  • Setting up Rails to work with sqlserver

    Ok I followed the steps for setting up ruby and rails on my Vista machine and I am having a problem connecting to the database. Contents of database.yml development: adapter: sqlserver database: APPS_SETUP Host: WindowsVT06\SQLEXPRESS Username: se Password: paswd Run rake db:migrate from myapp directory ---------- rake aborted! no such file to load -- deprecated ADO I have dbi 0.4.0 installed and have created the ADO folder in C:\Ruby\lib\ruby\site_ruby\1.8\DBD\ADO I got the ado.rb from the dbi 0.2.2 What else should I be looking at to fix the issue connecting to the database? Please don't tell me to use MySql or Sqlite or Postgres. *UPDATE* I have installed the activerecord-sqlserver-adapter gem from --source=http://gems.rubyonrails.org Still not working.     Server: Poweredge r620 OS: RHEL 6.4 Kernel: 2.6.32-358.18.1.el6.x86_64 I'm experiencing application alarms in my production environment. Critical CPU hungry processes are being starved of resources and causing a processing backlog. The problem is happening on all the 12th Generation Dell servers (r620s) in a recently deployed cluster. As near as I can tell, instances of this happening are matching up to peak CPU utilization, accompanied by massive amounts of "power limit notification" spam in dmesg. I don't think that's what is happening though. Dell suggested that the author try using the Performance profile, but that didn't help. He ended up applying some settings in Dell's guide for configuring a server for low latency environments and one of those settings (or a combination thereof) seems to have fixed the problem. Kernel.org bug #36182 notes that power-limit interrupt debugging was enabled by default, which is causing performance degradation in scenarios where CPU voltage regulation is kicking in. A RHN KB article (RHN login required) mentions a problem impacting PE r620 and r720 servers not running the Performance profile, and recommends an update to a kernel released two weeks ago. ...Except we are running the Performance profile... Everything I can find online is running me in circles here. What's the heck is going on?

    I use Net_Gearman from PECL, Gearmand 1.1.11 and Gearman Manager. Every time I add background job, I can see new worker listed with no Function, nor Id in Ggearman-Monitor: If I add many messages in the bash loop, after some time it becomes very slow. for i in $(seq 0 9999); do php Client.php && echo $i; done Yesterday, the situation was even worse - I had many error messages in Gearmand log regarding Too many open files and once I added --file-descriptors=49152 as an option and swithched to 1.1.11 from 1.0.6, these errors gone.   • Reciving UDP packets on iPhone

    I'm trying to establish UDP communication between a MAC OS and an iPod through Wi-Fi, at this point I'm able to send packets from the iPod and I can see those packets have the right MAC and ip addresses (I'm using wireshark to monitor the network) but the MAC receives the packets only when the wireshark is on, otherwise recvfrom() returns -1. When I try to transmit from MAC to iPhone I have the same result, I can see the packets are sent but the iPhone doesn't seem to get them. Modifying an existing plugin didn't work for me either.

  • 401 Using Multiple Authentication methods IE 10 only

    I am not sure if this is more of a coding issue or server setup issue so I've posted it on stackoverflow and here... On our production site we've run into an issue that is specific to Internet Explorer 10. I am using jQuery doing an ajax POST to a web service on the same domain and in IE10 I am getting a 401 response, IE9 works perfectly fine. I should mention that we have mirrored code in another area of our site and it works perfectly fine in IE10. The only difference between the two areas is that one is under a subdomain and the other is at the root level. www.my1stdomain.com vs. portal.my2nddomain.com The directory structure on the server for these are: \my1stdomain\webservice\name\service.aspx \portal\webservice\name\service.aspx Inside of the \portal\ and \my1stdomain\ folders I have a page that does an ajax call, both pages are identical. $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: '/webservice/name/service.aspx/function', cache: false, contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8', dataType: 'json', data: '{ "json": "data" }', success: function() { }, error: function() { } }); I've verified permissions are the same on both folders on the server side. I've applied a workaround fix of placing the <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" value="IE=9"> to force compatibility view (putting IE into compatibility mode fixes the issue). This seems to be working in IE10 on Windows 7, however IE 10 on Windows 8 still sees the same issue. These pages are classic asp with the headers that are being included, also there are no other meta tags being used. The doctype is being specified as <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> on the portal page and <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> on the main domain. UPDATE1 I used Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 on the server to capture the request.   • Should we develop a custom membership provider in this case?

I wont accept an answer until I can add a bounty so feel free to go ahead and answer now Summary Long story short, we've been tasked with gutting the authentication and authorization parts of a fairly old and bloated asp.net application that previously had all of these components written from scratch. Since our application isn't a typical one, and none of us have experience in asp.net's built in membership provider stuff, we're not sure if we should roll our own authentication and authorization again or if we should try to work within the asp.net membership provider mindset and develop our own membership provider. Our Application We have a fairly old asp.net application that gets installed at customer locations to service clients on a LAN. Admins create users (users do not sign up) and depending on the install, we may have the software integrated with LDAP. Currently, the LDAP integration bulk-imports the users to our database and when they login, it authenticates against LDAP so we dont have to manage their passwords. Nothing amazing there. Admins can assign users to 1 group and they can change the authorization of that group to manage access to various parts of the software. Groups are maintained by Admins (web based UI) and as said earlier, granted / denied permissions to certain functionality within the application. All this was completely written from the ground up without using any of the built in .net authorization or authentication. We literally have IsLoggedIn() methods that check for login and redirect to our login page if they aren't. Our Rewrite We've been tasked to integrate more tightly with LDAP, they want us to tie groups in our application to groups (or whatever types of containers that LDAP uses) in LDAP so that when a customer opt's to use our LDAP integration, they dont have to manage their users in LDAP AND in our application. The new way, they will simply create users in LDAP, add them to Groups in LDAP and our application will see that they belong to the appropriate LDAP group and authenticate and authorize them. In addition, we've been granted the go ahead to completely rip out the User authentication and authorization code and completely re-do it. Our Problem The problem is that none of us have any experience with asp.net membership provider functionality. The little bit of exposure I have to it makes me worry that it was not intended to be used for an application such as ours. Though, developing our own ASP.NET Membership Provider and Role Manager sounds like it would be a great experience and most likely the appropriate thing to do. Basically, I'm looking for advice, should we be using the ASP.NET Membership provider & Role Management API or should we continue to roll our own? I know this decision will be influenced by our requirements so I'm going over them below Our Requirements Just a quick n dirty list Maintain the ability to have a db of users and authenticate them and give admins (only, not users) the ability to CRUD users Allow the site to integrate with LDAP, when this is chosen, they don't want any users stored in the DB, only the relationship between Groups as they exist in our app / db and the Groups/Containers as they exist in LDAP. .net 3.5 is being used (mix of asp.net webforms and asp.net mvc) Has to work in ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC (shouldn't be a problem I'm guessing) This can't be user centric, administrators need to be the only ones that CRUD (or import via ldap) users and groups We have to be able to Auth via LDAP when its configured to do so I always try to monitor my questions closely so feel free to ask for more info. Also, as a general summary of what I'm looking for in an answer is just. "You should/shouldn't use xyz, here's why".   • Motherboard/PSU crippling USB and Sata

    I very recently bought a new desktop computer. The motherboard is: Z77MX-D3H and the power supply is ocz zs series 550w. The issue I have is that once I boot to the operating system (I have tried with fedora and Ubuntu with kernels 2.6.38 - 3.4.0), my hard drive (2.5" Magnetic) occasionally makes a power switch noise and it resets. Needless to say, when this drive is the OS drive, the OS crashes. I also have a SSD that works fine with the same OS configurations, but if I have the magnetic hard drive attached as second drive, it works erratically and the reconnects result in corrupted data. Also the issue of the usb reconnects is less frequent if the hard drive is plugged before I switch on the computer. Does anybody have some advice as to what I could do? Which is the faulty part/s that I should replace? As for me, I really don't know if to point my finger to the PSU or the Motherboard (I have updated to the latest firmware and checked the BIOS settings several times). EDIT: The reconnects are happening both in the Sata connected drives and the USBX connected drives.

  • Large number of soft page faults when assigning a TJpegImage to a TBitmap

    I have a Delphi 6 Pro application that processes incoming jpeg frames from a streaming video server. The code works but I recently noticed that it generates a huge number of soft page faults over time. After doing some investigation, the page faults appear to be coming from one particular graphics operation. Note, the uncompressed bitmaps in question are 320 x 240 or about 300 KB in size so it's not due to the handling of large images. The number of page faults being generated isn't tolerable. Over an hour it can easily top 1000000 page faults. I created a stripped down test case that executes the code I have included below on a timer, 10 times a second. The page faults appear to happen when I try to assign the TJpegImage to a TBitmap in the GetBitmap() method. I know this because I commented out that line and the page faults do not occur. The assign() triggers a decompression operation on the part of TJpegImage as it pushes the decompressed bits into a newly created bitmap that GetBitmap() returns. When I run Microsoft's pfmon utility (page fault monitor), I get a huge number of soft page fault error lines concerning RtlFillMemoryUlong, so it appears to happen during a memory buffer fill operation. One puzzling note. The summary part of pfmon's report where it shows which DLL caused what page fault does not show any DLL names in the far left column. I tried this on another system and it happens there too. Can anyone suggest a fix or a workaround? Here's the code.   • Error using Session in IIS7

    After deployment of my website to IIS I'm getting a following error message when trying to access session: Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. Please also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the \\ section in the application configuration. I access it in Page_Load or PreRender events (I tried both versions). With VS Dev Server it works without a problem. I tried both InProc an SessionState storage, 1 and multiple woker processes. I added a enableSessionState = "true" to my webpage explicitly.   • sshd running but no PID file

    I'm recently started using monit to monitor the status of sshd on my CentOS 5.4 server. This works fine, but every so often monit reports that sshd is no longer running. This isn't true - I am still able to login to the server via ssh, however I note the following: There is no longer any PID file at /var/run/sshd.pid - after a reboot this file exists. Once it is gone, restarting sshd via service sshd restart does not create the PID file. sudo service sshd status reports openssh-daemon is stopped - again, restarting sshd does not change this, but a reboot does. sudo service sshd stop reports failed, presumably because of the missing PID file. Any idea what is going on? Update sudo netstat -lptun gives the following output relating to port 22 tcp 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 20735/sshd Killing the process with this PID as suggested by @Henry and then starting sshd via service results in service sshd status recognising the process by PID again. Would still like to understand this better. RPM verify suggested by a couple of answerers shows this: sudo rpm -vV openssh openssh-server openssh-clients | grep 'S\.5' S.5....T c /etc/pam.d/sshd S.5....T c /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/pam.d/sshd has the following contents: #%PAM-1.0 auth include system-auth account required pam_nologin.so account include system-auth password include system-auth session optional pam_keyinit.so force revoke session include system-auth #session required pam_loginuid.so Should that last line be commented out?     I have a peculiar problem that I just can't seem to find an explanation. I'm working on an AngularJS site for our family and am integrating data from various web services. Currently I am working on the photos section which will integrate in photos from our Flickr account. I have a main page which lists the various photo sets and displays the set's primary photo along with the title. (Note: I'm using the Flickr 'extras' parameter to return the primary photo's URL in the API calls.) <div data-ng-repeat="p in vm.photoSets"> <a ng-href="#/photos/{{p.id}}"> <img ng-src="{{p.primary_photo_extras.url_s}}"></img> </a> <h4>{{p.title._content}}</h4> </div> When clicking on the photo, the routing will display a page with a list of all the photos from that set, showing the image and the title. <div data-ng-repeat="p in vm.photoSetData.photo"> <a ng-href="#/photos/{{vm.photoSetId}}/{{p.id}}" <img ng-src="{{p.url_s}}"></img> </a> <h4>{{p.title}}</h4> </div> Now, here's where the problem is occuring. Also, the images show up on the first page, but not on the second, even though one of the images on the second page is the same image URL as on the first page. Even going directly to the second page, bypassing the first page, still fails. Any ideas on how to fix this? It would be nice to test locally without having to upload to the server each time I make a change. Update: I have shut off the $sce security to see if that was causing the issue. Although it resulted in turning the error off, the files still don't load on the local test server. I have used the developer tools' network monitor and it doesn't even show an attempt to retrieve the files. AngularJS appears to shut down the retrieval, although the correct path shows up in the DOM.

  • Arduino crashes when sending bytes from Java [on hold]

    I used the sample program from the arduino website in order to send and receive data via serial to my Arduino one. However, for some reason, even when I try to send only one byte, the Arduino crashes after a while. It doesn't happen if I send the chars manually via the IDE's own serial monitor.   • Need help identiying a nasty rootkit in Windows

    I have a nasty rootkit that not tools seem to be able to idenity. I know for sure it's a rootkit, but I can figure out which rootkit it is. Here's what I gathered so far: It creates multiple copies of itself in %HOME%\Local Settings\Temp with names like Q.EXE, IAJARZ.exe, etc., and install them as hidden services. These EXE have SysInternals identifiers in them so they're definitely rootkits. It hooked very deep in the system, including file read/write, security policies, registry read/write, and possibly WinSock/TCP/IP. When going to Sophos.com to download their software, the rootkit inject something called Microsoft Ajax Tootkit into the page, which injects code into the email submission form in order to redirect it. (EDIT: I might have panicked. Looks like Sophos does use an AJAZ email form, their form is just broken on Chrome so it looked like a mail form injection attack, the link is http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/virus-removal-tool/download.aspx ) Super-Antispyware found a lot of spyware cookies, in the name of .kaspersky.2o7.net, etc. (just chedk 2o7.net, looks like it's a legit ad company) I tried comparing DNS lookup from the infected systems and from system in other physical locations, no DNS redirections it seems. I used dd to copy the MBR and compared it with the MBR provided by ms-sys package, no differences so it's not infecting MBR. No antivirus or rootkit scanner be able to identify it. Most of them can't even find it. I tried scanning, in-situ (normal mode), in safe mode, and boot to linux live CD. Scanners used: Avast, Sophos anti rootkit, Kasersky TDSSKiller, GMER, RootkitRevealer, and many others. Kaspersky reported some unsigned system files that ought to be signed (e.g. tcpip.sys), and reported a number of MD5 mismatches. But otherwise couldn't identify anything based on signature. When running Sysinternal RootkitRevealer and Sophos AntiRootkit, CPU usage goes up to 100% and gets stucked. The Rootkit is blocking them. When trying running/installing HiJackThis, RootkitRevealer and some other scanners, it tells me system security policy prevent running/installing it. The list of malicious acitivities go on and on. here's a sample of logs from all my scans. In particular, aswSnx.SYS, apnenfno.sys and PROCMON20.SYS has a huge number of hooks. It's hard to tell if the rootkit replaced legit program files like aswSnx.SYS (from Avast) and PROCMON20.SYS (from Sysinternal Process Monitor). I can't find whether apnenfno.sys is from a legit program. Help to identify it is appreciated. Enabling optimisation, i.e. building the library with -O2 or –O1, I am facing strange segfaults when calling into the shared library via ctypes. Disabling optimisation (-O0), everything works out as expected, as is the case when linking the library to a c-program directly (optimised or not).   • Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

    I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions.   • What does a WinForm application need to be designed for usability, and be robust, clean, and profess

    One of the principal problems impeding productivity in software implementation is the classic conundrum of “reinventing the wheel”. Of late I am a .NET developer and even the wonderful wizardry of .NET and Visual Studio covers only a portion of this challenging issue. Below I present my initial thoughts both on what is available and what should be available from .NET on a WinForm, focusing on good usability. That is, aspects of an application exposed to the user and making the user experience easier and/or better. (I do include a couple items not visible to the user because I feel strongly about them, such as diagnostics.) I invite you to contribute to these lists. LIST A: Components provided by .NET These are substantially complete components provided by .NET, i.e. those requiring at most trivial coding to use. “About” dialog -- add it with a couple clicks then customize. Persist settings across invocations -- .NET has the support; just use a few lines of code to glue them together. Migrate settings with a new version -- a powerful one, available with one line of code. Tooltips (and infotips) -- .NET includes just plain text tooltips; third-party libraries provide richer ones. Diagnostic support -- TraceSources, TraceListeners, and more are built-in. Internationalization -- support for tailoring your app to languages other than your own. LIST B: Components not provided by .NET These are not supplied at all by .NET or supplied only as rudimentary elements requiring substantial work to be realized. Splash screen -- a small window present during program startup with your logo, loading messages, etc. Tip of the day -- a mini-tutorial presented one bit at a time each time the user starts your app. Check for available updates -- facility to query a server to see if the user is running the latest version of your app, then provide a simple way to upgrade if a new version is found. Maximize to multiple monitors -- the canonical window allows you to maximize to a single monitor only; in my apps I allow maximizing across multiple monitors with a click. Taskbar notifier -- flash the taskbar when your backgrounded app has new info for the user. Options dialogs -- multi-page dialogs letting the user customize the app settings to his/her own preferences. Progress indicator -- for long running operations give the user feedback on how far there is left to go. Memory gauge -- an indicator (either absolute or percentage) of how much memory is used by your app. LIST C: Stylistic and/or tiny bits of functionality This list includes bits of functionality that are too tiny to merit being called a component, along with stylistic concerns (that admittedly do overlap with the Windows User Experience Interaction Guidelines). Design a form for resizing -- unless you are restricting your form to be a fixed size, use anchors and docking so that it does what is reasonable when enlarged or shrunk by the user. Set tab order on a form -- repeated tab presses by the user should advance from field to field in a logical order rather than the default order in which you added fields. Adjust controls to be aware of operating modes -- When starting a background operation with, for example, a “Go” button, disable that “Go” button until the operation completes. Provide access keys for all menu items (per UXGuide). Provide shortcut keys for commonly used menu items (per UXGuide). Set up some (global or important or common) shortcut keys without associating to menu items. Allow some menu items to be invoked with or without modifier keys (shift, control, alt) where the modifier key is useful to vary the operation slightly. Hook up Escape and Enter on child forms to do what is reasonable. Decorate any library classes with documentation-comments and attributes -- this allows Visual Studio to leverage them for Intellisense and property descriptions. Spell check your code!   • Centering contentplaceholders

    I have a contentplaceholder which needs to be centered (as close to absolute as possible) to the center of the page. The issue I am having is when, the browser moves to different resolutions the centering is thrown off. I have tried using divs and tables. I have switched out the precent with em units, and still no workie. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
