  • I installed ubuntu, the installer told me to reboot afterwards. I dd, and now linux wont boot

    Im trying to dual boot between mac 10.6.8 and ubuntu 11.10. I have a macbook pro 8,1. So i installed from a 10.04 disk because the install window makes more sense to me, and it doesnt give me errors or anything. Also, any versions of ubuntu after that dont boot from disk for whatever reason. (i think its having to do with the efi boot thing. i have to get ubuntu 11.10 to boot from a usb with folders bootefiboot.iso) Then my plan after that was after the ubuntu 10.04 install took care of all the swap and stuff for me without being messy, to upgrade to 11.10. So here i have 10.04 booting successfully back and forth from mac osx no problem. I put in my 11.10 usb and the installer gives me the option to "update 10.04 to 11.10" bingo, jackpot, thats what i want. Everything proceeds as normal, as EVERY OTHER install of ubuntu i have ever done, then the installer finishes and says HEY! im finished! Continue testing or reboot now! So i reboot, and what do i get??? A black screen that says the file system isnt found, to enter a boot disk and press any key. WHAT THE HELL????? so i boot the 11.10 installer again from usb, and select "erase 11.10 and install 11.10", installer proceeds normally, and asks me to reboot. I reboot and get the SAME THING. Please, someone, help me get this right here. This is my first time actually dual booting between mac and linux. Usually i just wipe off osx completely and install ubuntu but i actually need to keep my mac partition this time. I have successfully installed 11.10 on this machine before, but that was when i did a clean install. Help?

    I've gotten a couple more questions about the installation process for Ops Center. "Can I install on any SPARC / X86 based platform?" Ops Center can run on Oracle Solaris on either architecture, or on Linux. The Certified Systems Matrix lists the supported OSes, and the Linux and Solaris install guides go into more detail about the hardware and OS requirements. "Can we install it on local zones or LDOMS?" Zones, yes; LDOMS, sort of. You can install the Enterprise Controller in a local zone. There are a few caveats, which are explained in the Preparing a Non-Global Zone section. You can also install a Proxy Controller in an Oracle Solaris 11 zone. Agent Controllers, which are the part of the infrastructure that's installed on managed systems, can be put on zones or LDOMS. "Do we need any dedicated network ports from all agent monitoring systems?"  Yes. The port requirements are covered in the Network Port Requirements and Protocols table, which is in the feature reference guide as well as in the install guides.

It's now a matter of a few clicks, because all the plugins are now all in NetBeans update server. Here is a new way to install and integrate Java ME SDK plugins for NetBeans. 1.   • How do I create the "Gnome-Desktop-Item-Edit" program's launch icon with root privileges and more?

    I personally dont prefer running commands in terminal to achieve a task and prefer apps to execute the job. Creating launcher for apps is one such command where I prefer the gnome-desktop-item-edit application for creating launchers. If the gnome package is installed, just searching "create launcher" opens the app. But, it doesnt serve any purpose, because for starters the application cannot create launchers for various apps without root permission and the location where the apps have to be created. Usually the launcher apps with root permission can be created at /usr/share/applications and without root permission at /.local/share/applications. I dont prefer the latter location as it is vulnerable to deletion. Hence, in order to create the launchers through gnome with root, everytime I am forced to open this through terminal using the below command! $ sudo gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/.local/share/applications --create-new I dont want to open terminal everytime I want to create an application launcher on unity! I am able to lock the "Create Launcher" App in the Launcher, but not with root privileges So I want to be able to create the "Create Launcher" app shortcut on unity with default root privileges and for the app to create the launchers at usr/share/applications by default! Please help! P.S. I dont have enough rep points to add screenshots to help with the question!

    In our environment we have multiple ERP servers plus data that are coming from multiple sources. I need to create a development roadmap for the coming years as it is obvious that side applications will be needed for many things. The choice is that the development will occur with Microsoft technologies. This means that I will be building either web apps (MVC, web forms e.t.c) or standard windows forms applications. The thing here is that I will be creating classes that will encapsulate the business logic that I want to apply to the different projects. What I thought so far: 1) Create class libraries dlls containing the required logic 2) Reuse these libs in my apps. But what about the web apps? Should I use the dlls directly or I should encapsulate them in web services and consume the web services in web apps? In general I would like to find out how should I build my strategy.

  • Create new terminal commands

    I recently installed eclipse the manual way. Extracting the file, setting up eclipse.desktop etc. It all works flawlessly. I also know it is possible to install eclipsee using sudo apt-get install eclipse-platform. If I use this method I can use the command eclipse in the terminal, and the program will start. Now the manual way I used does not enable the eclipse-command in the terminal. Instead if I use eclipse-command it asks me to install eclipse from the Softwarecenter (sudo apt-get install eclipse-platform). I wondered if there was some way of setting up a command like this to start eclipse? If so, can I do it for other programs like Apache-Maven mvn-command? I don't want to use "aliases" because I cannot setup and eclipse alias, when "eclipse" is listed in the apt repository. It seems as if only if I install the eclipse from apt-get install I can start eclipse from a single command in the terminal. I appreciate any help, and thanks in advance!

    Slowly but surely apps have been coming out for Windows Phone 7, I must admit that was my biggest concern on moving from the iPhone to the Windows Phone.  Not the fact apps would come slowly, but when they would come.  The iPhone side of things had very nice apps, and moving into a not so populated app landscape was an interesting thought. Anyway, yes there are apps I miss … but now it is one less! WordPress released the “for Windows Phone 7” app. Great experience and layout for the tool.   • Dual Booting WIndows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04

    I have Windows 7 32 bit installed on a 64 bit Laptop. I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 using USB. I created the bootable usb using live usb installer. I have 6 partitions in Windows 7 of which in Windows 7, I created a partition of 50 GB and also having an unallocated space of 50 Gb. I will install Ubuntu 12.04 in any one of these space. When I am booting from USB and selecting the option of "Try Ubuntu" and In Ubuntu desktop, when I click "Install Ubuntu 12.04" , and choosing the option as " Something Else " ( I dont want to Install Ubuntu alongside Windows or want to erase Windows totally ), only 3 paritions getting listed. One is system memory reserved as 100 mb. Second is C drive and third partition is listed as a whole space ie remaining space of the entire hard disk is listed instead of partitions. I tried Gparted Editor and it also lists the same as Ubuntu 12.04 So whats the problem and how can I make the Ubuntu to detect all the partitions so that I can install in the unallocated space or in the 50 GB Partition ? ( P.S - When I try the same in my 32 bit desktop, it is detecting all the partitions )

    Suppose we have the following setup under Linux, .so library named "libcnt.so" and 3 user space apps: "app1", "app2", "app3". This library does 1 simple thing, it says to the app (app dynamically links the library at runtime) by how many apps it is already linked. Apps should have access to link counter. My knowledge in C and Linux is somewhat limited in this aspect, but as I understand this information should be stored in a global variable inside the shared object. Something like: in libcnt.h extern int cnt_loads; in libcnt.c int cnt_loads = 0; // where each linking increments this counter or something... So, my question is how it should be declared and/or defined inside .so library to guaranty that multiple apps from user space get the same instance of that variable counter?

  • Why would autoconf/automake project link against installed library instead of local development libr

    I'm creating a library libgdata that has some tests and non-installed programs. I am running into the problem that once I've installed the library once, the programs seem to be linking to the installed version and not the local version in ../src/libgdata.la any longer. What could cause this? Am I doing something horribly wrong? Here is what my test/Makefile.am looks like: INCLUDES = -I$(top_srcdir)/src/ -I$(top_srcdir)/test/ # libapiutil contains all of our dependencies! As far as I can tell, it is linking against the newly built library (../src/libgdata.la) based on the make output, so I'm not sure why this would be happening. If i remove the installed files, the local changes to src/* are picked up just fine. UPDATE 2 I did two tests. First, I did this after blowing away my dev-install directory (--prefix) and in that case, it creates test/.libs/lt-gdatacalendar. Once I have installed the library, though, it creates test/.libs/gdatacalendar instead.   • Used DBAN to wipe Lenovo u410 then installed Ubuntu. Need to install windows 8, but I get an error.

    When I try to boot from my windows 8 USB (tested on a separate PC), I get this error text "The boot configuration data for your pc is missing or contains errors." I want to install windows again so I can fix a battery issue I'm having. Lenovo's power management app has an option to keep the battery at 60% if the laptop stays plugged in most of the time. I enabled this, then formatted without changing it back. I think there might be a raid setup that I may need to remove or something. I don't mind removing Ubuntu and starting fresh. I would just love some help with all this, I'm a noob when it comes to Linux.

  • I/O errors are reported when I try to install Ubuntu, but the SMART data is good. Is my hard disk dying?

    When I try to install linux, it tells me there is an input output error on dev sda. I have tried both Ubuntu and Mint on two different computers. So that narrows it down to the hdd. After hours of googling and trying different things I tried making the hardrive ext4 with gparted but that comes up with an error. This makes me think that the hdd is bad. There are a few reasons I think the hdd isn't bad. I can use the hdd in windows fully. Windows and gparted disk health checks both say it is fine. Its SMART data is all good. So... help?

  • What are the benefits of a disk install vs. Wubi? And can I migrate my settings easily?

    I chose to do the Wubi install because it was short, simple, and easy to reverse (no messing with partitions required). To be honest, I can handle the lack of a hibernate function. I haven't really heard many other benefits of installing on a separate partition than hibernation and negligibly faster hard disk read/write. Yet almost everyone I encounter seems to have opted for the disk installation. Are there more benefits I should be aware of, especially as a college student who wants a fast, efficient machine for documents, web browsing, etc. (nothing big like gaming, I can run that on Windows)? Also, I have a fair amount of settings and packages installed that I spent a bit of time on and would rather not have to do again. Is there any way I can migrate all of these settings from the virtual disk on my C:/ drive (Wubi installation) to the disc installation in another partition? (I have a 16GB USB drive if that'll do the trick)

  • Reconnect to GPRS from J2ME

    Dear All, I have a little problem. I have developed a midlet application that call some webservices through internet. I'm using cell phones with GPRS connection. For some time it runs as I wanted, run the apps, call the webservices through the GPRS, it returns the result, call the webservices again, and so on. But say, I call the webservices and after the apps return the result I needed, I left it for a while. The next time I continue to access the webservices, the apps takes a while to connect through the GPRS. In nokia, it is marked with a G in a box. In SE it is marked with a glowing globe. This 'G' in the box or the glowing globe will appear after a while or won't appear at all, but the apps is still trying to connect to the internet. Does it come from my apps or it come from the cell phone? And could I know [or the apps knows] that at the moment the apps tries to connect the GPRS is ready? Thanks a lot for your responses...

A recent (lengthy) post on the Forms forums chronicles the problems some of you have had installing F&R on a development machine. See the link in the headline of this post for the main one. When installing, here are some points to bear in mind: Download and install Weblogic Server first. http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/middleware/index.htmlFind the Forms and Reports (and Disco and Portal) zip files here. Download them to the desktop (or some other temporary directory of your choosing). Unzip both of the two zip files into the same new directory (maybe called 'stage') and check that you have 4 directories in the stage dir when you are finished unzipping: 'Disk1', 'Disk2', 'Disk3' and 'Disk4'. These folders are specified in the zip file structure and must be preserved for the setup executable to work. If you use WinZip and have a right click menu option that say "Extract to here", use that by right click-dragging the zip file onto the newly created directory. Don't use the "Extract to folder %HOME%\Desktop\ofm_pfrd...disk_1of2" option. That will get you into the trouble that was reported early in this thread. Free up as much memory as you can. Stop services and background processes and virus scanners and databases (you don't need a DB to install Forms) and other things lurking about on your machine. You can restart them when the install is done. Around 1.5 GB free real memory should do it. If it doesn't, free up more if you can. Don't change the swap space unless you know what you are doing. Let Windows handle it. A 1 GB machine will likely not be enough. You will likely need at least 2GB of RAM.Start the install with setup.exe from the 'Disk1' directoryChoose the Install and Configure option unless you have a good reason not to.Choose a unique instance name even if you deinstalled and removed the last install. I suggest using 'asinst_20090722_1' (today's date in ISO format with a running incremented number at the end if you install more than two times on a particular day).Unselect Portal and Discoverer and select the Builders you want.Unselect WebCacheUnselect OHS.Unselect the single sign-on option Check for any failures and choose the retry option if any occur. If that doesn't fix the problem, call Oracle Customer Support .
