  • Juju didn't configure rabbitmq for openstack?

    I have installed ubuntu Openstack HA with juju with all 24 servers. But my openstack is not working at all. On dashboard on every page I get errors saying "could not retrieve usage information", "could not retrieve volume information, "could not retrieve .....etc I spent hours and have discovered that juju has not done configuration correctly. I found that on cloud controller in nova.conf juju has added rabitmq vhost enrty, but that virtual host is not added in rabbitmq. Then how is its suppose to work? And on juju-gui canvas rabbimq is all green and is working fine, which in reality its not. I am really wondering if juju has really done correct configuration in all 24 servers now, I am getting the feeling that it would have been faster if I would have done openstack deployment manually instead of using juju. Why was the virtual host entry not added in rabbitmq? How should I solve this?

I am not using MVC but lately learned that Azure only supports ASP.NET MVC applications. I want to know whether ASP.NET Web Forms application work on Azure/AppHarbor or not. Do I need to convert this application to MVC if Web Forms is not supported? Will the same application run on Intranet as well?

  • Using Resources the Right Way

    It’s an interesting time in computing technology. At one point there was a dearth of information available for solving a given problem, or educating ourselves on broader topics so that we can solve problems in the future. With dozens, perhaps hundreds or thousands of web sites and content available (for free, in many cases) from vendors, peers, even colleges and universities, it seems like there is actually too much information. Who has the time to absorb all this information and training? Even if you had the inclination, where to start? In fact, it seems so overwhelming that I often hear people saying that they can’t find the training they need, or that vendor X or Y “doesn’t help their users”. On questioning these folks, however, I often find that they – and sometimes I - haven’t put in the effort to learn what resources we have. That’s where blogs, like this one, can help. If you follow a blog, either by checking it often or perhaps subscribing to the Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed, you’ll be able to spread out the search or create a mental filter for the information you need. But it’s not enough just read a blog or a web page. The creators need real feedback – what doesn’t work, and what does. Yes, you’re allowed to tell a vendor or writer “This helped me because…” so that you reinforce the positives. To be sure, bring up what doesn’t work as well –  that’s fine. But be specific, and be constructive. You’d be surprised at how much it matters. I know for a fact at Microsoft we listen – there is a real live person that reads your comments. I’m sure this is true of other vendors, and I also know that most blog authors – yours truly most especially – wants to know what you think.   In this blog entry I’d to call your attention to three resources you have at your disposal, and how you can use them to help. I’ll try to bring up things like this from time to time that I find useful, and cover in them in more depth like this. Think of this as a synopsis of a longer set of resources that you can use to filter whether you want to research further, bookmark, or forward on to a circle of friends where you think it might help them.   Data Driven Design Concepts http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/jj156154 I’ll start with a great site that walks you through the process of designing a solution from a data-first perspective. As you know, I believe all computing is merely re-arranging data. If you follow that logic as well, you’ll realize that whenever you create a solution, you should start at the data-end of the application. This resource helps you do that. Even if you don’t use the specific technologies the instructions use, the concepts hold for almost any other technology that deals with data. This should be a definite bookmark for a developer, DBA, or Data Architect. When I mentioned my admiration for this resource here at Microsoft, the team that created it contacted me and asked if I’d share an e-mail address to my readers so that you can comment on it. You’re guaranteed to be heard – you can suggest changes, talk about how useful – or not – it is, and so on. I also like having ready-made, live, functional demos that show the completed solution at work. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how a complex, complete, hybrid application that bridges on-premises systems with cloud-based databases, code, functions and more, this is it. It’s a stock-trading simulator, and you can get everything from the design to the code itself, or you can just play with the application. It’s running on Windows Azure, the actual production servers we use for everything else. If you’re a developer, this is a style of code you need to understand for everything from iPhone development to a full Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) environment. So check out these resources.   • What is the current legal status of magnet links?

    Prelude: I develop a cloud service which could be described as dropbox meets torrents and as side effect it enables distribution of arbitrary content via magnet links. Certain amount of magnet links will be displayed on the main website (I will be able to remove them one-by-one or ban users but no more). I will not be able to avoid magnets without complete rework of overall project architecture and either way it will hurt overall performance badly, probably making service meaningless. So my question is, what should I do, to avoid legal problems if my site in a nutshell is just a collection of magnet links? Privacy achieved via end-user encryption, so there is almost no access restrictions on the website. And anyway will help me any? Will hosting in particular country help me?

  • Images from remote source - is it possible or is it bad practice?

    I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries. I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since image space needed is related to how many images a user might upload, I thought about using cloud services like DropBox, Mega, and Google Drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem with this approach is that downloading the images from the 3rd party service would hamper the user experience due to the increased download times. Is there any way to save images belonging in an image gallery on remote source without hampering the user experience because of speed? Or is this approach really not a good practice?

    At the NIST Cloud Computing Workshop this week; representatives from Canada, China, and Japan presented on their cloud computing efforts. Some interesting points made: Canada: Building "Service Canada" cloud for all citizen services, but raised the issue of data location...cloud data must be within Canada border, so they will not focus on public clouds where they don't know or can't control data location. Japan: In response to the massive destruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan is building nation-wide cloud services to support disaster relief, data recovery, and support for rebuilding new communities. US Ambassador Philip Verveer discussed the need for international cooperation and standards development to enable interoperability of cloud services, keeping in mind cultural and political differences. Additionally, an industry panel reported on cloud standards development, including some actual interoperability testing at http://www.cloudplugfest.org. Much of the first two days of the workshop covered progress and action plans around the 10 High-Priority Requirements to Further USG Agency Cloud Computing Adoption. Thursday's sessions will cover the work of the various NIST Cloud Computing Working Groups on Reference Architecture and Taxonomy Standards Acceleration to Jumpstart the Adoption of Cloud Computing (SAJACC) Cloud Security Standards Roadmap Business Use Cases (see Working Groups of NIST Cloud Computing )

  • Error applying iptable rules

    When I try to use iptables command on one of my Rackspace cloud server, I'm getting the following error. I was trying to apply iptable rules with iptables-apply -t 120 /etc/iptables.rules and iptables-restore < /etc/iptables.rules FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35.4-rscloud/modules.dep: No such file or directory iptables-restore v1.4.4: iptables-restore: unable to initialize table 'filter' Error occurred at line: 2 Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information. How could I fix this?. Anybody has any technique?

  • UEC - Unable to SSH into instance, asks for password

    I am attempting to set up a private cloud using Ubuntu 10.04.4 Server. I am following the tutorial at http://cssoss.wordpress.com/2010/11/26/eucabook-v1-1/ . All steps go on perfectly apart from that I am unable to SSH into the running instances. I have created the instance using a public key and try to SSH into instance using the private key. However it asks for password. I am able to ping the instance though. I have tried using both the pre-built images from the store as well as custom built images. Several people seem to have the same problem but there does not seem to be any working solution. Thanks in advance.

    I guess this is trivial and most commonly asked question, but I'd reiterate it again here as I'm not able to find a correct solution. I'm trying to install Ubuntu Cloud setup on VMWare using the package from http://download.ubuntu.com and have this basic installation setup issue as per the below image. file:///cdrom/pool/main/k/klibc/klibc-utils_1.5.25-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb was corrupt The issue is I cannot continue by skipping this as you know this happens to be the most important setup. How can I fix this? Help is sincerely appreciated.

    I was thinking the other day, it would be amazing if a web-based product with the following features existed: Customizable text editor with nice formatting like ACE Real-time collaborative editing like Google Docs (or the late Wave) Online multi-language compiling capabilities like Ideone.com SCM hosting and/or integration + issue management like... oh, I don't know, GitHub Clearly (considering the examples), all the desired features exist. Is there anywhere that they exist all in one product? If not, does anything come close?

  • Domain transfer from Yahoo to Godaddy. Google apps downtime

    I am moving my domain from Yahoo to Godaddy (cause yahoo charges ridiculously hugh amounts than others). My problem is I use this domain for Google apps and one of those is my custom email. So here are a few questions that I have - 1) Godaddy told me there is going to be a 48 hours of downtime. Is there anything that I can do to minimize the downtime? 2) Will I lose all the email that I get during this downtime? or they be stored in the cloud and bulk emailed me once my domain is up with Godaddy? If they are lost is there any workaround to forward them to my gmail during the downtime (i know sounds stupid, but I have to ask). Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
