• Is it a good idea to make a game for one aspect ratio and arbitrary screen resolution?

  After several very small games I have decided to make something more standalone (2D) and playable. However, I have met the problem of every game that is going to be played in more screen resolutions. Basically, after some research I see that there are several solutions. This seems to be the simplest one: Let's say I define a constant aspect ratio for the game (16:9) and the whole game will be created for a resolution 1680 x 1050. The game will be rendered in this resolution and then I will be able to scale the render to match the player's display resolution. Therefore the game might be playable on almost any resolution, while it would keep the aspect ratio. So, if the game was run on 4:3 display, the top and the bottom of the display would be filled with black color. It seems easy, but my question is - Is this a good approach for a simple game? The game will be simple, but I want to maintain high quality.

  I am a web designer/developer. Work mostly with large files 50mb+. I currently have a MyBook Live which is connected wirelessly to my MacBook Pro and Dell desktop PC running windows. Since its connected wirelessly(it doesnt have ethernet port) the files are loading slow and its hard to work staright away from my server. Now im looking for better storage/server solutions and looking at dell.com.au/servers. Im not sure which one to choose. Can you guys give me some suggestions whether I should buy the AUD599 or should I upgrade. Is there any stack guys haveing the same issue as me? t

• How could I manage Google Adsense to approve my Web App? It keeps denying it

  Google adsense keeps denying my app from having ads, because of an "insufficient content" issue. I manage a Web Application that allows the users to set Youtube Videos as Alarm Clocks. It includes an in-site Youtube search to retrieve videos from user queries and lists the users alarms. The site has a good traffic (500 users per day), is currently promoted by Google in Google Chrome Webstore, and the ajax requests are crawlable, following Google's guidelines (https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/). Although I understand there is not much content, beyond the user-generated, I really don't what else should I include in the site. Perhaps adding contact and about pages, and maybe another section would increase the navigation. Google argues I need a "fully launched and functioning site, allowing users to navigate throughout your site with a menu, sitemap, or appropiate links". They also ask for "full sentences or paragraphs" Isn't a Google Adsense solutions for Web Applications? Would all the web-apps have to include useless navigable subpages?

• How could your company's learning/development department best serve you?

  I'll preface my question with a disclaimer - I am not an engineer, I'm just someone who works with them full-time, in a learning and development capacity. Given that, one of the comments I get regularly from the engineers I'm tasked with developing is that they feel that they're having solutions (both technical and non-technical) for development "pushed" at them vs. anyone from my field consulting with them to determine what they really need. So my question is - if you could give your company a list of the top 3-5 things they could do - in a classroom, or elsewhere - to develop meaningful skills that would help you be a better engineer, a better employee, and one more likely to STAY with the company for the long haul, what would make the cut and why? Been fed up to install all those dependencies and no make -files with GUI -things so which console-based MIS would you suggest for a game-development team with graphical -repo, animation -repo, code -repo, stories -repo, etc ? P.s. I do use Git -submodules and the reason for repo -fragmentation is due to roles and size, certain repos such as graphic -repos tend to be quite large so better to keep them separate.   I want to run diskless booting with PXE. The gotchas at the end of the Diskless-Howto[1] is quite long. I am unsure how to get this done. Here are my current possible solutions: use debian live and not ubuntu use aufs [2] The How-To states "confirmed to work with Ubuntu 12.04.".   I mean, there are really useful libs that can solve problems when you are stuck and do not know how to solve this or that with your knowledge of programing language you use... For example, Boost for C++ or JQuery for JavaScript or Spring for Java... They solve problems in seconds and you do not really care how they did it (despite that they are written in the very same language you are programming in)... So I wonder am I alone use libs not being capable to write solutions for my problems from scratch or its standard practice?

• Several classes need to access the same data, where should the data be declared?

  I have a basic 2D tower defense game in C++. Each map is a separate class which inherits from GameState. The map delegates the logic and drawing code to each object in the game and sets data such as the map path. In pseudo-code the logic section might look something like this: update(): for each creep in creeps: creep.update() for each tower in towers: tower.update() for each missile in missiles: missile.update() The objects (creeps, towers and missiles) are stored in vector-of-pointers. The towers must have access to the vector-of-creeps and the vector-of-missiles to create new missiles and identify targets. The question is: where do I declare the vectors? Should they be members of the Map class, and passed as arguments to the tower.update() function? Or declared globally? Or are there other solutions I'm missing entirely?

• Partitions and cdrom are not automounted

  Provide my spec and sorry for my poor English first. MB: Gigabyte G31M-S2L (bios ver. F9) CPU: intel E5200 2G RAM HD1: WD 160G with 2 partitions (partition 1:60G, NTFS, win xp; partition 2:100G, NTFS) HD2: WD 320G with 2 partitions (partition 3:220G, NTFS; partition 4:100G, ext4, Ubuntu) Recently, I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 on my desktop PC (on partition 4). At the beginning, everything looked great including the auto-mounting of partitions 1~3 and the unity (3D). However, after I deleted and re-allocated the partitions on HD2 and re-installed Ubuntu on partition 4, the partitions 1~3 are no longer auto-mounted when I logged in the desktop (and even the inserted cdrom would not be mounted either). The configurations during these two installations are all the same as default. Are there any possible reasons or solutions for this issue?

• Good analytics tools that can track visitor actions from a particular source?

  Are there good tools that can track what actions a certain subset of visitors (i.e. from a particular source) do once they're on your site? As far as I know (which could be wrong), Google Analytics can't do this beyond telling you how long they stayed, bounce rate, and average number of pages. I'm looking for something that can tell me which links they clicked on, and if possible break it down per-visitor. Free solutions would be great, but I'm anticipating that this would require a paid solution.

Here are a few I'm proposing to myself: no absolute paths in include|require(_once)? statements no .. dirname(foo), or other means of walking up in include|require(_once)? statements put libs on the include path, not in subdirectories You can see that all of this is focusing on managing dependencies, because that is the problem I've encountered thus far.   I'm using DELL inspiron 5420 (14R 3rd generation), and tried to install ubuntu 10.10, 11.10, 12.04, 12.04.1 but each and every time it doesn't support any of my driver such as network card, wireless driver, video driver and as well as audio and touch-pad driver. audio, video and touch-pad works with their basic functionality but don't work with their full functionality. I'm a new user of ubuntu, and willing to use it permanently. In this condition I tried some solutions from the web but didn't get out from this problem.
