• Internet Explorer generates extra br

  I have an issue where Internet Explorer is generating an additional br element that is not in my source. The additional br effects the page's layout and is visible when using the developer tool. I've tried removing all hard returns between the surrounding elements but the additional br persists. Firefox and Chrome do not have this issue. Ideas on what I can do to fix the issue? • Can SqlAnywhere's UltraLiteJ DB tables be viewed in the Database Explorer of the Eclipse IDE

  Hi, I am developing a Blackberry app which should be able to access a DB. Here is my development environment and the tools I am using: Eclipse (Galileo) IDE with the Blackberry plugin installed. Blackberry OS 5.0 SQLAnywhere's DB 11 with UltraLiteJ (I am targeting Blackberrys running OS 4.1 and above) I have successfully executed a sample project for building a Blackberry application that uses the UltraLiteJ DB, following the tutorial in the UltraLiteJ documentation*. The tutorial creates, populates and retrieves data from the DB using java code. Now, I want to be able to access the tables and view data in them from the Eclipse IDE. Something similar to the FireFox plugin for SqlLite or say the Enterprise Manager for Sql Server 2005 which is a DB Explorer providing access to the StoredProcedures, Views, DB Diagrams etc. for a Database. • Nginx is sending proxy saved conent in gzip format

• Adding to the browser user agent string?

  I have a plug-in that handles its own url schema (something like mystuf:// ). If a user clicks on such a link when the plug-in isn't installed (s)he gets an ugly error. So I extended my installer to write into the Registry (for Internet Explorer) and the user.js (for Firefox) to ADD a custom string to the user agent string. These additions survive a browser upgrade nicely (Microsoft uses this technique to indicate the presence of the dotNet Framework). Now I need to extend this to Apple Safari and Google Chrome on all supported platforms. To be clear: I'm not looking how to REPLACE the user agent string, but how to amend it with additional information. Any hint?

• Respecting EXIF orientation when displaying iPhone photos on the web

  I am developing an iPhone camera app that uploads an image to Amazon S3 and that image is displayed on a website. When the iPhone takes a picture, it always saves the photo in an upright orientation, while the orientation used to correctly view the photo is saved in the image's EXIF data. So if I take a photo with the iPhone and open it in FireFox without processing the EXIF data, the image could be sideways or upside down. My problem is that I don't know how to display the photo in it's correct orientation on the website. My current solution is to rotate the photo in the iPhone app, but I'd rather not do that. Is there anyway to respect the EXIF data when displaying on the web without pre-processing the image?

• Access event.target in IE8 unobstrusive Javascript

Any help will be appreciated.

• Bash commands not executed when through cron job - PHP

  Hi there! I have a cron job running a PHP script every five minutes; the PHP script executes two bash commands at the end of the script. I know the script is running due to a log file it appends to. When I run the PHP script manually via the Ubuntu Gnome Terminal both bash commands execute flawlessly; however when the PHP script is triggered via cron, the two bash commands are not ran. • How to get z-index to play nice with the jQuery plugin Cycle

  Take a look at the bottom right example on the jQuery Cycle Advanced Demos page. Notice how when it loops the gallery, the next image goes beneath the last, as opposed to others where the next image always covers the previous one? Well, at least in Firefox 3.6.3. I'm developing a custom animation with jQuery cycle that has the same problem. When it loops, the next image goes under instead of over. This is my config object I pass to cycle(). { fx: 'custom', timeout: 5000, easing: 'easeInOutQuad', pause: 1, cssFirst: { zIndex: 0 }, cssBefore: { display: 'block', top: -500, opacity: 1, zIndex: 1 }, animIn: { top: 0, opacity: 1 }, animOut: { opacity: .2 }, cssAfter: { display: 'none', opacity: .2, zIndex: 0 }, delay: -1000 } Basically the animation is the same as the cover fx, except the previous image should fade away as the next one comes down on top. • How to assume/steal another process's windows as my own?

  I'd like to show another app's windows under my app's taskbar button. It's a background app that reports another process's windows as my app's own. Is there any universal way to do this, e.g. each "new" window, alert glow, progressmeter, and other taskbar features, show under my own app's button? For example, Winfox runs under its own process and steals Firefox's windows. It also adds features, but that's irrelevant -- I just want to support another app's existing taskbar features under my own app's button -- multiple windows, progressmeter, alert flashing, error flashing, mini-icons, etc. Is there a near-universal way to steal an app, or is it largely app-specific? • start .net application from start menu search

  bla.exe (application alias) points to a .net application called wpfapp1.exe. When i add a key&value to eg. this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\bla.exe and then start application using Run - bla.exe it starts however when i start application using windows search i get an "windows cannot find wpfapp1.exe. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I have successfully identified problem: this error only occurs to .net applications while native one start normally (eg. firefox.exe). So is there any .net config that i've missed during development?

  Hello everybody In my App I'm trying to get PSMTabBarControl working, but all I do - nothing... I have copied the framework File in my Frameworks folder of my App, then included it. In my InterfaceBuilder (1.3.2) I was able to drag and drop the PSMTabBarControl to my Window and link it with the NSTabView (PSM - tabView - NSTabView && NSTabView - delegate - PSM), but after i tried a Demo (apple+r) I cant see the Tabs... Tried all I can - but dont know why.. Am I doing sth. wrong? Which other Framework or Source I can use to create Tabs like Firefox oder Safari? Thank you!

• Page zoom slows down page rendering

  I'm building a map viewer much like Google maps and i've run into an interesting performance problem when a page is zoomed (i.e ctrl + OR ctrl -). It seems to affect all major browsers but Firefox has the worst problems as far as I can tell. The problem is that when the page is zoomed panning by dragging the mouse seems really sluggish. This can even be seen on Google maps. Pan the map left and right and note how smooth it is. Now press ctrl+ (3 or 4 times). Now pan the map left and right in the same way. Notice the difference? Does anyone know how I can minimize this problem?

• How do you handle very old browsers on your site?

  Hi. We have a non-profit web site that got about 5 million hits in May. Of those, about 5,700 were from IE 5.x or lower; about 4,000 were from folks with Netscape 4.x or lower. We know that the current site's layout works for newer browsers and we're testing it on IE6 as well (along with Chrome, Opera, Safari, and Firefox). How do you handle the folks with the older browsers? Because of jQuery libraries and such, the pages might not function correctly on those old browsers. Is there an easy way to show a text-only version on browsers that can't handle the CSS and jQuery goodies? How do large sites handle this sort of thing? I've used the @embed to hide the stylesheet from Netscape 4.x, but not sure beyond that.

  I have been struggling with a z-index problem in IE6 for quite some time now. I require part of the 'header' portion in my website to open up (using jQuery), and cover a portion of the 'content' section which comes after it. The thing works like a charm on all the browsers I've tested it on (Firefox, Chrome, Opera), but IE6 instead pushes down the content section, which is not what I want. The website itself is here I have done extensive research both here on SO and thro Google but all the workarounds I've found don't work for my case. Please help.

• Object drag delay issue

  I have this code that drags stuff around perfectly in IE - however in firefox the onmousedown-drag of the object does not immediately drag but shows the no-entry cursor and then after onmouseup the object drags around freely. The object does stop draging on the next onmouseup. The object should only drag in the onmousdown state, while the onmousup call should cancel the drag by making j_OK=0.   I'm trying to make a web based media player using the HTML5 audio element implemented in Firefox 3.5 and Chrome. Reading Mozillas documentation, omitting the autobuffer attribute should result in the audio src not being requested: if specified, the audio will automatically begin being downloaded, even if not set to automatically play. This continues until the media cache is full, or the entire audio file has been downloaded, whichever comes first However, on the server side I notice the files are being requested anyway. • IIS7 - Specifying content-length header in ASP causes "connection reset" error

  I'm migrating a series of websites from an existing IIS5 server to a brand new IIS7 web server. One of the pages pulls a data file from a blob in the database and serves it to the end user: Response.ContentType = rs("contentType") Response.AddHeader "Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename=" & Trim(rs("docName"))&rs("suffix")' let the browser know the file name Response.AddHeader "Content-Length", cstr(rs("docsize"))' let the browser know the file size Testing this in the new IIS7 install, I get a "Connection Reset" error in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. The document is served up correctly if the Content-Length header is removed (but then the user won't get a useful progress bar). Any ideas on how to correct this; whether it be a server configuration option or via code? Thanks.

• Why does my jQuery animation require an extra click in IE8 to finish?

  I am pretty new to jQuery in general, however the following code works perfectly in Chrome and Firefox, but not in IE8. In IE8, I have to click anywhere on the page to start the animation after selecting a radio button. • Safari ignores input type="file" on server post

  I have a real problem with a classic ASP page. The page allows the user to upload a document and save it to the database. The intial page posts to another asp page which saves down to the db. This works on IE and Firefox. However on Safari it fails. I've debugged the problem and it boils down to the fact that of all the controls that the server page has access to, only 1 control is missing. This happens to be this: <input type="file" size="40" id="myfile" name="myfile" /> So I'm wondering why safari would decide to not give me access to this control (using asp's Request("") ) and why it works in FF and IE. I have some debug code which writes out all controls and it doesn't see this control. p.s. I hate Web development

• Jquery selectors by CSS class in IE is really slow--workarounds?

  I have a web app where I have several elements with class="classA". I want to select and apply a function to all of them. I am doing the obvious thing, which is $(".classA").each(function () { ... }). This works just fine in Chrome/Safari/Firefox but is really slow in IE. It turns out IE has serious performance issues when selecting things by CSS class in jQuery. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on good ways to deal with this. I can't use ID selectors because there can be multiple DOM elements I want to select.

• Find the xmlHttpRequest resource in aspx page

  I'm trying to find an xmlHttpRequest or similar resource that I can query directly to obtain an xml file for my own purposes. At this site it is possible to browse a Google Map mashup with markers. Unfortunately it is only possible to view all markers at a small view range, whereas I simply want to obtain all the information at once for the entire state. Using the firebug console in firefox I can enter the following javascript line to obtain the xml that I desire: document.getElementById("stationXML").value I tracked this document element down to an <input> tag, but I can't figure out how that input is set. • Mac dashboard widgets not loading external images

  I set out to make a quick Mac OS X dashboard widget. I read the documentation and was pleased to find out they use simple HTML, JS, and CSS. I created my widget and it works when I open the .html file in Firefox, but it does not work when I install the widget to the dashboard. The widget is simple: it displays the most recent image from a weather web cam stream. The image URLs look like this: http://webcam.com/stream.jpg?1274213999617. The timestamp is appended to the URL and the server automatically responds with the latest image for that time. I did not write the server script. The widget appears to be loading correctly, but the web cam image will not load. Notice the blue question mark in the upper left. The image should appear over the square background image. Is there any special procedure for loading external images into a widget?

• GWT application throws an exception when run on Google Chrome with compiler output style set to 'OBF

  I'd like to know if you guys have faced the same problem I'm facing, and how you are dealing with it. Sometimes, a small and harmless change in a Java class ensues strange errors at runtime. These errors only happen if BOTH conditions below are true: 2) the application is run on Google Chrome, and 1) the GWT JavaScript compiler output style is set to 'OBF'. So, running the application on Firefox or IE always works. Running with the output style set to 'pretty' or 'detailed' always works, even on Google Chrome. Here's an example of error message that I got: "((TypeError): Property 'top' of object [object DOMWindow] is not a function stack" And here's what I have: - GWT 1.5.3 - GXT 1.2.4 - Google Chrome 4 and 5 - Windows XP In order to get rid of this Heisenbug, I have to either deploy my application without obfuscation or endure a time-consuming trial-and-error process in which I re-implement the change in slightly different ways and re-run the application, until the GWT compiler is happy with my code. Would you have a better idea on how to avoid this?

• StackOverflow Site Layout Problem in Chrome

  I was cleaning up one of my questions here and noticed that Stack Overflow's comments were overflowing into the right column in Chrome. The question is, what's the difference in CSS handling between Chrome and Firefox. I don't have access to Safari, Opera, et al. Can someone tell me in which browsers the error manifests? Is it just me? Here's the layout error: (my apologies to Tim Down for covering up his name with my comment bubble) Since I have no natural skill for good layouts and the whole process makes me sad, I wonder if someone can diagnose the error on StackOverflow and make a recommendation on how to avoid it. Is this a consequence of embedding a div inside a td? Plus I admit it. It's fun to point out an error on one of the greatest sites ever.
