• Why does my PowerBook display “Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!” and stop booting?

  I have an old PowerBook G4 that worked (more or less) fine with a previous installation of Ubuntu Desktop 12.04. A few days ago I decided to install Ubuntu Server instead, and got a copy of Ubuntu Server 12.10. The installation seemed to complete successfully, but now, whenever I try to boot the system, it simply halts at some point after I unlock the hard disk. There is a lot of text on the screen (which is normal for me during a boot, except now it's mostly errors and debug information), the last of which is this: [ 26.338228] Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed! Pressing control command power to force a reboot yields exactly the same results. A search for the error message turned up many temporary solutions involving kernel parameters, but none of them have worked for me. I don't think I can remove the default set of parameters (which I think is quiet splash), but I can pass additional parameters on boot. I've tried booting on AC and battery power, as well as using these combinations of kernel parameters while on battery power: acpi=enable pci=noacpi pci=assign-busse acpi=ht acpi=off nomodeset nomodeset acpi=off Why am I getting this error and how can I fix it?

• What does "Local Domain Name" on router do and how do I get it to work?

  I have a D-Link DGL-4500 router. One of the settings is "Local Domain Name," which I have set to local (see screenshot). What I expect is for me to be able to hit my computers via name, e.g. m6.local should resolve to one of my computers; but this isn't happening. I know that I can do this via hosts file, but it would be neat if I could do it via the router... plus I have devices like an iPad that don't let you edit the hosts file. Am I misunderstanding this router feature or am I doing something wrong?

  Hi, (I've posted this question on Stack Overflow first, but someone told me it belonged here.) I have a custom LDAP server, which I can customize to generate whichever object class and attributes I need. I'm trying to display people from that server in the Mac OS X address book. Names and organizations display correctly, as well as work-related phone and address. However, I've never been able to have a home address displayed in the address book. • Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

  I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. See logs below, I may be missing something, also how is it possible to log on the bootstrap vm. Could I manual deploy, if so what do I need to do.   I am the webmaster to my company's website. I was asked to make the Google Map on this page smaller, but the interactive map doesn't work well at all at 300x200. I was asked to place a screenshot there but since that seems to be a violation of Google's terms I decided to use the Static Maps API. As you can see, on the page, I have a custom pointer icon. Now... its screen is dead and I'm looking for replacement parts, but it turns out to be a kind of expensive display - AUO B140XW02 14" LED. US$ 125 was the cheapest I found here (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The official dealer sells them for US$ 175. I'm aware of How do I know if a LCD is compatible with my Laptop? and Can I replace a laptop screen with one of a different resolution? but the answers don't really help me in this case. Also Replacing an LCD screen in a laptop gives me a hint but I'm completely dumb at hardware so this is why i'm asking: Is it possible to buy an LCD or a lower grade LED screen with the same connectors? What characteristics should I look for to find out if a certain display is compatible?

  Motivation I have to manage a lot of virtual machines that I create by copying a template (VmWare image). Problem Now I have the problem that in the template the file /etc/hostname contains a given name that I want to change for each copy of the template. Facts The network interface is configured by DHCP. DNS entries exist. The system is a Ubuntu 9.10 server. Question I wonder if I can configure the template so that on startup it sets its hostname according to its DNS name. I could create an init script that parses the IP address, makes a DNS lookup and sets the hostname accordingly. But is there an easier way?

• Is there a rule of thumb for what a bing map's zoom setting should be based on how many miles you want to display?

  If a map contains pushpins/waypoints that span only a couple of miles, the map should be zoomed way in and show a lot of detail. If the pushpins/waypoints instead cover vast areas, such as hundreds or even thousands of miles, it should be zoomed way out. That's clear. My question is: is there a general guideline for mapping (no pun intended) Bing Maps zoom levels to a particular number of miles that separate the furthest apart points? e.g., is there some chart that has something like: Zoom level N shows 2 square miles Zoom level N shows 5 square miles etc.?

  I've been looking for documentation on how the Microsoft and Google bots interpret 301 redirects. It seems that google-bot stores documents on a url based index system. But I haven't been able to figure out how bing works. Should I assume that they are still working towards coping everyone else and assume they use an algorithm close to google? Is it best to just forward a page to a new location via Javascript? I think this might be a blackhat trick, but how would I tell the bots that it's not? Is 301 redirect my best option and I just have to bit the bullet because said pages are no longer in existence? What other options do I have that I might not be aware of?

• Scala factory pattern returns unusable abstract type

The problem is that the Scala compiler doesn't understand that my factory is returning a concrete class, so my object can't be used later. Can TypeTags or type parameters help? Or do I need to refactor the code some other way?   I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit), the GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 4290 onboard a ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 mainboard. The Ubuntu wiki doesn't cover 10.10 yet and I also don't know if that method would support direct rendering. I heard mentions of xephyr and xgl, what are the differences? Where should I start? I tried the mdm livedisk but that doesn't boot. I'm also willing to try a different distribution if necessary. Edit: 1 Will the HowTo: A well performing, full eye-candy, accelerated pseudo-multiseat setup on a single dualhead GPU. for Ubuntu 9.04 still work? I'm afraid it omits how to setup two input devices and sound however... Edit: 2 http://multiseatonlinux.blogspot.com/2010/06/part-1-setting-up-base.html covers 10.10 but requires pinning gdm. Is that circumvenatable? Also how does that setup have to be modified for dual-head?

  I tried to change via dragging from the Backgrounds and Emblems window, but the icon just goes back to that window rather than changing the folder background.However, I can change the task bar by this drag-n-drop. Probably it is something about changing ownership permission? if so how to change that? • How does the Keyword Order in the domain name effects SEO?

  From the Google keyword research tool, I see "chuck norris jokes" has global 246,000 searches. And again searching "jokes chuck norris" has the same search result. But as see, order of keyword in search terms has, "hello how are you" and "how are you hello" has clearly different results. Now instead of search term (assuming "chuck norris jokes"), I was wondering, if I had to register chucknorrisjokes.com and jokeschucknorris.com, would it effect the ranking on the search result? Or would it be the same? As we see here, both the domains has the same keywords, just in different order. How would that effect? I hope what I am trying to say is clear.

I know it often comes down to coding style, but which one is "better?" Should I sacrifice clarity to eliminate potential confusion?

For customers using the Client/Server Deployment of AutoVue, users that had upgraded their client Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to version 1.6.0_19 or later suddenly noticed that their 3D files were opening blank in AutoVue. This issue was due to a change in JRE version 1.6.0_19, and the AutoVue team now offers a patch to address the issue in AutoVue version 20.0.0. The patch number is 10268316, is available through the My Oracle Support portal, and is described further in KM Note 1104821.1. We'll mention it again in our next Support newsletter, and the AutoVue team will target to roll the same fix into the next available release of the product.

• Can Safari 5.1 for Mac OS display favicons for bookmarks in the Bookmarks Bar?

  When bookmarking a web site, most contemporary browser will display the site's favicon next to the bookmark, both in the bookmark view and the bookmark toolbar. This is a useful feature. In the bookmark toolbar you can edit the name of the bookmark to be blank, effectively leaving the favicon there as an easily identifiable "button" from which to launch the bookmark. This allows you to make more effective user of the space in the bookmark toolbar. I use this approach effectively in Firefox, Chrome, and IE. For example, here is a portion of my Bookmarks Toolbar from Firefox: However, in Safari, no favicon is ever displayed for bookmarks. In the full bookmark view only a generic globe icon is displayed. In the Bookmark Bar in Safari, no icon at all is displayed. Which means the habit of removing the bookmark name & leaving the favicon is useless. Here's what the same configuration (synced between browsers via Xmarks) looks like in Safari. That blank space is where the favicons should be. The boomark is there -- if you hover over it, the blank space changes color to indicate the presence of a bookmark and a tool tip will with the URL will pop up after about two seconds. However, it's really quite unusable. So. The question: is there an extension, plug-in, or modification of some sort that will enable the display of favicons for bookmarks in Safari (OS X Lion 10.7.3 , Safari version 5.1.3)?

Here's some background on how my domain name and site is currently configured: My domain name provider has the following settings: host name @ is an A NAME record and points to IP address x.x.x.x host name www is an A NAME record and points to IP address x.x.x.x sub-domain host name new.example.com is an A NAME record and points to IP address x.x.x.x My hosting provider has the following settings: host record @ is an A NAME record and points to IP address x.x.x.x, folder home/public_html/old host record www is a C NAME record and points to example.com sub-domain host record new.example.com points to home/public_html/new I want to: point the domain (example.com AND www.example.com) to the content hosted under folder home/public_html/new, which is currently the content directory for new.example.com retire the content hosted under folder home/public_html/old retire the sub-domain host record new.example.com I believe the easiest method of doing this, is: removing the sub-domain host record new.example.com; and changing the following line in the .htaccess file in home/public_html from # Change 'subdirectory' to be the directory you will use for your main domain. RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/old/ to # Change 'subdirectory' to be the directory you will use for your main domain. RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/new/ But I don't understand how this will impact my SERP - ideally, I'd like it to remain the same. Research on this topic resulted in the following Google page, which was no help, and this related StackExchange question, which suggests that this should not affect my SERP (at least, not permanently). But I wanted to make certain with a more specific example, and hopefully contribute to the community at the same time. I'd appreciate any feedback on this. Is there a better/recommended method to migrate sites this way? Is there an SEO impact?

• A Cautionary Tale About Multi-Source JNDI Configuration

  Here's a bit of fun with WebLogic JDBC configurations.  I ran into this issue after reading that p13nDataSource and cgDataSource-NonXA should not be configured as multi-source. There were some issues changing them to use the basic JDBC connection string and when rolling back to the bad configuration the server went "Boom".  Since one purpose behind this blog is to share lessons learned, I just had to post this. If you write your descriptors manually (as opposed to generating them using the WLS console) and put a comma-separated list of JNDI addresses like this: <jdbc-data-source-params> <jndi-name>weblogic.jdbc.jts.commercePool,contentDataSource, contentVersioningDataSource,portalFrameworkPool</jndi-name> <algorithm-type>Load-Balancing</algorithm-type> <data-source-list>portalDataSource-rac0,portalDataSource-rac1</data-source-list> <failover-request-if-busy>false</failover-request-if-busy> </jdbc-data-source-params> so long as the first address resolves, it will still work. Sort of.  If you call this connection to do an update, only one node of the RAC instance is updated. Other wonderful side-effects include the server refusing to start sometimes. The proper way to list the JNDI sources is one per node, like this: <jdbc-data-source-params> <jndi-name>weblogic.jdbc.jts.commercePool</jndi-name> <jndi-name>contentDataSource</jndi-name> <jndi-name>contentVersioningDataSource</jndi-name> <jndi-name>portalFrameworkPool</jndi-name> <algorithm-type>Load-Balancing</algorithm-type> <data-source-list>portalDataSource-rac0, portalDataSource-rac1, portalDataSource-rac2 </data-source-list> <failover-request-if-busy>false</failover-request-if-busy> </jdbc-data-source-params>(Props to Sandeep Seshan for locating the root cause)

The idea is that you provide some input (a word(s)) and it comes up with synonyms, rhyming words, etc. Ideally, I'd want to have some confidence that they aren't just registering all the domains I come up with.
