  • Should we develop a custom membership provider in this case?

I wont accept an answer until I can add a bounty so feel free to go ahead and answer now Summary Long story short, we've been tasked with gutting the authentication and authorization parts of a fairly old and bloated asp.net application that previously had all of these components written from scratch. Since our application isn't a typical one, and none of us have experience in asp.net's built in membership provider stuff, we're not sure if we should roll our own authentication and authorization again or if we should try to work within the asp.net membership provider mindset and develop our own membership provider. Our Application We have a fairly old asp.net application that gets installed at customer locations to service clients on a LAN. Admins create users (users do not sign up) and depending on the install, we may have the software integrated with LDAP. Currently, the LDAP integration bulk-imports the users to our database and when they login, it authenticates against LDAP so we dont have to manage their passwords. Nothing amazing there. Admins can assign users to 1 group and they can change the authorization of that group to manage access to various parts of the software. Groups are maintained by Admins (web based UI) and as said earlier, granted / denied permissions to certain functionality within the application. All this was completely written from the ground up without using any of the built in .net authorization or authentication. We literally have IsLoggedIn() methods that check for login and redirect to our login page if they aren't. Our Rewrite We've been tasked to integrate more tightly with LDAP, they want us to tie groups in our application to groups (or whatever types of containers that LDAP uses) in LDAP so that when a customer opt's to use our LDAP integration, they dont have to manage their users in LDAP AND in our application. The new way, they will simply create users in LDAP, add them to Groups in LDAP and our application will see that they belong to the appropriate LDAP group and authenticate and authorize them. In addition, we've been granted the go ahead to completely rip out the User authentication and authorization code and completely re-do it. Our Problem The problem is that none of us have any experience with asp.net membership provider functionality. The little bit of exposure I have to it makes me worry that it was not intended to be used for an application such as ours. Though, developing our own ASP.NET Membership Provider and Role Manager sounds like it would be a great experience and most likely the appropriate thing to do. Basically, I'm looking for advice, should we be using the ASP.NET Membership provider & Role Management API or should we continue to roll our own? I know this decision will be influenced by our requirements so I'm going over them below Our Requirements Just a quick n dirty list Maintain the ability to have a db of users and authenticate them and give admins (only, not users) the ability to CRUD users Allow the site to integrate with LDAP, when this is chosen, they don't want any users stored in the DB, only the relationship between Groups as they exist in our app / db and the Groups/Containers as they exist in LDAP. .net 3.5 is being used (mix of asp.net webforms and asp.net mvc) Has to work in ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC (shouldn't be a problem I'm guessing) This can't be user centric, administrators need to be the only ones that CRUD (or import via ldap) users and groups We have to be able to Auth via LDAP when its configured to do so I always try to monitor my questions closely so feel free to ask for more info. Also, as a general summary of what I'm looking for in an answer is just. "You should/shouldn't use xyz, here's why".   • Is it possible to add custom fields to a Drupal taxonomy term?

    I'd like to add a date field to a drupal taxonomy term, alongside the default "title" and "description" Is there some technique/php/module that lets me do this? Is it possible to do with CCK?? I need to be able to display the new field in the same view presenting the content nodes referencing the term. At the moment, I've added a date field to the content nodes with CCK, and it's displayed by the view. But that's not exactly what I'm going for, I just want to update one date per term.

  • Why am I getting a TypeLoadException when defining a custom profile?

    I'm writing a .NET command-line application that will migrate users from an existing database into aspnetdb. To simplify the user-specific settings, I'm using the profile class that Joel Spolsky wrote about here. It works great in the ASP.NET MVC website, but for some reason it's throwing a TypeLoadException when being used from this new application. I'm not sure why the framework is trying to load the new class from System.Web.

Question: How can you let EditorFor display DropDownLists?   • Google Maps Rollover Problem in a Flex Website

    Hi, I'm using Google Maps in my Flex site to create a map. I've got polygons overlayed on the map. When the user rolls over a polygon an infowindow opens identifying the area and the fill Alpha of the area is set to 0. On roll-out, the info window is removed and the fill Alpha is returned to the default, 0.2. The polygons display and the InfoWindow is added and removed correctly. The problem is that the change in fill alpha only occurs on the very last polygon in the list. So for example, if I have polygons A, B, C, and D. If I rollover A, then A's alpha should change. But, instead D's alpha changes. No matter which polygon I rollover, the last polygon's alpha changes. It's weird, because the infoWindows behave correctly on rollover. So, if I rollover polygon A, the correct information for InfoWindow A appears.   • What is the most Word-like ASP.NET custom control that you can buy?

    We are looking to implement a rich-text box in an ASP.NET application and our requirements are specific to using the "Track Changes" features of Microsoft Word. The closest thing we found in the RadEditor by Telerik. This is a nice control that has a "Track Changes" button and will give you the ability to track the changes from the text in the box to now. It does not let you track your changes from the two previous versions. We have used CVSWeb in the past and the display was not great but it did have the ability (in a web page) to diff two different versions of text (source code in this case). Does anyone have any experience or know of any web-based diff tools that work nicely with a rich-text editor in the web?

    Hello: we currently do not use asp.net controls (no web forms). The way we do is: 1 Read HTML file from disk 2 lookup database, parse tags and populate data finally, Response.Write(page.ToString()); here there is no possibility of using asp.net controls. What I am wondering is, if we use asp.net controls in those HTML files, is there way to process them during step 2? Thanks and appreciate your response.

    Hi, I'm currently using JavaScript and jQuery. I have an function which executes once the document is ready, and inside that I am creating objects which contain various attributes. Within the same function, I can access these new object's attributes no problem, however once I'm inside a different function I can't seem to reference them properly and therefore cannot access the objects or the information inside them. What's the correct way to reference the attributes of an object which was created in a different function to the one looking for the information?

    Hi there, I have an application in which I would like to support multiple orientations. I have two .xib files that I want to use, myViewController.xib and myViewControllerLandscape.xib. myViewController.xib exists in project/Resources and myViewControllerLandscape.xib exists in the root project directory. What I want to do is use a separate NIB (myViewControllerLandscape.xib) for my rotations. I try detecting rotation in viewDidLoad like this: if((self.interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft) || (self.interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight)) { NSLog(@"Landscape detected!"); [self initWithNibName:@"myViewControllerLandscape" bundle:nil]; } But I can see in gdb that this isn't executed when the app is started with the device in landscape. The NSLog message doesn't fire. Why is this? What have I done wrong? Also, if I explicitly put the initWithNibName function call in the viewDidLoad method, that nib is not loaded, and it continues with the myViewController.xib file. What's wrong with my call? Should I specify a bundle? Thanks!

  • Is there a way to pass a custom type from C# to Oracle using System.Data.OracleClient?

    I was searching online for a solution to passing a string array to a stored procedure in Oracle. The "easy" but messy way was using a comma delimited string. I had found a sample based on which I created my own type of TABLE of VARCHAR2(200). I understood that I could use a constructor created "behind-the-scenes" by Oracle to give a list of values that would, in the PL/SQL, be treated as a TABLE I could iterate through. But when I got to the C# I saw that there is no way for me to create an OracleParameter object that would allow me to use this implicit constructor. All the samples I'm finding online for now are dealing with Oracle Data Adapter, none say anything about System.Data.OracleClient. Is there a way to achieve this?

  • How do I correctly modify a custom cocoa framework?

    Hello, I'm working with the very-useful ID3 framework in my cocoa project. There's one tiny thing I'd like to modify in it, but I can't seem to get the changes I've made to apply to the built framework. The source code provided with the framework comes with an Xcode project, so I've opened that up and for testings sake put an NSLog(@"hello"); in. It's definetly in a place where it will be called and there are other NSLog() calls in the framework that show up so it's not just console output being supressed. To build the framework once modified I've first cleaned the build folder, made sure that it's actually removed the files, and then built it. Then in the Xcode project I'm using the framework in, I've deleted the old reference and added a new one to the framework that's freshly built. Running my project with the newly build framework doesn't call the modified framework code. I've tried with both the Development and Deployment builds that are part of the framework Xcode project. My gut instinct is that the executable that the framework code is compiled into is being cached somehow. But as I'm fairly unfamiliar with the workings of frameworks, I'm not really sure where to look.

  • How do I use a custom authentication mechanism for a Java web application with Spring Security?

    Hi, I'm working on a project to convert an existing Java web application to use Spring Web MVC. As a part of this I will migrate the existing log-on/log-off mechanism to use Spring Security. The idea at this stage is to replicate the existing functionality and replace only the web layer, leaving the service classes and objects in place. The required functionality is simple. Access is controlled to URLs and to access certain pages the user must log on. Authentication is performed with a simple username and password along with an extra static piece of information that comes from the login page. There is no notion of a role: once a user has logged on they have access to all of the pages. Behind the scenes, the service layer has a class with a simple authentication method: doAuthenticate(String username, String password, String info) throws ServiceException An exception is thrown if the login fails. I'd like to leave this existing service object that does the authentication intact but to "plug it into" the Spring Security mechanism. Can somebody suggest the best approach to take for this please? Naturally, I'd like to take the path of least resistance and leave the work where possible to Spring... Thanks in advance, Adam.

  • Custom format document option in visual studio. Formatting CSS tags.

    Hi, When i work in VS2008, i use the Ctrl+K+D very often as it saves a lot of time. But in CSS files, this command formats the document in a way i don't quite like. For example when i auto format the document, .Foo { width:1px; height:2px; } However, i like to format tags this way, as it is much more easy to read (in my opinion): .Foo { width:1px; height:2px; } So, are there any way that i can implement this ? The "Tag specific options" feature seems to be the thing that i need, but i am not quite sure how to do this. Thanks.

    Given the following: $foo = "Yo [user Cobb] I heard you like dreams so I put a dream in yo dream in yo dream so you can dream while you dream while you dream." I'd like to do this: $foo = bar($foo); echo $foo; And get something like this: Yo Cobb I heard you like dreams so I put a dream in yo dream in yo dream so you can dream while you dream while you dream. I'm unsure of how the bar function should work. I think this is doable with regular expressions but I personally find those hard to understand. Using the strpos function is another method but I wonder if there is a better solution. Pseudocode is fine but actual code will be appreciated.
