• How to subString a block of user generated HTML while preserving formatting?

  I'd like to create the typical preview paragraph with a [read more] link. Problem is, the content that I'd like to SubString() contains text and html, written by a user with a WYSIWYG editor. Of course, I check to make sure the string is not null or empty, then SubString() it, problem is that I could end up breaking the html tags, throwing off the rendering of the entire site. The WYSIWYG editor doesn't seem to create perfectly formatted HTML, and many times seems to use <br /> tags instead of <p></p>, etc... basically, I can't rely on well-formed tags, etc. My workaround was to just strip out all HTML and substring the leftover text. This works, but loses any of the formatting that was in the HTML. What's the best method of SubString()'ing a block of non-well-formed HTML while maintaining HTML that won't break the rendering of the site?

  I have an object called Time public class Time{ public int Hour {get;set;} public int Minute {get;set;} public static Time Parse(string timeString){ //reads the ToString()'s previous output and returns a Time object } override protected string ToString(){ //puts out something like 14:50 (as in 2:50PM) } } So what I want is for the automatic model binding on the Edit or Create action to set this Time instance up from a string (i.e. feed the Parse method with the string and return the result). The reason I am doing this is that I will have a DropDownList with selectable times. The value of each option will be the parser readable string. Can anyone provide an example BindModel method from the IModelBinder interface?

  In an Android ListActivity, I am adding a button as a footer in a ListView. How can I apply layout formatting to this button like centering it and/or width=fill_parent? I have tried a few things such as using setLayoutParams(), but have not gotten it to work - the footer always disappears when I try anything. • Missing parameter error after running MySql query

  Hello, I'm completely new to MySql and haven't used SqlDataSource with UpdateParameters before, so I'm probably missing something very obvious. When trying to update a record, the update does happen but then throws an error saying "'id' parameter is missing at the statement". So the query works and the database gets updated as it should, but an error is thrown afterwards. • How do I ignore the UTF-8 Byte Order Marker in String comparisons?

  I'm having a problem comparing strings in a Unit Test in C# 4.0 using Visual Studio 2010. This same test case works properly in Visual Studio 2008 (with C# 3.5). Here's the relevant code snippet: byte[] rawData = GetData(); string data = Encoding.UTF8.GetString(rawData); Assert.AreEqual("Constant", data, false, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture); While debugging this test, the data string appears to the naked eye to contain exactly the same string as the literal. When I called data.ToCharArray(), I noticed that the first byte of the string data is the value 65279 which is the UTF-8 Byte Order Marker. What I don't understand is why Encoding.UTF8.GetString() keeps this byte around. How do I get Encoding.UTF8.GetString() to not put the Byte Order Marker in the resulting string?

• Best way to test if a generic type is a string? (c#)

  I have a generic class that should allow any type, primitive or otherwise. The only problem with this is using default(T). When you call default on a value type or a string, it initializes it to a reasonable value (such as empty string). When you call default(T) on an object, it returns null. For various reasons we need to ensure that if it is not a primitive type, then we will have a default instance of the type, not null. Here is attempt 1: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType) { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } Problem - string is not a value type, but it does not have a parameterless constructor. So, the current solution is: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType || typeof(T).FullName == "System.String") { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } But this feels like a kludge. Is there a nicer way to handle the string case?

• Is there a way to preserve HTML Formatting in LiveDocX?

  I have a large amount of content stored in a database as XHTML. I need to be able to pull this formatted content into a simple LiveDocX template with the formatting (bold, italic, bulleted lists, etc) preserved. Is this possible? If so, can anybody post a working example or link to an article? If not, are there other applications that I could look into? The client needs to be able to export content in the .doc/.docx file format. Thanks, Peter

• C# delegates problem

  Hello I am getting the following error from my C# Windows Application: Error 1 No overload for 'CreateLabelInPanel' matches delegate 'WorksOrderStore.ProcessDbConnDetailsDelegate' H:\c\WorksOrderFactory\WorksOrderFactory\WorksOrderClient.cs 43 39 WorksOrderFactory I have 3 .cs files that essentially: Opens a windows Has an option for the users to connect to a db When that is selected, the system will go off and connect to the db, and load some data in (just test data for now) Then using a delegate, the system should do soemthing, which for testing will be to create a label. However I haven't coded this part yet. But I can't build until I get this error sorted.   Hi, I have a rather large class stored in the datastore, for example a User class with lots of fields (I'm using java, omitting all decorations below example for clarity): @PersistenceCapable class User { private String username; private String city; private String state; private String country; private String favColor; } For some user queries, I only need the favColor property, but right now I'm doing this: SELECT FROM " + User.class.getName() + " WHERE username == 'bob' which should deserialize all of the entity properties. Is it possible to do something instead like: SELECT username, favColor FROM " + User.class.getName() + " WHERE username == 'bob' and then in this case, all of the returned User instances will only spend time deserializing the username and favColor properties, and not the city/state/country properties? If so, then I suppose all the other properties will be null (in the case of objects) or 0 for int/long/float? Thank you

• How to safely operate on parameters in threads, using C++ & Pthreads?

  Hi. I'm having some trouble with a program using pthreads, where occassional crashes occur, that could be related to how the threads operate on data So I have some basic questions about how to program using threads, and memory layout: Assume that a public class function performs some operations on some strings, and returns the result as a string. The prototype of the function could be like this: std::string SomeClass::somefunc(const std::string &strOne, const std::string &strTwo) { //Error checking of strings have been omitted std::string result = strOne.substr(0,5) + strTwo.substr(0,5); return result; } Is it correct to assume that strings, being dynamic, are stored on the heap, but that a reference to the string is allocated on the stack at runtime? Stack: [Some mem addr] pointer address to where the string is on the heap Heap: [Some mem addr] memory allocated for the initial string which may grow or shrink To make the function thread safe, the function is extended with the following mutex (which is declared as private in the "SomeClass") locking: std::string SomeClass::somefunc(const std::string &strOne, const std::string &strTwo) { pthread_mutex_lock(&someclasslock); //Error checking of strings have been omitted std::string result = strOne.substr(0,5) + strTwo.substr(0,5); pthread_mutex_unlock(&someclasslock); return result; } Is this a safe way of locking down the operations being done on the strings (all three), or could a thread be stopped by the scheduler in the following cases, which I'd assume would mess up the intended logic: a. Right after the function is called, and the parameters: strOne & strTwo have been set in the two reference pointers that the function has on the stack, the scheduler takes away processing time for the thread and lets a new thread in, which overwrites the reference pointers to the function, which then again gets stopped by the scheduler, letting the first thread back in? b. Can the same occur with the "result" string: the first string builds the result, unlocks the mutex, but before returning the scheduler lets in another thread which performs all of it's work, overwriting the result etc. Or are the reference parameters / result string being pushed onto the stack while another thread is doing performing it's task? Is the safe / correct way of doing this in threads, and "returning" a result, to pass a reference to a string that will be filled with the result instead: void SomeClass::somefunc(const std::string &strOne, const std::string &strTwo, std::string result) { pthread_mutex_lock(&someclasslock); //Error checking of strings have been omitted result = strOne.substr(0,5) + strTwo.substr(0,5); pthread_mutex_unlock(&someclasslock); } The intended logic is that several objects of the "SomeClass" class creates new threads and passes objects of themselves as parameters, and then calls the function: "someFunc": int SomeClass::startNewThread() { pthread_attr_t attr; pthread_t pThreadID; if(pthread_attr_init(&attr) != 0) return -1; if(pthread_attr_setdetachstate(&attr, PTHREAD_CREATE_DETACHED) != 0) return -2; if(pthread_create(&pThreadID, &attr, proxyThreadFunc, this) != 0) return -3; if(pthread_attr_destroy(&attr) != 0) return -4; return 0; } void* proxyThreadFunc(void* someClassObjPtr) { return static_cast<SomeClass*> (someClassObjPtr)->somefunc("long string","long string"); } Sorry for the long description.
