• Looking software for making an animated cartoon to present a new application/scenario idea

My company is a rather big so I am looking for an interesting way to get people know my idea to get feedback/get a green light to further develop it. Therefore I am looking for an application (free or commercial) that I could use to realize such an animated cartoon.   I have written a small front-end to the Festival TTS system using Python/Django. I wish to deploy it on the Google App Engine cloud. A few questions: My application uses the Festival app 'text2wave'. Will is work on the cloud? I have used Python primitives like subprocess.call() to invoke the aforementioned program. Will that work? If your answer to any or both of (1) and (2) is no, is there a free api on the web that I can use (from the appengine)? I read somewhere about placing calls from Phono to a Voxeo backend, but I'm not sure what that means. I am aware of the Google Translate extension that allows translation using an HTTP GET (REST) request, but here the text is limited to 100 chars. Bad. Plus, they may take it down any point of time.

• Magento Bulk Product Import + Modules Nightmare

  Have 5,000 products in CSV file File has been re-saved as UT8 file in google documents and exported to CSV from excel File loads perfectly with all fields in demo of magento store manager (except we dont want to buy it:) When trying to upload in regular Magento..keep getting error messages on column duplicates....yes we have hundreds of duplicates as the titles of products in fields correspond with different sizes, etc...no way around it Any solutions around this or any open source software similar to store manager that can do the trick. Ready to give up and go to paid solution such as Big Commerce Also, Uploaded a bunch of free modules/keys...of open source bulk import products from magentocommerce but I cant find them anywhere in the main admin panel to use...there is no menu item for them anywhere??

• Convert Docx or Odt to Pdf

  Hi there, I need to find a way to convert docx or odt files to pdf on a linux web server. Therefore I'm not willing to install openoffice.org for obvious reasons. I've tried Google but it failed for me, so I'm here :-) I can't imagine there's no other solution to this problem than to install a huge chunk of binaries given that a) there are (or at least should be) lot's of packages which can read docx or at least odt and b) there are as many packages which can write pdf files What am I missing here? scratching head Regards, luxifer ps edit: I don't want to use a web service - neither free or paid edit 2: at this point it would also help to convert the docx back to doc so I could use wvpdf to generate the pdf... edit 3: of course it would also help if i could do search and replace on a doc file in the first place; or xps for that matter

  I have a sales call today in which the person that I am talking to is interested in what TFS would give them over Star Team, The first thing I believe that I can say is that TFS is cheaper! Especially if you are doing MSFT development already and your team members have MSDN subscriptions as the CALs for TFS are covered in the MSDN subscription. The other thing that I noticed about Star Team was all of the references to ‘readiness’ and ‘integration’. While that is great, that means that other tools will be needed to provide the features that are already bundled with TFS like, SharePoint integration, as well as Analysis Services and Reporting Services to provide visibility on the web with reports on project health, and team velocity. • Rationale behind freeware projects

  I've seen some freeware projects in the past where the author(s) invested a significant amount of their personal time and resources and never even considered charging for the software. A lot of these projects were donation based, and from what I've heard, donationware can never be a viable business model (even to simply support development costs) because most people choose not to donate if given an option. A lot of these projects eventually shut down because their authors could not sustain them further. Granted, some people simply like making the community happy (or something), but if you're struggling to keep your project alive, why not charge some small amount such as $10 simply to stay operational? If people find your software useful (and a lot of people found those projects VERY useful) they won't have a problem paying such a small amount. The question is: if you have a popular app that people like and download in great numbers, why not put a price tag on it? Why do it for free?

• What are some easy techniques to scan books for new information?

  I find it irresistible to keep purchasing cheap programming and technical e-books in fields such as Drupal, PHP, etc., and also compulsively download free material made available such as those from Microsoft's developer blog... The main problem with the large library I've developed is that there are many chapters (especially the first few) in these books packed with information I already know, but with helpful tidbits hidden in between. The logical step would be to skip those chapters and read the ones I don't seem to know anything about, but I'm afraid I may lose out on really important information this way. But naturally it is tedious to have to read about variables, functions and objects all over again when you are trying to know more about the Registry pattern, for example. It's hard to research on the net for this, because my question itself seems vague and difficult to formulate into a single search query. I need people-advice - what do you do in this situation?

Read the EPUB data in JavaScript. Render it on page. Provide some extra functionality, like text highlights or page notes. I have no information about how I could do this.
