    I am unable to create a working executable file by running the make command in a tree previously built on an i386 machine. I'm getting an error message in the form of me@me-desktop:~$ make /usr/bin/ld: i386 architecture of input file `../.. /Lib/libProgram.a(something.o)' is incompatible with i386:x86-64 output I've been told and reassured that this program has been tested and successfully compiled on 64-bit Fedora.   • Hashing 3D position into 2D position

    I am doing volumetric raycasting and curently working on depth jitter. I have 3D position on ray and want to sample 2D noise texture to jitter the depth. Function for converting (or hashing) 3D position to 2D have to produce absolutely different numbers for a little changes (especialy because i am sampling in texture space so sample values differs very very little) and have to be "shader-wise" - so forget about branches, cycles etc. I'm looking forward for yours nice and fast solutions.

  • UDF Partition reported full when it is not

    I was using these instructions to setup an external hard disk with udf. I have been able to setup a multi-partition system using those instructions, but I seem to have hit a wall, where the partition is reported as full while writing to the disk. Every other tool available to me reports it as free. Relevant lshw output Here's a screenshot showing the disk: Both the output of df and the file manager (caja) report the disk as free. The most weird part is that on mounting it Windows, Windows can write to the disk easily, and the writes are being read fine back in Ubuntu. However, the used-bytes remains at 34719248K in Ubuntu (It goes higher on Windows, however).

  • How to reduce disk thrashing (paging)?

    I have 4 GB of RAM, but Windows still thrashes disk sometimes (especially often when an application is minimized for some time and then I activate it again). Completely stupid, because Task Manager shows 2 GB of RAM are free. Is there any way to prevent Windows swapping out program memory? I tried setting Superfetch to cache startup files only (it helped a bit) and turning off paging file (it helped much, and worked well for me in Windows XP; but Windows Vista/Windows 7 don't allow that - it shows "low on memory" message frequently, even when I have 1 GB of RAM free.) What can you advise me to do?

  • Automatic Maintenance Jobs in every PDB? New SPM Evolve Advisor Task in Oracle 12.1.0.2

    A customer checking out our slides from the OTN Tour in August 2014 asked me a finicky question the other day: "According to the documentation the Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor maintenance task gets executed only within the CDB$ROOT, but not within each PDB - but the slides are not clear here. So what is the truth?" Ok, that's good question. In my understanding all tasks will get executed within each PDB - that's why we recommend (based on experience) to break up the default maintenance windows when using Oracle Multitenant. Otherwise all PDBs will have the same maintenance windows, and guess what will happen when 25 PDBs start gathering object statistics at the same time ... The documentation indeed says: Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor data is stored in the root. It might have results about SQL statements executed in a PDB that were analyzed by the advisor, but these results are not included if the PDB is unplugged. A common user whose current container is the root can run SQL Tuning Advisor manually for SQL statements from any PDB. When a statement is tuned, it is tuned in any container that runs the statement. This sounds reasonable. But when we have a look into our PDBs or into the CDB_AUTOTASK_CLIENT view the result is different from what the doc says. This new task doesn't appear as a stand-alone job (client) in the maintenance window but runs as a sub-entity of the Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor task.   • What is the "default" software license?

    If I release some code and binaries, but I don't include any license at all with it, what are the legal terms that apply by default (in the US, where I am). I know that I automatically have copyright without doing anything, but what restrictions are there on it? If I upload my code to github and announce it as a free download / contribute at will, then are people allowed to modify and close source my work? I haven't said that they cannot, as a GPL would, but I don't feel that it would by default be acceptable to steal my work either. So what can and cannot people do with code that is freely available, but has absolutely no licensing terms attached? By the way, I know that it would be a good idea for me to pick a license and apply it to my code soon, but I'm still curious about this. Edit Thanks! So it looks like the consensus is that it starts out very restricted, and then my actions imply any further rights. If I just put software on my website with no security, it would be an infringement to download it. If I post a link to that download on a forum, then that would implicitly give permission to use it for free, but not distribute it or its derivatives (but you can modify it for your own use). If I put it on GitHub, then it is conveyed as FOSS. Again, this is probably not codified exactly in law but may be enough to be defensible in court. It's still a good idea to post a complete license to be safe.

  • GUI frontend for octave on Linux

    I recently installed Octave on my Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS box. Out of the box, this is a console only app. This makes the learning curve a bit steeper than what I would like it to be, and I am looking for a GUI frontend that looks more like Matlab. I have seen a few project (QtOctave etc), but most of them seem either discontinued, no longer under active development, or are no longer free. Can anyone recommend a good open source/free GUI for Octave on Linux? Preferably, one that is as close as possible to Matlab's GUI.

    Like the title says. I would love to know how, with VimScript, I can do an if statement, that checks if %Y (for statusline) exists in the current file. This is what I have so far: if expand('%:Y') != "" let filetype=extend('%:Y') let filetype+= ",\ " else let filetype="" endif This is, of course, for my statusline, for which I don't want to show the filetype comma and space if the filetype doesn't exist.   • Evince 3.10 with menubar

    I find that the 2 buttoms menu from the evince v3.10.0 are not really useful. Why did ubuntu NOT re add an menubar?. It would have been looking better in unity ! The unity top panel has enough space for an normal program menu. Here is an screenshot of what i mean: (The program works already in ubuntu 13.10 with unity or cinnamon fine. Some little compiler warnings but nothing more) Example in Cinnamon or in unity

    my computer is running window XP home editon. the avg i am using is expirying soon and so a pop out ask me to install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011. When the download is about to complete, i was ask to reboot the computer, i click "OK". after my computer restart , there was a pop out say "AVG Installer- Error A system restart is required in order to continue with the installation. Please restart your system and try again." Since the only option was "OK" i click it, and restart my computer. After restarting, the same pop-out appear. I could not download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 as the pop-out keep appearing if i run it or uninstall. can anyone help me?? btw my brower is int

(Studies at Rice University have shown this to be the best indentation size.) Is there any truth in these studies?   • External hard drive issue

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and I have a 500GB external hard drive, formatted in ext4, which I have used for about a year to store batches of data that I am sifting through. About once a week I move a chunk of data from the external drive to my internal drive for processing. As I do that I delete the data from the external drive and empty the trash, thereby clearing up space on the external and also preventing myself from grabbing stuff that I've already sorted through. The vast majority of this is text files, but there are a few .jpegs and .mp4s thrown in, if that matters. Anyway, this has been working without a hitch for nearly a year. So today I plug in the drive and I have an odd issue. I was able to move folders from the external over to my internal drive with no problem, but when I tried to delete those files I was unable to do so. I kept getting the "unable to send file to trash, do you wish to delete permanently?" message. I clicked yes / delete all, but no files were actually deleted. It just sat there. Even worse, while the system was trying in vain to delete those files I was unable to move more files over. In short, I was stuck. I canceled the operation, unmounted and remounted the drive, and then I had an even bigger problem. I have a spreadsheet of all the different folders on there ( exactly 818 ) and yet when I opened the drive in Nautilus, it was only finding 512 folders. So I had 306 missing folders, but my free space was unchanged. Immediately I think that the drive may be corrupted. I went into Disk Utility and ran the check disk option. It said that the drive was NOT clean, but offered no remedy or option to repair. I went back into the drive in Nautilus and once again attempted to delete the files I had already moved. Same issue. I clicked on Details and it said that it was unable to create a trashing file I/O error. I've looked, and it's not a permissions issue. The drive and all folders that are in it all belong to me, and they are all read / write. I've started running badblocks on the drive, but it looks like that is going to take several hours to complete. Any ideas?

    I have to record a video to showcase a tool I've made. It's going to include my talking, but I also want some overlay text (subtitles) for people who doesn't have sound. I'm looking for a program that will let me add a text overlay (as subtitle) for my video, and if possible, export it as .flv . I've tried this so far: Used CamStudio for recording, using their lossless format. Converted the .avi file to a .flv using Any Video Converter (free version) I've been having some trouble with the output of CamStudio, some programs can't play the file right, it skips forward and backward. (VLC, Adobe Media Encoder CS4) So I'm looking for a program that accepts videos from CamStudio*, can add text to my video, and hopefully export as flv. *(If that's not possible I'm open for other recording programs). I'd like to ONLY use free programs, and I'm on Windows XP. Looking forward to your help :)
