• Pull Request Conversations, Inline Diff Enhancements

Pull Request Conversations Previously, the only way for project members and users who submitted pull requests to converse was via e-mail. This complicated the review process and made conversations isolated and difficult to track. For this release, we’ve added functionality that enables you to have those same conversations within the pull request page. When you view a pull request, you’ll now see “Comments” and “Changes” tabs, with current comments displayed. Inline Diff Enhancements We tweaked the inline diff experience to make it easier to traverse diff blocks. When you open up the inline diff experience, you’ll now see up and down arrows. To move between the diff blocks, you can use those arrows or utilize the available keyboard shortcuts. Lastly, we have also brought the inline diff experience to the source control changes page for project and fork changesets. You can see both enhancements live by viewing the associated pull request or changeset changes on WikiPlex. The CodePlex team values your feedback. • install clamav from surceforge

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I'm affraid I've installed a virus on my computer (I've clicked a link which was a virus), I'd prefere to check if everything is fine. I've installed clamAV using Synaptic. The installed version was 0.96.5, while the most recent version is 0.97.6. When I was trying to update virus database, I got a warning that the version of clamAV I'm using is outdated. Since I didn't know how to update the software by Synaptic or apt (both show the installed version as the newest) I've uninstalled all and downloaded the recent version from sourceforge. I've unpacked the tar.gz archive, entered the folder but when I type ./configure I'm getting the message: configure: error: Please install zlib and zlib-devel packages When I type sudo aptitude install zlib zlib-devel The terminal output says there is no such packages (there is no package zlib-devel and there is many packages which name contain zlib). I suppose the link contained probably the Windows virus, but I'd prefere to make sure there is nothing in my computer. As well as I'm not sure if the virus, even without harming my system, can send itself to my e-mail contacts or not.

• More Tables or More Databases?

  I got an e-mail from someone that has an interesting situation. He has 15,000 customers, and he asks if he should have a database for their data per customer. Without a LOT more data it’s impossible to say, of course, but there are some general concepts to keep in mind. Whenever you’re segmenting data, it’s all about boundary choices. You have not only boundaries around how big the data will get, but things like how many objects (tables, stored procedures and so on) that will be involved, if there are any cross-sections of data (do they share location or product information) and – very important – what are the security requirements? From the answer to these types of questions, you now have the choice of making multiple tables in a single database, or using multiple databases. A database carries some overhead – it needs a certain amount of memory for locking and so on. But it has a very clean boundary – everything from objects to security can be kept apart. Having multiple users in the same database is possible as well, using things like a Schema. But keeping 15,000 schemas can be challenging as well. My recommendation in complex situations like this is similar to a post on decisions that I did earlier – I lay out the choices on a spreadsheet in rows, and then my requirements at the top in the columns. I  give each choice a number based on how well it meets each requirement. At the end, the highest number wins. And many times it’s a mix – perhaps this person could segment customers into larger regions or districts or products, in a database. Within that database might be multiple schemas for the customers. • fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 using usb stick booted into tty1?

  I just installed ubuntu 12.04 alternate for the first time to give it a try using a usb stick burned with UnetBootIn. It installed without a problem. But it booted into a tty1 console without booting into a GUI. after loging into the tty1 console i typed 'unity'. it appeared that the system doesn't have unity desktop !!! How can it be solved ? My installation didn't show any error. Something worth mentioning: 1. during installation i had to choose an option saying 'customize the system to your needs' something like that i don't remember correctly with options 'SSH server','Mail Server', 'Ubuntu Desktop',.....,'Manual selection of packages' etc. I chose 'Ubuntu Desktop'. I haven't encountered something like this in ubuntu 11.04. to do an installation of alternate iso using UnetBootIn i used '12.04_Hdmedia' option of that software and had to change file extension of .ude to .udeb in /pool/main/l/linux that i found in Alternate ubuntu cdrom detect to go around with the cdrom detection problem. I have a 945G intel graphics.

• Sending Emails from existing SMTP host from Ubuntu Server

  I feel like my problem is very simple, but I've been trying for quite some time and haven't cracked it. You experienced server guys will probably laugh at this, but I'm finally at the point I need help or I'll never get anywhere. I have a little box running 12.04 LTS and I've wanted to script some status checks and have the server send me an email and schedule this with cron. I basically want a command line mail client that I can set up as easily as Thunderbird to send through my existing SMTP through the command line. Something that can easily be rolled into my bash scripts. I already have a remote host handling our email, SMTP, MTA, all that garbage. I don't particularly want to set up a relay just to send email when I have one that everyone else in the company already uses. I've tried, but there are too many aspects I don't understand AND I don't see why I should set up something local when we already pay for a remote host to do these things. If I absolutely have to set up sendmail or postfix, then so be it, but I'd appreciate a simple alternative. I'm open to practically anything at this point.

• How to go about designing an intermediate routing filter program to accept input and forward accordingly?

  My predicament: I designed an app, written in Python, to read my mail and check for messages that contain a certain digital signature. It opens these and looks for keywords. If the message contains these keywords, certain related functions area executed on the computer. It is a way I can control my computer from my cell phone without being there. I am still in the beginning stages and it can only currently remotely open and close applications/processes. The obvious issue is security risks. I hoped to spearhead that by requiring and checking for that digital signature. However, my issue comes when I'd like to make this program usable by multiple users. The idea is that the user will send keywords: username and password, for instance, to log into their personal email account and send messages to it to be parsed. Please ignore the security implications of sending non-encoded passwords through email. (Though if you could help me on that part I'd much appreciate it as well, but currently, that is not the scope of my question.) My issue is designing an intermediary process that will take an email/password to read an email and scan for those keywords. The issue is, that the program has to be accessing an email to read the email for the username/password! I have got myself into a loop and cannot figure out how to have this required intermediary program. I could just create an arbitrary email account and have that check for login-creds, but is there a better way of doing this than that? Also, is there a better way of communicating with a computer remotely than this? Especially if the computer is not a server and is behind a router with only a subnet ip? If I am asking this question in the wrong place, I deeply apologize. Any help would be much appreciated!

• SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility Release 9

  There’s another update to my little utility to script a SQL Server’s configuration.  I use this for two purposes.  First, I use it to keep my database mirroring servers up to date.  Second, I capture the output in a version control system and keep that for historical reference. In release 3.0.9 I made the following changes: Rewrote the encrypted trigger scripting.  It will now list the encrypted triggers in a comment in the table script but can’t actually script them. It now scripts any server event notifications. You can script a single database using the /scriptdb flag.  Please note that it will also script the instance and system databases when it does this. It will script any user-defined endpoints.  This will capture your mirroring endpoints and more importantly any service broker endpoints. It will gracefully skip database mail on the Express Edition. It still doesn’t support SQL Server 2012.  I think that’s the next feature to add though.

• What version was installed? x64 or i686? What's the difference exactly?

  Okay, so heres my problem. I recently started migrating several services to individual VMs on my box, using VirtualBox 4.1. I created a new VirtualBox VM with guest type "Ubuntu (64 Bit)". I've already done this before and it worked like a charm. I then installed unbutu server (12.04) from the exact same dvd image. All the time I thought that it should have installed x64. I already put a few hours work into the new VM, migrating the webserver and mail system etc. Today I tried installing a x64 piece of software and it suddenly told me that it needed x64 and I had only i686. I checked uname -a and this is what it gave me: Linux hostname 3.2.0-29-generic-pae #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:25:43 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Any guesses what went wrong? All the time I was thinking I had a x64 system. Any way to move to a "real" x64? I have a second VM on this host which is running x64 just fine .. P.S.: grep --color=always -iw lm /proc/cpuinfo returns lm among the flags.

• Thunderbird: "Could not initialize the application's security component" [closed]

  In Thunderbird, on startup, I get the error message: "Could not initialize the application's security component" The message continues to check permissions of the profile, and free disk space. df -h shows, that I have 19G free disk space. find . -not -perm -644 -not -perm -600 -ls shows: No file without rw-permissions for me. Before the error occured, thunderbird worked well. But I changed my main mail-account. I had two, let's call them A and B, and used mainly A, but now I wanted to deaktivate it, and receive and send automatically via the second. I Had problems moving the filters from inbox A to inbox B (missing copy-functionality). In the web, I found (mollazine) hints, to move key3.db, cert8.db and secmode.db out of the way, but it didn't work for me. Another hint was to uninstall Quickcam(?. sic!), but I don't have Quickcam. A third to recreate the profile, but I have subdirectories, filters, addressbook, groups - mails back to the year 2003. I don't want to risk the loss of data. The whole errormessage is: Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features. When I open the error-console, it is empty.

  I´ve to make an offer to a client who wants me to develope a web-service for him. I have some trouble calculating the pricing - can you help me? Here is a rough outline of the project: It´s a portal on which various artists and entertainers can register and administrate there profile (texts, gallerie, some embedded videos, choose categories and radius of offer, etc). Other user can browse the artists by 3-4 level categories and countries/staats. If someone wants to hire a artists, he can put them in an "shopping-basket" and can mail everyone in his basket. The Artists can answer them with a form on the website (he doesn't get the email of the other person). Users should be able to comment/rate the artists. But if an artists wants this comments/ratings visible on his profile he must pay, and after that, the admin of the site must activate this comments/ratings. So, no more information given, what would you charge (ca.)? Edit: It´ll be developed with php/codeigniter. A .psd design is already there.

• Unable to install Xdebug

  I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up? The concern was that every time an app setting was read from the Web.Config file, the disk would be accessed. With many app settings and many users, it was believed performance would suffer. Their intent was to create a class to hold all the settings, instantiate it and fill it from the Web.Config file on startup. Then, all the settings would be in RAM. I knew this was not correct and didn't want to just say so without any corroboration, so I did some searching. Surprisingly, this is a common misconception. I found other code postings that cached the app settings from Web.Config. Many people even thanked the posters for the code. In a later post, the student said their text book recommended caching the Web.Config file. OK, here's the deal. The Web.Config file is already cached. You do not need to re-cache it. The reason the misconception is prevalent may be because it's hard to search for Web.Config and cache without getting a lot of hits on how to setup caching in the Web.Config file.   Synchronous message support has been enabled in Oracle B2B 11G. This would help customers to send the business message and receive the corresponding business response synchronously. We would like to keep this blog entry as three part series, first one would carry Oracle B2B configuration related details followed by 'how it can be consumed and utilized in an enterprise' using composites backed model. And, the last one would talk about more sophisticated seeded support built on Oracle B2B platform (Note: the last one is still in description phase and ETA hasn't been finalized yet). Details: In an effort to enable synchronous processing in Oracle B2B, we provided a platform using the existing 'callout' mechanism. In this case, we expect the 'callout' attached to the agreement to deliver incoming business message (inbound) to back-end application and get the corresponding business response from back-end and deliver it to Oracle B2B as its output. The output of 'callout' would be processed as outbound message and the same will be attached as a response for the inbound message. Requirements to enable Sync Support: Outbound side: Outbound Agreement - to send business message request Inbound Agreement - to receive business message response Inbound side: Inbound Agreement - to receive business message request Outbound Agreement - to send business message response Agreement Level Callout - to deliver the inbound request to back-end and get the corresponding business response This feature is supported only for HTTP based transport to exchange messages with Trading Partners. One may initiate the outbound message (enqueue) using any of the available Transports in Oracle B2B. Configuration: Outbound side: Please add "syncresponse=true" as "Additional Transport Header" parameter for remote Trading Partner's HTTP delivery channel configuration. This would enable Oracle B2B to process the HTTP response as inbound message and deliver the same to back-end application. All other configuration related to Agreement and Document setup remain same. Inbound side: There is no change in Agreement and Document setup. To enable "Sync Support", you need to build a 'callout' that takes the responsibility of delivering inbound message to back-end and get the corresponding business response from the back-end and attach the same as its output. Oracle B2B treats the output of 'callout' as outbound message and deliver it to Trading Partner as synchronous HTTP response. The requests that needs to processed synchronously should be received by "syncreceiver" (http://:/b2b/syncreceiver) endpoint in Oracle B2B. Exception Handling: Existing Oracle B2B exception handling applies to this use case as well. • WIF, ADFS 2 and WCF&ndash;Part 3: ADFS Setup

  In part 1 of this series I briefly gave an overview of the ADFS / WS-Trust infrastructure. In part 2 we created a basic WCF service that uses ADFS for authentication. This part will walk you through the steps to register the service in ADFS 2. I could provide screenshots for all the wizard pages here – but since this is really easy – I just go through the necessary steps in textual form. Step 1 – Select Data Source Here you can decide if you want to import a federation metadata file that describes the service you want to register. In that case all necessary information is inside the metadata document and you are done. FedUtil (a tool that ships with WIF) can generate such metadata for the most simple cases. Another tool to create metadata can be found here. We choose ‘Manual’ here. Step 2 – Specify Display Name I guess that’s self explaining. Step 3 – Choose Profile Choose ‘ADFS 2 Profile’ here. Step 4 – Configure Certificate Remember that we specified a certificate (or rather a private key) to be used to decrypting incoming tokens in the previous post. Here you specify the corresponding public key that ADFS 2 should use for encrypting the token. Step 5 – Configure URL This page is used to configure WS-Federation and SAML 2.0p support. Since we are using WS-Trust you can leave both boxes unchecked. Step 6 – Configure Identifier Here you specify the identifier (aka the realm, aka the appliesTo) that will be used to request tokens for the service. This value will be used in the token request and is used by ADFS 2 to make a connection to the relying party configuration and claim rules. Step 7 – Configure Issuance Authorization Rules Here you can configure who is allowed to request token for the service. I won’t go into details here how these rules exactly work – that’s for a separate blog post. For now simply use the “Permit all users” option. OK – that’s it. The service is now registered at ADFS 2.   I just uploaded the RC of IdentityServer to Codeplex. This release is feature complete and if I don’t get any bug reports this is also pretty much the final V1. Changes from B1 The configuration data access is now based on EF 4.1 code first. This makes it much easier to use different data stores. For RTM I will also provide a SQL script for SQL Server so you can move the configuration to a separate machine (e.g. for load balancing scenarios). I included the ASP.NET Universal Providers in the download. This adds official support for SQL Azure, SQL Server and SQL Compact for the membership, roles and profile features. Unfortunately the Universal Provider use a different schema than the original ASP.NET providers (that sucks btw!) – so I made them optional. If you want to use them go to web.config and uncomment the new provider. The relying party registration entries now have added fields to add extra data that you want to couple with the RP. One use case could be to give the UI a hint how the login experience should look like per RP. This allows to have a different look and feel for different relying parties. I also included a small helper API that you can use to retrieve the RP record based on the incoming WS-Federation query string. WS-Federation single sign out is now conforming to the spec. Certificate based endpoint identities for SSL endpoints are optional now. Added a initial configuration “wizard”. This sets up the signing certificate, issuer URI and site title on the first run. Installation This is still a “developer” release – that means it ships with source code that you have to build it etc. But from that point it should be a little more straightforward as it used to be: Make sure SSL is configured correctly for IIS Map the WebSite directory to a vdir in IIS Run the web site. This should bring up the initial configuration Make sure the worker process account has access to the signing certificate private key Make sure all your users are in the “IdentityServerUsers” role in your role store. Administrators need the “IdentityServerAdministrators” role That should be it. A proper documentation will be hopefully available soon (any volunteers?). Please provide feedback! thanks!

  I am an entrepreneur of a small software developer company. The flagship product is developed by myself and my company grew up to 14 people. One of pride is that we've never have to be invested or loaned. The core development team is 5 people. 3 are seniors and 2 are juniors. After the first release, we've received many issues from our customers. Most of them are bug issues, customization needs, usage questions and upgrade requests. The issues from customers are incoming many times everyday, so it takes little time or much time of our developers. Because of our product is a software development kit(SDK) so most of questions can be answered only from our developers. And, for resolving bug issues, developers must be involved. Estimating time to resolve bug is hard. I fully understand it. However, our developers insist they cannot set the any due date of each project because they are busy doing technical supports and bug fixes by issues from customers everyday. Of course, they never do overwork. I suggested them an idea to divide the team into two parts: one for focusing on development by milestones, other for doing technical supports and bug fixes without setting due days. Then we could announce release plan officially. After the finish of release, two parts exchange the role for next milestone. However, they say they "NO, because it is impossible to share knowledge and design document fully." They still say they cannot set the release date and they request me to alter the due date flexibly. They does not fix the due date of each milestone. Fortunately, our company is not loaned and invested so we are not chocked. But I think it is bad idea to keep this situation. I know the story of ant and grasshopper. Our customers are tired of waiting forever of our release date. Companies consume limited time and money. If flexible due date without limit could be acceptable, could they accept flexible salary day? What is the root cause of our problem? All that I want is to fix and achieve precisely due date of each milestone without losing frequent technical supports. I think there must be solution for this situation. Please answer me. Our tools and ways of project management are Trello, Mantis-like issue tracker, shared calendar software and scrum(collected cards into series of 'small and high completeness' projects).

• My Website (ports) Have Been Hijacked!

  This is one of the scary problems that turns out to have a pretty easy solution. I tried to view one of my websites hosted by IIS on my primary workstation and the site wouldn’t render.   I checked IIS Admin and the site was there, but I couldn’t access it on either port 443 or port 80. In reviewing the event log I found the following entry: The World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWW Service) did not register the URL prefix http://x.x.x.x:80/ for site 1. The site has been disabled. The data field contains the error number I disabled the IIS Service (issued Net Stop W3svc from an admin command prompt) and then scanned for anything listening on port 80. C:\Users\cdarrigo>netstat -ano |findstr 80   TCP    0.0.0.0:80             0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING       3124 This confirmed that something had hijacked my ports.  I had another process that was listening on port 80 and it was preventing IIS from serving up my site.   A quick phone call to a friend taught me that the last number shown above (3124) is the process id of the process that's listening on the port.  So whatever process had PID 3124 had to be stopped. I scanned my process list, and determined it was, much to my surprise, Skype.  I exited the Skype application and restarted the IIS service, then manually restarted the web site.  This time, browsing to my site resulted in successfully viewing my site. So why was Skype listening on those ports?  A quick Google search revealed the answer: “Skype listens on those ports to increase quality.” really? “you might become a supernode if those ports are open.” No thanks.  I’m not sure how accurate those statements are, but I want to disable this behavior in Skype none the less. Fortunately Skype provides a configuration option to turn off this behavior.   Launch Skype and log in.  From the Tools menu, select Options Select the Advanced options and then Connection Uncheck the box Use Port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections Back to development bliss.

• App_Offline.htm, taking site down for maintenance

  There is much simpler and graceful way to shut down a site while doing upgrade to avoid the problem of people accessing site in the middle of a content update.   Basically, if you place file with name 'app_offline.htm' with below contents in the root of a web application directory, ASP.NET will shut-down the application,  and stop processing any new incoming requests for that application.  ASP.NET will also then respond to all requests for dynamic pages in the application by sending back the content of the app_offline.htm file (for example: you might want to have a “site under construction” or “down for maintenance” message).   Then after upgrade, just rename/delete app_offline.htm file…and the site would be back to normal.
