• Whats new in Silverlight 4

  Thanks to the Mix for all the content showing what is coming out with Silverlight 4. Its amazing how much work Microsoft accomplished in such a short amount of time, feels like Silverlight 3 was released a few months ago, July 2009 to be exact, and now, Silverlight 4 is almost here.   "A great lathe operator commands several times the wage of an average lathe operator, but a great writer of software code is worth 10,000 times the price of an average software writer." - Bill Gates Say there's a "great" software engineer and an "average" software engineer on the same team. How can you account for one engineer being 10,000 times more productive? I can't quite fathom this, given they're both taking on their share of features, bugs and investigations, and consistently deliver with quality. Would my description possibly justify them to be above "average"? "great"? In a corporation like Microsoft, what % of software engineers are "average"? What % "great"?

  It's been quite a few years since Code Complete was published. I really love the book, I keep it in the bathroom at the office and read a little out of it once or twice a day. What developments in computer software... development need to be added to Code Complete 3e, and for the sake of reductionism, what should be removed to make room for them? Is it necessary even possible to call Code Complete Code Complete if it doesn't have language features that even Delphi has like anonymous methods and generics? Also, what languages would be more appropriate than C++ to use for a majority of code examples?

• Architecture: Bringing Value to the Table

  A recent TechTarget article features an interview with Business Architecture expert William Ulrich (Take a business-driven approach to application modernization ). In that article Ulrich offers this advice: "Moving from one technical architecture might be perfectly viable on a project by project basis, but when you're looking at the big picture and you want to really understand how to drive business value so that the business is pushing money into IT instead of IT pulling money back, you have to understand the business architecture. When we do that we're going to really be able to start bringing value to the table." In many respects that big picture view is what software architecture is all about. As an architect, your technical skills must be top-notch. But if you don't apply that technical knowledge within the larger context of moving the business forward, what are you accomplishing? • E-commerce for custom orders/customer image upload

  We have a client that needs an e-commerce site set up pretty quickly. As I have no experience with e-commerce, I am looking for some guidance. Basically, the two big features we need are: Ability for customer to add info about order (example: the name the customer wants to be put on the customizable product they ordered) Ability for customer to upload photo of product to be customized I hope this makes sense. Right now I am really looking into Shopify, but I can't tell if it does everything we need. I know you can add order notes when checking out, but not sure about image upload (maybe it can be added as an app through the API?).

• structure problem in Relational DBMS creation

  For learning and understanding purpose, I currently want to try to make a small relational DBMS with simple features like (for now) only sequential reading/writing and CREATE TABLE, INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE and DELETE management. I am currently on the "think" part of the project and I am stuck on the way to store the read data in memory. First I was thinking of putting them properly on a structure, but the problem is that tables are all different, know the type of each column is not an issue, but I am not sure C provide a way to make fully dynamic structure. My second and current idea is to make a simple char array of the required length and just get the data by order with cast. But I am not sure if it is the good way to do that part, so I wanted to ask for your opinion and advices about that. Thanks in advance for your help. nb: I hope my question is enough clear and understandable, I still lack of pratice in english

• How can I selectively update XNA GameComponents?

  I have a small 2D game I'm working on in XNA. So far, I have a player-controlled ship that operates on vector thrust and is terribly fun to spin around in circles. I've implemented this as a DrawableGameComponent and registered it with the game using game.Components.Add(this) in the Ship object constructor. How can I implement features like pausing and a menu system with my current implementation? Is it possible to set certain GameComponents to not update? Is this something for which I should even be using a DrawableGameComponent? If not, what are more appropriate uses for this?

• Getting started with ClojureScript and Google Closure

  I would like to investigate whether ClojureScript, with the associated Google Closure library is a reasonable tool to build modern, in-browser, Javascript applications. My current Javascript stack consists of jQuery, Backbone and RequireJS with the possible additions of some widgets libraries like jQueryUI or KendoUI. So it will be quite a big leap (I already know how to work in Clojure, although I have little experience). What is a good roadmap to do so? Should I learn the Google Closure library first, or can I grasp it together with ClojureScript? One thing I am concerned about is the overall application structure. Backbone is rather opinionated on how to organize your application. I am not sure whether Google Closure also includes some components to help with the design of the application. And, if this is the case, I do not know how to tell whether this structure will port to ClojureScript or a ClojureScript application will require a different organization anyway, and only use - say - the widgets and DOM manipulation features of Closure.

  In my university, we want to create Metapackages to provide all the software used in the differents careers, and signatures. ¿We can do this? I ask because recently I read this: "Note: We will not accept uploads of packages that are unmodified from their original source in Ubuntu or Debian, only packages that include your own changes. We ask that people include useful changelogs for each package so that users and other developers can understand what new features they are exploring in their work. • How to setup an encrypted voip structure?

  What is the simplest way to set up a voip structure in a Linux machine with the following features: 1) Using free software 2) For computer-to-computer calls: end-to-end encryption set by the users, unpaid, no central authority (so skype is out) 3) For computer-to-phone calls: paid or unpaid, desirable encryption on the computer side if that is even possible 4) Ability to have a number to receive calls from regular phones My research concluded that the sip protocol is the most popular. However most discussions I've read on sip are too technical and I felt it discourages the regular user who wants to just click and talk. So I put the question above and created some separate questions about privacy with sip registrars, privacy with voip suppliers, what to look for in a sip registrar, what to look for in a voip provider. As for the software, I noticed most software either don't provide encryption (eg Ekiga) or the software doesn't work nicely and the project is abandoned (eg Twinkle), so no option seemed satisfying.

• Studies on code documentation productivity gains/losses

  Hi everyone, After much searching, I have failed to answer a basic question pertaining to an assumed known in the software development world: WHAT IS KNOWN: Enforcing a strict policy on adequate code documentation (be it Doxygen tags, Javadoc, or simply an abundance of comments) adds over-head to the time required to develop code. BUT: Having thorough documentation (or even an API) brings with it productivity gains (one assumes) in new and seasoned developers when they are adding features, or fixing bugs down the road. THE QUESTION: Is the added development time required to guarantee such documentation offset by the gains in productivity down-the-road (in a strictly economical sense)? I am looking for case studies, or answers that can bring with them objective evidence supporting the conclusions that are drawn. Thanks in advance!
