  • How to use Event notification in Solaris 10 when a directory change

    - by user357594
I read the following page: Robert Benson's article on ECF developers.sun.com/solaris/articles/event_completion.html I also read the Solaris man pages but they are not very clear of how to use event notifications for directories. For example, If I add a new file into a directory, I would like to get some notification of that event. I found this link: blogs.sun.com/praks/entry/file_events_notification Which has what I need but it is for Solaris 11 ( which is not in the market yet). Based on the link below, I don't want to use poll because I want to get the performance advantage of events. blogs.sun.com/dap/entry/event_ports_and_performance Any suggestion is highly appreciated! -Armando.

  • facebook with openid

    - by Stacey
Referencing http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1827997/is-facebook-an-openid-provider here. This is kind of an additional question based on it. I have also read the article at : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2264266/what-is-the-openid-url-of-facebook - but I am still pretty confused on the whole ordeal. The goal is for people who use facebook to easily login to our website, not to neccessarily integrate with facebook and add things to it (yet). I have read the documentation on facebook connect and am still having trouble grasping exactly what we need to do to accomplish this. I notice that it says that facebook accepts openid logins - so in theory someone with a facebook account could login to a site that took other openid logins, correct? Or do I have to code a separate 'facebookconnect' system just to accept logins from facebook accounts?

  • data directory in automake

    - by Alex Farber
I have some data files that should be distributed with my program. Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in Makefile.am, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only. How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.

  • Error using CreateFileMapping - C

    - by Jamie Keeling
Hello, I am using the tutorial on this MSDN link to implement a way of transferring data from one process to another. Although I was advised in an earlier question to use the Pipe methods, due to certain constraints I have no choice but to use the CreateFileMapping method. Now, i've succesfully managed to make two seperate window form projects within the same solution and by editing some properties both of the forms load at the same time. Furthermore I have managed to implement the code given in the MSDN sample into the first (Producer) and second (Consumer) program without any compilation errors. The problem I am having now is when I run the first program and try to create the handle to the mapped file, I am given an error saying it was unsuccesful and I do not understand why this is happening. I have added both the Producer and Consumer code files to demonstrate what I am trying to do. Producer: #include <windows.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <conio.h> //File header definitions #define IDM_FILE_ROLLDICE 1 #define IDM_FILE_QUIT 2 #define BUF_SIZE 256 TCHAR szName[]=TEXT("Global\\MyFileMappingObject"); TCHAR szMsg[]=TEXT("Message from first process!"); void AddMenus(HWND); LRESULT CALLBACK WindowFunc(HWND, UINT, WPARAM, LPARAM); ////Standard windows stuff - omitted to save space. ////////////////////// // WINDOWS FUNCTION // ////////////////////// LRESULT CALLBACK WindowFunc(HWND hMainWindow, UINT message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { WCHAR buffer[256]; LPCTSTR pBuf; struct DiceData storage; HANDLE hMapFile; switch(message) { case WM_CREATE: { // Create Menus AddMenus(hMainWindow); } break; case WM_COMMAND: // Intercept menu choices switch(LOWORD(wParam)) { case IDM_FILE_ROLLDICE: { //Roll dice and store results in variable //storage = RollDice(); ////Copy results to buffer //swprintf(buffer,255,L"Dice 1: %d, Dice 2: %d",storage.dice1,storage.dice2); ////Show via message box //MessageBox(hMainWindow,buffer,L"Dice Result",MB_OK); hMapFile = CreateFileMapping( (HANDLE)0xFFFFFFFF, // use paging file NULL, // default security PAGE_READWRITE, // read/write access 0, // maximum object size (high-order DWORD) BUF_SIZE, // maximum object size (low-order DWORD) szName); // name of mapping object if (hMapFile == NULL) { MessageBox(hMainWindow,L"Could not create file mapping object",L"Error",NULL); return 1; } pBuf = (LPTSTR) MapViewOfFile(hMapFile, // handle to map object FILE_MAP_ALL_ACCESS, // read/write permission 0, 0, BUF_SIZE); if (pBuf == NULL) { MessageBox(hMainWindow,L"Could not map view of file",L"Error",NULL); CloseHandle(hMapFile); return 1; } CopyMemory((PVOID)pBuf, szMsg, (_tcslen(szMsg) * sizeof(TCHAR))); _getch(); UnmapViewOfFile(pBuf); CloseHandle(hMapFile); } break; case IDM_FILE_QUIT: SendMessage(hMainWindow, WM_CLOSE, 0, 0); break; } break; case WM_DESTROY: PostQuitMessage(0); break; } return DefWindowProc(hMainWindow, message, wParam, lParam); } // //Setup menus // Consumer: #include <windows.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <conio.h> //File header definitions #define IDM_FILE_QUIT 1 #define IDM_FILE_POLL 2 #define BUF_SIZE 256 TCHAR szName[]=TEXT("Global\\MyFileMappingObject"); //Prototypes void AddMenus(HWND); LRESULT CALLBACK WindowFunc(HWND, UINT, WPARAM, LPARAM); //More standard windows creation, again omitted. ////////////////////// // WINDOWS FUNCTION // ////////////////////// LRESULT CALLBACK WindowFunc(HWND hMainWindow, UINT message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { HANDLE hMapFile; LPCTSTR pBuf; switch(message) { case WM_CREATE: { // Create Menus AddMenus(hMainWindow); break; } case WM_COMMAND: { // Intercept menu choices switch(LOWORD(wParam)) { case IDM_FILE_POLL: { hMapFile = OpenFileMapping( FILE_MAP_ALL_ACCESS, // read/write access FALSE, // do not inherit the name szName); // name of mapping object if (hMapFile == NULL) { MessageBox(hMainWindow,L"Could not open file mapping object",L"Error",NULL); return 1; } pBuf = (LPTSTR) MapViewOfFile(hMapFile, // handle to map object FILE_MAP_ALL_ACCESS, // read/write permission 0, 0, BUF_SIZE); if (pBuf == NULL) { MessageBox(hMainWindow,L"Could not map view of file",L"Error",NULL); CloseHandle(hMapFile); return 1; } MessageBox(NULL, pBuf, TEXT("Process2"), MB_OK); UnmapViewOfFile(pBuf); CloseHandle(hMapFile); break; } case IDM_FILE_QUIT: SendMessage(hMainWindow, WM_CLOSE, 0, 0); break; } break; } case WM_DESTROY: { PostQuitMessage(0); break; } } return DefWindowProc(hMainWindow, message, wParam, lParam); } // //Setup menus // It's by no means tidy and final but it's just a start, thanks for any help.

  • simple python file writing question

    - by aharon
I'm learning Python, and have run into a bit of a problem. On my OSX install of Python 3.1, this happens in the console: >>> filename = "test" >>> reader = open(filename, 'r') >>> writer = open(filename, 'w') >>> reader.read() '' >>> writer.write("hello world\n") 12 >>> reader.read() '' And calling more test in BASH confirms that there is nothing in test. What's going on? Thanks.

  • Embedded strongly-typed views with ASP.NET MVC

    - by Brian Vallelunga
I'm working on a plugin-type of system for ASP.NET MVC that loads views from an embedded assembly. I have created a VirtualPathProvider that does the work of retrieving out of the assembly. Everything is working fine except for strongly-typed views. Whenever I try to load one of those, I get an exception of: Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage'. The problem is that there is no Web.config file under the Views folder. Well, actually there is, but the system doesn't seem to want to read the embedded version. If I manually create the file under the corresponding directory in the web app, everything is fine. This isn't an acceptable workaround however, as each plugin would need its own file in its own specific directory. Does anyone know how I might get ASP to read the embedded Web.config file? Thanks, Brian

  • scheduled task or windows service

    - by czuroski
Hello, I have to create an app that will read in some info from a db, process the data, write changes back to the db, and then send an email with these changes to some users or groups. I will be writing this in c#, and this process must be run once a week at a particular time. This will be running on a Windows 2008 Server. In the past, I would always go the route of creating a windows service with a timer and setting the time/day for it to be run in the app.config file so that it can be changed and only have to be restarted to catch the update. Recently, though, I have seen blog posts and such that recommend writing a console application and then using a scheduled task to execute it. I have read many posts talking to this very issue, but have not seen a definitive answer about which process is better. What do any of you think? Thanks for any thoughts.

  • Saving image to database as varbinary, arraylength (part 2)

    - by Thomas Schoof
This is a followup to my previous question, which got solved (thank you for that) but now I am stuck at another error. I'm trying to save an image in my database (called 'Afbeelding'), for that I made a table which excists of: id: int souce: varbinary(max) I then created a wcf service to save an 'Afbeelding' to the database. private static DataClassesDataContext dc = new DataClassesDataContext(); [OperationContract] public void setAfbeelding(Afbeelding a) { //Afbeelding a = new Afbeelding(); //a.id = 1; //a.source = new Binary(bytes); dc.Afbeeldings.InsertOnSubmit(a); dc.SubmitChanges(); } I then put a reference to the service in my project and when I press the button I try to save it to the datbase. private void btnUpload_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Afbeelding a = new Afbeelding(); OpenFileDialog openFileDialog = new OpenFileDialog(); openFileDialog.Filter = "JPEG files|*.jpg"; if (openFileDialog.ShowDialog() == true) { //string imagePath = openFileDialog.File.Name; //FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(imagePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); //byte[] buffer = new byte[fileStream.Length]; //fileStream.Read(buffer, 0, (int)fileStream.Length); //fileStream.Close(); Stream stream = (Stream)openFileDialog.File.OpenRead(); Byte[] bytes = new Byte[stream.Length]; stream.Read(bytes, 0, (int)stream.Length); string fileName = openFileDialog.File.Name; a.id = 1; a.source = new Binary { Bytes = bytes }; } EditAfbeeldingServiceClient client = new EditAfbeeldingServiceClient(); client.setAfbeeldingCompleted +=new EventHandler<System.ComponentModel.AsyncCompletedEventArgs>(client_setAfbeeldingCompleted); client.setAfbeeldingAsync(a); } void client_setAfbeeldingCompleted(object sender, System.ComponentModel.AsyncCompletedEventArgs e) { if (e.Error != null) txtEmail.Text = e.Error.ToString(); else MessageBox.Show("WIN"); } However, when I do this, I get the following error: System.ServiceModel.FaultException: The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter :a. The InnerException message was 'There was an error deserializing the object of type OndernemersAward.Web.Afbeelding. The maximum array length quota (16384) has been exceeded while reading XML data. • Opening Office 2007 Documents from in memory storage - How?

    - by John S
Hi there, I'm a C++ developer wrestling with updating an application that had made extensive use of the IStorage interface to open pre-Office 2007 documents from in-memory storage (via ILockBytes). If you are still following me so far, you probably know that the new Office Document formats are incompatible with IStorage containers. The application I'm trying to update, relied upon the IPersistStorage interface that all Office applications have, and the code as written calls the load method of IPersistStorage to read in a document from IStorage interface. So the question is.... What kind of COM interfaces are available to me to read in, from an in memory container, an Office 2007 document? John "S"

  • Do you have any tips for comments to keep them in step with the code? [closed]

    - by Rob Wells
Possible Duplicate: How do you like your comments? G'day, I've read both of Steve McConnell's excellent Code Complete books "Code Complete" and "Code Complete 2" and was wondering if people have any other suggestions for commenting code. My commenting mantra could be summed up by the basic idea of expressing "what the code below cannot say". While enjoying this interesting blog post by Jeff about commenting I was still left wondering "When coding, when do you feel a comment is required?" Edit: Oops. Seems to be a duplicate of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/121945/how-do-you-like-your-comments so sorry for the noise. Thanks to my, seemingly, SO shadow for pointing it out - wouldn't have thought I was that interesting. Now off to read the original post and see if it is relevant. Edit: I meant to emphasise the best appraoch to ensure that your comments will stay in step with the code. Maybe expressing an intent rather than the mechansim for instance.

  • Recommendations for a C++ polymorphic, seekable, binary I/O interface

    - by Trevor Robinson
    I've been using std::istream and ostream as a polymorphic interface for random-access binary I/O in C++, but it seems suboptimal in numerous ways: 64-bit seeks are non-portable and error-prone due to streampos/streamoff limitations; currently using boost/iostreams/positioning.hpp as a workaround, but it requires vigilance Missing operations such as truncating or extending a file (ala POSIX ftruncate) Inconsistency between concrete implementations; e.g. stringstream has independent get/put positions whereas filestream does not Inconsistency between platform implementations; e.g. behavior of seeking pass the end of a file or usage of failbit/badbit on errors Don't need all the formatting facilities of stream or possibly even the buffering of streambuf streambuf error reporting (i.e. exceptions vs. returning an error indicator) is supposedly implementation-dependent in practice I like the simplified interface provided by the Boost.Iostreams Device concept, but it's provided as function templates rather than a polymorphic class. (There is a device class, but it's not polymorphic and is just an implementation helper class not necessarily used by the supplied device implementations.) I'm primarily using large disk files, but I really want polymorphism so I can easily substitute alternate implementations (e.g. use stringstream instead of fstream for unit tests) without all the complexity and compile-time coupling of deep template instantiation. Does anyone have any recommendations of a standard approach to this? It seems like a common situation, so I don't want to invent my own interfaces unnecessarily. As an example, something like java.nio.FileChannel seems ideal. My best solution so far is to put a thin polymorphic layer on top of Boost.Iostreams devices. For example: class my_istream { public: virtual std::streampos seek(stream_offset off, std::ios_base::seekdir way) = 0; virtual std::streamsize read(char* s, std::streamsize n) = 0; virtual void close() = 0; }; template <class T> class boost_istream : public my_istream { public: boost_istream(const T& device) : m_device(device) { } virtual std::streampos seek(stream_offset off, std::ios_base::seekdir way) { return boost::iostreams::seek(m_device, off, way); } virtual std::streamsize read(char* s, std::streamsize n) { return boost::iostreams::read(m_device, s, n); } virtual void close() { boost::iostreams::close(m_device); } private: T m_device; };

  • How sophisticated should be DAL?

    - by Andrew Florko
Basically, DAL (Data Access Layer) should provide simple CRUD (Create/Read/Update/Delete) methods but I always have a temptation to create more sophisticated methods in order to minimize database access roundtrips from Business Logic Layer. What do you think about following extensions to CRUD (most of them are OK I suppose): Read: GetById, GetByName, GetPaged, GetByFilter... e.t.c. methods Create: GetOrCreate methods (model entity is returned from DB or created if not found and returned), Create(lots-of-relations) instead of Create and multiple AssignTo methods calls Update: Merge methods (entities list are updated, created and deleted in one call) Delete: Delete(bool children) - optional children delete, Cleanup methods Where do you usually implement Entity Cache capabilities? DAL or BLL? (My choice is BLL, but I have seen DAL implementations also) Where is the boundary when you decide: this operation is too specific so I should implement it in Business Logic Layer as DAL multiple calls? I often found insufficient BLL operations that were implemented in dozen database roundtrips because developer was afraid to create a bit more sophisticated DAL. Thank you in advance!

  • Android USB Host Communication

    - by Kip Russell
    I'm working on a project that utilizes the USB Host capabilities in Android 3.2. I'm suffering from a deplorable lack of knowledge and talent regarding USB/Serial communication in general. I'm also unable to find any good example code for what I need to do. I need to read from a USB Communication Device. Ex: When I connect via Putty (on my PC) I enter: >GO And the device starts spewing out data for me. Pitch/Roll/Temp/Checksum. Ex: $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.987T26.3*61 $R1.217P-0.986T26.3*60 $R1.217P-0.985T26.3*63 I can send the initial 'GO' command from the Android device at which time I receive an echo of 'GO'. Then nothing else on any subsequent reads. How can I: 1) Send the 'go' command. 2) Read in the stream of data that results. The USB device I'm working with has the following interfaces (endpoints). Device Class: Communication Device (0x2) Interfaces: Interface #0 Class: Communication Device (0x2) Endpoint #0 Direction: Inbound (0x80) Type: Intrrupt (0x3) Poll Interval: 255 Max Packet Size: 32 Attributes: 000000011 Interface #1 Class: Communication Device Class (CDC) (0xa) Endpoint #0 Address: 129 Number: 1 Direction: Inbound (0x80) Type: Bulk (0x2) Poll Interval (0) Max Packet Size: 32 Attributes: 000000010 Endpoint #1 Address: 2 Number: 2 Direction: Outbound (0x0) Type: Bulk (0x2) Poll Interval (0) Max Packet Size: 32 Attributes: 000000010 I'm able to deal with permission, connect to the device, find the correct interface and assign the endpoints. I'm just having trouble figuring out which technique to use to send the initial command read the ensuing data. I'm tried different combinations of bulkTransfer and controlTransfer with no luck. Thanks. I'm using interface#1 as seen below: public AcmDevice(UsbDeviceConnection usbDeviceConnection, UsbInterface usbInterface) { Preconditions.checkState(usbDeviceConnection.claimInterface(usbInterface, true)); this.usbDeviceConnection = usbDeviceConnection; UsbEndpoint epOut = null; UsbEndpoint epIn = null; // look for our bulk endpoints for (int i = 0; i < usbInterface.getEndpointCount(); i++) { UsbEndpoint ep = usbInterface.getEndpoint(i); Log.d(TAG, "EP " + i + ": " + ep.getType()); if (ep.getType() == UsbConstants.USB_ENDPOINT_XFER_BULK) { if (ep.getDirection() == UsbConstants.USB_DIR_OUT) { epOut = ep; } else if (ep.getDirection() == UsbConstants.USB_DIR_IN) { epIn = ep; } } } if (epOut == null || epIn == null) { throw new IllegalArgumentException("Not all endpoints found."); } AcmReader acmReader = new AcmReader(usbDeviceConnection, epIn); AcmWriter acmWriter = new AcmWriter(usbDeviceConnection, epOut); reader = new BufferedReader(acmReader); writer = new BufferedWriter(acmWriter); }

  • How to maxmise the largest contiguous block of memory in the Large Object Heap

    - by Unsliced
The situation is that I am making a WCF call to a remote server which is returns an XML document as a string. Most of the time this return value is a few K, sometimes a few dozen K, very occasionally a few hundred K, but very rarely it could be several megabytes (first problem is that there is no way for me to know). It's these rare occasions that are causing grief. I get a stack trace that starts: System.OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown. at System.Xml.BufferBuilder.AddBuffer() at System.Xml.BufferBuilder.AppendHelper(Char* pSource, Int32 count) at System.Xml.BufferBuilder.Append(Char[] value, Int32 start, Int32 count) at System.Xml.XmlTextReaderImpl.ParseText() at System.Xml.XmlTextReaderImpl.ParseElementContent() at System.Xml.XmlTextReaderImpl.Read() at System.Xml.XmlTextReader.Read() at System.Xml.XmlReader.ReadElementString() at Microsoft.Xml.Serialization.GeneratedAssembly.XmlSerializationReaderMDRQuery.Read2_getMarketDataResponse() at Microsoft.Xml.Serialization.GeneratedAssembly.ArrayOfObjectSerializer2.Deserialize(XmlSerializationReader reader) at System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer.Deserialize(XmlReader xmlReader, String encodingStyle, XmlDeserializationEvents events) at System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer.Deserialize(XmlReader xmlReader, String encodingStyle) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.ReadResponse(SoapClientMessage message, WebResponse response, Stream responseStream, Boolean asyncCall) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.Invoke(String methodName, Object[] parameters) I've read around and it is because the Large Object Heap is just getting too fragmented, so even preceding the call with a quick check to StringBuilder.EnsureCapacity just causes the OutOfMemoryException to be thrown earlier (and because I'm guessing at what's needed, it might not actually need that much so my check is causing more problems than it is solving). Some opinions are that there's not much I can do about it. Some of the questions I've asked myself: Use less memory - have you checked for leaks? Yes. The memory usage goes up and down, but there's no fundamental growth that guarantees this to happen. Some of the times it fails, it succeeded at that stage previously. Transfer smaller amounts Not an option, this is a third party web service over which I have no control (or at least it would take a long time to resolve, in the meantime I still have a problem) Can you do something to the LOH to make it less likely to fail? ... now this is most fruitful course. It's a 32-bit process (it has to be for various political, technical and boring reasons) but there's normally hundreds of meg free (multiples of the largest amount for which we've seen failures). Can we monitor the LOH? Using perfmon I can track the size of the heaps, but I don't think there's a way to monitor the largest available contiguous block of memory. Question is: any advice or suggestions for things to try?

  • Webapp: safetly update a shared List/Map in the AppContext

    - by al nik
I've Lists and Maps in my WebAppContext. Most of the time these are only read by multiple Threads but sometimes there's the need to update or add some data. I'm wondering what's the best way to do this without incurring in a ConcurrentModificationException. I think that using CopyOnWriteArrayList I can achieve what I want in terms of - I do not have to sync on every read operation- I can safety update the list while other threads are reading it. Is this the best solution? What about Maps?

  • Grails / GORM, Disable First-level Cache

    - by Stephen Swensen
Suppose I have the following Domain class mapping to a legacy table, utilizing read-only second-level cache, and having a transient field: class DomainObject { static def transients = ['userId'] Long id Long userId static mapping = { cache usage: 'read-only' table 'SOME_TABLE' } } I have a problem, references to DomainObject are being shared due to first-level caching, and thus transient fields are writing over each other. For example, def r1 = DomainObject.get(1) r1.userId = 22 def r2 = DomainObject.get(1) r2.userId = 34 assert r1.userId == 34 That is, r1 and r2 are references to the same instance. This is undesirable, I would like to cache the table data without sharing references. Any ideas? [Edit] Understanding the situation better now, I believe my question boils down to the following: Is there anyway to disable first level cache for a specific domain class while still using second level cache?

My script should work with this: http://wincode.org/%D0%BF%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BC%D0%BC%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5/ If I'll use this in browser it would replaced into normal symbols, but urllib code fails with 404 error. How to decode correctly this url? When I'm using that url directly in code, like address = 'that address', it works perfect. But I used parsing page for getting this url. I have a list of urls which contents cyrillic. Maybe they have uncorrect encoding? Here is more code: requestData = urllib2.Request( %SOME_ADDRESS%, None, {"User-Agent": user_agent}) requestHandler = pageHandler.open(requestData) pageData = requestHandler.read().decode('utf-8') soupHandler = BeautifulSoup(pageData) topicLinks = [] for postBlock in soupHandler.findAll('a', href=re.compile('%SOME_REGEXP%')): topicLinks.append(postBlock['href']) postAddress = choice(topicLinks) postRequestData = urllib2.Request(postAddress, None, {"User-Agent": user_agent}) postHandler = pageHandler.open(postRequestData) postData = postHandler.read() File "/usr/lib/python2.6/urllib2.py", line 518, in http_error_default raise HTTPError(req.get_full_url(), code, msg, hdrs, fp) urllib2.HTTPError: HTTP Error 404: Not Found

  • java.util.zip - ZipInputStream v.s. ZipFile

    - by lucho
Hello, community! I have some general questions regarding the java.util.zip library. What we basically do is an import and an export of many small components. Previously these components were imported and exported using a single big file, e.g.: <component-type-a id="1"/> <component-type-a id="2"/> <component-type-a id="N"/> <component-type-b id="1"/> <component-type-b id="2"/> <component-type-b id="N"/> Please note that the order of the components during import is relevant. Now every component should occupy its own file which should be externally versioned, QA-ed, bla, bla. We decided that the output of our export should be a zip file (with all these files in) and the input of our import should be a similar zip file. We do not want to explode the zip in our system. We do not want opening separate streams for each of the small files. My current questions: Q1. May the ZipInputStream guarantee that the zip entries (the little files) will be read in the same order in which they were inserted by our export that uses ZipOutputStream? I assume reading is something like: ZipInputStream zis = new ZipInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(fis)); ZipEntry entry; while((entry = zis.getNextEntry()) != null) { //read from zis until available } I know that the central zip directory is put at the end of the zip file but nevertheless the file entries inside have sequential order. I also know that relying on the order is an ugly idea but I just want to have all the facts in mind. Q2. If I use ZipFile (which I prefer) what is the performance impact of calling getInputStream() hundreds of times? Will it be much slower than the ZipInputStream solution? The zip is opened only once and ZipFile is backed by RandomAccessFile - is this correct? I assume reading is something like: ZipFile zipfile = new ZipFile(argv[0]); Enumeration e = zipfile.entries();//TODO: assure the order of the entries while(e.hasMoreElements()) { entry = (ZipEntry) e.nextElement(); is = zipfile.getInputStream(entry)); } Q3. Are the input streams retrieved from the same ZipFile thread safe (e.g. may I read different entries in different threads simultaneously)? Any performance penalties? Thanks for your answers!
