  I need your suggestions guys regarding the project I'm planning to create. I want to create a kiosk software/application that is capable to access database in a server. (So, there's a networking here..)Because the information that will be displayed in a Kiosk screen will be coming from a database in other computer. So my problem here is, I don't know which programming language is the best for this kind of application. I'm thinking about using Visual Basic 6.0 since my group is comfortable using this programming language, but I also want to consider the design. I don't like a plain button. • Low level Linux graphics

  For educational purposes, I'd like to write an application on a Linux environment that can process keyboard events and draw graphics without huge dependencies like X or SDL. I presume that this must be possible, because X and SDL are just programs themselves, so they must rely on other methods inherent to the environment. Is this understanding correct? If so, where might I learn to write such a program? My limited experience tells me that it would involve making calls to the kernel, and/or writing to special files; however, I haven't been able to find any tutorials on the matter (I am not even sure what to Google). Also, in case it is relevant, I am running Debian Squeeze on Virtualbox. I have used a netinst cd without networking, so there isn't much installed on it currently. I will install gcc, but I am hoping I can get by with nothing more.

• Orlando .NET Code Camp 2012 - total success..

  Their site is www.orlandocodecamp.comThis year's camp was held at Seminole State College.It was well worth it.. Took a chance at going.. by getting up at 5am and driving from Jax to Sanford for 2+hr..Run into some old friends and bunch of new ones. Coders are not really good at networking.. but they sure did show up.. attendance was solid 500+ geeks and some sessions were standing room only. MVP John Papa had the room packed out on his every session. Really enjoyed great and inspiring WP7 presentations by MVP Atley Hunter from Canada.. And of course the MVP legend Joe Healy was everywhere encouraging and promoting cool stuff, hopefully we'll get him back to present at JaxDUG and/or bring back Microsoft workshops to Jax area.

• I have a problem with a AE1200 Cisco/Linksys Wireless-N USB adapter having stopped working after I ran the update manager in Ubuntu 12.04

  Here is the problem, I use a Cisco/Linksys AE1200 wireless network adapter to connect my desktop to a public wifi internet connection. I use ndiswrapper to use the windows driver and it had been working fine for me untill I ran the update manager overnight a few days ago. • College Courses through distance learning

  I realize this isn't really a programming question, but didn't really know where to post this in the stackexchange and because I am a computer science major i thought id ask here. This is pretty unique to the programmer community since my degree is about 95% programming. I have 1 semester left, but i work full time. I would like to finish up in December, but to make things easier i like to take online classes whenever I can. So, my question is does anyone know of any colleges that offer distance learning courses for computer science? I have been searching around and found a few potential classes, but not sure yet. I would like to gather some classes and see what i can get approval for. Class I need: Only need one C SC 437 Geometric Algorithms C SC 445 Algorithms C SC 473 Automata Only need one C SC 452 Operating Systems C SC 453 Compilers/Systems Software While i only need of each of the above courses i still need to take two more electives. These also have to be upper 400 level classes. So i can take multiple in each category. Some other classes I can take are: CSC 447 - Green Computing CSC 425 - Computer Networking CSC 460 - Database Design CSC 466 - Computer Security I hoping to take one or two of these courses over the summer. We will further present the energy management policies at the operating system level that consider performance vs. energy saving tradeoffs. Finally we will consider large scale data centers where energy management is done at multiple layers from individual components in the system to shutting down entries subset of machines. We will also discuss energy generation and delivery and well as cooling issues in large data centers. Compilers/Systems Software Basic concepts of compilation and related systems software. Topics include lexical analysis, parsing, semantic analysis, code generation; assemblers, loaders, linkers; debuggers. Operating Systems Concepts of modern operating systems; concurrent processes; process synchronization and communication; resource allocation; kernels; deadlock; memory management; file systems. Algorithms Introduction to the design and analysis of algorithms: basic analysis techniques (asymptotics, sums, recurrences); basic design techniques (divide and conquer, dynamic programming, greedy, amortization); acquiring an algorithm repertoire (sorting, median finding, strong components, spanning trees, shortest paths, maximum flow, string matching); and handling intractability (approximation algorithms, branch and bound). Automata Introduction to models of computation (finite automata, pushdown automata, Turing machines), representations of languages (regular expressions, context-free grammars), and the basic hierarchy of languages (regular, context-free, decidable, and undecidable languages).
