at web hosts like rackspace, because it seems like they're well-suited for Rails deployment. However, for a site that's not going to have more than a couple of hundred hits a month (if even that), I'm not sure it's necessary. I've also used Dreamhost's Phusion Passenger deployment for small projects before, but it seems barely functional and not well-supported, and I've also used Heroku for deployment, but I think a regular web host may do a little bit better, as they'll need things like Google Apps for Gmail set up. If anyone could provide some guidance on this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I get confused when I see things on rackspace like "1.5c/hour", because I'm not sure how that gets computed.

  So I know HTML5 is the "replacement" for Flash...however it's obviously not mainstream just yet......but what else is it supposed to replace. I ask this because web-dev has always been a secret kinda side-passion of mine (even though I a firmware programmer mostly doing C/Java stuff). And anyway I want to pursue a side thing at doing web design (I know basic XHTML/CSS + some CSS3) But what exactly is I guess...."pointless" to study? JavaScript I assume will always be a huge part of web design? (HTML5 isn't replacing that is it?) What about Ajax and CSS itself?) And then there's Flash....not sure if thats really worth putting effort into? Also there's Adobe Flex/Air......I'm a bit confused if you can't tell.

• Advice needed on Process - Service Design

  Need some advice from experts on designing a flow. Create a service that will read a csv file which may contain anywhere over 6000+ rows of individual ids as shown in the sample below. Need to read that file and go to oracle database and fetch a vname,vnumber,vid of each id in the csv and then go to document repository i.e. Oracle UCM and download all documents matching vname,vnumber,vid there can be =0 documents for each vname,vnumber,vid and save them on a file system. UCM exposes a webservice to dowload the documents. Finally create a new csv appending the filenames that are downloaded for each id. Need to keep track of any errors but need to make sure to go over the whole ids in the csv to download the documents and skip in case of errors. Need some advice on how to go about designing this as there may be over 6000+ rows in a csv file and looping it and hitting the database for each individual id and then hitting a UCM may be a bit expensive so open for any idea. How to go by designing this solution. Wondering if messaging can be helpful here or offloading process of getting the vname,vnumber,vid to pl/sql packages, creating staging tables etc. Initial csv that contains ids: **ID** 12345a 12s345 3456fr we9795 we9797 Final csv output: **ID Files Downloaded from UCM** 12345a a.pdf,b.doc,d.txt 12s345 a1.pdf,s2.pdf,f4.gif 3456fr b.xls we9795 we9797 x.doc Thanks

I recently tried A Small Orange, whose GUI was not compelling, and I quickly learned to loathe c panel. I looked into using GoDaddy, but reviews of their service have been very negative. I was satisfied with iPower's control panel, so something similar would be appropriate.   I´ve to make an offer to a client who wants me to develope a web-service for him. I have some trouble calculating the pricing - can you help me? Here is a rough outline of the project: It´s a portal on which various artists and entertainers can register and administrate there profile (texts, gallerie, some embedded videos, choose categories and radius of offer, etc). Other user can browse the artists by 3-4 level categories and countries/staats. If someone wants to hire a artists, he can put them in an "shopping-basket" and can mail everyone in his basket. The Artists can answer them with a form on the website (he doesn't get the email of the other person). Users should be able to comment/rate the artists. But if an artists wants this comments/ratings visible on his profile he must pay, and after that, the admin of the site must activate this comments/ratings. So, no more information given, what would you charge (ca.)? Edit: It´ll be developed with php/codeigniter. A .psd design is already there.

• What's the simplest way to provide a portable, locally running webservice server application?

  We have a bigger website running that offers a JsonRpc web service. For offline demonstration purposes I want to realize a portable, locally running webserver with a minimalistic feature replication of the live webservice, and bundle this together with Html files which do Ajax requests to it. This local server executable should have as little dependencies as possible. It's gonna be run and presented by non-devs on non-dev Windows machines, so I would prefer having a simple executable plus the service code - whereas language doesn't matter as long as it is .NET, PHP or Java. I'll need a small database behind which probably will be Sqlite. It's important to say that for some reasons we cannot use the original web service code, but we have to rewrite it new for the local demo server, this is why I want to put minimal effort in the local server tech. An installer for distribution is not mandatory, it's okay to have a zip file with an executable in it which starts up the local webserver. What would you recommend realizing these requirements? I've done some research already, but would love to here your opinions and get some pointers!

• Stopping the service and the babysited application before uninstalling

  Hi all, I have a service MyService.exe that is babysitting my application MyApp.exe, meaning it starts the application when this one crashes or whatever. Basically when the service is stopped the application is stopped (by the service) and when the service is started the application is started by the service. In order to stop my service and by that my application when uninstalling I'm doing: <ServiceControl Id='MyServiceControl' Name='MyServiceForTest' Start='install' Stop='uninstall' Remove='uninstall'/> But when I want to uninstall everything I get the error message: "The setup must update files or services that cannot be updated while the system is running. If you choose to continue, a reboot will be required to complete the setup.". If I manually stop the service before running the uninstaller I don't get this msg as both my service and my application aren't then running anymore. In the log file I noticed that this happens in InstallValidate and I get this message b/c of MyApp.exe being running. I think what happens is: the uninstallers checks the running applications, it notices that the MyService.exe and MyApp.exe are both running, detects probably that the MyService.exe will be stopped by the uninstaller itself as instructed, but doesn't know about the MyApp.exe that this one will also be terminated once the service will be stopped so it will show the reboot-message. I can't just close MyApp.exe from uninstaller b/c the service will restart it again. How could I solve this problem so that the user won't need to reboot or to manually stop the service before doing an uninstall/upgrade? Also, I can't change MyService and MyApp code anymore so I will have to do this from the (un)installer only. TIA, Viv

  Hello, I have been doing more client-side development, managing the UI on the client and submitting data to the server via web service calls. I'm not looking for implementation details, but was curious on developer preferences for displaying an operation in process and what to display when completed or even failed. As a for instance, just for clarification sake, what if you are submitting a profile form's data to a web service. I want to display that something's happening to the user, and give them a message that the form submitted successfully. I've in the past used a twitter-style message (that appears at the top), modal dialogs... I was curious what worked for others and any advice (what did the users like/not like, etc.). Again, technical details aren't needed. Thanks.

• Max number of web methods?

  Guys I have a web service in asp.net 2.0 that has 234 methods. It seems that when I add another method the site does not compile in VS2005 until I remove one first. I get a message saying that the new method I just added does not exist in a file that belongs in the Microsoft.Net/.../Temporary Files directory. I have restarted IIS, closed down VS2005, removed all files from this temp directory but to no avail. The only way to get the code to compile is to remove another one so as to keep 234 methods.... I can consistency replicate this behaviour so it cannot be my code. Now I know this seems strange but it is true! One other strange thing is that exactly 100 of the method names begin with the word GetXXXyyyZZZ Has anyone else experienced problems with the maximum number of methods that are allowed in a web service? • How to design service that can provide interface as JAX-WS web service, or via JMS, or as local meth

  Using a typical JEE framework, how do I develop and deploy a service that can be called as a web service (with a WSDL interface), be invoked via JMS messages, or called directly from another service in the same container? Here's some more context: Currently I am responsible for a service (let's call it Service X) with the following properties: Interface definition is a human readable document kept up-to-date manually. Accepts HTTP form-encoded requests to a single URL. Sends plain old XML responses (no schema). Uses Apache to accept requests + a proprietary application server (not servlet or EJB based) containing all logic which runs in a seperate tier. Makes heavy use of a relational database. Called both by internal applications written in a variety of languages and also by a small number of third-parties. I want to (or at least, have been told to!): Switch to a well-known (pref. open source) JEE stack such as JBoss, Glassfish, etc. Split Service X into Service A and Service B so that we can take Service B down for maintenance without affecting Service A. Note that Service B will depend on (i.e. need to make requests to) Service A. Make both services easier for third parties to integrate with by providing at least a WS-I style interface (WSDL + SOAP + XML + HTTP) and probably a JMS interface too. In future we might consider a more lightweight API too (REST + JSON? Google Protocol Buffers?) but that's a nice to have. Additional consideration are: On a smaller deployment, Service A and Service B will likely to running on the same machine and it would seem rather silly for them to use HTTP or a message bus to communicate; better if they could run in the same container and make method calls to each other. Backwards compatibility with the existing ad-hoc Service X interface is not required, and we're not planning on re-using too much of the existing code for the new services. I'm happy with either contract-first (WSDL I guess) or (annotated) code-first development. Apologies if my terminology is a bit hazy - I'm pretty experienced with Java and web programming in general, but am finding it quite hard to get up to speed with all this enterprise / SOA stuff - it seems I have a lot to learn! I'm also not very used to using a framework rather than simply writing code that calls some packages to do things. I've got as far as downloading Glassfish, knocking up a simple WSDL file and using wsimport + a little dummy code to turn that into a WAR file which I've deployed.

• ActiveX Content in a local web page, and "the mark of the web"

  Hi, I'm trying to make a webpage that people will run from their hard drives, locally, and this page will show a .wmv video (which is also stored locally), using Windows Media Player When I run this, IE shows me the "ActiveX Warning" bar at the top, which is what i'm trying to work around. If I load this from a web server, it loads fine, but from the local disk, it won't. Now, apparently, MS has added the Mark of the Web thingy precisely to work around this problem, however, I've been trying for a while to make it work, and it just didn't. I still get the warning bar. Is the Mark of the Web supposed to still work? Or this is some kind of deprecated thing? Am I doing anything wrong? I'm supposedly following all instructions, it looks like: and I've tried placing it before DOCTYPE, between DOCTYPE and <HTML>, right after <HTML>, in the <HEAD> of the document, etc. Nothing seems to work. I've tried this in IE7 and IE8 Any ideas will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!

• Choosing a Java Web Framework now?

  we are in the planning stage of migrating a large website which is built on a custom developed mvc framework to a java based web framework which provides built-in support for ajax, rich media content, mashup, templates based layout, validation, maximum html/java code separation. Grails looked like a good choice, however, we do not want to use a scripting language. We want to continue using java. Template based layout is a primary concern as we intend to use this web application with multiple web sites with similar functionality but radically different look and feel. Is portal based solution a good fit to this problem? Any insights on using "Spring Roo" or "Play" will be very helpful. I did find similar posts like this, but it is more than a year old. Things have surely changed in the mean time! EDIT 1: Thanks for the great answers! This site is turning to be the best single source for in-the-trenches programmer info. However, I was expecting more info on using a portal-cms duo. Jahia looks goods. Anything similar?
