• Is this the best way to get the size of a Paper via CUPS?

  I've got a CUPS job control file. I need to get the actual dimensions of the print that was made. This is the way I've figure out to do it: Get the paper name using the media attribute. (e.g. Letter) Get the printer uri from the printer-uri attribute. (e.g. ipp://localhost/printers/MyPrinter) Get the printer name by passing the printer uri to the IPP_GET_PRINTER_ATTRIBUTES operation and getting the printer-name attribute. (e.g. MyPrinter) Get the path to the PPD passing the printer name to the the cupsGetPPD method. Open the PPD passing the path to the PPD to the ppdOpenFile method. Get the paper size by passing the PPD and paper name to the ppdPageSize method. This will work, but it seems a bit roundabout. Is there a more efficient way of getting what I need?

• What would be my best MySQL Synchronization method?

  We're moving a social media service to be on separate data centers with global load balancing, as our other hosting provider's entire data center went down. Twice. This means that both websites need to be synchronized in some sense -- I'm less worried about the code of the pages, that's easy enough to sync, but they need to have the same database data. From my research on SO, it seems MySQL Replication is a good option, but the MySQL manual, for scaling out, says that its best when there are far more reads then there are writes/updates: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/replication-solutions-scaleout.html In our case, it's about equal. We're getting around 200-300 thousand requests a day right now, and we can grow rapidly. Every request is both a read and write request. What would be the best method or tool to handle this?

• Can anyone tell why Wordpress is adding this p tag?

  Here's the page: http://www.gammagoochee.com/media/ WP is adding a p tag on line 55 between the end of my header and the beginning of my post content. I am using Raw HTML Pro, and the post starts with content surrounded by [raw] tags. There is no content between the last tag in my header, and the beginning of my post. This doesn't happen on my other site pages, and the only difference is that this page is using a template, but the template is the same in this part of the page. All the template does differently than the other site pages is add a sidebar. Anyone have any ideas whatsoever why WP is adding this p tag, and/or how I can prevent it? Thanks so much!

• do people value information or aesthetic value of websites ? [closed]

  I'm thinking, why does the web have to be so colorful. meaning, all the information is buried deep beneath layers of flash, javascripts, html and images. Sure, a good positioning of these media files, create an aesthetic value but how important is it to the user ? moreover, aren't people looking for information after all ? why can't the internet be a uniform looking data warehouse ? now we've gotta digg through all the aesthetic junk, using shady web scraping techniques, unless RSS or API is provided. why can't we settle for just a dull grey button and framesets for navigation ? why can't all sites have navigation frame on the left and top ? why can't all sites put their damn data always in normalized table tag ?

• django-avatar: cant save thumbnail

  I'm use django-avatar app and can't make it to save thumbnails. The original image save normally in my media dir. • How can you prevent a window being captured by Print-Screen?

  I noticed a few times than when I print-screen while Media Player is running, the content is replaced with a grey rectangle. I've no idea if it's deliberate due to DRM, or some technical issue, but it struck me that being able to deliberately block screen-capture might be a useful feature in some scenarios. Is there some specific message each HWND gets for print-screen - does Windows do a special repaint or simply dump buffers to the clipboard? I guess I'd prefer to focus this on Win32 specifically, but as long as it's Windows-related then fine.

• Through Java, make a call to Javascript functions on networked device?

  I am doing device monitoring on a networked system. I need to know how to make Javascript calls on that device via its IP address to get certain status information (this device's status is only available through Javascript APIs, not SNMP, etc). I am working in Java. ADDED: The specific device is an Amino set-top-box. It has what it calls JMACX: JavaScript Media Access Control Extensions API specification. It allows you within an HTML document to use that API to get MUCH information about the device (cpu usage, channel info, remote-control options, etc.). I need to get this information within a Java program for specific monitoring purposes. Perhaps possible with HTTP requests? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve

  Hi, I was trying to create a directory of private files that could only be accessed when a user logs in. To do this, I used a folder outside the web directory, and then php to access it, if allowed. • How do I implement jQuery image cycle loops on rollover for multiple thumbnail sets on a page?

  Here is the Javascript I currently have <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { $('.slideshow').hover( function() { $('.slides').cycle('resume'); }, function() { $('.slides').cycle('pause'); } ); $('.slides').cycle({ fx: 'fade', speed: .3, timeout: 280, next: '#next', prev: '#prev' }).cycle("pause"); }); </script> It works; but the thing is it works for all thumbnail sets on the page, and whenever I mouseover on one set of images, every other set of images loops as well. I do see that this is because I'm targeting classes, but my jQuery experience is quite limited so I have no idea how to only target a single instance of each class without effecting the others, and I can't go in and hardcode id's because my thumbnails and amount of videos on each page are determined dynamically via this Django template. http://pastebin.com/nf42bSAx I would greatly appreciate any help, as this is essential for my project (open source media platform). • Jquery - how to create a sophisticated sidebar that smoothly scrolls down with you

  I probably couldn't depict it better in the title (and if it has a term let me know), but just to quell the obscurity, I was referring to something like this. After you wait for the page to load, see how when you scroll down, the social media left bar stays fixed, but then when you scroll just enough that it meets your upper side, it sticks to it as you scroll further. I wanted to implement something corny and pretentious like that, so does anybody know a tutorial or a method to get that done in jquery? (I can probably do it myself, if I'm not mistaken, just need some sense of direction from savvy jqueryists). Is there a way to know when and how much a user scrolls? Can it be done with id's like the # url appendix to jump to a specific element? Just some ideas...

• best way to access/create SITE_ROOT and SERVER_ROOT values in PHP?

  I need 2 different paths, one for includes and one for js/css etc. I'm using mod_rewrite. The below works fine.... Currently all my files contain this at the top define('SERVER_ROOT', 'C:/wamp/www/site_folder/'); define('SITE_ROOT', 'http://localhost/site_folder/'); and then files are called like so: require_once SERVER_ROOT . 'st_wd_assets/inc/func_st_wd.php'; <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="<?php echo SITE_ROOT;?>st_pages/user_area/css/user_area.css" media="screen"/> as you can probably see, it's going to be a massive chore to update the top of every file everytime i move versions between the localhost and my live server. What's the best/standard way of defining these ROOT values? I can't see a solution in the $_SERVER super global? Do people normally just use VirtualHosts? But then wouldn't it still be necessary to define ROOT constants?

• Drawing problem does ShowWindow(hWnd, SW_HIDE) automatically invalidate rectangles?

  Hello, I'm running into a problem where, I have a Window that contains a child window. The child window contains another child window where a video is playing using Windows Media Player. Whenever I do call ShowWindow (hWnd, SW_HIDE) on the parent Window and paint over the entire surface, the region occupied by the grand-child window (where the video was playing) is not overridden. I used spy++ and found that that region which was not overridden was set to hidden BEFORE the repaint occurs. I monitored the hwnd of the grand-child window and it did not seem to receive any WM_EraseBKGND or WM_NCPAINT messages. Does this mean the area it occupied had not been invalidated and therefore could not be drawn over? I'm new to winforms. Thanks!

  I have /path/to/my/theme/static/css/frontend.css which is called by base.html <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="{{ STATIC_URL }}css/frontend.css" media="all" /> In which I've got a background for the header: #header-wrapper min-width: 960px; height: 150px; background: transparent url(img/header-bg.png) repeat-x center bottom; } The file is /path/to/my/theme/static/img I've run manage.py collectstatic to gather the files and almost everything looks correct except the link generated looks like: http://example.com/static/css/img/header-bg.png In which the image does not show, because the correct URL is: http://example.com/static/img/header-bg.png Where am I going wrong??

  is it possible to create a timer where I can manually set the hours each day to a set number of hours but still remains accurate? For example; if I set the countdown for 5 hours at 2pm I want the timer to stop as soon as it hits 7pm. Also, when I set the timer for 5 hours I would like everyone in the world to see it countdown from 5 hours, no matter what the time is in their country. In the format: days hours minutes seconds. The reason I want to do this is for a streamer's website. He needs a flexible timer which can be manually changed and is the same worldwide for his viewers to know when he starts streaming.   From what I can see, CakePHP makes it easy to link to a CSS file in a view with the following: echo $html->css('my-css-filename',null,array(),FALSE); But what if I don't want to exclusively use hardcoded files? How can I get it to create a style tag with some dynamically generated rules in e.g. <style type="text/css" media="all">p {font-size:1.5em}</style> I am trying to do this in a view file, I'd like the CSS to be placed in the head tag, and I'm using CakePHP 1.2.7
