• How to strengthen Mysql database server Security?

  If we were to use server1 for all files (file server), server2 for mysql database (database server). In order for websites in server1 to access to the database in server2, isn't it needed to connect to to ip address of second (mysql server) ? In this case, is remote mysql connection. However, I seen from some people comment on the security issue. remote access to MySQL is not very secure. When your remote computer first connects to your MySQL database, the password is encrypted before being transmitted over the Internet. But after that, all data is passed as unencrypted "plain text". If someone was able to view your connection data (such as a "hacker" capturing data from an unencrypted WiFi connection you're using), that person would be able to view part or all of your database. So I just wondering ways to secure it? Allow remote mysql access from server1 by allowing the static ip adress allow remote access from server 1 by setting port allowed to connect to 3306 change 3306 to other port? Any advice?

• What do I need to do besides code?

  I'm a single-person operation for my small employer. I'm working on a couple of web applications that have grown to medium-size. We have backups going and everything is in version control with Subversion. I have comments in my code, but documentation outside of code is "spotty at best", and frequently things change. What do I need to do to bring it to the next level, beyond a pile of ( version-controlled, well-commented ) code? What would you say is required to have a robust set of documentation outside of the codebase itself, where the project is at, and where it's going? Ideally I would like some integrated system that would go from brainstorm, to requirements, to tracking bugs and features in svn check-in messages, to documentation. Would trac or redmine do something like this? I would like to show to my boss, "This is the prioritized list of features, this is where we are now, this is how long I spend on this feature, how long I spent on this bug" and I'd like to spend the minimum amount of time managing the projects :) What about ERD and UML diagrams? Is a project incomplete without them?

• Flash Player, security: If a URL starts with "http://" will the SWF always be loaded into REMOTE san

  Seems to be a question for a Flash security guru. Suppose we are loading an external SWF movie with MovieClipLoader.loadMovie(url:String) Is it safe to assume that if url starts with "http://", the movie will be loaded in REMOTE sandbox? We need to tell local SWFs from remote ones to close a security hole. If you need the context read on. We have developed a Projector, written in C++ embedding Flash Player ActiveX. Our Flash application runs inside the Projector. Soon we want to give our users a way to create plugins for the application. The plugins are obviously will be SWF movies. The case I'm afraid of is the following. A bad person creates a malicious evil.swf pretending it to be nice plugin for our app. In case evil.swf is loaded from the local file system it is granted an access to the whole MovieClip tree and Projector API, opening C++ file access operations. On the other hand if evil.swf is loaded from the internet, remotely, it will be locked in REMOTE sandbox by Flash security model. Because of this, we need a reliable way to tell local SWF from remote one before loading it. And we must not make a mistake. So again, is it safe to assume that if url begins with "http://", the clip will be loaded inside REMOTE sandbox?

I am fairly new to JS (my background is in C++, enterprise languages like assembly and COBOL, and some light .NET), so I was wondering if I could get some advice regarding how to send variable information from one of two text boxes to some javascript and then have the JS do some basic checks and such.   I constantly hear from other people about how much of the stuff they've used to customize their *nix setup they've shamelessly stolen from other people. So in that spirit, I'd like to start a place to share that stuff here on SO. Here are the rules: DON'T POST YOUR ENTIRE DOTFILE. Instead, just show us the cool stuff. One recipe per answer You may, however, post multiple versions of your recipe in the same answer. For example, you may post a version that works for bash, a version that works for zsh, and a version that works for csh in the same answer. State what shells you know your recipe will work with in the answer. Let's build this cookbook as a team. If you find out that an answer works with other shells other than the one the author posted, edit it in. If you like an idea and rewrite it to work with another shell, edit the modified version in to the original post. Give credit where credit is due. If you got your idea from someone else, give them credit if possible. And for those of you (justifiably) asking "Why do we need another one of these threads?": Most of what I've seen is along the lines of "post your entire dotfile." Personally, I don't want to try to parse through a person's entire dotfile to figure out what I want. I just want to know about all the cool parts of it. It's helpful to have a single dotfile thread. I think most of the stuff that works in bash will work in zsh and it may be adapted to work with csh fairly easily.

Inside the update I wanted to start an activity based on if the game has just started and this would launch my MENUS. I'm in a bit of a trouble with buttons, i have a task to make an inbox and to add a "reply" and "delete" button into every instance of the message. I was indeed wandering if there is a better way to do that than forcing the HTML code into the script, because every message is dynamically generated. • Senior programming 'guru' who can't program - should I find a different career?

  Background: According to my resume I'm supposed to be pretty good at programming. I've worked on a ton of big projects at big companies over many years. When I go for an interview and someone looks at my resume they immediately assume I really know what I'm talking about. I generally communicate well, present myself well, know the 'jargon' and know a lot about technology at a high level, which makes matters worse because after talking to me for a while an interviewer really believes that what my resume says is probably true. The Problem: The problem arises when someone asks me to code something. I choke. As a programmer I have almost no capacity to come up with creative solutions of my own. I can't think through solutions to a programming problem the way good programmers are usually able to. I read questions on StackOverflow and the answer is obvious to me after I read other people's answers but if I am the first person to look at a question with no hints from anyone else I usually don't know where to start. At work it's the same thing. I'm fine if I'm correcting other people's code. I can identify the source of a bug quicker than anyone I work with. But if you ask me to sit down and code up a new application from scratch I will spend ten times longer than programmers who are much more junior than me. Question: Now that I am looking for work this is raising its ugly head in interview situations and making me feel desperately that I'm in the wrong career. I don't know if this problem is incompetence, laziness or some combination of these. Does anyone have any ideas about what I might be dealing with - are there books or exercises that could help me with this basic problem?

• Can I automate a loop query based on category with the page's title?

  To explain further, I need to get a page to display posts from a specific category. I want to automate this process so I don't have to make a template for each category. How would I do that? (keep in mind the person I'm building this is for has no coding experience.) The only way I could think off from the top of my head is to use the title or slug. So if the category is named the same thing as the slug, could I filter by category using the slug? Maybe this isn't the best way... what should I do?   I''m trying to build a generic cache layer. ICacheRepository Say I have the following: public class Person { public int PersonId { get; set; } public string Firstname { get; set; } public string Lastname { get; set; } public DateTime Added { get; set; } } And I have something like this: list.Where(x => x.Firstname == "Syska"); Here I want to extract the above information, to see if the query supplied the "PersonId" which it did not, so I dont want to cache it. But lets say I run a query like this: list.Where(x => x.PersonId == 10); Since PersonId is my key ... I want to cache it. with the key like "Person_10" and I later can fetch it from the cache. I know its possible to extract the information with Expression<Func<>> but there seems to be a big overhead of doing this (when running compile and extract the Constant values etc. and a bunch of cache to be sure to parse right) Are there a framework for this? Or some smart/golden way of doing this ?

• Shouldn't we ignore IE6 and IE7 users?

  Lately I created two webpages with a simple CMS for a a small club and a private person (http://foto.roser.li and http://www.ovlu.li/cms). I dont really understand much of HTML/PHP/CSS and all this web stuff, but it was enough to adapt the stylesheets and add some javascript functions and so on to make the pages to look more or less nice in firefox and IE8. Nevertheles, if you open the pages with IE7 or IE6, particulary the second home page really looks terrible. So what should I do know? I don't have the know-how to adapt the stylesheets so that it looks good at such browsers. However if I check the statistics of the pages, i noticed that almost half of the visitors uses this kind of browsers. I could put much effort in adapting the stylesheets to look good at all browser but while thinking about this I'm asking myself if this is really the best way. If all developers put effort in providing solutions for really old browsers (like e.g. the IE6), then people who use these brwoser dont have any incentives to update their browsers. Naturally, I as a provider of information should present the content in a readable form to my users, but were should i draw the line? I also saw that some users are visiting the pages with even IE5 or IE4... but I really can't think of a way how to adapt the content in a suitable form for these very old brwosers. I would appreciaed any hints how to handle this balancing between putting much effort into developing a version for very old brwosers and the necessity of providing content to all users which want to visits my homepages. Im also interested in your thoughts about they idea that putting effort in adapting the content for old browsers prevents the users from updating their browsres because they don't see any need.

I am in the process of planning a database for a social networking project and stumbled upon this url which is a (crude) reverse engineered guess at facebook's schema: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ikhnaton2/533233247/ What is of interest to me is the notion of "Affiliations" and I am trying to fully understand how they work, technically speaking. Where I am somewhat confused is the NetworkID column in the FacebookGroups", "FacebookEvent", and "Affiliations" tables (NID in Affiliations). How are these network affiliations interconnected? • My HTML5 web app crashes and I have no clue how to debug

  Hi All, I have written a word game using HTML5 canvas tag and a little bit of audio. I developed the application on the chrome web browser on a linux system. Recently during the testing phase it was tried on safari 5.0.3 on Mac and the webpage froze. Not just the canvas element, but interactive element on the page froze. I have at some times experienced this problem on google chrome when I was developing but since the console did not throw any error before this happened, I did not give it much credence. Now as per requirements I am supposed to support both chrome and safari but this dismal performance on safari has left me shocked and I cannot see what error can be thrown which might lead to such a situation. Worse yet the CPU usage on using this application peaks to 70-80percent on my 2yr old macbook running ubuntu... I can only but pity the person who uses mac to operate this app, which undoubtedly is a heavier OS. Could someone help me out with a place I can start with to find out what exactly is causing this issue. I have run profiles on this webapp on google chromes console and noticed that in the heap spanshot value increases steadily with the playing of the game, specifically (root) value which jumps up by 900 counts. Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks EDIT: I don't know if this helps, but I have noticed that even on refreshing the page after the app becomes unresponsive the page reloads and I am still not able to interact with the page elements but the tab scroll bar continues to work and I can see my application window completely. So to summaries the tab stops accepting any sort of user interaction inside the page. Edit2: Nop. It doesn't work still... The app crashes on double click on the canvas element. The console is not throwing any errors either! =/ I have noticed this problem is isolated only to safari!

• Replacing mysql user authentication with openid

  So, I'm working with a really old system which uses a person's mysql database credentials to authenticate to a web site (the database was originally only accessed from the command line, but is now accessed from a php frontend). Because of some internal reasons (and to preserve the user's history), I have to leave the old authentication intact. I've been charged with adding openid authentication to this system. Somehow I need to be able to retrieve a users mysql username and password upon logging into the site through openid (using the Zend framework, by the way). I've thought of simply requiring registration at the first login, where the user must provide their mysql credentials, but I'd rather not store the password plain text. I've also considered blanking everyone's mysql passwords, and just setting the user's mysql username manually (rather than having the user provide this, since they could provide any username). This is turning into a security nightmare. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives? This is running on a Linux server, by the way. Also, I can't use mysql pluggable authentication because the mysql version is 5.0 (pluggable authentication requires mysql 5.5), and no, I can't update it.

• What is the best Networking implementation for my application?

  I am in the planning phases of a project for myself, it is to be a single and multi-player card game. I would like to track statistics for each person such as world rankings etc... My problem is I do not know the best approach for the client - server architecture and programming. My original goal was to program everything in C# as I want to get proficient in that language. My original idea was to have a back-end database and a back end server run on some sort of hosting on the internet, however that seems costly for such a small project that may or may not make any money. I have tried looking into cloud services however I am unfamiliar with the technology, and I am not sure I can make them suit my needs, especially since most like Google's cloud wants you to use their coding architecture from what I understand. Finally my last problem is that I would like an architecture that can be used for different languages so that I can port it from PC to IPhone, Xbox etc... So does anyone have any advice on the best architecture and language to do this in? Am I worrying about architecture and back-end costs to much and should just concentrate on getting the game running any which way?

I know how to do a socket program for client server model and clear on the concept. But creating a peer to peer architecture sounds complex for me to understand.   We are in design phase of a project whose goal is replatforming an ASP classic application to ASP.Net 4.0. The system needs to be entirely web based. There are several new requirements for the new system that make this a challenging project: The system needs to be database independent. It must, at version 1.0, support MS SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Postgres and DB2. The system must be able to allow easy reporting from the database by third party reporting packages. The system must allow an administrative end user to create their own tables in the database through the web based interface. The system must allow an administrative end user to design/configure a user interface (web based) where they can select tables and fields in the system (either our system's core tables or their own custom tables created in #3) The system must allow an administrative end user to create and maintain relationships between these custom created tables, and also between these tables and our system's core tables. The system must allow an administrative end user to create business rules that will enforce validation, show/hide UI elements, block certain actions based on the identity of specific users, specific user groups or privileges. Essentially it's a system that has some core ticket tracking functionality, but allows the end user to extend the interface, business rules and the database. Is this possible to build in a .Net, Web based environment? If so, what do you think the level of effort would be to get this done? We are currently a 6 person shop, with 2.5 full time developers.

An example of what I want to achieve is to have an plain ol' html page ( on a mobile device )with a list of a Salesperson's Customers. When one of those customers are clicked, the customer id gets sent to a webservice which retrieves the customer details that are relevant to a sales person. I know the SO talent pool is quite deep so I figured you all here would be able to guide in the right direction and give me a few ideas on the best way to approach this.

• How to conduct an interview for a development position remotely?

  Usually we run interviews in office. We have a room with a table, the interviewee and one or two interviewers sit at the table, interviewers ask questions, often accompanied with code snippets on paper, the interviewee (hopefully) answers them, writes code snippets to illustrate his point. Usually it's something like an interviewer writes about five lines of C++ code and asks some specific question - quite a little code. Now we need to do the same remotely. We will be in our office and the interviewee will be far away - we are asked to help hire a person for another office located abroad. Of course we can use some technology for voice calls, but I'm afraid it's the most we can count on. I see a whole set of obstacles here: how to write illustration code snippets and exchange them efficiently? what to do to compensate for the fact that we're not native English speakers and the interviewees might or might be not native English speakers (I'm afraid this can make conversation significantly harder)? Are there any best practices for this situation? How could we address the obstacles listed? What other things should we consider to run the interview most efficiently?

• JQuery transition animation

  This program randomly selects two employees from a json-object Employees array, winnerPos is already defined. For better user experience I programmed these functions to change pictures one by one. The animation stops when the randomly selected person is shown on the screen. At first it works, but not perfect. The second time the transition happens in an irregular way, i.e. different speed and fadeIn/fadeOut differs from picture to picture. Could anyone help me to fine-tune the transition?

• Common block usage in Fortran

  I'm new to Fortran and just doing some simple things for work. And as a new programmer in general, not sure exactly how this works, so excuse me if my explanation or notation is not the best. At the top of the .F file there are common declarations. The person explaining it to me said think of it like a struct in C, and that they are global. Also in that same .F file, they have it declared with what type. So it's something like: COMMON SOMEVAR INTEGER*2 SOMEVAR And then when I actually see it being used in some other file, they declare local variables, (e.g. SOMEVAR_LOCAL) and depending on the condition, they set SOMEVAR_LOCAL = 1 or 0. Then there is another conditional later down the line that will say something like IF (SOMEVAR_LOCAL. eq. 1) SOMEVAR(PARAM) = 1; (Again I apologize if this is not proper Fortran, but I don't have access to the code right now). So it seems to me that there is a "struct" like variable called SOMEVAR that is of some length (2 bytes of data?), then there is a local variable that is used as a flag so that later down the line, the global struct SOMEVAR can be set to that value. But because there is (PARAM), it's like an array for that particular instance? Thanks. Sorry for my bad explanation, but hopefully you will understand what I am asking.
