  • I do not know whether it should continue to develop this code sharing service :(

    - by user296268
I created an open source Project : TwPaste on github. It provides The Social Source Code and Plain Text Sharing Service. You can post any source code here , All pastes and comments will post to twitter . I'm not sure the usefulness of this project , so I need your feedback to improve it , if you think it is useless , please tell me directly, I'll close it soon. Thanks. • Add save callback to a single ActiveRecord instance, is it possible?

    - by J. Pablo Fernández
Is it possible to add a callback to a single ActiveRecord instance? As a further constraint this is to go on a library so I don't have control over the class (except to monkey-patch it). This is more or less what I want to do: def do_something_creazy message = Message.new message.on_save_call :do_even_more_crazy_stuff end def do_even_more_crazy_stuff(message) puts "Message #{message} has been saved! Hallelujah!" end

  • PDF to PNG Processor - Paperclip

    - by Josh Crowder
I am trying to develop a system in which a user can upload a slideshow (pdf) and it'll export each slide as a png. After some digging around I came across a post on here that suggested using a processor. I've had a go, but I cant get the command to run, if it is running then I don't know what is happening because no errors are being shown. Any help would be appreciated! module Paperclip class Slides < Processor def initialize(file, options = {}, attachment = nill) super @file = file @instance = options[:instance] @current_format = File.extname(@file.path) @basename = File.basename(@file.path, @current_format) end def make dst = Tempfile.new( [ @basename, @format].compact.join(".")) dst.binmode command = <<-end_command -size 640x300 #{ File.expand_path(dst.path) } tester.png end_command begin success = Paperclip.run("convert", command.gsub(/\s+/, " "))) rescue PaperclipCommandLineError raise PaperclipError, "There was an error processing the thumbnail for #{@basename}" end end end end I think my problem is with the convert command... When I run that command by hand, it works but it doesn't give the details of each slide it just executes it. What I need to happen is once its made all the slides, pass back the data to a new model... or I know where all the slides are, but once I get to that point I'm not sure what todo.

  • Understanding the Unix file system and ruby installs without Sudo

    - by JZ
I'm trying to comprehend the Unix file system on my OSX. I'm following wikipedia Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. I understand when I install ruby gems I must use the command sudo gem install but if I omit sudo, problems may occur. Where are gems installed within the file system when I omit sudo? How can I delete these gems? A Fun side question: When I enter cd ~/.gem my terminal is directed to .gem user$, When I enter cd ~/ and list folders using the ls command I can't find a .gem folder. Where is the .gem folder? How does this fit into the Filesystem?

  • Clean Up Controller, Update Item Quantity within Cart

    - by Karl Entwistle
Hi guys I was wondering if anyone could help me out, I need to clean up this controller as the resulting code to simply update an items quantity if it already exists seems way too complex. class LineItemsController < ApplicationController def create @product = Product.find(params[:product_id]) if LineItem.exists?(:cart_id => current_cart.id) item = LineItem.find(:first, :conditions => [ "cart_id = #{@current_cart.id}"]) LineItem.update(item.id, :quantity => item.quantity + 1) else @line_item = LineItem.create!(:cart => current_cart, :product => @product, :quantity => 1, :unit_price => @product.price) flash[:notice] = "Added #{@product.name} to cart." end redirect_to root_url end end ` As always any help is much appreciated, the code should be fairly self explanatory, thanks :) PS posted it here as well as it looks a bit funny on here http://pastie.org/994059

  • add method to reflection-object and named-scopes

    - by toy
I Like to add a method to my has_many relation in the way that it is applyed on the relation object. I got an Order wich :has_many line_items I like to write things like order.line_items.calculate_total # returns the sum of line_items this I could do with: :has_many line_items do def calculate_total ... end end but this would not be applyed to named_scopes like payalbes_only: order.line_items.payables_only.calculate_total here calculate total would receive all line_items of order and not the scoped ones from payables_only-scope. My log tells me that the paybles_only scope is even not applied to the sql.

  • Attachment_fu file saving problem

    - by Anand
    Attachment_fu plugin is kind of old, but I have to modify an old app and I can't use another plugin like paperclip etc. So here's the code without further ado Submissions table structure --------------------------- | content_type | varchar(255) | YES | | NULL | filename | varchar(255) | YES | | NULL app/models/submission.rb ------------------------ has_attachment :storage => :file_system, :path_prefix => 'public/submissions', :max_size => 2.megabytes, :content_type => ['application/pdf', 'application/msword', 'text/plain'] app/models/user.rb ------------------ has_one :submission, :dependent => :destroy app/views/user/some_action.html.erb ----------------------------------- <% form_for :user, :url => { :action => "some_action" }, :html => {:multipart => true} do |f| %> .... <%= file_field_tag "submission[uploaded_data]" %> <%end%> app/controllers/user_controller.rb ---------------------------------- @user = User.find_user(session[:user_id]) @submission = @user.submission if request.post? @submission.uploaded_data = params[:submission][:uploaded_data] end When the form is submitted, the database fields "content_type" and "filename" get updated and display the correct values, but the file does not appear in public/submissions/ directory. I have checked the permissions on the submissions directory. What am I missing? Many Thanks

  • Please suggest some alternative to Drupal

    - by abovesun
Drupal propose completely different approach in web development (comparing with RoR like frameworks) and it is extremely good from development speed perspective. For example, it is quite easy to clone 90% of stackoverflow functionality using Drupal. But it has several big drawbacks: it is f''cking slow (100-400 requests per page) db structure very complicated, need at least 2 tables for easy content (entity) type, CCK fields very easy generate tons of new db tables anti-object oriented, rather aspect-oriented bad "view" layer implementation, no strange forward layouts and so on. After all this items I can say I like Drupal, but I would like something same, but more elegant and more object oriented. Probably something like http://drupy.net/ - drupal emulation on the top of django. P.S. I wrote this question not for new holy word flame, just write if you know alternative that uses something similar approach.

  • RoR: Replace_html with partial and collection not functioning

    - by Jack
I am trying to create a tabbed interface using the prototype helper method "replace_html." I have three different partials I am working with. The first one is the 'main tab' and it is loaded automatically like so: <div id = "grid"> <% things_today = things.find_things_today %> <%= render :partial => "/todaything", :collection => things_today, :as =>:thing %> </div> ...which works fine. Similarly, I have a _tomorrowthing partial which would replace the content in the 'grid' div like so: <%things_tomorrow = things.find_things_tomorrow%> <%= link_to_function('Tomorrow',nil, :id=>'tab') do |page| page.replace_html 'grid' , :partial => '/tomorrowthing',:collection => things_tomorrow, :as => :thing end %> If I click on this tab nothing happens at all. Using firebug, the only errors I find are a missing ) after argument list which is contained in the Element.update block where the link_to_function is called. What am I doing wrong?

  • Cake PHP Routing issue

    - by Smickie
Hi, I need to do some special routing in cake, but can't for the life of me figure it out. I have a shop controller at /shop, the format of the url will be: /shop/:category/:sub_category/:product_slug In the routing I need to send each part of the url to a different action, for example if the url was just /shop/cakes it would go to the category action of shop. However if the url was /shop/cakes/macaroons or /shop/cakes/fairy it would go to the sub category action on the shop controller. And the the same again for /shop/cakes/macaroons/pistachio would go to the product action on the shop controller. How would I go about this in the routing? Something starting with Router::connect('/shop/:category/:sub_category/:product_slug' ... Or am I way off the mark? Thanks.

  • ActiveRecord Save Dependent Model

    - by Dmitriy Likhten
I am trying to save a model with it's dependency models being saved. Model1 has_many :model2, :autosave => true Model2 belongs_to :model1 has_many :model3, :autosave => true Model3 belongs_to :model2 I want to save Model1, and have Model2 and 3 save as well. I tried this without and with the autosave feature. What winds up happening is Model1 is saved, Model2 is saved, Model3 is untouched. Is there a way to tell ActiveRecord that for this save I want to save the model and all child models all at once? As a side note, all 3 are just created and are not in the database. I cannot do .create on the models because I cannot save them until all validation passes and all business logic succeeds (has to be a transaction).

  • acts_as_xapian jobs table

    - by Grnbeagle
Hi, Can someone explain to me the inner workings of acts_as_xapian_jobs table? I ran into an issue with the acts_as_xapian plugin recently, where I kept getting the following error when it creates an object with xapian indexed fields: Mysql::Error: Duplicate entry 'String-2147483647' for key 2: INSERT INTO `acts_as_xapian_jobs` (`action`, `model`, `model_id`) VALUES ('update', 'String', 23730251831560) It turns out the model_id exceeded the max int value of 2147483647. The workaround was to update model_id to use bigint. Why would the model_id be so huge? By looking at content of acts_as_xapian_jobs, it seems it creates a row for every field that is being indexed.. Understanding how a job gets created in the table would help a great deal. Here's a sampling of the table: mysql> select * from acts_as_xapian_jobs limit 5\G *************************** 1. row *************************** id: 19 model: String model_id: 23804037900560 action: update *************************** 2. row *************************** id: 49 model: String model_id: 23804037191200 action: update *************************** 3. row *************************** id: 79 model: String model_id: 23804037932180 action: update *************************** 4. row *************************** id: 109 model: String model_id: 23804037101700 action: update *************************** 5. row *************************** id: 139 model: String model_id: 23804037722160 action: update Thanks in advance, Amie

  • Determine if count of related model > 0

    - by Lowgain
I have a model called Stem. I need a 'thumbs up' feature, so I have created a second model called Thumb, which consists of stem_id and user_id. I'm also using the restful authentication plugin for user credentials. I have the 'thumbs up' button working, which adds a row to the thumbs table fine, but I'd like to be able to check if the currently logged in user has already given a thumbs up to this particular stem. I tried adding this to the Stem model: def thumbed Thumb.count_by_sql ["SELECT COUNT(*) FROM thumbs WHERE user_id = ? AND stem_id = ?", current_user.id, self.id ] end The problem here is that the stem model has no access to the current_user variable the the controllers have. Is there a way I can get access to this property, or alternatively, is there another way I could go about checking this? I was hoping to get this as a property in the model because the stems are passed over to a Flex app using RubyAMF. Thanks!

  • Undefined method `add' on a cucumber step that usually works.

    - by Josiah Kiehl
I have a path defined: when /the admin home\s?page/ "/admin/" I have scenario that is passing: Scenario: Let admins see the admin homepage Given "pojo" is logged in And "pojo" is an "admin" And I am on the admin home page Then I should see "Hi there." And I have a scenario that is failing: Scenario: Review flagged photo Given "pojo" is logged in And "pojo" is an "admin" ...bunch of steps that create stuff in the database... And I am on the admin home page Then ... the rest of the steps The step that fails in the second one is "And I am on the admin home page" which passes just fine in the first scenario. Here's the error I get: And I am on the admin home page # features/step_definitions/web_steps.rb:18 undefined method `add' for {}:Hash (NoMethodError) ./app/controllers/admin_controller.rb:13:in `index' ./app/controllers/admin_controller.rb:11:in `each' ./app/controllers/admin_controller.rb:11:in `index' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/benchmark.rb:308:in `realtime' ./features/step_definitions/web_steps.rb:19:in `/^(?:|I )am on (.+)$/' features/admin.feature:52:in `And I am on the admin home page' This is very odd... why would it be fine in the first case, and not in the second where the only difference are a bunch of steps that create records in the db? [edit] Here's the add stuff to database step: Given /^there is a "([^\"]*)" with the following:$/ do |model, table| model.constantize.create!(table.rows_hash) end

  • Eclipse users: Do you use Aptana too?

    - by Glenn
This San Mateo development company makes a freely downloadable convenient packaging of many plugins for Eclipse called Aptana. I was recently in an environment where Aptana came pre-installed. Not only is it a good IDE for RoR, it also does a somewhat decent job (sans debugging) for PHP, Python, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. According to their own web site, their IDE also supports Adobe Air and the iPhone. If you are currently using Eclipse, then do you also use Aptana too? What, if any, are the drawbacks to using Aptana?

  • How to cache pages using background jobs ?

    - by Alexandre
Definitions: resource = collection of database records, regeneration = processing these records and outputting the corresponding html Current flow: Receive client request Check for resource in cache If not in cache or cache expired, regenerate Return result The problem is that the regeneration step can tie up a single server process for 10-15 seconds. If a couple of users request the same resource, that could result in a couple of processes regenerating the exact same resource simultaneously, each taking up 10-15 seconds. Wouldn't it be preferrable to have the frontend signal some background process saying "Hey, regenerate this resource for me". But then what would it display to the user? "Rebuilding" is not acceptable. All resources would have to be in cache ahead of time. This could be a problem as the database would almost be duplicated on the filesystem (too big to fit in memory). Is there a way to avoid this? Not ideal, but it seems like the only way out. But then there's one more problem. How to keep the same two processes from requesting the regeneration of a resource at the same time? The background process could be regenerating the resource when a frontend asks for the regeneration of the same resource. I'm using PHP and the Zend Framework just in case someone wants to offer a platform-specific solution. Not that it matters though - I think this problem applies to any language/framework. Thanks!

  • How to drop a primary key using ActiveRecord migrations

    - by knoopx
Due to a mistake I forgot to add :id => false to a has_many :trough table creation migration. Now I reverted the association back to a has_and_belongs_to_many and ActiveRecord throws an exception complaining about the presence of the primary key. I couldn't find any reference on the ActiveRecord documentation so, do you know if there is any standard, clean way of doing it?

  • Problem with Railscast #197 - Nested Model Form Part 2

    - by sscirrus
    I'm trying to implement Ryan's Railscast #197 in a system with Questions, Answers, and (multiple choice) Options. http://railscasts.com/episodes/197-nested-model-form-part-2. I have successfully implemented the nesting among these forms/partials. The simpler 'check box' way to delete records works properly. The problem occurs when I try to add/delete records. I have copied the code exactly as it appears in his Railscast: #new.html.erb <%= javascript_include_tag :defaults, :cache => true %> <% f.fields_for :in_options do |builder| %> <%= render "option_fields", :f => builder %> <% end %> #_option_fields.html.erb partial <%= f.hidden_field :_destroy %> <%= link_to_function "remove", "remove_fields(this)" %> #application_helper.rb (exact same as #197) def link_to_remove_fields(name, f) f.hidden_field(:_destroy) + link_to_function(name, "remove_fields(this)") end def link_to_add_fields(name, f, association) new_object = f.object.class.reflect_on_association(association).klass.new fields = f.fields_for(association, new_object, :child_index => "new_#{association}") do |builder| render(association.to_s.singularize + "_fields", :f => builder) end link_to_function(name, h("add_fields(this, \"#{association}\", \"#{escape_javascript(fields)}\")")) end #application.js (exact same as #197. I have an Event.addbehavior below this code.) function remove_fields(link) { $(link).previous("input[type=hidden]").value = "1"; $(link).up(".fields").hide(); } function add_fields(link, association, content) { var new_id = new Date().getTime(); var regexp = new RegExp("new_" + association, "g") $(link).up().insert({ before: content.replace(regexp, new_id) }); } 2 problems: When I click on the 'remove' link it doesn't remove - it just shifts the page up or down. When I include link_to_add_fields "Add Answer", f, :answers, I get undefined method `klass' for nil:NilClass. Thanks everyone.

  • has_one and has_many associations: which side of the association is saved first

    - by SeeBees
I have three simplified models: class Team < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :players has_one :coach end class Player < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :team validates_presence_of :team_id end class Coach < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :team validates_presence_of :team_id end I use the following code to test these models: t = Team.new team.coach = Coach.new team.save! team.save! returns true. But in another test: t = Team.new team.players << Player.new team.save! team.save! gives the following error: > ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid: > Validation failed: Players is invalid > from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/validations.rb:1090:in > `save_without_dirty!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/dirty.rb:87:in `save_without_transactions!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:200:in > `save!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/connection_adapters/abstract/database_statements.rb:136:in > `transaction' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:182:in > `transaction' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:200:in > `save!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:208:in > `rollback_active_record_state!' from > /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.4/lib/active_record/transactions.rb:200:in > `save!' from (irb):14 I figured out when team.save! is called, it first calls player.save!. player needs to validate the presence of the id of the associated team. But at the time player.save! is called, team hasn't been saved yet, and therefore, team_id doesn't yet exist for player. This fails the player's validation, so the error occurs. But on the other hand, team is saved before coach.save!, otherwise the first example will get the same error as the second. So I've concluded that when a has_many bs, a.save! will save bs prior to a. When a has_one b, a.save! will save a prior to b. If I am right, why is this the case? It doesn't seem logical to me. Why has_one and has_many association have different order in saving? Any ideas? Thanks.
