  • How do I use an ADO.NET managed provider in Excel?

    I have an ADO.NET Managed Data Provider that is registered in machine.config in DbProviderFactory - It is available for use from, say, Analysis Services, so I know it is correctly registered. However, I need to be able to query the managed provider from Excel, but the managed provider doesn't appear as a choice from Data Link Properties | All Ole Db Providers. How do I get an ADO.NET Managed Data Provider to appear there, or is there another technique I need to use? Thanks in advance, Eli.

  • How to convert a python utc datetime to a local datetime using only python standard library?

    I have a python datetime instance that was created using datetime.utcnow() and persisted in database. For display, I would like to convert the datetime instance reloaded from database to local datetime using the default local timezone (e.g. as if the datetime was create using datetime.now()) How can I convert the utc datetime to a local datetime using only python standard library (e.g. no pytz dependency)? It seems one solution would be to use datetime.astimezone( tz ), but how would do you get the default local timezone?

  • DRY programming dilemma

    the situation is like this: im creating a Logger class that can write to a file but the write_to_file() function is in a helper class as a static function. i could call that function but then the Log class would be dependent to the helper class. isn't dependency bad? but if i can let it use a helper function then what is the point of having helper functions? what should one prioritize here: using helper functions and have to include this helper class everywhere (but the other 99 methods wont be useful) or just copy and paste into the Log class (but then if i have done this 100 times and then make a change i have to change in 100 places). share your thoughts and experience!

    Here's what I'm doing. I have three properties: MomsBackground, DadsBackground and ChosenBackground. When Momsbackground is selected in the program, I set the ChosenBackground string according to what item the user has clicked (either "Mom" or "Dad"). Then on Form_Load() I use a switch case for the ChosenBackground string and according to that select This.BackgroundColor to MomsBackground or DadsBackground.     I'm having some trouble unit testing the model returned by DefaultModelBinder. I want to feed in a fake form collection and check the model that it returns to make sure model properties are being bound properly. In my research, I'm not turning up -any- resources on testing the DefaultModelBinder. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I shouldn't be testing this part of MVC? Your thoughts?

  • How do I store a Java KeyStore password?

    In my web application I access a private key that is stored in a Java KeyStore. I would like to know what is the best/recommended way to store the password for the KeyStore and private key. I've considered using a properties file but that does not seem very secure for use in a production environment (storing password in a plain text file). Also, hard-coding the password in my code is not an option I'm willing to entertain. Thanks.

The problem is that GetUser returns MembershipUser and I want to return MyMembershipUser which has two additional properties FirstName and LastName. I can create a new method in my membership provider which returns MyMembershipUser but then I think it won't make any sense. How would I go about doing this?

  • How to find unneccesary dependencies in a maven multi-project?

    If you are developing a large evolving multi module maven project it seems inevitable that there are some dependencies given in the poms that are unneccesary, since they are transitively included by other dependencies. For example this happens if you have a module A that originally includes C. Later you refactor and have A depend on a module B which in turn depends on C. If you are not careful enough you'll wind up with both B and C in A's dependency list. But of course you do not need to put C into A's pom, since it is included transitively, anyway. Is there tool to find such unneccesary dependencies? (These dependencies do not actually hurt, but they might obscure your actual module structure and having less stuff in the pom is usually better. :-)

    I am developing a new project, using Autotools for my build infrastructure. I would like to subsume external dependencies into my source tree. These dependencies are using Autotools, as well. How can I configure my project's build scripts to build and link against subsumed dependencies? Though Duret-Lutz's tutorial is excellent, this situation is only briefly addressed in a few slides. I found his explanation deeply confusing. By adding the directory name of subsumed dependencies to the toplevel Makefile.am's SUBDIRS the dependency is being configured and built. It is possible to manually set include paths through CFLAGS, but how do I link against libtool .la files?

    i just tried to move from helios to maven with my gwt 2.4 application. so i began to follow the steps here: http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/wiki/WorkingWithMaven but on step 3 - installing the feature "m2e connector for build-helper-maven-plugin" i get an error from Eclipse: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.     There is a lot of talk on the internet about how Maven is bad. I have been using some features of Maven for a few years now and the most important benefit in my view is the dependency management. Maven documentation is less than adequate, but generally when I need to accomplish something I figure it once and than it works (for example, I remember when I implemented signing the jars.) I don’t think that Maven is great, but it does solve some problems that without it would be a genuine pain. So, why does Maven has such a bad rep and what problems with Maven can I expect in the future? Maybe there are much better alternatives that I don't know about? (For example, I never looked Ivy in detail.) NOTE: This is not an attempt to cause an argument. It is an attempt to clear the FUD.

    I'm having trouble retrieving 2 artifacts in my Maven/Java/Google App Engine project: com.google.appengine.orm:datanucleus-appengine:jar:1.0.7.final com.google.appengine:appengine-api-1.0-sdk:jar:1.3.4 There's a similar question posted, but each answer brings me back to the same error message. More detail I don't know if it is relevant, but rather than a version number, my original dependency for DataNucleus contained a variable. I am using Eclipse. <groupId>org.datanucleus</groupId> <artifactId>datanucleus-core</artifactId> <version>${datanucleus.version}</version> <scope>runtime</scope> I did not include my stack trace in Maven for brevity's sake.   • What would cause my Silverlight .xap to quadruple in size suddenly?

    I've been working on a Silverlight application. I just noticed that the .xap file is now four times as big as it was, what could have caused that? Here's some other info: there seems to now be many more language settings in the bin/Release directory I checked "Reduce size of .xap" in under Properties/Silverlight but that just brought it down from 1300 to 1200.     Hi. We are porting a simple Java application between Tandem NonStop systems, from G-Series to H-Series. Java version is 1.5.0_02. When performing basic I/O tasks like getting output stream from or opening a client socket, we receive exceptions like java.io.IOException: Value out of range or java.net.SocketException: Value out of range ("value out of range" is Tandem native jargon for, well, quite everything I suppose). When I try to resolve the AccountController, I get the following error: No scope matching the expression 'value(Autofac.Builder.RegistrationBuilder`3+<c__DisplayClass0[...]).lifetimeScopeTag.Equals(scope.Tag)' is visible from the scope in which the instance was requested. Do I have my dependency lifetimes set up incorrectly?

    Hi, I've always used Spring's dependency injection to get datasource objects and use them in my DAOs, but now, I have to write an app without that. With Spring I can write something like this: <bean id="dataSource" class="org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource"> <property name="driverClassName" value="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver" /> <property name="url" value="jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1/app?characterEncoding=UTF-8" /> <property name="username" value="u" /> <property name="password" value="p" /> </bean> But how can I use datasource in my DAOs without Spring or anything? I'm using servlets and JSPs only. Performance is very important factor. Thanks in advance!

  • Is there a way to automatically make a makefile from a template toolkit template?

    My static web pages are built from a huge bunch of templates which are inter-included using Template Toolkit's "import" and "include", so page.html looks like this: [% INCLUDE top %] [% IMPORT middle %] Then top might have even more files included. I have very many of these files, and they have to be run through to create the web pages in various languages (English, French, etc., not computer languages). This is a very complicated process and when one file is updated I would like to be able to automatically remake only the necessary files, using a makefile or something similar. Are there any tools which can parse template toolkit templates and create a dependency list for use in a makefile? Or are there better ways to automate this process?

    Ok so I'm making a "simple" web app using the technologies from the topic, recently I found http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/flex_hibernate.html so I'm following it and I try to apply it to my app, the only difference being I'm working on a Mac and I'm using MAMP for the database (so no command line for me). The thing is I'm having some trouble with retrieving/connecting to the database. I have the remoting-config.xml, persistance.xml, a News.java class (my Entity), a NewsService.java class, a News.as class - all just like in the tutorial. I have of course this line in one of my .mxmls: <mx:RemoteObject id="loaderService" destination="newsService" result="handleLoadResult(event)" fault="handleFault(event)" showBusyCursor="true" /> And my remoting-config.xml looks like this (well part of it): <destination id="newsService"> <properties><source>com.gamelist.news.NewsService</source></properties> </destination> NewsService has a method: public List<News> getLatestNews() { EntityManagerFactory emf = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory(PERSISTENCE_UNIT); EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager(); Query findLatestQuery = em.createNamedQuery("news.findLatest"); List<News> news = findLatestQuery.getResultList(); return news; } And the named query is in the News class: @Entity @Table(name="GLT_NEWS") @NamedQueries({ @NamedQuery(name="news.findLatest", query="from GLT_NEWS order by new_date_added limit 5 ") }) The handledLoadResult looks like this: private function handleLoadResult(ev:ResultEvent):void { newsList = ev.result as ArrayCollection; newsRecords = newsList.length; } Where: [Bindable] private var newsList:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(); But when I try to trigger: loaderService.getLatestNews(); nothing happens, newsList is empty. Basically the question is how am I suppose to debug this thing so I can find the mistake I'm making?
