• Can I use REG_EXPAND_SZ for the locations of shell folders instead of REG_SZ

  I'm working on re-arranging a number of the shell folders in windows 7 to utilize Dropbox to keep a set of machines in sync. I'd like to create a .reg file which I can use to update the locations of these folders rather than manually changing them from the UI, but I don't want to rely on the path to the home folder being the same each time. So my question is, is it possible to replace the REG_SZ values in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders with REG_EXPAND_SZ values specifying an offset from %HOME% instead of an exact path?

• Win7 x64 unresponsive for a minute or so. HD failing?

  On a fully updated Win7 x64, every so often the system stalls for a minute or so. This has been going on for a couple months now. By stalling I mean the mouse responds and I can move windows around, but any window, any program, that is open becomes whiteish when I select it AND any new programs will not open. It doesn't matter what kind of program it is. When the stall stops all clicks I made (open new programs for example) take effect. Nothing shows up consistently (as in every time this happens) in the event log. Today though I was able to find something, but it doesn't reveal much other than the "system was unresponsive". It's a 7009 for "A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Windows Error Reporting Service service to connect." It doesn't matter if I have any USB devices plug-in or not. I've ran Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. While the machine is unresponsive, I've noticed that Drive D (the other partition on the single internal HD in this laptop) is displayed like this in explorer. This never occurs with Drive C or any other drive on the machine. . SMART report for the physical drive: Read benchmark by HD Tune 5 Pro, probably the most telling piece of the puzzle. Isn't this alone enough to see there is a problem with the drive, regardless of whether the unresponsiveness is caused by such purported problem? Do I have a defective drive? Seagate Tools diag says there is nothing wrong with the drive... UPDATE: I noticed that the windows error reporting service entered the running state then the stopped state and the space between the two events was exactly 2 minutes. Which error it was trying to report I don't know. I check the "Reliability Monitor" and it shows no errors to be reported. I've disabled the windows error reporting service to see if the problem stops.

  We noticed that on W7 with DPI set to 125% or to 100% with ("Use windows xp style dpi scaling") turned off, our fullscreen mode (which sets the client rect of our window = desktop rect of the main monitor) no longer hides the task bar like it does for other settings. (The setting can be found in the Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display section after clicking on the "Set custom text size (DPI)" link) I found the following interesting article: http://www.mathies.com/weblog/?p=908 So I set out to try to work around the bug in other means than manually hiding/restoring the taskbar visibility but so far I've failed and currently believe it's a bug in W7 (and possibly vista). The following applications also fail to work properly in fullscreen mode (the taskbar is still visible): * Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 * Microsoft Word 2007 * Adobe Reader 9.1.3 These apps work (probably by hiding the task bar through the WIN32 API): * Powerpoint Slide Show I also tried creating a brand new MFC-based app and use its "SetFullScreenMode()" functionality but it fails in the same way as all other apps on the list.   I recently reinstalled my file server (moved from fedora to Ubuntu server). Now I cannot mount my nfs share from Windows 7, mounting from Mac OSX works fine. In Windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does Ubuntu need some special magic to allow Windows 7 to mount an nfs share? How can I setup a 1 way trust, so that I am able to run executables, such as SQL Management Studio using RunAs - then type in credentials for work domain? • Windows data backups with alternating removable drives?

  0 vote down star I have a removable disk drive (RD1000 from Dell), and I am looking for backup software that will allow me to backup every night, and every morning switch to the alternate disk. There is only one directory structure to back up, what I want is two copies, one which I will take home with me every night, one which will be backing up every night, and when I get in in the morning, I will switch them. So for instance I have disk "a" and disk "b". On Monday night I want to go home with disk "a" and leave disk "b" in the drive, so that a scheduled back up will be written to it. On Tuesday morning I will come in and swap disks, and I will take "b" home that night, leaving "a" for the backup. And so on for the remainder of the week. FOSS software preferred, Freeware acceptable, paid software as a last-ditch effort. Oh, btw I'm stuck with Windows 2000 Thanks in advance.

  I have a mouse that I absolutely love (been using them for years), A4Tech WOP-35. It has dual scrollers and 5 buttons, 3 of the buttons are programmable. I use them at work and at home. At work I am using Windows 7 Enterprise (32 bit), at home I am using Windows 7 Professional (64 bit). The drivers installed easily on my machine at work. Unfortunately, they will not install on my computer at home. When I double click on the Setup.exe, it asks me if I want to install it, and of course I click on "Yes", but nothing happens. When I say nothing happens, I mean nothing happens; it appears that it doesn't even try to install. The same thing happens when I right click on the setup.exe and select run as administrator. How can I get around this? I am guessing it is because I am running the 64 bit version of Windows.

  I have a laptop at work that originally had Windows 7 Home Premium on it. We have a tech that comes in a few times a week to do some of our support work, and we asked him to upgrade the laptop to Windows 7 Professional. Before he left he told us the upgrade didn't work and that we'd have to order a disk. Upon checking the computer it seemed he had upgraded to Windows Professional 7 N. It had not previously been Home Premium N, so I'm not exactly sure how he managed to upgrade it to an N edition. I do not understand why he didn't run the Any Time Upgrade, but that is now irrelevant. How can I change Professional N to regular Professional? I would like to avoid having to restore it back to Home if possible.

I manually added the LDAP accounts on server, and I had been successful to login the server by the LDAP username/password, but I found that the Home on Desktop of GNOME still points to a local user's Home folder, at the same time, the LDAP user's Home folder was created under /home as expected. So my question is how should I map the Home folder of desktop to the path set on LDAP server ? Thanks ! • Centrally manage Windows 7 computers without Active Directory

  I manage three Windows PCs at home using the principle of least privilege. This means that practically every other day when a new version of Java is released, I have to manually install the update using my administrative credentials on each machine. This is starting to become more work than I had expected. I would love to set up an active directory domain at home, but Microsoft has discontinued Windows home server; its replacement, Windows server 2012 essentials is much more expensive (about $500). Are there any free (preferably as in speech) that would allow me to centrally manage the software installed on each machine in a manner similar to that of active directory? I'd also like to find a way to centrally manage security settings, but I doubt there's an equivalent of group policy. Samba 4 would be an ideal solution, but according to its own developers, it is not yet stable enough for production use.

• Windows/global setting to allow only SSL when on public Wifi?

  Rather than going through each of my apps and modifying settings, or tweaking individual browser settings (I use three different browsers) or just being careful not to type non-SSL URLs into the web address bar, is there a solution at the Windows level that will prevent anything from connecting to the web from my laptop unless it's using SSL? I also have mini apps installed like Gmail checker, etc that connect to the web of their own volition using my usernames, passwords and such, so it goes beyond just web browsers. The reason I'm asking is I want to work securely on the general Internet when on public Wifi (e.g. coffee shops) without a lot of hassle or having to remember everything that needs to be locked down. When I'm back home I want to go back to full access mode using any kind of protocol on the web. If a website doesn't support SSL when I'm out in public then I just don't surf it - that's not a worry to me.

  I compiling with Solaris 10 SPARC, jdk 1.6 from Sun, Ant 1.7.1 from OpenCSW. I have no problem running hadoop 0.17.2.1 However, I have problem compiling/integrating hive with the error 'cannot find symbol', although I followed the tutorial. I have the hive source code from SVN exactly from tutorial. How can I know the hive version I compiling and how can I compile against hadoop 0.17.2.1? Please advice.   Folks, I need to maintain a C#/.Net desktop application. So, I need to set myself up with Windows(7?) and Visual Studio. My current development machine is a Macbook Pro and I would like to continue using it. Overall, I am considering the following recipe: Install VMWare Fusion or Parallels or VirtualBox for running the Windows OS Buy a version of Windows to develop on Buy Windows Developer tools Having been in the open source universe all this time, I am utterly unfamiliar with the options/packages in the Windows world. I could use some help on the following: Does the recipe above look fine, or do I need to change something? What is a good VM environment to buy/use? VirtualBox is free, but Parallels/VMWare promise Windows app that blend in with my Mac windows. Could use some help on this topic Does MSFT sell a package deal which has bare bones Windows 7 and the necessary dev tools, or do I need to buy the OS and dev tools separately? • Outlook 2007 OST File Indexing and OneNote 2007 Indexing are Broken

  I'm running Outlook 2007 under Windows 7 Home Premium RTM. My OST file was previously being properly indexed but eventually searches significantly slowed down so I suspected a problem. Searching and indexing appears broken in OneNote 2007 as well as search time is now significantly longer. I brought up the Outlook 2007 Search Options dialog and noticed that my mailbox (running from an Exchange 2007 server) wasn't listed in the "Index messages in these data files:" list box. Next I ran the Windows "Find and fix problem with windows search" wizard which reported no errors. Then I brought up the Windows Indexing Options dialog which shows Outlook listed (as shown here): then clicked Advanced and Rebuilt the index. No dice - the listbox in the Outlook 2007 dialog still didn't show my mailbox. When I clicked the Modify button in the Indexing Options dialog I see the following: When I hover over the "oneindex://..." entry, the alt text indicates "This location is currently unavailable". When I delete it and rebuild the index, this entry returns. UPDATE: Comparison of the last screenshot above with a working PC shows that on the broken PC, the lower half of the dialog lists Outlook but neither Outlook or OneNote are showing in the upper half. The working PC has Outlook and OneNote in both parts of the dialog.

• SSD - Tweaks/Recommended Configuration

  I've just purchased my first SSD drive (a 32GB MLC from Imation) without doing enough research ahead of time in the spirit of giving the new technology a shot and getting myself up to speed by empirical research rather than reading countless reviews and I'm now at a crossroads. I've built a new server to test the new drive and at first I wanted to test it with Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 but after I loaded the OS on it and it had problems loading the drivers of the motherboard I went to the internet and did more research and the more I read the more I got confused. Finally I decided to try out Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 since it supposedly has certain support for SSD drives inherent in the NT 6.1 core. Indeed I've had much better luck with the new OS and got all the drivers installed but now I still have some questions: Should I set the drive to: IDE Emulation or AHCI in the BIOS? Should I make any other changes in the BIOS (I've read on the internet that Write Through should be changed to Write Back) Should I make any other adjustments in Windows (i.e. Tweaks such as disabling prefetching or disabling the Last Accessed Timestamp on the filesystem) and if so, is there a good/reliable online resource with instructions? I'm so tired of reading through countless online posts which spend 80% of coverage on the history of SSDs and benchmarks and explanations of how SSDs work. I got that, now I'd like to know if there's anything I should actually do to make sure Windows Server 2008 R2 makes good use of the SSD.

• Boot loop that I cannot bypass

  Recently, on a laptop that I've used for a while, I had a strange issue where OS files were corrupted (device manager) and Windows 8 was hung after the login screen, so I reinstalled Windows 7 over the existing Windows 8 installation, and it worked for a couple days. Today, when I tried to use my laptop, it was stuck on a boot loop. Right after the BIOS screen, it would show a flashing underscore, then restart the computer, again and again until I removed the battery. I tried booting to a windows 7 install CD, but the same flashing underscore - reboot sequence happened when I tried. I tried moving the boot priority around (HDD first, CD/DVD first, even USB first) but nothing changed. After about an hour of tinkering with it, I listened to the HDD sounds, and it sounded like the HDD was trying to spin up, but failing (whining noise increasing in frequency that stopped and started in sync with the system restarting). I am planning to replace the HDD, but I'm still confused as to why a faulty HDD would stop the laptop from booting to my install DVD (tried it on a different computer, it booted from that CD fine). Anybody here have any idea why this might be happening?

• Adding network share as the system account breaks Win7 backup to network

  (On Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1) So I've been using Win7 backup to \192.168.0.100\Backup\main-desktop\ for awhile without issue. Yesterday I tried to setup crashplan to synchronize my dropbox folder and a network share. I then found out that crashplan, as it runs under the system account, can't see my user mapped drives. So I created a startup script net use O: \192.168.0.100\Documents /USER:192.168.0.100\username password and set it to run, on startup, after the network interface is up, as the system account. (the username & password are the same for the net use script above, the locally logged in user, and the explicit username/password entered in windows backup). I woke up this morning to find error flags from the windows backup and get "Network location cannot be used" (0x800704B3). If I disable the startup task & reboot then windows backup works fine. I'm not sure why having a mapped drive for another user is killing windows backup (same server, different folder). I can work around the issue by using another program to synchronize the two folders, but I'm completely in the dark as to why this happens (and it's 100% repeatable). Uninstalling the crashplan client doesn't change anything - it's the net use run under the system account that breaks win7 backup (to a network location).

• Intel Rapid Storage Technology (pre-OS) driver installation

  My desktop machine is built on Gigabyte GA-Z87-UD3H and Gigabyte provides the latest driver for Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST), which I installed after installing the OS. Same goes for my Lenovo Thinkpad-T420. And for both machine, checking the controller device under the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers section in Device Manager I see the driver has been updated to the latest version. I set the SATA controller to AHCI from BIOS On the desktop machine I have one WD 2TB BLACK & one WD 3TB Green I don’t use RAID, & no chance of using in near future, but according to Intel IRST improves performance in single disk scenario too. Now I have the following questions – What is the actual purpose of IRST (pre-OS install) driver that doesn’t get served with a post-OS driver that I installed? There must be some difference, otherwise there wouldn’t be a pre-OS version of the driver. Right? In the pre-OS procedure (loading the drivers at OS-installation time) after successfully completing the OS installation, do I need that post-OS driver? Because after installing from that one I got a quick launch icon that runs the IRST configuration application. Where do get that after installing the pre-OS driver? As it is “pre-OS”, when I load it at OS-installation time, does it updates anything at BIOS level or anywhere other than HDD? That’s because I’m going to dual boot Windows 7 with Windows 8.1, and after installing Windows 7 when I install Windows 8.1 & load the IRST driver for that, is there any chance of any “overwriting” or OS-incompatibility? In short, is there anything specific to follow while installing the second OS?
