  • Free web gallery installation that can use existing directory hierarchy in filesystem?

    There are several different free software gallery projects (Gallery, Coppermine, etc), but as far as I know each of those creates a copy of imported images in their internal storage, be it directory structure or database). Is there any gallery software that would allow keeping existing directory hierarchy of media files (images, videos), as-is, and just store the meta-data of them in a database? I guess at least various NAS solutions ship with software like this.

    Does Windows 8 support upgrading from a clean install. For example, buying the upgrade key and entering it on a clear install? Or is it functionally necissary to have the version you are upgrading from installed on the computer. The former was the case with Windows 7, but I recal Windows 2000 needed the an installed copy before an update would proceed. I currently have a linux setup and I have the liceanse for Windows 7, but I don't want to have to downoad two 4 GB isos.

    Using Excel 2010, I want a single formula to apply to all cells in a column. I see documentation for a feature called "Calculated Columns". That is exactly what I want, but when I follow the instructions I only end up creating a formulate in a single cell - not the whole column. I don't want to use "Fill" or "Copy" because the number or rows in the sheet changes periodically and maintaining the formulas would be very tedious.

    I wonder how to check if two DVDs are exactly the same? I have two DVDs and if I open the DVDs and copy the content to the HDD and compare the respective files on the HDD it shows no difference. As I know DVD does also have some additional content (this content includes information saying if the DVD is bootable and some formating information I guess). How can I check also this additional content? Is it somehow possible without additional programs using Windows or Ubuntu?

    Recently I have bought a second hand HP Notebook from a friend. The PC still has the recovery partition not backed up yet. However, I'm thinking of resetting Windows using the new Windows 8 resetting feature. Windows warned me that all files will be deleted. Is it okay to reset Windows then backup the recovery partition in order to have a fresh backup or this can lead to losing the recovery partition and, with it, my genuine copy of Windows 8?

    Since Firefox 7 (or 6?) they silently removed "http" from the address bar. Previously, when you clicked it, "http" showed up again, allowing to easily just change http into https. So far, I found two ways to get it back, but isn't there a setting I can use to have it permanently in vision again, or at least when I click it? I have an exact copy of the hardware of it, which I intend to use a a redundant backup in case my server fails (hardware or software).     I have an IIS server running a site, appPool is running under local system, this is done because its easier to have full permissions to certificates and other file based resources on the local server. Problem is when I try write or copy a file to a network share, permissions are obviously not in place on the remote system for the IIS server local system. Is it possible to grant permissions on the remote system to include read/write or even full access to the IIS servers local system account?

I've found this Release Notes page and a (short) summery table at the top of the language tutorial but neither have dates, so I don't know where to start (and the more detailed notes make for rather dry reading).
