  • ASP.Net / MySQL : Translating content into several languages

    I have an ASP.Net website which uses a MySQL database for the back end. The website is an English e-commerce system, and we are looking at the possibility of translating it into about five other languages (French, Spanish etc). We will be getting human translators to perform the translation - we've looked at automated services but these aren't good enough. The static text on the site (e.g. headings, buttons etc) can easily be served up in multiple languages via .Net's built in localization features (resx files etc). The thing that I'm not so sure about it how best to store and retrieve the multi-language content in the database. For example, there is a products table that includes these fields... productId (int) categoryId (int) title (varchar) summary (varchar) description (text) features (text) The title, summary, description and features text would need to be available in all the different languages. Here are the two options that I've come up with... Create additional field for each language For example we could have titleEn, titleFr, titleEs etc for all the languages, and repeat this for all text columns. We would then adapt our code to use the appropriate field depending on the language selected. This feels a bit hacky, and also would lead to some very large tables. Also, if we wanted to add additional languages in the future it would be time consuming to add even more columns. Use a lookup table We could create a new table with the following format... textId | languageId | content ------------------------------- 10 | EN | Car 10 | FR | Voiture 10 | ES | Coche 11 | EN | Bike 11 | FR | Vélo We'd then adapt our products table to reference the appropriate textId for the title, summary, description and features instead of having the text stored in the product table. This seems much more elegant, but I can't think of a simple way of getting this data out of the database and onto the page without using complex SQL statements. Of course adding new languages in the future would be very simple compared to the previous option. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions about the best way to achieve this! Is there any "best practice" guidance out there? Has anyone done this before?

  • Do you know of a good program for editing/translating resource (.rc) files?

    I'm building a C++/MFC program in a multilingual environment. I have one main (national) language and three international languages. Every time I add a feature to the program I have to keep the international languages up-to-date with the national one. The resource editor in Visual Studio is not very helpful because I frequently end up leaving a string, dialog box, etc., untranslated. I wonder if you guys know of a program that can edit resource (.rc) files and Build a file that includes only the strings to be translated and their respective IDs and accepts the same (or similar) file in another language (this would be helpful since usually the translation is done by someone else), or Handle the translations itself, allowing to view the same string in different languages at the same time.

  • What are the most frustrating Python hacks to unwind, rewrite, etc.?

    My impression of Python from the short time I've been developing with it is that it's incredible powerful and flexible, but I can't help but feel like "with great power comes great responsibility." So while I've read numerous blog posts about simple and elegant Python snippets that solve a problems, I wonder if there are design patterns or abuses of Python language features that, once built into an application or library, cause the code to be incredibly brittle and near impossible to refactor. So the question is basically what are the most frustrating, but somewhat common, Python "hacks" or language feature abuses that someone can introduce that will cause nightmares for future maintainers of that code?

For example, for an error that occured because the program could not open a file I stroe: F001 "Can not open a file." "The same error message in another language" "The same error message in third language" What is the best way of storing different kind of error messages and codes in a file for c++ programmer in order to use that in a programme fast and easily?   • Problem when reading backslash in Prolog

    I'm writing a lexer in Prolog which will be used as a part of functional language interpreter. Language spec allows expressions like for example let \x = x + 2; to occur. What I want lexer to do for such input is to "return": [tokLet, tokLambda, tokVar(x), tokEq, tokVar(x), tokPlus, tokNumber(2), tokSColon] and the problem is, that Prolog seems to ignore the \ character and "returns" the line written above except for tokLambda. One approach to solve this would be to somehow add second backslash before/after every occurrence of one in the program code (because everything works fine if I change the original input to let \\x = x + 2;) but I don't really like it. Any ideas?

    I am recently thinking about writing self-modifying programs, I think it may be powerful and fun... So I am currently looking for a language that allow modifying program own code easily.. I read about C# and the ability to compile -and execute- code in runtime, but that is too hurting.. I am also thinking about assembly... it is easier there to change running code but it is not very powerful... Can you suggest me a powerful language -or a feature- that support modifying code in runtime..?   • Java and Different Types of Stacks

    Currently the only stack I know anything about is Vector, I normally use this in place of an array but I understand that there is other types of stacks and they all suit different jobs. The project I am currently working on requires me to be inserting objects in a certain position inside a stack, not always the front of the stack and I am under the impression that a Vector may not be the best class for this job. Could somebody please give me a brief description of the other types of stacks available to me with the Java language and their advantages and disadvantages? Are these names homogeneous? E.g. Are they only used in the Java language or are they used as general terms in Computer Science? Thank you

  • SSIS Null Value Questions

    I have a table with 5 string columns, all can be NULLs. After I read the data from this table, I want to convert any null values into empty strings. The reason is that I need to compare these columns with columns in another table of the same schema (using conditional split), and null values would cause the comparison to evaluate to NULL. Is there any functionality in SSIS that allows me to convert NULL's to empty strings, or just not having to deal with NULL's at all?

    I assume arguments to my shell scripts willbe ./x.sh subject N file1 file2 fileN So I am splicing argv from 3 till end candidates=${@:3} now I want to check whether length of candidates is same as given N I am trying with echo $((${#candidates[@]})) which is always returning 1. I can do echo "$#-2" | bc but, I shouldn't I be able to get array size ? I can use bc to do integer comparison. but I've to know the size of `candidates array which I am not getting properly.

  • ExpandoObject (dynamics) my greatest friend or my new greatest foe?

    Yes I know that it shouldn't be abused and that C# is primariy used as a static language. But seriously folks if you could just dirty up some code, in the python style, or create some dynamic do hicky, would you? My mind is working overtime on this having spent a while loving the dynamics of python, is c# going over to the dark side through the back door? Is the argument for static typing a dead one with this obvious addition? Is the argument for less Unit testing a bit silly when we are all grown ups? Or has the addition of dynamics ruined a strongly static typed and well designed language?

    Hello, In my iPhone application, I need to calculate the time difference between the time a message was created on the server, and the time my phone received it. The server (Java) puts in a number returned by System.currentTimeMillis() as metadata along with the message. How do I compare this number with the current time on the device?     So I have my rails application and I have blog posts in my application. For starters I am on rails 2.3.5 and Ruby 1.8.7 For the show page, I am required to give a prev/next link to the prev/next blog post. The catch is that I need to find the next blog where the language column in the database is equal to 'eng'. I had started writing this out in my model and it works but of course this will just find the prev/next record in the database no matter what the language is specified in the column and it will break when the record is not found. def next(lang='eng') BlogEntry.find(self.id - 1) end def prev(lang='eng') BlogEntry.find(self.id + 1) end

    I can have a table and function defined as: CREATE TABLE mytable ( mycol integer ); INSERT INTO mytable VALUES (1); CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol = l_myvar; RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; In this case l_myvar acts as a bind variable for the value passed when I call: SELECT * FROM myfunction(1); and returns the row where mycol = 1 If I redefine the function as: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (l_myvar); RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; SELECT * FROM myfunction(1); still returns the row where mycol = 1 However, if I now change the function definition to allow me to pass an integer array and try to this array in the IN clause, I get an error: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer[]) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (array_to_string(l_myvar, ',')); RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; Analysis reveals that although: SELECT array_to_string(ARRAY[1, 2], ','); returns 1,2 as expected SELECT * FROM myfunction(ARRAY[1, 2]); returns the error operator does not exist: integer = text at the line: WHERE mycol IN (array_to_string(l_myvar, ',')); If I execute: SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (1,2); I get the expected result. Given that array_to_string(l_myvar, ',') evaluates to 1,2 as shown, why arent these statements equivalent. From the error message it is something to do with datatypes, but doesnt the IN(variable) construct appear to be behaving differently from the = variable construct? What are the rules here? I know that I could build a statement to EXECUTE, treating everything as a string, to achieve what I want to do, so I am not looking for that as a solution. I do want to understand though what is going on in this example. Is there a modification to this approach to make it work, the particular example being to pass in an array of values to build a dynamic IN clause without resorting to EXECUTE?     Why does <xsl:if test="<XPATH to boolean value here>"> ... </xsl:if> ALWAYS return true? Since boolean can be 0,1,"false" and "true" by definition, the ONLY way to test for a boolean value is to do string comparison against these. This can't be right.

    In C#4.0, we have dynamic type, but how to invoke static method of dynamic type object? Below code will generate exception at run time. class Foo { public static int Sum(int x, int y) { return x + y; } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { dynamic d = new Foo(); Console.WriteLine(d.Sum(1, 3)); } } IMHO, dynamic is invented to bridge C# and other programming language. There is some other language (e.g. Java) allows to invoke static method through object instead of type. BTW, The introduction of C#4.0 is not so impressive compared to C#3.0.

  • Visual studio 2010 colourizers, intellisense and the rest. Where to start!!

    Ok, before I begin I realize that there is a lot of documentation on this subject but I have thus far failed to get even basic colourization working for VS2010. My goal is to simply get to a point where I can open a document and everything is coloured red, from here I can implement the relevant parsing logic. Here's what I have tried/found: 1) Downloaded all the relevent SDK's and such- Found the ook sample (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/ookLanguage) - didn't build, didn't work. 2) Knowing almost nothing about MEF read through "Implementing a Language Service By Using the Managed Package Framework" - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb166533(v=VS.100).aspx This was pretty much a copy and paste of all the basic stuff here, and also updating some references which were out of date with the sample see: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vsx/thread/a310fe67-afd2-4592-b295-3fc86fec7996 Now, I have got to a point where when running the package MEF appears to have hooked up correctly (I know this because with the debugger open I can see that the packages initialize and FDoIdle methods are being hit). When I open a file of the extension I have registered with the ProvideLanguageExtensionAttribute everything dies as if in an endless loop, yet no debug symbols hit (though they are loaded). Looking at the ook sample and the MEF examples they seem to be totally different approaches to the same problem. In the ook sample there are notions of Clasifications and Completion controllers which aren't mentioned in the MEF example. Also, they don't seem to create a Package or Language service, so I have no idea how it should work? With the MEF example, my assumption is that I need to hook into the "IScanner.ScanTokenAndProvideInfoAboutIt" to provide syntax highlighting? Which would be fine if I could ever hit this method. So my first question I guess is which approach should I be taking here? Or do they both somehow tie together? My second questions is, where can I find a basic fully working project that implements bog standard basic syntax highlighting and intellisense or VS2010? Thirdly, in the MEF example when I created a Package there were a bunch of test projects created for me. I appears that the integration tests launch the VS2010 test rig somehow, but the test fails. It would be good to write my service with tests but I have no idea what/how I can test each interaction so any references to testing Language services would be helpful. Finally, please throw any resource/book links my way that I may find useful. Cheers, Chris. N.B. Sorry I realize this is part question part rant, but I have never been so confused.

    Hi everyone! Im new here and also new to developing software and programming, and with new I mean 0 experience or schooling for it. As Im currently studying medicine via internet and I use a computer on an average of about 8-9 hours a day, this has lead me to get very interested in programming.
