Ubuntu Server Read-Only Filesystem Issue

We are running a virtual machine server with multiple virtual machines with ubuntu server edition 12.04 and every so often (usually after updates via webmin it seems), the hard-drive turns into read-only filesystem. Only two of the virtual machines get affected by this problem (that I noticed so far). What could be causing this issue? What could we try to fix this problem? Has anyone else had this problem before? If so, what did you do to fix it? If I use Aptitude instead of webmin, it will not turn into into a read-only filesystem. Though this could be a coincidence. Could it be a webmin issue? Thanks. UPDATE 1 Looks like this is not an update/webmin issue at all. How I know this is because one of the virtual servers is a git server and it turned into a read-only filesystem out of the blue today. With this new info provided to you, what should I try? Thanks.

There is no two finger scroll option in my "Mouse and Touchpad" settings

I simply do not have the option for "two-finger scrolling" available in my "Mouse and Touchpad" settings. I have tried a lot of terminal commands that I have found in the forums with no success. SSMS hanging without error when connecting to SQL

Scary day for me last Thursday. I had gone up to Brisbane, and was due to speak at the Queensland SQL User Group on Thursday night. Unfortunately, disaster struck about an hour beforehand. Nothing to do with the recent floods (although we were meeting in a different location because of them). It was actually down to the fact that I’d been fiddling with my machine to get Virtual Server running on Windows 7, and SQL had finally picked up a setting from then. I could run Management Studio, but it couldn’t connect at all. No error, it just seemed to hang. One of the things you have to do to get Virtual Server installed is to tweak the Group Policy settings. I’d used gpupdate /force to get Windows to pick up the new setting, which allowed me to get Virtual Server running properly, but at the time, SQL was still using the previous settings. Finally when in Brisbane, my machine picked up the new settings, and caused me pain. Dan Benediktson describes the situation. If the SQL client picks up the wrong value out of the GetOverlappedResult API (which is required for various changes in Windows 7 behaviour), then Virtual Server can be installed, but SQL Server won’t allow connections. Yay. Luckily, it’s easy enough to change back using the Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc). Then restarting the machine (again!, as gpupdate /force didn’t cut it either, because SQL had already picked up the value), and finally I could reconnect. On Thursday I simply borrowed another machine for my talk. Today, one of my guys had seen and remembered Dan’s post. Thanks, both of you.

Variables in static library are never initialized. Why?

I have a bunch of variables that should be initialized then my game launches, but must of them are never initialized. Here is an example of the code: MyClass.h class MyClass : public BaseObject { DECLARE_CLASS_RTTI(MyClass, BaseObject); ... }; MyClass.cpp REGISTER_CLASS(MyClass) Where REGISTER_CLASS is a macro defined as follow #define REGISTER_CLASS(className)\ class __registryItem##className : public __registryItemBase {\ virtual className* Alloc(){ return NEW className(); }\ virtual BaseObject::RTTI& GetRTTI(){ return className::RTTI; }\ }\ \ const __registryItem##className __registeredItem##className(#className); and __registryItemBase looks like this: class __registryItemBase { __registryItemBase(const _string name):mName(name){ ClassRegistry::Register(this); } const _string mName; virtual BaseObject* Alloc() = 0; virtual BaseObject::RTTI& GetRTTI() = 0; } Now the code is similar to what I currently have and what I have works flawlessly, all the registered classes are registered to a ClassManager before main(...) is called. I'm able to instantiate and configure components from scripts and auto-register them to the right system etc... The problem arrises when I create a static library (currently for the iPhone, but I fear it will happen with android as well). In that case the code in the .cpp files is never registered. Why is the resulting code not executed when it is in the library while the same code in the program's binary is always executed? Bonus questions: For this to work in the static library, what should I do? Is there something I am missing? Do I need to pass a flag when building the lib? Should I create another structure and init all the __registeredItem##className using that structure?

Gigabyte u24f Touchpad (elantech) not detected

A new Ubuntu user here. I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my gigabyte U24F laptop. At first the touch-pad (I believe it's elantech) was working fine but one day I turned it off using fn+f10 key from the keyboard. The next day I could no longer turn it back on and it has since been undetected by the system. xinput returns Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? Things I've tried so far to no avail Reinstalling xserver-xorg-input-synaptics. Checking dconf.editor settings, touchpad is enabled. Booting into a live usb session, touchpad no longer even works in this case. (Does this mean a fresh install wouldn't even solve the problem?) Any help is greatly appreciated!

Synaptics drivers are not loading on Kubuntu 13.10 on Dell Vostro 2420

I freshly installed Kubuntu 13.10, 32 bit version on newly purchased Dell Vostro 2420. everything is working fine except scrolling and multitouch features through touchpad. Ubuntu 13.04 under Parallels Desktop - Black Desktop after X Windows Update

I have been running Ubuntu 13.04 successfully on a MacBook Pro in a virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 9. Today (2013-10-17) after applying today's Ubuntu update, which included updates to X Windows, my Ubuntu 13.04 virtual machine launches, the launcher comes up, but the screen background is solid black, rather than the shaded orange colour of the default desktop background (and my desktop icons are "hidden behind this blackness", as well). I can launch applications from the launcher, and there is a very brief white flash on the screen, and then it returns to black. It's as if there is a "black blanket" covering the entire screen, so there is no way to interact with any application windows using the keyboard or mouse. The icons of the launcher are responsive to the mouse, so I can right-click and quit any application I have launched. But the rest of the screen is non-responsive to keyboard or mouse. This same behaviour happens with two different versions of Parallels Tools, so I am quite sure this is not a Parallels problem per se, although I could believe that it could be a paroblem with the interface between Parallels and this new updated X Windows code. Could anyone tell me what has happened, and how I might be able to fix this problem, so I can continue to use my Ubuntu 13.04 virtual machine? (I do have the option of reverting to a previous version of my virtual machine from before this update, but if possible I would prefer to keep my version of Ubuntu 13.04 up to date with the latest updates.) protected abstract override Foo(); – er... what?

A couple of weeks back, a co-worker was pondering a situation he was facing. He was looking at the following class hierarchy: abstract class OriginalBase { protected virtual void Test() { } } abstract class SecondaryBase : OriginalBase { } class FirstConcrete : SecondaryBase { } class SecondConcrete : SecondaryBase { } Basically, the first 2 classes are abstract classes, but the OriginalBase class has Test implemented as a virtual method. What he needed was to force concrete class implementations to provide a proper body for the Test method, but he can’t do mark the method as abstract since it is already implemented in the OriginalBase class. One way to solve this is to hide the original implementation and then force further derived classes to properly implemented another method that will replace it. The code will look like the following: abstract class OriginalBase { protected virtual void Test() { } } abstract class SecondaryBase : OriginalBase { protected sealed override void Test() { Test2(); } protected abstract void Test2(); } class FirstConcrete : SecondaryBase { // Have to override Test2 here } class SecondConcrete : SecondaryBase { // Have to override Test2 here } With the above code, SecondaryBase class will seal the Test method so it can no longer be overridden. Then it also made an abstract method Test2 available, which will force the concrete classes to override and provide the proper implementation. Calling Test will properly call the proper Test2 implementation in each respective concrete classes. I was wondering if there’s a way to tell the compiler to treat the Test method in SecondaryBase as abstract, and apparently you can, by combining the abstract and override keywords. The code looks like the following: abstract class OriginalBase { protected virtual void Test() { } } abstract class SecondaryBase : OriginalBase { protected abstract override void Test(); } class FirstConcrete : SecondaryBase { // Have to override Test here } class SecondConcrete : SecondaryBase { // Have to override Test here } The method signature makes it look a bit funky, because most people will treat the override keyword to mean you then need to provide the implementation as well, but the effect is exactly as we desired. The concepts are still valid: you’re overriding the Test method from its original implementation in the OriginalBase class, but you don’t want to implement it, rather you want to classes that derive from SecondaryBase to provide the proper implementation, so you also make it as an abstract method. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before in the wild, so it was pretty neat to find that the compiler does support this case.

I am using ubuntu 11.10. I want the following 3 things: I have dell inspiron 5110 laptop. There is button at the top right corner of laptop which can be used for turning the screen off. It works in windows but it does not work in ubuntu 11.10. Even in the manual of the laptop, it the button is supported only in windows. Is there a way to activate it in ubuntu 11.10? Some of the keys like: "break" etc. are missing. Can I use other keys (or combinations of other keys) to function as those missing keys? In the program, "mouse and touchpad", there is no tab for touchpad. I want to enable vertical and horizontal scrolling. How do I do that? The problem is I receive the following error: "The ObjectContext instance has been disposed and can no longer be used for operations that require a connection." How to make Shared Keys .ssh/authorized_keys and sudo work together?

I've setup the .ssh/authorized_keys and am able to login with the new "user" using the pub/private key ... I have also added "user" to the sudoers list ... the problem I have now is when I try to execute a sudo command, something simple like: $ sudo cd /root it will prompt me for my password, which I enter, but it doesn't work (I am using the private key password I set) Also, ive disabled the users password using $ passwd -l user What am I missing? Somewhere my initial remarks are being misunderstood ... I am trying to harden my system ... the ultimate goal is to use pub/private keys to do logins versus simple password authentication. I've figured out how to set all that up via the authorized_keys file. Additionally I will ultimately prevent server logins through the root account. But before I do that I need sudo to work for a second user (the user which I will be login into the system with all the time). For this second user I want to prevent regular password logins and force only pub/private key logins, if I don't lock the user via" passwd -l user ... then if i dont use a key, i can still get into the server with a regular password. But more importantly I need to get sudo to work with a pub/private key setup with a user whos had his/her password disabled. Edit: Ok I think I've got it (the solution): 1) I've adjusted /etc/ssh/sshd_config and set PasswordAuthentication no This will prevent ssh password logins (be sure to have a working public/private key setup prior to doing this 2) I've adjusted the sudoers list visudo and added root ALL=(ALL) ALL dimas ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL 3) root is the only user account that will have a password, I am testing with two user accounts "dimas" and "sherry" which do not have a password set (passwords are blank, passwd -d user) The above essentially prevents everyone from logging into the system with passwords (a public/private key must be setup). Additionally users in the sudoers list have admin abilities. They can also su to different accounts. So basically "dimas" can sudo su sherry, however "dimas can NOT do su sherry. Similarly any user NOT in the sudoers list can NOT do su user or sudo su user. NOTE The above works but is considered poor security. Any script that is able to access code as the "dimas" or "sherry" users will be able to execute sudo to gain root access. A bug in ssh that allows remote users to log in despite the settings, a remote code execution in something like firefox, or any other flaw that allows unwanted code to run as the user will now be able to run as root. Sudo should always require a password or you may as well log in as root instead of some other user.

can't send with postfix but I can whith one user

I have a postfix and dovecot server but when i try to send an email i get an time -out. Im trying to send with the email [email protected]. A telnet session isn't helping much ether. I get a blank screen. Local it's working fine. My smtp service is running on treadity.com:25. The strange thing is that the logs are completely empty with any info regarding sending emails. Receiving is working alright. Another strange thing is that i've send some message's and that it worked. But that is only with one email. Hi somebody please help me out, I've asked this at stackoverflow as well but not got much of a response and was debating whether it was programming or server related. I’m trying to setup a cakephp environment on a Centos server running Nginx with Fact CGI. I already have a wordpress site running on the server and a phpmyadmin site so I have PHP configured correctly. My problem is that I cannot get the rewrite rules setup correct in my vhost so that cake renders pages correctly i.e. with styling and so on.
