  • Should I implement BackBone.js into my ASP.NET WebForms applications?

    Background I'm trying to improve my group's current web app development pattern. Our current pattern is something we came up with while trying to rich web apps on top of ASP.NET WebForms (none of us knew ASP.NET MVC). This is the current pattern: ! Our application is using the WinForms Framework. Our ASPX pages are essentially just HTML, we use almost no WebControls. We use JavaScript/jQuery to perform all of our UI events and AJAX calls. For a single ASPX page, we have a single .js file. All of our AJAX calls are POSTs (not RESTful at all) Our AJAX calls contact WebMethods which we have defined in a series of ASMX files. One ASMX file per business object. Why Change? I want to revise our pattern a bit for a couple of reasons: We're starting to find that our JavaScript files are getting a bit unwieldy. We're using a hodgepodge of methods for keeping our local data and DOM updates in sync. We seem to spend too much time writing code to keep things in sync, and it can get tricky to debug. I've been reading Developing Backbone.js Applications and I like a lot of what Backbone has to offer in terms of code organization and separation of concerns. However, I've gotten to the chapter on RESTful app, I started to feel some hesitation about using Backbone. The Problem The problem is our WebMethods do not really fit into the RESTful pattern, which seems to be the way Backbone wants to consume them. For now, I'd only like to address our issue of disorganized client side code. I'd like to avoid major rewrites to our WebMethods. My Questions Is it possible to use Backbone (or a similar library) to clean up our client code, while not majorly impacting our data access WebMethods? Or would trying to use Backbone in this manner be a bastardization of it's intended use? Anyone have any suggestions for improving our pattern in the area of code organization and spending less time writing DOM and data sync code?

  • Online Multiplayer Game Architecture [on hold]

    I am just starting to research online multiplayer game development and I have a high-level architectural question regarding how online multiple games function. I have server-side and client-side programming experience, and I understand how AJAX-esque transfer protocol operates. What I don't understand yet is how online multiple fits into all of that. For example, an online Tetris multiplayer game. Would both players have the entire Tetris game built out on their client-side and then get pushed "moves" from the other player via some AJAX-esque mechanism, in which case each client would have to be constantly listening via JavaScript for inbound "moves" and update the client appropriately? Or would each client build out the aesthetics and run a virtual server per game to which each client connects and thus pull and push commands in real-time via something like web sockets? I apologize if this question is too high-level and general, but I couldn't find anything online that offered this high-level of a perspective on the topic.

In one of these blogs dealing with jQuery Templates supported tags, I’ve got a question how to create alternating row background. When rendering the template, there is no direct access to the item index. One way is if there is an incremental index in the JSON string, we can use it to solve this. All these control have client-side Events which are under some ClientScript nameSpace of particular control, Which specify ClientInstanceName, methods and properties accessible at client side. For example Button1 is ClientInstanceName and Button1.Text is a property, with methods like these: Button1.SetValue(); Button1.GetValue(); In ASP.Net Controls, buttons have the ClientClick event that fires before the Server Side Click event. I have inspected and goggled to extend client side functionality in asp.net controls. For example: create a ClientInstanceName property for controls or CheckedChanged event for CheckBox / RadioButton control.   • Extending Currying: Partial Functions in Javascript

    Last week I posted about function currying in javascript.  This week I am taking it a step further by adding the ability to call partial functions. Suppose we have a graphing application that will pull data via Ajax and perform some calculation to update a graph.  Using a method with the signature ‘updateGraph(id,value)’. To do this, we have do something like this: 1: for(var i=0;i<objects.length;i++) { 2: Ajax.request('/some/data',{id:objects[i].id},function(json) { 3: updateGraph(json.id, json.value); 4: } 5: } This works fine.  But, using this method we need to return the id in the json response from the server.  This works fine, but is not that elegant and increase network traffic. Using partial function currying we can bind the id parameter and add the second parameter later (when returning from the asynchronous call).  To do this, we will need the updated curry method.  I have added support for sending additional parameters at runtime for curried methods. 1: Function.prototype.curry = function(scope) { 2: scope = scope || window 3: var args = []; 4: for (var i=1, len = arguments.length; i < len; ++i) { 5: args.push(arguments[i]); 6: } 7: var m = this; 8: return function() { 9: for (var i=0, len = arguments.length; i < len; ++i) { 10: args.push(arguments[i]); 11: } 12: return m.apply(scope, args); 13: }; 14: } To partially curry this method we will call the curry method with the id parameter, then the request will callback on it with just the value.  Any additional parameters are appended to the method call. 1: for(var i=0;i<objects.length;i++) { 2: var id=objects[i].id; 3: Ajax.request('/some/data',{id: id}, updateGraph.curry(id)); 4: } As you can see, partial currying gives is a very useful tool and this simple method should be a part of every developer’s toolbox.

I have a login security module now installed on my Drupal 6 website and it bans on IP after x amount of attempts. It's been going on for ever and I have banned about 1000 IP addresses.   • Is it convenient to use a XML/JSON generated based system? [closed]

    One of my clients insists that we missed a requisite for the project(a little social network, using PHP + MySql), is that all queries are made from XML / JSON static files (using AJAX) and not directly from the database. Edit: The main reason, stated by client, is a way to economize bandwith. Even the file loading, has to be using AJAX, to avoid server side processing. We will still use a database to store and insert data. These XML / JSON files will be (re) generated whenever any data is changed by CMS or users. As the project was developed without this "technique", we'll have a lot of work ahead, so I would like to avoid that. I'm asking if it's convenient to use a XML generated based system, because I think a database is already "optimized" and secure to deal with a lot of data traffic. Other issue I'm afraid of, is a chance of conflict when a user is trying to read a XML/JSON which is being just generated.

For example there might be a different number of rows or there may be the need for rowspan and colspan. When the user chooses to see this table an ajax call is made to the server where the structure of the table is decided from the database. Then I have to create the html code for the table structure which will be inserted in the DOM via JavaScript. The following problem comes to my mind: Where should I build the HTML code which will be inserted in the DOM? On the server side or should I send some parameters in the ajax call method and process the structure there? Therefore the main question involves good practice when it comes to decide between Server side processing or client side processing. Thank you!
