• Does MultiThreading in Java takes much time for task completion?

  I have to search for a string in 10 large size files (in zip format 70 MB) and have to print the lines with the search string to corresponding 10 output files.(i.e. file 1 output should be in output_file1...file2--- output_file2). The same program takes 15 mins for a single file. But if use 10 threads to read 10 files and to write in 10 different files it should complete in 15 mins but its taking 40 mins. How can I solve this. Or multithreading will take this much time only?

  I have two table testa & testb. The query is retreiving acurate result but it is taking minimum 30 seconds to execute which is too much. I have also tried to optimise my query using UNION but failed to do so. SELECT a.id, a.name, b.name, b.id FROM testb b INNER JOIN testa a ON b.aid1 = a.id OR b.aid2 = a.id OR b.aid3 = a.id ; How do i optimize my query so it's total execution time is within 2-3 seconds?   Hi Based on the following table ID Effort Name ------------------------- 1 1 A 2 1 A 3 8 A 4 10 B 5 4 B 6 1 B 7 10 C 8 3 C 9 30 C I want to check if the total effort against a name is less than 40 then add a row with effort = 40 - (Total Effort) for the name. The ID of the new row can be anything. If the total effort is greater than 40 then trucate the data for one of the rows to make it 40. So after applying the logic above table will be ID Effort Name ------------------------- 1 1 A 2 1 A 3 8 A 10 30 A 4 10 B 5 4 B 6 1 B 11 25 B 7 10 C 8 3 C 9 27 C I was thinking of opening a cursor, keeping a counter of the total effort, and based on the logic insert existing and new rows in another temporary table. I am not sure if this is an efficient way to deal with this. I would like to learn if there is a better way.

• layout is not included in all pages in asp.net mvc4 application

• Shell script to count files, then remove oldest files

If I have more than 10 backup files, I would like to remove the oldest files, so that the 10 newest backup files are the only ones that are left. • while(0=0) evaluates to false

  b=10; while(a=b) { b--; if(b==-10)break; } B goes from 10 to -10. In my world, the while-statement, a=b, should always be true (since the assigment always "goes well"). That is not the case. When the loop stops, b will have a value of 0. In my world, it should pass 0 and go all the way to -10, when the if-statement kicks in. Have I misunderstood something major? (Code tested in IE8 and Adobe Acrobat)

  I need little help with transferring data from variables, arrays, lists to my SQL Server. Im not bad in SQL, but im not familiar with DataSet, DataTable objects. My data is now stored in list of strings (List). Every string in that list looks similar to this: QWERTY,19920604,0.91,0.35,0.34,0.35,343840 There are about 900000 rows like this. Target datatypes in SQL Server: BIGINT (primary key, im not inserting it, its identity(1,1)) VARCHAR(10), DATE, DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), INT How to convert that data to SQL Server data types? How to insert that data into SQL Server? Also i need some progress bar updates between inserts. I could do this using old-fashion SQL command, but i have learn more modern way :)

• Which index is used in select and why?

  I have the table with zip codes with following columns: id - PRIMARY KEY code - NONCLUSTERED INDEX city When I execute query SELECT TOP 10 * FROM ZIPCodes I get the results sorted by id column. But when I change the query to: SELECT TOP 10 id FROM ZIPCodes I get the results sorted by code column. Again, when I change the query to: SELECT TOP 10 code FROM ZIPCodes I get the results sorted by code column again. And finally when I change to: SELECT TOP 10 id,code FROM ZIPCodes I get the results sorted by id column. My question is in the title of the question. I know which indexes are used in the queries, but my question is, why those indexes are used? I the second query (SELECT TOP 10 id FROM ZIPCodes) wouldn't it be faster if the clusteder index was used? How the query engine chooses which index to use?

When a.bid or a.cid is NULL, I want to get every row where the other column matches, e.g. if a.bid is NULL, I want every row where a.cid=b.cid, if both are NULL I want every column from b. My naive solution was this: SELECT DISTINCT b.* FROM b JOIN a ON ( ISNULL(a.bid) OR a.bid=b.bid ) AND (ISNULL(a.cid) OR a.cid=b.cid ) Is there any better way to to this?

• GROUP BY and SUM distinct date across 2 tables

  I'm not sure if this is possible in one mysql query so I might just combine the results via php. I have 2 tables: 'users' and 'billing' I'm trying to group summed activity for every date that is available in these two tables. 'users' is not historical data but 'billing' contains a record for each transaction. In this example I am showing a user's status which I'd like to sum for created date and deposit amounts that I would also like to sum by created date. I realize there is a bit of a disconnect between the data but I'd like to some all of it together and display it as seen below. This will show me an overview of all of the users by when they were created and what the current statuses are next to total transactions. I've tried UNION as well as LEFT JOIN but I can't seem to get either to work. Union example is pretty close but doesn't combine the dates into one row.   I'm trying to write a process that would read data from a database and upload it onto a cloud datastore. How can I decide the partition strategy of the data? I want to query the table in chunks and process each chunk in 10 threads. Each thread basically will send the data to an individual node on a 10 node cluster on the cloud..   How can I perform this code: if a number n is divisible by 3, add 4 to n; if n is not divisible by 3 but by 4, divise n by 2; if n is not divisible by 3, not by 4, make n=n-1. The problem with me is that I don't know how to make this successively. For example: with the number 6, I have to have: 6, 10, 9, 13, 12, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 et 0 6+4=10; 10-1=9; 9+4=13; 13-1=12; 12+4=16; 16/2=8.....0 This makes 10 operations. • Apps crashing with EXC_BAD_ACCESS when changing to a custom keyboard layout

  I have a custom layout installed (svdvorak_mac6.keylayout). After a reboot another keyboard layout was selected, so I selected my usual one instead. This lead to a lot of apps suddenly starting to crash (Chrome, Skype, Adium etc). I can change to any other built in layout for OS X, but as soon as I choose one custom installed one (either form ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ or from /Library/Keyboard Layouts/) the apps crash. The only thing I can remember that I did before the reboot was to install Google's video chat plugin for the browser.   I have been trying to solve this for ages and can't figure it out. I have a form like so (taking out a lot of other fields) <% form_for @machine_enquiry, machine_enquiry_path(@machine_enquiry) do|me_form| %> <% me_form.fields_for :messages_attributes do |f| %> <%= Issue Backup Failure (VSS related) Backup Software Windows Server Backup (ver 1.0) Simplified Error Creation of the shared protection point timed out. Unknown error (0x81000101) The flush and hold writes operation on volume C: timed out while waiting for a release writes command. Volume Shadow Copy Warning: VSS spent 43 seconds trying to flush and hold the volume \?\Volume{b562a5dd-8246-11de-a75b-806e6f6e6963}. This might cause problems when other volumes in the shadow-copy set timeout waiting for the release-writes phase, and it can cause the shadow-copy creation to fail. Trying again when disk activity is lower may solve this problem. What I've tried Server Reboot. Updated Server and Exchange. ReConfigured Sharepoint (Helped resolve last vss error I encountered). registered VSS Dll's (Backups will sometimes work afterwards but VSS writers fail soon after).
