• "type" Command Not Working As Expected on Git Bash

  The type command, in Linux, returns the location, on the filesystem, of the given file, if it is in the current folder or the $PATH. This functionality is also available through Windows with the Git Bash command line program. The command also returns a file's location given the file without its extension (.exe, .vbs, etc.) However, I have run into what seems like a strange corner case where the file exists on the $PATH but doesn't get returned using the command. I am thinking of buying a new computer soon, so I looked up the method of transferring the license key from one computer to another, in preparation for actually doing this. The method I found mentioned the files slmgr.vbs and slui.exe, both of which reside in the C:/Windows\System32 folder, which is in my $PATH, as usual for a Windows computer. However, these two files aren't showing up when I use the type command. Also, neither gets executed when I call the files as commands without their extensions in Git Bash, and only slmgr.vbs gets executed when I call them with the extensions. Finally, slmgr.vbs is shown when listing the folder's contents in Git Bash, as well, but slui.exe isn't. I thought this might have to do with permissions, and, indeed, both files have very restrictive permissions, as you can see in the pictures below, but they both have the same permissions, which wouldn't explain why one gets executed and the other doesn't when called directly, nor why one file is listed on command line but the other isn't.   Hi, I am using JSF 2 and richfaces 3.3.3 for an application hosted on tomcat 6.0.20. The application crashes as soon as a request is made via the browser (Mozilla and IE). • Hibernate Query Language Problem

  Well, I have implemented a distinct query in hibernate. It returns me result. But, while casting the fields are getting interchanged. So, it generates casting error. What should be the solution? As an example, I do have database, "ProjectAssignment" that has three fields, aid, pid & userName. I want all distinct userName data from this table. I have applied query : select distinct userName, aid, pid from ProjectAssignment Whereas the ProjectAssignment.java file has the fields in sequence aid, pid & userName. Now, here the userName is first field in output. So, Casting is not getting possible. Also, query : select aid, pid, distinct userName from ProjectAssignment is not working. What is the proper query for the same ? Or what else the solution ? • Passing a variable from Excel 2007 Custom Task Pane to Hosted PowerShell

  I am testing PowerShell hosting using C#.   I am getting the below error from VS on an 32-bit XP Professional server even though I set Tools-Options-Database Tools-Data Connections to "SIDEKICK", which is the name of my computer. In other words SIDEKICK should default to the full SQLSERVER. In other words, I want VS to use SQLSERVER instead of SQLSERVER EXPRESS. And I can clearly see my database both from VS in the Server Explorer and also in SSMS 2008. Furthermore, I can view the tables of this database in Server Explorer from VS. I do not get any build errors. And it looks like all of the naming is consistent in my web.config file. I am developing my website according to a Microsoft tutorial, so I should not be getting an error. • Framework 4 Features: Summary of Security enhancements

  In the last log entry I mentioned one of the new security features in Oracle Utilities Application Framework 4.0.1. Security is one of the major "tent poles" (to borrow a phrase from Steve Jobs) in this release of the framework. There are a number of security related enhancements requested by customers and as a result of internal reviews that we have introduced. Here is a summary of some of the security enchancements we have added in this release: Security Cache Changes - Security authorization information is automatically cached on the server for performance reasons (security is checked for every single call the product makes for all modes of access). Prior to this release the cache auto-refreshed every 30 minutes (or so). This has beem made more nimble by supporting a cache refresh every minute (or so). This means authorization changes are reflected quicker than before. Business Level security - Business Services are configurable services that are based upon Application Services. Typically, the business service inherited its security profile from its parent service. Whilst this is sufficient for most needs, it is now required to further specify security on the Business Service definition itself. This will allow granular security and allow the same application service to be exposed as different Business Services with their own security. This is particularly useful when you base a Business Service on a query zone. User Propogation - As with other client server applications, the database connections are pooled and shared as needed. This means that a common database user is used to access the database from the pool to allow sharing. Unfortunently, this means that tracability at the database level is that much harder. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4 the end userid is now propogated to the database using the CLIENT_IDENTIFIER as part of the Oracle JDBC connection API. This not only means that the common database userid is still used but the end user is indentifiable for the duration of the database call. This can be used for monitoring or to hook into Oracle's database security products. This enhancement is only available to Oracle Database customers. Enhanced Security Definitions - Security Administrators use the product browser front end to control access rights of defined users. While this is sufficient for most sites, a new security portal has been introduced to speed up the maintenance of security information. Oracle Identity Manager Integration - With the popularity of Oracle's Identity Management Suite, the Framework now provides an integration adapter and Identity Manager Generic Transport Connector (GTC) to allow users and group membership to be provisioned to any Oracle Utilities Application Framework based product from Oracle's Identity Manager. This is also available for Oracle Utilties Application Framework V2.2 customers. Refer to My Oracle Support KBid 970785.1 - Oracle Identity Manager Integration Overview. Audit On Inquiry - Typically the configurable audit facility in the Oracle Utilities Application Framework is used to audit changes to records. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework the Business Services and Service Scripts could be configured to audit inquiries as well. Now it is possible to attach auditing capabilities to zones on the product (including base package ones). Time Zone Support - In some of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products, the timezone of the end user is a factor in the processing. The user object has been extended to allow the recording of time zone information for use in product functionality. JAAS Suport - Internally the Oracle Utilities Application Framework uses a number of techniques to validate and transmit security information across the architecture. These various methods have been reconciled into using Java Authentication and Authorization Services for standardized security. This is strictly an internal change with no direct on how security operates externally. JMX Based Cache Management - In the last bullet point, I mentioned extra security applied to cache management from the browser. Alternatively a JMX based interface is now provided to allow IT operations to control the cache without the browser interface. This JMX capability can be initiated from a JSR120 compliant JMX console or JMX browser. I will be writing another more detailed blog entry on the JMX enhancements as it is quite a change and an exciting direction for the product line. Data Patch Permissions - The database installer provided with the product required lower levels of security for some operations. At some sites they wanted the ability for non-DBA's to execute the utilities in a controlled fashion. The framework now allows feature configuration to allow delegation for patch execution. User Enable Support - At some sites, the use of temporary staff such as contractors is commonplace. In this scenario, temporary security setups were required and used. A potential issue has arisen when the contractor left the company. Typically the IT group would remove the contractor from the security repository to prevent login using that contractors userid but the userid could NOT be removed from the authorization model becuase of audit requirements (if any user in the product updates financials or key data their userid is recorded for audit purposes). It is now possible to effectively diable the user from the security model to prevent any use of the useridwhilst retaining audit information. These are a subset of the security changes in Oracle Utilities Application Framework. I, of course, shared a bit about Dan North, the father of BDD and touched upon some crazy hypothesis dreamed up by Sapir and Whorf. I then gave a Behavior Driven Development overview (my impressions of the implementation and lifecycle) and then touched upon available tools, how to get started and I threw in a number of reference and reading materials which you will find below. Downloading and installing Event Store and Tools Download Event Store http://download.geteventstore.com – I unzipped these files into C:\EventStore\v2.0.1 Download Curl from http://curl.haxx.se/download.html – I downloaded Win64 Generic (with SSL) and unzipped these files into C:\curl version 7.31.0 Running the tools I used in my presentation Demonstration 1 (running Event Store) You can use one of my Event Store runner command files to run the single node version of Event Store, using default ports of 2213 for HTTP and 1113  for TCP, and with a wildcard HTTP pattern.  Both take a single command line parameter to specify the location of the data and log files.  The runners assume the single node executable is located in C:\EventStore\v2.0.1, and will placed data files and logs beneath C:\EventStore\Data, i.e. RunEventStore.cmd TestData1 This will create data files in C:\EventStore\Data\TestData1\Data and log files in C:\EventStore\Data\TestData1\logs. If, when running Event Store you may see the following message, [03288,15,06:23:00.622] Failed to start http server Access is denied You will either need to run Event Store in an administrator console window, or you can use the netsh command to create a firewall permission to allow HTTP listening (this will need to be run, once, in an administrator console window), netsh http add urlacl url=http://*:2213/ user=liam You can always delete this later by running the delete; netsh http delete urlacl url=http://*:2213/ If you want to confirm that everything is running OK, open the management console in a browser by navigating to http://127.0.0.1:2213. If at any point you are asked for a user name and password use the default of ‘admin’/‘changeit’. Demonstration 2 (reading and adding data, curl) In my second demonstration I used curl directly from the console to read streams, write events and then read back those events. On GitHub I have included is a set of curl commands, CurlCommandLine.txt, and a sample data file, SampleData.json, to load an event into a DDDNorth3 stream. As there is not much data in the Event Store at this point I used the $stats-127.0.0.1:2113 which is a stream containing performance statistics for Event Store and is updated every 30 seconds (default). Demonstration 3 (projections) On GitHub I have included a sample projection, Projection-ByRoom.txt, which will create streams based on the room on which a session was held on the DDDNorth3 agenda. Browse to the management console, http://127.0.0.1:2213.  Click on Projections, New Projection, give it a name, Sessions-ByRoom, and copy in the JavaScript in the Projection-ByRoom.txt file.  Select Continuous, tick Emit Enabled and then click on Post. It should run immediately. You may by challenged for the administration login for the management console, if so use the default user name and password; 'admin'/'changeit'. The concept requires no replenishment in order to maintain assortment freshness and to create a sense of urgency for the consumer to purchase now. However, maintaining assortment freshness results in high product turnover, making markdown optimization a necessity. Wet Seal, for instance, needed to move from ad-hoc markdowns and dealing with surplus inventory to handling markdowns methodically across 8,000 SKUs with only 12-15 week lifecycle (from DC receipt to exit). By optimizing and automating markdowns, Wet Seal is reaching their goal of assortment freshness, which in turn increases sales. Downloading and installing Event Store and Tools Download Event Store http://download.geteventstore.com – I unzipped these files into C:\EventStore\v2.0.1 Download Curl from http://curl.haxx.se/download.html – I downloaded Win64 Generic (with SSL) and unzipped these files into C:\curl version 7.31.0 Running the tools I used in my presentation Demonstration 1 (running Event Store) You can use one of my Event Store runner command files to run the single node version of Event Store, using default ports of 2213 for HTTP and 1113  for TCP, and with a wildcard HTTP pattern.  Both take a single command line parameter to specify the location of the data and log files.  The runners assume the single node executable is located in C:\EventStore\v2.0.1, and will placed data files and logs beneath C:\EventStore\Data, i.e. RunEventStore.cmd TestData1 This will create data files in C:\EventStore\Data\TestData1\Data and log files in C:\EventStore\Data\TestData1\logs. If, when running Event Store you may see the following message, [03288,15,06:23:00.622] Failed to start http server Access is denied You will either need to run Event Store in an administrator console window, or you can use the netsh command to create a firewall permission to allow HTTP listening (this will need to be run, once, in an administrator console window), netsh http add urlacl url=http://*:2213/ user=liam You can always delete this later by running the delete; netsh http delete urlacl url=http://*:2213/ If you want to confirm that everything is running OK, open the management console in a browser by navigating to http://127.0.0.1:2213. If at any point you are asked for a user name and password use the default of ‘admin’/‘changeit’.   Demonstration 2 (reading and adding data, curl) In my second demonstration I used curl directly from the console to read streams, write events and then read back those events. On GitHub I have included is a set of curl commands, CurlCommandLine.txt, and a sample data file, SampleData.json, to load an event into a DDDNorth3 stream. As there is not much data in the Event Store at this point I used the $stats-127.0.0.1:2113 which is a stream containing performance statistics for Event Store and is updated every 30 seconds (default). Demonstration 3 (projections) On GitHub I have included a sample projection, Projection-ByRoom.txt, which will create streams based on the room on which a session was held on the DDDNorth3 agenda. Browse to the management console, http://127.0.0.1:2213.  Click on Projections, New Projection, give it a name, Sessions-ByRoom, and copy in the JavaScript in the Projection-ByRoom.txt file.  Select Continuous, tick Emit Enabled and then click on Post. It should run immediately. • How to create a new Team Project Collection in TFS2010:

  TFS 2010 has introduced the notion of Team Project Collection (TPC).  I have already discussed about TPC in my earlier post, you can check it out here. In this post, I will demonstrate how to create a new Team Project Collection in TFS2010. First, you have to open the TFS Administration Console (Start à All Programs à Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010 à Team Foundation Server Administration Console), expand the Application Tier node in TFS Administration Console and click on Team Project Collection. Here you will see the TPC’s which are already exist, I am having only one TPC named New Collection and I’m going to create a new TPC called Demo Collection. To create a new Team Project Collection, you need to click on Create Collection; it will open the Create New Team Project Collection window.     Under the Name tab, you have to enter the name of Collection which you want to give for your new TPC (I naming it as Demo Collection). You can also provide some description about your TPC in Description tab which is optional and click next. Here, you need to enter the name of SQL Server Instance where you want your new TPC data to reside. You have the option either to choose the creating a Database for this TPC or use the already existing empty database and then click next.   In next screen, you have to choose SharePoint configuration. Here you have the options to either configure SharePoint Site for TPC at default collections or you can specify the your existing SharePoint site and  you can also choose not  to configure the SharePoint for this collection, if you choose last option then you cannot configure the Share Point sites for the all the Team Projects under this Project Collection. You also have the flexibility to create a Share Point site for this TPC later on, then if you need you have to configure SharePoint site for the existing team projects manually.   In next screen, you will have the Reports configuration. Here you have the options to either configure the Reports for TPC at default path or you can specify the path for at existing Reports folder, you can also choose not to configure the Reports for this collection, if you choose last option then you cannot create  the Reports  for the all the Team Projects under this Project Collection. Here also you can enable reporting for this TPC later on. The next screen is related to Lab Management Configuration, Lab Management is the new feature in TFS2010 which enables the users to create and manage virtual test environments where you can deploy and test your application. There are no options available here as I don’t have the Lab Management configured for my Team Foundation Server. The next screen is Review Configuration window, which will show up all the configuration settings you have specified, so that you can review the configurations before creating the Team Project Collection. If you want to make any changes to the configurations then you can go back to the previous windows and can make the changes. After Reviewing the configuration settings, you can click on verify button. Which will verify that if you’re Team Project Collection is ready to be created or not, it will show up the errors and warning (if any) which can make your Team Project Collection fail. You can then choose to create the Team Project Collection if the verify option doesn’t throw any warnings and errors. If the verify option throws any errors, then it is strongly suggested that you have to first rectify the issues then only go for TPC creation especially in case of warnings as it is a common practice to overlook the warnings.   If you choose the create TPC option, then it will start the process of creating a Team Project Collection  and once its completed you can check the status of configuration different components  during Team Project Collection. You can see in below screen that all the components are configured successfully.   In next screen, you can find the location of log file created for this Team Project Creation, this log file is really important in case of Team Project creation failure because it will help you to find  the root cause for the failure. Now, you can see that the New Team Projection (Demo Collection) which was created is now available in Team Foundation Collection tab and its status is Online.   You can now try to connect to this Team Project Collection from Team Explorer. Choose the newly created Team Project Collection and click on connect.     This Team Project Collection is empty because no Team Projects are created yet. Now, you can create the new Team Projects and start working.

  Right off the bat, Oracle's Senior Vice President, Server Technologies Development made his purpose very clear: demonstrate how the elements of the Oracle product stack are evolving (and integrating) together. There are some great details about the new functionality of each Oracle application line and how the different products sync and interact. The lifecycle charts in Kurian's presentation illustrate how data can flow from an Oracle Demantra into Oracle E-Business Suite and back out to an Oracle Agile system to support value chain planning. With so many products at play in the enterprise, Kurian shows that if you trust that your systems can work together, IT strategy becoming much more about managing business process than managing software product.

• Configuring Expert Search in Communicator 14 and SharePoint 2010

  Communicator 14 provides functionality to be able to search for contacts not just by name, but by skill.  For example a customer service agent at an airline can search for other agents with Travel Advisory experience by typing the search criteria into the Communicator search box and performing a search by keyword.  The search results will return users who have specified that skill in their profile on their SharePoint My Site.  This is actually pretty easy to configure, Ill show you how. Create Search and People Search Results Pages in SharePoint Communicator 14 Expert Search works by using the SharePoint 2010 Search Service to search SharePoint for user profiles with matching keywords.  This requires that you have an Enterprise Search site in your site collection which includes the search service and also the People Results pages.  The easiest way to do this is to create a Search Center site in your site collection. Note: I get an error when trying to create an Enterprise Search site in a Team Site in the SharePoint 2010 RTM bits, so I created it as a site collection that is evident in the URLs you see below. In the screenshots below, you can see that the URL of the SharePoint search service in the Search site collection is http://sps2010/sites/search/_vti_bin/search.asmx, and the URL of the People Search Results page is http://sps2010/sites/Search/Pages/peopleresults.aspx. Point Communications Server 14 to Search and People Search Results Pages For Communicator 14 to be able to perform an Expert Search, you need to configure Communications Server 14 to point to the Search Service and People Search Results page URLs. From a server with the OCS Core bits installed, fire up the Communications Server Management Shell and type Get-CsClientPolicy. Scroll down to the bottom of the output, were interested in setting the values of: SPSearchInternalURL SPSearchExternalURL SPSearchCenterInternalURL SPSearchCenterExternalURL SPSearchInternalURL and SPSearchExternalURL correspond to the internal and external URLs of the SharePoint search service in the Search site collection, while SPSearchCenterInternalURL and SPSearchCenterExternalURL correspond to the internal and external URLs of the people search results pages. Well use the Communications Server Management Shell to set the values of these CS policy properties. For simplicity, Im only going to set the internal URLs here. Set-CsClientPolicy SPSearchInternalURL http://sps2010/sites/search/_vti_bin/search.asmx     -SPSearchCenterInternalURL http://sps2010/sites/Search/Pages/peopleresults.aspx Log out and back into Communicator.  You can verify that these settings were applied by running the Get-CsClientPolicy cmdlet again from the Communications Server Management Shell. However, theres another super-secret ninja trick to verify that the settings were applied: Find the Communicator icon in the Windows System Tray Hold down the Ctrl button Click (left) the Communicator icon in the Windows System Tray do not depress the Ctrl button You should now see an extra menu item called Configuration Information, click it. Scroll down and locate the Expert Search URL and SharePoint Search Center URL keys and verify that their values correspond to those you set using the Set-CsClientPolicy PowerShell cmdlet. Configure a Sharepoint User Profile Import Im not going to provide detailed steps here except to say that you need to configure the SharePoint 2010 User Profile  Service Application to import user account details from Active Directory on a scheduled basis. This is a critical step because there are several user profile properties e.g. SipAddress that are only populated by a user profile import.  When performing an Expert Search, Communicator can only render results for users who have a SipAddress specified. Add Skills to User Profiles Navigate to your My Site and click on My Profile.  This page allows you to set many contact details that are searchable in SharePoint.  Were particularly interested in the Ask Me About property of a users profile.  Expert Search searches against this property to find users with matching skills. Configure a SharePoint Search Crawl Ensure that you have a scheduled job to crawl your Local SharePoint Sites content source.  Depending on how you have this configured, it will also crawl the My Site site collection and add user properties such as Ask Me About to the search index. Thats It! SharePoint 2010 provides new social and collaboration features to help users find other users with similar skills or interests. Expert Search extends this functionality directly into Microsoft Communicator 14, allowing you to interact with the users directly from the search results. • Ubuntu 11 and 12 initially fast but later bogs down, CPU pegged

  I started with Ubuntu 11 a few weeks ago. It's on a DELL M4300 with a OCZ SSD. Default setup, except that I've installed the proprietary NVIDIA graphics and BROADCOM wireless drivers. Dual boot with Windows. If I cold boot into Ubuntu, it is very fast, just like the Windows experience that I'm used to. But SOMETHING happens, and I haven't yet determined what, but the system gets incredibly slow and stays that way. At first I thought it had to do with Adobe Flash because it seemed to be triggered by sites with Flash. But then I removed Flash and the problem remains. I thought it was just an overheating problem, but I've now upgraded to 12.04 which supposedly fixes the overheating problems I've read about. Perhaps the heat situation was brought on by Flash in my early cases? So I installed Jupiter for CPU management, but the thermometer reports a familiar Windows-side temperature of 53 degrees Celsius. Switching Jupiter to lower performance doesn't help. When I check the System Monitor application, sorting by CPU usage, there are no obvious problem processes. However, in the graphs tab, both CPU cores are pegged at 100%! I notice that the slowness seems to be similar to the extremely bad performance I got prior to installing the NVIDIA drivers. I'm not sure if that helps. This is the strangest part to me - although the temperature seems OK, even after rebooting, the system remains slow - starting with GRUB2 which is very noticeably delayed, all the way through to either Ubuntu or Windows! That's right, even the Windows side suffers effects and takes several minutes to complete booting whereas normally (with my SSD) it's ready to use in 15 seconds. The only way to fix it is to shutdown and let the parts cool down. Or maybe it just needs to completely power off and boot rather than a soft reboot, temperature has nothing to do with it? - is that possible? But know that I have never had this problem in Windows, even if Windows gets very hot (135 F) a reboot would be enough time for it to recover. For this reason, I don't think it's a heat thing, but I can't imagine what else could be surviving the reboot. I'm entirely updated - there are no pending updates. I have the Post-Release updates of NVIDIA too, btw. If this sounds CLOSE to something you know about, but one of the details doesn't line up exactly, it might be a mistake in my perception. Are there tests you can suggest to rule something out? I don't know the relationship of which scenarios GRUB2 is also slow, but WHEN it is slow, it is slow both before the menu appears and after the selection is made - although for the diagnosis of GRUB2 it is harder for me to tell what the normal speeds should be. With SSD, I would expect that GRUB2 could load instantly, and that the GRUB2 purple would disappear instantly after the selection. The only delay to be expected is the change in graphics modes (though I couldn't guess why that ever requires any noticeable time)

• Data Mining Resources

  There are many different types of analyses, each one with its own pros and cons. Relational reports have a predefined structure, and end users cannot change it. They are simple to use for end users. Reports can use real-time data and snapshots of data to show the state of a report at specific points in time. One of the drawbacks is that report authoring is limited to IT pros and advanced users. Any kind of dynamic restructuring is very limited. If real-time data is used for a report, the report has a negative impact on the performance of the source system. Processing of the reports might be slow because the data comes from relational database management systems, which are not optimized for reporting only. If you create a semantic model of your data, your end users can create ad-hoc report structures. However, the development is more complex because a developer is needed to create these semantic models. For OLAP, you typically use specialized database management systems. You get lightning speed of analyses. End users can use rich and thin clients to interactively change the structure of the report. Typically, they do it graphically. However, the development of an OLAP system is many times quite complex. It involves the preparation and maintenance of an enterprise data warehouse and OLAP cubes. In order to exploit the possibility of real-time restructuring of reports, the users must be both active and educated. The data is usually stale, as it is loaded into data warehouses and OLAP cubes with a scheduled process. With data mining, a structure is not selected in advance; it searches for the structure. As a result, data mining can give you the most valuable results because you can discover patterns you did not expect. A data mining model structure is limited only by the attributes that you use to train the model. One of the drawbacks is that a lot of knowledge is needed for a successful data mining project. End users have to understand the results. Subject matter experts and IT professionals need to understand business problem thoroughly. The development might be sometimes even more complex than the development of OLAP cubes. Each type of analysis has its own place in an enterprise system. SQL Server has tools for all kinds of analyses. However, data mining is the most advanced way of analyzing the data; this is the “I” in BI. In order to get the most out of it, you need to learn quite a lot. In this blog post, I am gathering together resources for learning, including forthcoming events.   Time for some book news update. CLR via C#, 3rd Edition seems to have been out for a little while now. The book was released in early Feb this year, and needless to say my copy is on it’s way. I can barely wait to dig in and chew on the goodies that one of the best technical authors and software professionals I respect has in store. This chapter covers all the new .NET 4.0 constructs including cooperative cancelation, Tasks, the aralle class, parallel language integrated query, timers, how the thread pool manages its threads, cache lines and false sharing. Chapter 27-Performing I/O-Bound Asynchronous Operations Whole new chapter explaining how Windows performs synchronous and asynchronous I/O operations.
