• Can't use sudo on ubuntu

  After update and reboot I get 'user is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.' when trying to call sudo. The problem is that I don't have a GRUB with revovery option. I try to boot from live cd but I'm not able to access the system partition, only the partition with grub. Can I somehow enable the recovery mode in GRUB? Or boot throw the live CD from first hard drive with some option for that?

• CURL on PHP 5.2 works in CLI but not in IIS

  I have a Windows 2003 Server running IIS with php 5.2.8, I'm trying to use CURL, and it works in CLI mode (if i execute php.exe) but it does not seem to be registered when running under IIS. The output of PHP info in both CLI and IIS show the same 'Loaded Configuration File', but under IIS it does not give the CURL info box. c:\program files\php\php.exe -i shows ... Loaded Configuration File => C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini ... curl cURL support => enabled cURL Information => libcurl/7.16.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 phpinfo() ... Loaded Configuration File => C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini ... NOTE: This server also runs php 5.3 in c:\program files\php-5.3.0 and CURL does properly work with that installation.

• Re-assembling the RAID-5 array reboots my CentOS-5 machine

  I have 3 HDD's, each divided into 3 partitions. I had created a RAID-1 for boot partition md0 created from sda0, sdb0 and had also created two RAID-5 arrays: md1 created from sda1, sdb1, sdc1 md2 created from sda2, sdb2, sdc2 It used to work fine but one day I had to power off the machine (cold reboot) to get any response from the machine. After that, when the system started booting, it tried for a while to reconstruct the RAID arrays but after a few minutes it crashed silently. I booted the system in linux rescue mode from the DVD and tried to re-assemble the RAID devices manually. I was able to re-assemble md0 and md1 using: mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md0 mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md1 But when I try to re-assemble md2 using: mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md2 the system reboots silently again. How can I fix this problem?

I'm aware that this may not be a best practice or not a recommended setup, however, the setup is to be configured as below: Two web servers running IIS 7.5 (needs a common storage for web content) for HA and another set of two servers for sql cluster in active-passive mode for HA. Also is it possible to enable ARR on 2 node active-active IIS cluster for load balancing http requests? Appreciate if someone replies with both pros & cons of the setup.

• idle proccesses and high memory bad? uwsgi/django

  I have a VPS with 256MB of ram. I'm running nginx, uwsgi and postgresql on Ubuntu 12.04 for a soon to be Django site. About 200MB of ram are being used despite the website not being active, the uwsgi processes seem to just be idling. Is this bad? I once heard that having a bunch of free memory isn't necessarily a good metric because it is possible that the memory in use can easily be freed up. I mean, it is possible that the server is storing commonly used "stuff" in case it is accessed but is more than happy to dump it if the ram is needed. But I'm really not sure, hence me asking this question. If it is bad I could set some of the application loading options for uwsgi like "cheap" or "idle" mode. Screenshot of my htop

  I want my computer to start uTorrent at 4 o'clock in the morning, when I'm asleep. But the computer is a bit noisy so I put it to sleep mode every time I go to bed. I've tried creating a task in Task Scheduler with this parameters: Run whether user is logged in or not Daily At 4:00 every day Start a program "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe" Wake the computer to run this task I've tried to change the time to run to make sure the computer wakes up and runs uTorrent. But it doesn't. What am I doing wrong? Maybe I've lost something?

• Need help diagnosing cause of BSOD

  I've got a Windows 7 PC here that was getting very frequent BSODs. The error codes were variant (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY), and it was impossible to use the computer for longer than an hour without getting one. I backed it all up and reinstalled Windows completely, thinking that it was a corrupt driver issue. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the BSODs with the same error messages on this fresh installation. This tells me that it must be some faulty piece of hardware, but I'm not sure what it would be. I ran Memtest+ on the machine, but did not get any errors after 2 passes. I also ran a few built-in recovery mode scans from the HP recovery partition. I need some ideas on how to test the rest of the hardware to solve this issue.

• Internal LTO tape drive becomes hot

  We use an internal LTO3 tape drive (HP Ultrium 920) in a PC (no particular server hardware) running Linux. The tape drive becomes quite hot - I don't have the exact temperature, but you may touch it for a second or two, then it hurts ;-) This happens when the tape has nothing to do (during reading/writing, it might become even hotter, I haven't checked that). Besides that, the system is working fine. Now I'm wondering Why does the tape becomes so hot? Is this something I need to care about? Is there something like a 'standby' mode for the tape? (I think it should not consume that much energy when it is not used)

• dhclient configures /etc/resolv.conf with invalid entry

  I'm trying to figure out why running dhclient on my interface sets /etc/resolv conf to the ip number of my gateway(router). This entry is invalid and each and every time causes inability to resolve any address. I would like to: stop dhclient from overwriting the /etc/resolv.conf or make dhclient write there the valid dns ip from my router More on the environment: I'm using virtual Debian Wheezy as a client system on Windows Seven x64. It is run by Virtualbox with networking mode set to bridged (all packets from debian are injected to my network interface on windows). If I manually configure the /etc/resolv.conf then everything works fine. Doing this on every boot is quite annoying.. PS I know I can write a script to do it for me, but this is not the solution I want. //edit router ip: 192.168.1.100 /etc/resolv.conf AFTER running dhclient eth0: "nameserver 192.168.1.100" what I would like the /etc/resolv.conf to look like: "nameserver 89.202.xxxx" (I don't have to provide the real ip do I? )

  Does anyone know why a VPN connection might interfere with Apple's Bonjour? I've noticed that my Mac and various iDevices have trouble finding each other on my local network, when I have VPN connections open. Things like Home Sharing and Wi-Fi Sync work some of the time, but sometimes fail to find the other device. The VPN connections are made using IPSecuritas, which is a GUI around raccoon. I have the local "endpoint mode" set to Host. Apple mentions that Home Sharing may conflict with VPNs, but they don't specify why, or how to fix it. I'm using a Mac with OS 10.7.3 and IPSecuritas to connect to the VPN, an iPhone, and an iPad.

• DokuWiki Segmentation Fault On Radius Auth

  I'm running x64 Ubuntu 12.04. I did a simple apt-get install dokuwiki to install DokuWiki. And I'm trying to follow the directions located here: http://www.dokuwiki.org/auth:radius to get Radius authentication working. Things seemed to install OK. Under Configuration Manager I selected Authentication backend to be "Radius" and filled in the Radius details at the bottom. Now, however, whenever I try to log into the Wiki, my browser gives me the following error: No data received I checked /var/log/apache2/error.log and see this: [Tue Jul 10 22:22:14 2012] [notice] child pid 5270 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I'm fairly sure the Radius server is setup correctly as it correctly authenticates with my squid proxy and other stuff on the network. But this is about the extent of my Linux troubleshooting skills. Can anyone suggest steps for me to follow to help track down what's causing apache2 to segfault short of attaching with gdb and issuing a set follow-fork-mode?   Hi, I have a fit-PC server with Debian GNU/Linux (Lenny). I would like to use it as a wifi access point since my Linksys WRT54GS has become unstable. I have a USB Ralink wifi NIC. When I insert the card to USB I can see this with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter I have tried following various HOWTOs on using wifi card as AP in Linux, however, it seems that the card cannot go into monitor mode. I believe this is because I must use a newer driver or upload non-free firmware or something like that. I have tried installed wicd, but it does not help. I bought this wifi adapter because I was told that it is one of the most common used Linux supported wifi cards that can be used as access point and a lot of other stuff. So my question is: How do I set up this USB wifi card as wireless access point in Debian Lenny?

  I am trying to improve performance on my server. I have a few processes that need low jitter (less than 10ms variance). I have a load average of 4 maximum on an i7-920 (4 physical cores, 8 with HT). There are about 10 processes ranging from 40% to 90% of a core user mode. System usage is 3% total. Total CPU usage is 80% max. Will setting the kernel from 100hz to 1000hz improve the jitter if tickless and high resolution timers are already set? This page seems to indicate it still does something. https://lkml.org/lkml/2009/4/28/401 How about changing from voluntary (PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY) to preemptible (PREEMPT)?

• SolidWorks ratio issue with printing in landscape

  We run SolidWorks 2010 on XP. On one workstation when printing to the plotter in a 1:1 ratio in landscape mode it's off by small increments. He needs to adjust manually from 1:1 to 1:1.009 (for example) in order to correctly print 1:1. The increments by which it's off varies from drawing to drawing. None of the other workstations have this issue. All five of the workstations have the same settings and all print to one networked plotter. Three out of five have the same graphics card. Scale to fit is not checked. I read this site often, but this is the first time I've posted. I'm hoping someone here has run across this before. Thanks.

• Input not supported message when monitor is powered off then back on

  I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time). Any ideas what might cause this, only when the monitor is turned off manually?   Hi, I'm using an app called django-chronograph. It has a code of line which works in my dev environment and does not work in production: p = subprocess.Popen(['python', get_manage_py(), 'run_job', str(self.pk)]) This line crashes in production with: unknown command run_job Whereas when I run directly from command line: manage.py run_job It works fine. Interestingly it worked once when we exchanged 'python' with 'usr/bin/python'. then we restarted the server once more and it was back to old behaviour. Thus it seems as we have a python path issue. I'm not the guy who is running the server, its my app that should run and it would be great to get some help here.   The mouse pointer in my Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS VM (running in VMware Fusion) has changed into a little hand holding a document. It doesn't show up in screen-shots. All mouse clicks (left or right) are ignored. But I can still type in the one Terminal window I have open. (And commands work fine.) I wonder if I'm in some kind of drag-and-drop mode. How do I get out of this? Update: Rebooting (from the command-line) worked. Ubuntu came up with the regular mouse-pointer.

• Windows XP Pro SP3 stop error code 0x000000F4

  I have a system running Windows XP Pro SP3. My wife is the primary user of this system, and the last several days in a row, when she tries to log in to the system it gives her a BSOD with the stop error code 0x000000F4. The rest of the error codes change every time she tries to log on, but that one seems to stay constant. The error it gives me is: A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. The machine will also get stuck in a boot loop, where it keeps giving me the screen saying that windows did not start successfully, and to choose how to start windows. I have tried Safe Mode, Last known Good Config, and Normally, and all have resulted in either a return to the boot loop, or BSOD. What might this mean? How can I fix it, without doing a clean install?

• samba shares dissapear everynight

  I have ubuntu 8.04lts and recently a weird problem has been cropping up. every night something happens and in the morning my coworkers cant see the shares. If i try to remote into the machine via ssh i don't get a prompt . when i rebooted the machine i would get a "video cannot be displayed in this mode" screen and no other activity on the box. I booted from grub into recovery and tried doing a package repair (keeping my smb.conf) and that didn't seem to do anything after a few other reboots I was able to get it to come up (im not sure what i did) yesterday it did teh same thing i booted to recovery then did a repair xserver and it came right up so i thought that resovled the issue but then today same thing anyone have any idea on what i can look for (im very new to linux in general) worst case sennerio can i just reinstall ubuntu over again with out blowing out the data?

• rc.local is not executed on bootup ubuntu

  Im on Ubuntu 10.04. I want to execute script on system boot. I added it to rc.local. If I execute rc.local manually it works fine. If I boot system in recovery mode(2nd string in boot menu) it also works fine. But if I boot normally it is not executed. However i added sleep 20 to my script and there is a pause at the end of boot process, but nothing more is executed. • How to protect an OS X Server from an anautorized physical connection?

  Hi I have an OS X 10.6 server, which I administer via SSH and VNC (via SSH tunnel). I can't leave it at the login window since then VNC connections are refused. Therefore I currently leave it logged with my user account. Since it doesn't have a monitor attached, it doesn't go into screen saver mode, which means it doesn't require a password to retake control. This means it is very easy for anyone connecting a keyboard/mouse and monitor to take control of the system. The screen saver password protection, which I can't get to activate, unlike the system's login window, is perfectly compatible with VNC connections. How could I prevent such direct access to the server without connecting a monitor and without blocking my ability to connect with VNC? Thanks!

I have to make it "not always on top" and then "always on top" again and it will show up on top again. another thing that might or might not be a bug is: even when viewing video in full screen mode, the gadgets are all there. • Vista won't boot - just get black screen

  When I boot into Windows Vista (Ultimate), I just get a black screen (with the mouse visible and working). If I run in safe mode, it seems to pause for a while when loading crcdisk.sys. A lot of research says it could be a problem with the hard drive, but I dual boot Ubuntu and that works fine and I can still see and use the Windows partition absolutely fine from Ubuntu. I tried using the "startup repair" option on the Vista install disk but it didn't detect any problems. I have run chkdsk several times, with this: chkdsk C: /f /r And also drive D (the recycle bin). The first two times it detected and fixed errors on the C drive but now it doesn't detect any errors. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?
