• How does Microsoft Detours work and how do I use it to get a stack trace?

  I am new to Microsoft Detours. I have installed it to trace the system calls a process makes. I run the following commands which I got from the web syelogd.exe /q C:\Users\xxx\Desktop\log.txt withdll.exe /d:traceapi.dll C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe I get the log file. The problem is I don't fully understand what is happening here. How does detours work? How does it trace the system calls? Also I don't know how to read the output in log.txt. Here is one line in log.txt 20101221060413329 2912 50.60: traceapi: 001 GetCurrentThreadId() Finally I want to get the stack trace of the process. How can I get that?

• Powershell call web service on new email event (Exchange 2010)

  I have Exchange 2010 and I need to run a process using web services against every new email to come in to a mailbox. The process will basically add the email to an internal task list. Can I use Powershell for this? Having never used Powershell before I don't really have a clue on it's capabilities. If not can anyone suggest another way of doing this other than monitoring the mailbox every X seconds. Really I'd like it event based so if no new mail then no processing. Cheers, Mike

• Java multi-threading - what is the best way to monitor the activity of a number of threads?

  I have a number of threads that are performing a long runing task. These threads themselves have child threads that do further subdivisions of work. What is the best way for me to track the following: How many total threads my process has created What the state of each thread currently is What part of my process each thread has currently got to I want to do it in as efficient a way as possible and once threads finish, I don't want any references to them hanging around becasuse I need to be freeing up memory as early as possible. Any advice?

• bad performance from too many caught errors?

  I have a large project in C# (.NET 2.0) which contains very large chunks of code generated by SubSonic. Is a try-catch like this causing a horrible performance hit? for (int x = 0; x < identifiers.Count; x++) {decimal target = 0; try { target = Convert.ToDecimal(assets[x + identifiers.Count * 2]); // target % } catch { targetEmpty = true; }} What is happening is if the given field that is being passed in is not something that can be converted to a decimal it sets a flag which is then used further along in the record to determine something else. The problem is that the application is literally throwing 10s of thousands of exceptions as I am parsing through 30k records. The process as a whole takes almost 10 minutes for everything and my overall task is to improve that time some and this seemed like easy hanging fruit if its a bad design idea. Any thoughts would be helpful (be kind, its been a miserable day) thanks, Chris

• WCF service blocked by Windows Firewall

  Hi, I've got a WCF service using a HttpBinding. The service is running in a self hosting process (A Windows Service) and this process is inside the Windows Firewall exceptions list. If the Firewall is active and I'm trying to access the service using a C# client or Internet Explorer, the service does not respond. But if the Firewall is disabled the connection works like a charm. Does anyone have expirence with WCF and the Windows Firewall? The problem came up on Windows 7 64bit. I didn't try another OS yet. Regards Michael

• Start multiple processes of a dll in delphi

  I have a "ActiveX library" project created with Delphi 2007. The library interface return XML data based on input values. This is then used by a PHP script that displays the data on a web page. This works great! The problem is that i can only run one instance of the dll process on the server. However, for security reasons, each of my customer should be able to access their own process of the dll (because the dll is always connected to only one database). Also, because of the way the delphi code is built, it doesn't support multiple threads. (It's a 100 000+ lines project using lots of singleton classes) Is there a way of starting several instances of the same dll? Is there a better way of transferring XML data from delphi to PHP? Sorry for the longish question, any help is appreciated (ps. I know the delphi code should be refactored, but this would mean 6 months of "circular reference" -hell :)

  Is there anyway to disallow publishing Debug builds when publishing ClickOnce aplications using Visual Studio 2008? I know this was asked before, but i can't figure out how from the answer. THe Accepted answer for previous question was: One thing you can do is add a condition to the .csproj or .vbproj file that MSBuild will check when doing a build. The condition would check if a publish is occurring and check if the build is a debug build, then do something like run an external tool or otherwise interrupt the build process or cause it to fail. Could anyone elaborate on that answer or tell me where/or how I can add this condition. • dvi generation: no bounding box

  Hi, I wrote a research paper in latex and generated pdf using kile. It worked perfectly well. Now conference people are asking for dvi file also. But Kile's quick build process does not give a dvi file, but its 'Latex' compile process does. So I tried to compile the document, and it gave errors for includegraphics saying figure not found. When I append the correct extensions to the image names, that errors stopped coming but new errors came "bounding box is missing". I added bounding box values and now DVI file is being generated. My questions are: I have tried giving very high and low bounding box values but there is no deformation in the PDF. Why? Can I generate a DVI without giving bounding box values? I want to update a JLabel from the interim result published by the swing worker as follows: publish("Published String"); Now to update the JLabel, I have coded the following: process(List<String> chunks) { if (chunks.size() > 0) { String text = chunks.get(chunks.size() - 1); label.setText(text); } } The above code works but my problem(or to be more specific, my doubt) is as follows: The above swing worker task is an annonymous inner class so it can access label field. But what if I want to make the swing worker class a non-inner class. Should I need to pass label as an argument to the constructor of swing worker class so that the process() method can access. Or Is there any other way? What approach does other developer follow to update UI components from the swing worker class' result when the swing worker class is not an inner class?

• c# - pull records from database without timeout

  Hi folks, i have a sql query with multiple joins & it pulls data from a database for processing. This is supposed to be running on some scheduled basis. So day 1, it might pull 500, day 2 say 400. Now, if the service is stopped for some reason & the data not processed, then on day3 there could be as much as 1000 records to process. This is causing timeout on the sql query. How best to handle this situation without causing timeout & gradually reducing workload to process? TIA

  Hello, I created a powershell object via .net to invoke commands. When I invoke normal commands like 'Get-Process' I had no problems: ps.AddCommand("Get-Process").AddParameter(...).Invoke() but I'm not able to invoke a .net method with the syntax "[namespace.class]::method", just to make an example to invoke [System.IO.File]::Exists("c:\boo.txt"). I tried with ps.AddCommand("[System.IO.File]::Exists(\"c:\boo.txt\")").Invoke() ps.AddCommand("[System.IO.File]::Exists").AddArgument("c:\boo.txt\").Invoke() and some others. It always throws an exception which says that the command specified is not recognized. There is a way to invoke that type of command? Thanks

• Port 80 is being used by SYSTEM (PID 4), what is that?

  I am trying to use port 80 for my application server, but when I perform "netstat -aon" I get TCP 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 4 When I look up the process in task manager, it shows PID 4 is SYSTEM, thats it, not extension... nothing, just "SYSTEM". Whats going on here? I'm afraid to end this process, what do I do? UPDATE: I've solved this through a stackoverflow question. • Are concurrency issues possible when using the WCF Service Behavoir attribute set to ConcurrencyMode

  We have a WCF service that makes a good deal of transactional NHibernate calls. Occasionally we were seeing SQL timeouts, even though the calls were updating different rows and the tables were set to row level locking. After digging into the logs, it looks like different threads were entering the same point in the code (our transaction using block), and an update was hanging on commit. It didn't make sense, though, because we believed that the following service class attribute was forcing a unique execution thread per service call: [ServiceBehavior(ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Multiple, InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerCall)] We recently changed the concurrency mode to ConcurrencyMode.Single and haven't yet run into any issues, but the bug was very difficult to reproduce (if anyone has any thoughts on flushing a bug like that out, let me know!). Anyway, that all brings me to my question: shouldn't an InstanceContextMode of PerCall enforce thread-safety within the service, even if the ConcurrencyMode is set to multiple? How would it be possible for two calls to be serviced by the same service instance? Thanks!

• python: can't terminate a thread hung in socket.recvfrom() call

  Hello, everyone I cannot get a way to terminate a thread that is hung in a socket.recvfrom() call. For example, ctrl+c that should trigger KeyboardInterrupt exception can't be caught.   Hi guys I'm developing a google apps solution and I'm building on the tutorial application give by google at http://code.google.com/googleapps/marketplace/tutorial_php.html - the thing is that the example given sets up the application such that the user has to enter in manually the email address or username and then it takes the user through an authentication process whereby it asks the user if they wish to allow the application to be given access to the services mentioned in the manifest.xml file. Isn't there a better way to do this I mean like I want that when the user upon logging into his google apps account just has to click in the application link installed and straight on should be able to enter the application. Can't the process of authentication and all be transparent in the backdrop. I need help on this asap. Thanks a bunch!

• glDrawElements allocating memory and not releasing it

  Using OpenGLES 1.1 on the iPhone 3G (device, not simulator), I do normal drawing fun. But at points during the run of the application I get giant memory spikes, after a lot of digging with instruments I have found that it is glDrawElements that is grabbing the memory. The buffer being allocated is 4 meg, which to me means its loading a texture into RAM, which I guess could be valid, but its never releasing this buffer, and is allocating multiple of them. How do I make sure that these buffers that GL is creating get destroyed, instead of just hanging around?
