• Which are the RDBMS that minimize the server roundtrips? Which RDBMS are better (in this area) than

  When the latency is high ("when pinging the server takes time") the server roundtrips make the difference. Now I don't want to focus on the roundtrips created in programming, but the roundtrips that occur "under the hood" in the DB engine, so the roundtrips that are 100% dependant on how the RDBMS is written itself. I have been told that FireBird has more roundtrips than MySQL. But this is the only information I know. I am currently supporting MS SQL but I'd like to change RDBMS (because I use Express Editions and in my scenario they are quite limiting from the performance point of view), so to make a wise choice I would like to include also this point into "my RDBMS comparison feature matrix" to understand which is the best RDBMS to choose as an alternative to MS SQL. So the bold sentence above would make me prefer MySQL to Firebird (for the roundtrips concept, not in general), but can anyone add informations? And MS SQL where is it located? Is someone able to "rank" the roundtrip performance of the main RDBMS, or at least: MS SQL, MySql, Postegresql, Firebird (I am not interested in Oracle since it is not free, and if I have to change I would change to a free RDBMS). Anyway MySql (as mentioned several times on stackoverflow) has a not clear future and a not 100% free license. So my final choice will probably dall on PostgreSQL or Firebird. Additional info: somehow you can answer my question by making a simple list like: MSSQL:3; MySQL:1; Firebird:2; Postgresql:2 (where 1 is good, 2 average, 3 bad). Of course if you can post some links where the roundtrips per RDBMSs are compared it would be great

• ASP.NET MVC - Alternative to Role Provider?

  Hey there, I'm trying to avoid the use of the Role Provider and Membership Provider since its way too clumsy in my opinion, and therefore I'm trying to making my own "version" which is less clumsy and more manageable/flexible. Now is my question.. is there an alternative to the Role Provider which is decent? (I know that I can do custom Role provier, membership provider etc.) By more manageable/flexible I mean that I'm limited to use the Roles static class and not implement directly into my service layer which interact with the database context, instead I'm bound to use the Roles static class which has its own database context etc, also the table names is awful..   I try to use AlarmManager to setup an alarm that happens after some seconds from now. But when the code runs what happens is the alarm not always happens exactly at 12:00PM, sometimes it will be delayed by 1 or 2 minutes, or even 5 minutes!   I have an NSArrayController which is bound to a class in my Managed Object Context. During runtime the NSArrayController can have a number of different filter predicates applied. At certain intervals, I want to iterate through my NSArrayController's contents regardless of the filter predicate applied to it. To do this, I set the filterPredicate to nil and then reinstate it after having iterated through my array. This seems to work, but I'm wondering if it's best practice? Should I instead be polling my Managed Object Context manually?   I'd like to pre-store a bunch of function calls in a data structure and later evaluate/execute them from within another function. This works as planned for functions defined at namespace level with defn (even though the function definition comes after my creation of the data structure) but will not work with functions defined by let [name (fn or letfn inside the function.   I'm trying to get a property (ImpersonatePersonId) from a page in global.asax but get a HttpException saying 'Request is not available in this context'. I've been searching for some documentation on where in the pipeline the request is accessible, but as far as I can see all Microsoft can produce of documentation is one-liners like "PostRequestHandlerExecute: Occurs when the ASP.NET event handler finishes execution." which really doesn't give me much... I've tried placing the call in both Pre and PostRequestHandlerExceute but with the same result. I wonder if anyone with experience in this would be so kind as to tell me where the Request object is available. My code from global asax is below.   Suppose there is an element in XML data: <abc:xyz:name attr="value"/> I'm trying to read it with XmlReader. The problem is that I get XmlException that says The ‘:’ character, hexadecimal value 0x3A, cannot be included in a name I have already declared "abc" namespace. I have also tried adding "abc:xyz" and "xyz" namespaces. But this doesn't help at all. I could replace some text before parsing but there may be some more elegant solution. So what should I do?   I have deployed one web project into Azure emulator. And I get this error saying that Could not load file or assembly Base. The thing is that this web project, got dependencies to another project in the same solution. I have added that dependency into the reference list of my web project. And if I run this web application without using the azure emulator it will run fine. But I will get error when I try to run it on the azure emulator. At first glance I thought that I maybe need to add the other project as role also. But it couldn't be that. Anyone know what the problem might be? I hope I got enough data for you to look into.   How do you modify a propertygrid at runtime in every way? I want to be able to add and remove properties and add "dynamic types", what I mean with that is a type that result in a runtime generated dropdown in the propertygrid using a TypeConverter. I have actually been able to do both those things (add/remove properties and add dynamic type) but only separately not at the same time. • Https in java ends up with strange results

  I'm trying to illustrate to students how https is used in java. But i have the feeling my example is not really the best out there... The code works well on my windows 7: I start the server, go to https://localhost:8080/somefile.txt and i get asked to trust the certificate, and all goes well. When I try over http (before or after accepting the certificate) I just get a blank page, which is ok for me. BUT when I try the exact same thing on my windows XP: Same thing, all goes well. But then (after accepting the certificate first), I'm also able to get all the the files through http! (if I first try http before https followed by accepting the certificate, I get no answer..) I tried refreshing, hard refreshing a million times but this should not be working, right? Is there something wrong in my code?   Now I specify a directory name for "appBase" attribute on "{TomcatHome}/config/server.xml". <host appBase="d:/aaa"> <Context docBase="d:/aaa/bbb"> </Context> </host> When I navigate URL to "http://localhost:8080", TOMCAT think "d:/aaa/ROOT" as application directory. I want to know how can I modify this mechanism to make TOMCAT auto search my specified directory. For example: When I input "http://localhost:8080", TOMCAT would search "d:/aaa/{SpecifiedDirectoryName}/"

• Linq to Sql: Update Entity throug a new Object

  Hey Guys I'd like to update an entity via linq, but since I edit the entity in a view after serializing it, I don't have direct access to the entity inside the data context. I could do it like this: entity.property1 = obj.property1; entity.property2 = obj.property2; ... thats not cool... not cool at all. Next thing I tried is to do it via .attach() like so: context.Table.attach(entity, obj); doesn't work either. So is there another option short of reflection?

• Annotation based view mapping

  I am trying to get my head around annotation based mappings and I am having some trouble mapping requests directly to jsp. Do all request have to go through a controller? Is it possible to make it just go to a jsp without declaring a RequestMapping for GET? I am using a InternalResourceViewResolver.
