• How to search for duplicate values in a huge text file having around Half Million records

  I have an input txt file which has data in the form of records (each row is a record and represents more or less like a DB table) and I need to find for duplicate values. For example: Rec1: ACCOUNT_NBR_1*NAME_1*VALUE_1 Rec2: ACCOUNT_NBR_2*NAME_2*VALUE_2 Rec3: ACCOUNT_NBR_1*NAME_3*VALUE_3 In the above set, the Rec1 and Rec2 are considered to be duplicates as the ACCOUNT NUMBERS are same(ACCOUNT_NBR1). Note: The input file shown above is a delimiter type file (the delimiter being *) however the file type can also be a fixed length file where each column starts and ends with a specified positions. I am currently doing this with the following logic: Loop thru each ACCOUNT NUMBER Loop thru each line of the txt file and record and check if this is repeated. If repeated record the same in a hashtable. End End And I am using 'Pattern' & 'BufferedReader' java API's to perform the above task. But since it is taking a long time, I would like to know a better way of handling it. Thanks, Shibu

• Getting animated gif data in c or c++

  I'm trying to get the frames (properly decoded) and the frames delay times from an animated gif. I've opened up the code to gifsicle and have also tried lungif but I'm not accustomed to c code and I'm having a difficult time following the logic. I've also tried other examples and I've gotten one to work but it didn't do the proper LZW decoding. Can anyone give me a quick example of how to do this? I'm building this app in xcode and trying to get an NSArray of the image frames. Thanks.

  I am trying to run a stored procedure with a while loop in it using Aqua Data Studio 6.5 and as soon as the SP starts Aqua Data starts consuming an increasing amount of my CPU's memory which makes absolutely no sense to me because everything should be off on the Sybase server I am working with. I have commented out and tested every piece of the SP and narrowed the issue down to the while loop.   ASP.net MVC How to run multiple instances of the same app at the same time in different subdomains? I have a dozen or so subdomains. sub1.website.com sub2.website.com and the folder structure like this \website\sub1 \website\sub2 If i need to run the same app for all of the subdomains, what would be the best appoach? Host is in the root \website\ and have it figure out where to look based on the "user"? (i imagine i need to implement de logic in the code) OR Just copy the app in each of the subdomains, and have the app "not knowing" that it is actually an instance? (this would mean that when i update the app, i have to copy it everywhere) What other approaches are there to this kind of issue? Each app will use a different database name so that will need to we coded in somekind of external file.

  I have a simple SEO task. There's a City model and a Brand model, and I have to create 1st-level URLs for both (e.g. site.com/honda and site.com/boston). What's the preferred routing/controller combination to do this in Rails? I can only think of map.connect '/:id', :controller => 'catchall', :action => 'index' class CatchallController < ApplicationController def index if City.exists?(:slug => params[:id]) @city = City.find_by_slug!(params[:id]) render 'cities/show' else @brand = Brand.find_by_slug!(params[:id]) render 'brands/show' end end end but it seems to be very un-Rails to put such logic into the controller. The gui itself and all the logic behind it work.It is just this time depended color-changing that does not. I have read, that swing is not thread safe, but all the examples I found showed me how to start another thread (for example in the background) but never how to stop the current swing-gui thread.

I am asking about stored procedures when we send few parameters to one stored procedure and this procedure execute number of other stored procedures in the database, will get data from stored procedures and send data to others. In other words, will make the logic happen on the database side using sequence of functions and stored procedures. Is that behavior or something the same already exist on NOSQL databases, or its completely different and i am thinking in the wrong way?

  I am reading Effective C# by Bill Wagner. In Item 14 - Minimize Duplicate Initialization Logic, he shows the following example of using the new optional parameters feature in a constructor: public MyClass(int initialCount = 0, string name = "") Notice that he used "" instead of string.Empty. He comments: You'll note [in an example above] that the second constructor specified "" for the default value on the name parameter, rather than the more customary string.Empty. That's because string.Empty is not a compile-time constant. It is a static property defined in the string class. Because it is not a compile constant, you cannot use it for the default value for a parameter. If we cannot use the string.Empty static in all situations, then doesn't that defeat the purpose of it? I thought that we would use it to be sure that we have a system-independent means of referring to the empty string. Is my understanding wrong? Thanks.

• In what circumstances can large pages produce a speedup ?

  Modern x86 CPUs have the ability to support larger page sizes than the legacy 4K (ie 2MB or 4MB), and there are OS facilities (Linux, Windows) to access this functionality. The Microsoft link above states large pages "increase the efficiency of the translation buffer, which can increase performance for frequently accessed memory". Which isn't very helpful in predicting whether large pages will improve any given situation. I'm interested in concrete, preferably quantified, examples of where moving some program logic (or a whole application) to use huge pages has resulted in some performance improvement. Anyone got any success stories ? There's one particular case I know of myself: using huge pages can dramatically reduce the time needed to fork a large process (presumably as the number of TLB records needing copying is reduced by a factor on the order of 1000). I'm interested in whether huge pages can also benefit more mundane applications though.

  I'm creating a prototype for a java web application. Frontend is a Swing-based java applet. Backend should be a type of web-service, that is called by applet. Backend should run inside a servlet container and should have its own security (username/password) database. I know, that Tomcat has its own user database (realm), but the app should have own. Web-services, in turn, carrying out app logic and database access (via Hibernate). I'm a newbie for a web development and I'm getting lost in a huge amount of the java web frameworks. Even just reading 'introduction' and 'getting started' documents takes a lot of time. So I need an advice which framework(s) are suitable for the task and not very complex for a quick start. So for for-loops and if-statements i have to have braces, even though i only want to span one line. Furthermore there is more i have to change if i want to use a Javascript Library like underscore.js.   I need to create a toplist in the page footer on a site that I'm building. The footer is created in the default SiteMesh layout template (views/layouts/main.gsp). In order to create the toplist access to the database is needed, so I've encapsulated all logic needed for the toplist creation in a service class (services/FooService). Please note that while services are usually accessed from the controller layer, in this case the default layout template (views/layouts/main.gsp) is not generated from a controller. Can the layout view (views/layouts/main.gsp) access a service class? How? Is this the correct design decision? If not, what is a better encapsulation and how do I interact with said encapsulation from the layout view (views/layouts/main.gsp)?

  Hi Business logic is coded in pl/sql packages procedures and functions. Java programs call pl/sql packages procedures and functions to do database work. pl/sql programs store exceptions into Oracle tables whenever an exception is raised. How would my java programs get the exceptions since the exception instead of being propagated from pl/sql to java is getting persisted to a oracle table and the procs/functions just return 1 or 0. Sorry folks i should have added this constraint much earlier and avoided this confusion. As with many legacy projects we don't have the freedom to modify the stored procedures.

  I have two sets of drop downs for start date and end date. Each date is created by selecting a month, day, and year from 3 separate drop downs. I currently have RequiredFieldValidators on all the drop downs (which just shows a * if nothing has been selected yet), but I need to validate that the end date is greater than the start date. I can take care of the logic behind comparing the dates, but in terms of the validation method used, can someone help me out (I essentially need to validate 6 drop downs all at one time)? I tried a custom validation using client side javascript but couldn't get it to work. Can you even validate multiple drop downs using ASP.NET validation controls? (which is what I would like to do - I can always write the javascript, but was trying to stay away from this). Thanks.

• Strange margin-behaviour with Sifr spans in link (screens)

  I'm making a menu and it's supposed to look like picture nr 1 on this link. However, at this moment, it looks like picture nr 2. There's no logic in this behaviour, since all three elements have the same css-attributes. Moreover, let's change the word "Reiki" to "Psychotherapie" and see what happens... (picture nr 3) For some reason the word "Reiki" ignores certain attributes. This is not a problem when Sifr is turned off. I guess I'll need some extra CSS to solve this (messing with paddings, heights or margins on that specific element doesn't give any result. It just won't budge). Unless someone knows a more elegant solution?

Later, the user deletes one of the contact entities that was a recipient of the message. Our application should delete the appropriate Contact entity, but we want to preserve the original recipient list for the message that was sent for the user's records. In essence, we want a snapshot of the message entity at the time it was sent. If we naively delete the contact entity, though, we lose snapshot integrity; if not, we are left with an invalid key.   I have a table in MySQL of contact information ; first name, last name, address, etc. I would like to run a query on this table that will return only rows with first and last name combinations which appear in the table more than once. I do not want to group the "duplicates" (which may only be duplicates of the first and last name, but not other information like address or birthdate) - I want to return all the "duplicate" rows so I can look over the results and determine if they are dupes or not. This seemed like it would be a simple thing to do, but it has not been. Every solution I can find either groups the dupes and gives me a count only (which is not useful for what I need to do with the results) or doesn't work at all. Is this kind of logic even possible in a query ? Should I try and do this in Python or something?

  Hi there, I am looking for an alternative to using an object/variable in global scope -- I would like to associate key/value pairs with specific DOM elements (eg, a DIV), so that I can use them as input for logic that processes other elements (eg, child elements of said DIV). I tried something naive like: $('[foo=bar]').key='value' , and $('[foo=bar]')[key]='value', but it puked. Doing something like: var foobar = $('[foo=bar]'); foobar.key = 'value' -- works, but the new property/value only affects the new object (ie, foobar, not $('[foo=bar]')) Most likely there's something terribly basic I am overlooking.   I'm trying to figure out the best way to make an image rotate along with a user's finger dragging it left or right. I want to try and match the rate a user's finger is moving with the rate the image is rotating. I've got the basic setup for my application going, with the menus and whatnot I want to have, and that's all running great on the emulator, I'm just not sure how to approach this part. I can code all the logic I need for my app, I'm just not doing to well designing the UI, I have a picture in mind, I've actually made a couple mock images of it, I just can't figure out how to get it going in Android, and any help would be appreciated.
