• Copying Chinese Characters from PDF

  I am on a Windows 7 laptop, which I believe comes pre installed with all the language packs to my knowledge. I can see Chinese characters with no issues and normally can copy them fine. (From browser to Microsoft Office works great). I have many PDFs with chinese characters in them, whenever I try to copy them and paste them into another program such as a browser, Microsoft Office, ect I just get strange foreign characters such as: This is copying a line. It is in this order: Chinese characters, pinyin (chinese in roman letters), and then the Englis translation. ,ô t¯ing w?o shu¯o listen to me The pinyin is also getting messed up, as the tonal marks (accents) about each letter are moving to a space of their own. Any ideas on to how to fix this? Thank you very much!

• MD3200 - 3 to 4x less throughput than MD1220. Am I missing something here?

  I have two R710 servers with similar configuration. One in my office has MD1220 attached. Another one in the datacenter of my hosting services vendor has MD3200. I'm getting significantly worse throughput from MD3200 at my vendors setup. I'm mostly interested in sequential writes, and I'm getting these results in bonnie++ and dd tests: Seq. writes on MD1220 in my office: 1.1 GB/s - bonnie++, 1.3GB/s - dd Seq. writes on MD3200 at my vendor's: 240MB/s - bonnie++, 310MB/s - dd Unfortunately, I could not test the exactly the same configurations, but the two I have should be comparable. If anything, my good performing environment is cheaper than the bad performing. I expect at least similar throughput from these two setups. My vendor cannot really help me. Hopefully, somebody more familiar with the DAS performance can look at it and tell if I'm missing something here and my expectations are too high. To summarize, the question here is it reasonable to expect about 100MB/s of sequential write throughput per each couple of drives in RAID10 on MD3200? Is there any trick to enable such performance in MD3200 with dual controller as opposed to simple MD1220 with a single H800 adapter? More details about the configurations: A good one in my office: Dell R710 2CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz 12 cores 96GB DDR3, OS: RHEL 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 x86_64 20x300GB 2.5" SAS 10K in a single RAID10 1MB chunk size on MD1220 + Dell H800 I/O controller with 1GB cache in the host Not so good one at my vendor's: Dell R710 2CPU L5520 @ 2.27GHz 8 cores 144GB DDR3, OS: RHEL 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5 x86_64 20x146GB 2.5" SAS 15K in a single RAID10 512KB chunk size, Dell MD3200, 2 I/O controllers in array with 1GB cache each Additional information. I've also ran the same tests on the same vendor's host, but the storage was: two raids of 14x146GB 15K RPM drives RAID 10, striped together on the OS level on MD3000+MD1000. The performance was about 25% worse than on MD3200 despite having more drives. When I ran similar tests on the internal storage of my vendor's host (2x146GB 15K RPM drives RAID1, Perc 6i) I've got about 128MB/s seq. writes. Just two internal drives gave me about a half of 20 drives' throughput on MD3200. The random I/O performance of the MD3200 setup is ok, it gives me at least 1300 IOPS. • Which linux distro for a laptop in windows environmet?

  I just got new laptop at work. What would you recommend as a linux distribution for it? All other developers are working under windows, and use windows tools. I'm currently using ArchLinux, but want to change it. I don't want to waste time configuring wireless, windows network shares, network pritners, projector, etc ... I want this stuff to just work, while still having sane and stable development evironment and tools. Is Ubuntu a good choice for this? I use gentoo at home, but don't think it is a good match for work environmet. EDIT: Note that we are working on cross platform apps, and deployment platform is almost always linux. There are very few windows apps that I have to use (like MS Project). It is just that everything else is windows centric. I use linux because I feel more productive with it, even if I have to dual boot to edit MS Project files.

• Transferring FSMO roles over vpn

  I have a server located at one of our offices which is quite old and is due to be upgraded soon, this server holds the FSMO roles, I have another server in another office, both are DC's in the same domain and both are replicated, both run Server 2003 standard. I need to transfer the FSMO roles from the old server to the the one I have in the other office before I upgrade. Also I am looking at bringing in Exchange 2010 server however I cant install/configure that until I transfer the roles as it needs to be at the same site as the schema master. My question really is as both servers replicate over a vpn, how quickly will the roles transfer and will there be downtime as I need to make sure that while the transfer is running, both servers will service logon's and share files. or would it be better to do it out of hours? many thanks and apologies if I've missed out anything Regards Tom

Don't know how to write this one. Get all mail that is uncategorized and flagged with a red "Today" flag. Don't know how to write this one. Once I have the individual queries, I will combine and OR them. I am stuck on how to filter the flag value.

  have main office pfsense firewall configured like this: local networks WAN - internet LAN - local network VOIP - IP phones need to connect remote offices (multi-users) and single remote users (from home) use IPSEC or OpenVPN to build "permanent" automatically connecting tunnels from remote location to main location. in remote locations, network will look like this: WAN - internet LAN - local network multiple users VOIP - multiple IP phones in order for the IP phones to work they have to be able to "see" the VOIP network and the VOIP server back at the main office for single remote users ( like from home ) the setup will be similar but only one phone and one computer so questions: best way to tie networks together? IPSEC or OpenVPN can this be setup to automatically connect ? any issues/suggestions with that design/topology ? QoS or issues with running the VOIP traffic over a VPN throughput, quality etc.. obviously depends on remote locations connection to some degree

  In the last three month I was experiencing that my internet connection started to get very slow and websites had long time to load. The first thing I made was an ping to www.google.com which showed that I was loosing pakets. Here some of the results: 64 bytes from 74.125.39.103: icmp_seq=2909 ttl=53 time=48.222 ms Request timeout for icmp_seq 2910 Request timeout for icmp_seq 2911 64 bytes from 74.125.39.103: icmp_seq=2912 ttl=53 time=44.372 ms Days later I had to reset my router because it wasn't able to establish a correct network connection. It was after the reset when things worked again for some days. But later the same network timeouts started to happen again. I would like to know how I can analyze the problem to get to the source which is causing this timeouts. Which steps do you take to circle in this Problem? • Where can I find a useful Unicode fallback font for Mac OS X?

  On every browser I've tried (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Omniweb), when I go to a web page containing somewhat less-common characters, I can't see the glyphs. For example, on the Wikipedia page for the Bengali Language, the very first line contains a string of squares; on Windows, I can see the Bengali writing. On Windows, as long as I have the Arial Unicode MS font installed, these characters fall back to that font and display properly. Mac OS X doesn't seem to ship with a font containing these Unicode characters (it has Arial Unicode MS, but it must be a subset of the Windows version because Bengali doesn't display in that font). I checked on my Snow Leopard DVD and I installed "Additional Fonts" from the Optional Installs package, but I'm still missing many languages. Is there any good, free font that contains a large collection of languages? I know creating fonts is difficult and time-consuming, but it seems like including at least one font like this with operating systems should be standard by now.

When I send mail (from OWA, OR Outlook) there is a delay of up to 3 minutes from when i send the message, to when it's received (in my gmail account for example) I've listed the headers below. • Exchange server not serving mobile devices - how to troubleshoot?

  Our exchange server has suddenly stopped serving mobile devices. Attempts to connect result in our ActiveSync server returning HTTP 500. It is serving outlook clients fine. Our server is Windows 2003 SBS 6.5 SP2 There are no abnormal events in the system log. I ran the "Exchange ActiveSync with AutoDiscover" at https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/ I've notice an abnormality in the exchange properties, Log File Directory shows: Access denied. Facility: Win32 ID no: 80070005 Exchange System Manager As shown in the following image: I think it may be related to a recent issue we had here: http://serverfault.com/questions/40222/windows-server-2003-suddenly-unable-to-connect-to-anything We followed a procedure to reinstall TCP/IP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325356 I've run the "exchange activesync" connectivity test at testexchangeconnectivity.com: Attempting to Resolve the host name mail.immersive.com.au in DNS. • Excel 2003 opening files on network

  The network is laid out with an XP Pro computer as the server hosting files, then 3 XP computers connecting to it for filesharing, all on it's own router. One computer can open .xls files no problem, and she runs Office XP. The other two computers run Office 2003, and cannot open any shared files by double-clicking them, or by selecting File-Open in Excel. If the file gets copied to the local computer, it opens instantly. I have tried disabling the AV on all computers, disabling the Windows firewall, and doublechecking permissions on the server. I have also tried disabling DDE, but that doesn't help at all, just like Tools-Options-unticking Ignore other applications. Any ideas? This apparently started a couple days ago

• Converting AES encryption token code in C# to php

  Hello, I have the following .Net code which takes two inputs. 1) A 128 bit base 64 encoded key and 2) the userid. It outputs the AES encrypted token. I need the php equivalent of the same code, but dont know which corresponding php classes are to be used for RNGCryptoServiceProvider,RijndaelManaged,ICryptoTransform,MemoryStream and CryptoStream. • Would firewire networking be better than 100Megabit ethernet?

  My office network has a fully switched 1000Megabit ethernet network. I have an Apple iMac with a Gigabit NIC and FireWire, and a Compaq laptop with a 100Megabit NIC and a 4-pin FireWire interface. Accessing my office's shared drives using my laptop is (obviously) much loswer using my laptop than my iMac. Would I see a noticeible performance boost if I enabled Internet Connection Sharing on my iMac and shared the private ethernet network from my iMac with my laptop over FireWire? FireWire is 480Mbit/sec, right? So would I see roughly 4x speed improvement with such a setup?

  have main office pfsense firewall configured like this: local networks WAN - internet LAN - local network VOIP - IP phones need to connect remote offices (multi-users) and single remote users (from home) use IPSEC or OpenVPN to build "permanent" automatically connecting tunnels from remote location to main location. in remote locations, network will look like this: WAN - internet LAN - local network multiple users VOIP - multiple IP phones in order for the IP phones to work they have to be able to "see" the VOIP network and the VOIP server back at the main office for single remote users ( like from home ) the setup will be similar but only one phone and one computer so questions: best way to tie networks together? IPSEC or OpenVPN can this be setup to automatically connect ? any issues/suggestions with that design/topology ? QoS or issues with running the VOIP traffic over a VPN throughput, quality etc.. obviously depends on remote locations connection to some degree

• PCs using certain IP addresses cannot ping out

  I'm having a very strange problem which I just can't get past. The way our network is set up, we have 2 locations. The main office with all our PCs, and servers/ We are then joined to a local ISP via microwave link and they provide our internet gateway and house an additional storage server for us. All of the network infrastructure is within our office The problem is... When some PCs (and servers) are assigned IP addresses, they cannot ping the gateway or remote server however the remote server can ping the PC. Most of our internal IP addresses work fine but specific ones (e.g. .29) has this problem all the time. There is nothing else using the ip address and no other network problems. When we switch the IP on the PC, it works fine. Please help, I'm going mad. Thanks, Steve

• powerpoint make computer shut down on dell optiplex 760

  At my office we upgraded group of computers to windows 7 + office 2010, few of us have problem that when we work on powerpoint - once in a while the computer suddenly shut down (with out any message). Some of us - has no such problems. We checked and fount that the people who experience problems - use Dell Optiplex 760 PC, and everyone that have no problems use other models. We also found out that the processors of the 760's are not the same - some are Intel E7400 and one is Intel E8400, so I suspect that maybe the mother board is the problem Does any one no this problem? • How to fix wrong icons of the files in Windows XP SP3

  Hi everybody, Recently I deleted some folders from *C:\Windows* directory with file names like this: $some_name_Uninstall$, which are the files of the patches, which were installed on the OS. It seems like my office placed the icons in some of those folders and now all xls and doc files have no icon. (I mean no Office icon) I couldn't find a solution for this till now. Please advice if someone had such problem and/or knows the solution. p.s. I have 7 years experience with Windows XP, so please don't ask me to do simple things like associate with files again or something like that. I tried a lot of things. Uninstall and install is not a way out. Thanks for any information!

  Hello I am trying to Burn a disk let me catch you up where I am at as I have a very SPECIFIC question and it may be difficult to explain but I will try to keep it simple: I have software already in an ISO file; I am using Daemon tools on a Windows based PC What I am wanting to do is create the actual Picture (not disk image file) that will show up on the Disk drive when I insert the disk Eg: if you put microsoft Office 11 in your comp. you open up My Computer to view all your HD and Disk drives you will see the image that microsoft put on the disk which is a silver CD and the Microsoft Office logo on the top corner. I would like to know how to edit my current ISO file or what I need to do in order to put "A PICTURE" or "AN ICON FILE" on the CD/DVD so that when I insert the disk into any PC it will show up with the PICTURE OR ICON file I chose and look proffessional. • How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • jQuery ajax() function is ignoring dataType parameter in Firefox

  I'm trying to use jQuery.ajax() to fetch some html, but Firefox is giving me a "junk after document element" error message. As explained here and here the problem seems to be that Firefox is expecting XML from the server, and when it doesn't parse correctly it throws the error. Here's my ajax code: jQuery.ajax({ url: name, dataType: "html", success: function(result) { console.log(result); }, error: function (jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) { console.log(errorThrown); } }); The server returns the html with these response headers: Accept-Ranges bytes Content-Length 2957 Last-Modified Tue, 02 Jul 2013 16:16:59 GMT Note that there's no content-type header. I'm sure that adding one would solve the problem, but that's not an option. The real problem is that Firefox appears to be ignoring the dataType: parameter in the ajax call. I've also tried adding contentType: and accepts: parameters, but it doesn't help. What am I missing here? How do I force Firefox to process the response as plain text?

• VPN Network intermittantly fails to provide internet: What could be possible causes

  We have a small office with our own VPN setup. We occasionally experience failures in our internet connection where we cannot access the internet. Most of the time the internet connection will resume by itself(without me doing anything) after a period of time(10 mins). Would you be able to suggest possible causes of the connection failure so I can then go and run some tests? Our network architecture is like so: A 'Billion' brand router that is connected to the internet via phone cable and then connected to our Cisco Switch A Cisco Switch/Bus which is connected to all our office nodes, our external harddrive and also to our router as stated above. All connections are via ethernet cable A series of work computers(nodes) connected via ethernet cable to the Cisco switch. Our ISP is TPG Australia We have a Virtual Private Network All the ethernet cables are about 3 years old Do you think that the causes of our intermittant connection problems could be due to the following: Data collisions in the ethernet cables Old/Faulty ethernet cables Our ISP has bad service Can you think of any other causes of the problem?
